+1 Star for ht opening TRiP and the pizza delivery guy!! haha

-1 Star for the 'secret' being kept for so long, unbelievable that would have happened

-1 Star for the Ending... although it was kinda funny it just didn't make much sense

I donno I didn't feel the absolute hate for this one like a lot of other reviewers did. It wasn't great but it was watchable.

Disappointing

Not sure how this has got 10/10 and 8/10. There is nothing scary nor jumpy about this, and the Killers identity is very evident. The Plot is weak as is the dialogue. One reviewer claimed is was a Supernatural Slasher film - there is absolutely nothing supernatural in this. Just a run-of-the-mill slasher film with nothing new .... my true rating would be 3.5 as i am feeling generous

My Review Of "The 6th Friend"
ASouthernHorrorFan18 February 2019
The story has the potential to expose and, to some degree, exploit very poignant and timely subject matter echoing from the #metoo movement. A group of women forced into a horrible situation at the hands of a really bad dude, lives changed at a fundamental level, then reuniting once more only to have a new nightmare unfold. The concept just begs to perform. Unfortunately none of the material is truly developed enough to really bring life to this cultural battle cry.

The cast do their best to breathe life into the characters, but it soon becomes clear that they don't get it- not completely anyway. The social interactions of these friends feels made-up. The dialog isn't smooth enough to convince me that they experienced the original nightmare and maintained a bond strong enough to reunite. I mean there are moments of strong dialog and gritty story telling, but not consistent enough to maintain cohesion.

The horror elements and actual thriller edge was a bit to dull to sell me on the "new nightmare" situation that the group deals with in "The 6th Friend". Most of the scenes meant to provide chills and thrills seem placed as overworked tableaus. They looked good but in a film where things are already falling apart, they just aren't enough to save it. Overall I didn't enjoy this one, I wanted to, thought it was gonna be good, but it just wasn't.

Dull and uninspired
Momomo-168 May 2019
I enjoy slow burn horror, but this wasn't that. The 6th Friend is a by-the-books paint by number cardboard cutout of a horror movie, and that seems almost intentional. If you have ever seen a horror movie, then you have seen this one. And you can rest assured that what you have already seen was better. It takes dedication and genuine effort to stay awake for the duration of this movie, and sleep is much more entertaining.

Unbelievable
tm_838 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film is over dramatic with the "How do you survive a frying pan to the head and hanging by the neck from a tree"? To top the hanging off, once the girl gets saved from the hanging she runs around with the noose around her neck. Predictable and "know it's going to happen" scenes. Six girls in one house being hunted down by a dead man (?). 🤔 What more needs to be said?

Definitely an F-Grade film.
lucius-drake11 September 2019
This is not the worst film I have ever seen. I would consider it to be a strong contender for the worst film I've seen this decade.

The writing is bad, the acting is worse, and the camera-work is nauseatingly wobbly. It might be intended to feel organic, like we're watching through someone's eyes, but if that's the case the 'camera/person' is very short and dangerously drunk.

Absolutely every one of the main cast feels wooden and unconvincing. They deliver lines in ways that would make a high school drama coach despair. Seriously. I have seen school plays with better acting.

The lighting and sound are clear and the director of photography has framed a lot of the shots normally. The editing is mediocre, but serviceable. The plot is a mash-up of several horror tropes, which is fine, but I cannot tell if the dialogue or overall direction is the worst thing about this.

Follows a tired and predictable formula
mrgoth-23 January 2020
Really poor character development, tired script, mediocre acting and oh so predictable. We are to believe these characters are capable of overcoming an attacker and then completely incompetent later. Just very bad.

A Perfect Example of Why You Should Learn to Make Movies Before You Make One
muzic-4283025 January 2019
I'm not really a big fan of Jamie Bernadette to begin with. She gives this impression of arrogance and celebrity status, always in a hurry to use others as stepping stones to get ahead. This movie could have been shot in the backwoods of Kentucky, stamped with a production logo, and submitted for VOD service. Theres really nothing special about this low budget flick. Its a boring hack and slash mediocre movie about a bunch of girls in the woods running away from a killer. The film makers have obviously never received any training or attended film school. Just another actor shot project to try and help get them noticed.

Surprisingly fun
kyleallencole926 January 2019
I rented this tonight off if Amazon, not knowing much about it. This one was fun and well filmed. In my opinion, this pleasantly made slasher film had very little faults. I liked the mystery behind it as well, it did a great job at keeping the reveal of the film a secret. Mostly the mystery surrounding the killer's identity or if it was something supernatural. Great job to all involved!!

Pleasant authenticity

Warning: Spoilers
Full disclamer. I was hit by lightning 4 days ago, I am extremely uncritical of anything. .

The actors were very natural, and their interactions were authentic Thougt they were on moxy, not lsd.I've seen far worse portails of tripping in far better movies..

Not scary in the least. Leave that to The Shining, The Haunting of Hell House etc.

But if you have nothing better to do, it is a pleasant and gentle time spent.

P.S. If you smell ozone RUN

Female perspective slasher
BandSAboutMovies13 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Directed by producer and star Jamie Bernadette, who co-wrote the film with Letia Clouston, this supernatural slasher film is the story of six college best friends celebrating their own graduation party only to see it go to hell - literally - when an uninvited guest arrives. Five years later, the girls get together again, obviously having learned nothing, and endure an even more horrifying night.

Bernadette also appears in I Spit on Your Grave: Déjà Vu, the fifth sequel to the original and the only one in continuity (it's also the return of director Meir Zarchi and actress Camille Keaton). This movie is a personal project that she's lived with for some time.

It all starts with a party that gets way out of hand as Tyler shows up with acid and a skull mask. A mysterious event happens, there's plenty of blood and police questions, and when they get back together five years later, everyone mentions seeing Tyler, but has no idea how he's still alive.

Dominique Swain from the remake of Lolita and Face/Off is in this, adding some star power playing, well, a star actress. Gradually, all hell breaks loose and the killer reveals himself in the woods, strangling and stabbing and murdering the kills one by one. It takes awhile to get there and it's pretty talky, but once the killing starts, it's good and bloody with plenty of twists and turns.

No one was ready to make a movie yet.
Patient4443 June 2019
Sorry to say so, but boy The 6th Friend was a swing and a miss. How could this script possibly get green lighted is beyond me, because it has close to nothing to show for. The ending was easy to anticipate, the deaths quite weak, a lot of focus on dialogue, somewhat of a Tarantino style, but none of the substance.

It just wasn't enough to make a movie, out of a thin idea, poor execution, none of the key ingredients here, just some harsh mix of uncooked ingredients. Not good enough even for a side dish.

All in all The 6th Friend deserves more to be ignored than watched, just put your eye on something else and most likely you'll do better.

Cheers!

Why is there no zero rating?
jhr20124 March 2021
Because this movie deserves one. What a mess. A bunch of stupid women have a reunion and are afraid of their shadows. I was never really sure what they were afraid of. There are flashbacks but of what, I'm not sure. Avoid this one.

Ok slasher/thriller
RandomTard12 October 2021
There wasn't anything really wrong with the movie. It's perfectly watchable but it's not exactly good. It's just a little bland.

Some people here are calling it a supernatural whatever but that's not correct.

Failed wannabe horror-attempt
johannes2000-18 January 2023
It seems like the easiest way to make a horror movie: put a group of friends in an isolated cabin in the woods and launch on them some kind of killing spree of whatever origin. Not very original, but it may turn out okay when it's at least done with some quality acting, decent CGI and maybe a nice twist to the worn-out premise. Well, here it failed on every account, or you should consider a bunch of severely traumatized women (by an extremely farfetched reason: they once collectively killed, in a drugs-induced daze, a rapist) a remotely original starting-point. They gather in the cabin to come to terms with their past, but then there appears the dead rapist to haunt them. Or is it really him??

No-one of the girls is in any way sympathetic or interesting, the killings are lame and the special effects (if any) are below par. As is the acting of all concerned. What remains is a lot of running and screaming and a whodunnit-aspect as to the identity of the killer. It's hardly a surprise when it's revealed in the end, and the motivation of this killer is totally unrealistic. So don't bother with this cabin-horror, I should advise: among so many other (and better) ones this one is totally redundant.

Not Another Dumb Slasher Movie.
veritybingo12 April 2021
Intelligently written, believable female conversations may not be every horror fan's cup of tea, but it's not only a refreshing change from the norm, it aids to help suspend disbelief.

Yes, on the surface it is a standard 'friends in a log cabin being picked off one by one' story, and yes, the volume of dialogue might slow things down a little, but this all makes it seem like a situation you could imagine being in, despite its formulaic plot.

It also has a nice touch in commenting on the nature of today's like-driven narcissistic society.

Feminist supernatural slasher?
jmbovan-47-16017323 February 2020
The story was adequate and had some interesting moments between characters. Ultimately, the ending was just another simple "twist" trying to be interesting. The plot was mildly interesting given the set up and the question of is it a supernatural force or sadistic human. Other than that, subpar movie effort.

Slasher done right
MsLSimon21 January 2019
Made the mistake of watching this by myself at night. Don't make that mistake too. This is seriously creepy. The slasher subgenre has a lot of duds, but this has some really new and unique situations that I have never seen before. One of the better indie films I've seen in a while.

Interesting Little Slasher with a Twist
Reviews_of_the_Dead24 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie when the co-writer and star, Jamie Bernadette, reached out to a social group I'm currently maintaining about this being on Amazon Prime. Since I like to support independent cinema and this sounding intriguing I decided to give it a viewing. The synopsis here is a six college best friends throw their own private graduation party that goes terribly wrong when an uninvited guest arrives. Five years later, the girls gather once again and endure a night of far more horror and bloodshed.

As the synopsis states, we start with this group of women. There's Joey Taylor (Bernadette), Melissa White (Chantelle Albers), Heather (Dominique Swain), Katie (Jessica Morris), Sahara (Tania Nolan) and Becca (Monique Rosario). They're partying and Tyler (David Villada) shows up. He's there to bring drugs and decides to party with them for a bit. This bothers some of them, but Katie is interested in him. They all drop acid and Katie goes into a room with Tyler. He makes things odd by putting on a skull mask and the women are concerned when the bedroom door is locked. We don't see what happens, but from the aftermath, the women are all covered in blood as Tyler was killed.

It turns out that they punished him for the attempted rape of Katie. They weren't punished, but Joey is struggling with the knowledge of what they did. Melissa 'kidnaps' her 5 years later to go a cabin that her family owns. Joey has distanced herself from everyone to cope so her friends are trying to get back. The night goes pretty well until Melissa is showing different things of her work on a highlight reel. After the event, she got somewhat of a career and being famous from it. Talking about what happened bothers Joey as she was told that they weren't going to on this trip. It is then that all of the women reveal, they've been seeing Tyler in his mask stalking them. The question becomes, is it his ghost or someone messing with them? The truth is much more sinister than they expected when the masked person arrives here and they start to get picked off.

Now I do have to say at the start of this, I thought that this sounded interesting and seeing how it plays out, I thought that overall this worked. Coming out now during this 'Me Too' era is really intriguing, because under the influence these six brutally murdered a guy that was attempting to rape their friend. I do find this to be a bit implausible that they wouldn't have any type of repercussion, because they still murdered a guy. Not only that, they brutally stabbed him multiple times. It is set 5 years after the fact, so there could have been something it was just glossed over.

Something I do have to say is that outside of Joey and Melissa, they really don't flesh out the characters all that much. I get that having six of them makes it tough and I'm assuming that number was selected due to the fact that it gives a higher body count at the end. I will have a brief spoiler section at the bottom of this, but the reveals with Joey were good. I think part of that was probably Bernadette playing her as well as coming up with the story and co-writing this movie. I do think that the rest of the characters are distinct though, but they're pretty generic stereotypical characters movies like this have. Pretty much stock would be another way to put them.

This does kind of play out like a slasher film as well. We don't really get a lot of stabbing deaths, but we do get quite a few people picked off until we get to our final girl. I have to say though, this movie is kind of boring. I think the reason being is that it really takes so long to get into the killing. It spends a lot of time introducing our characters and it also makes us wait a bit to understand what happened fully that fateful night. There are a couple of interesting reveals at the end, but I'll get to that during spoilers.

As for the acting, I did think that it was pretty solid. Bernadette does well at being someone who is attractive yet brooding. I feel bad for her as she never fully got over what happened, despite everyone pressuring her to. Albers is also solid as well. I think that her character makes sense to what is established so where she ends up I did buy. Swain is an interesting one as I remember when she was casted in the remake to Lolita. I shouldn't factor in it, since she doesn't look older, but I just knew that she was quite a bit older than the rest so I have issues believing they all graduated the same year. Her performance worked and actually one of the better ones for sure. Morris, Nolan and Rosario all round out here for what was needed. Despite being stock characters, they do bring enough of their own flair here for sure.

When it comes to movies like this, I do get concerned with how well they will do the effects. To be honest, I thought for the most part they were good here. They went practical aside from a couple of things. I could tell that the fire we get was CGI, but it looked better than some I've seen. There was only one scene right near the end that didn't really work for me and wasn't great. Aside from that, we get some trippy effects when they're doing drugs. I don't know since I've never used acid if that is how it looks, but we get this later when they don't know if they're really seeing Tyler or not. I would say that the cinematography was pretty solid though.

Now with that said, I thought this was a pretty solid film overall. I think it has an interesting premise and I would actually like to pick Bernadette's brain where she came up with story and how much of it was from personal experience. Not all of the reveals work for me, but overall the story works. I did find it a bit boring after we get introduced to our characters to really get into the killings. The acting was solid across the board, no issues there. The effects aside from a couple things were good. The soundtrack really didn't stand out to me, but it also didn't hurt or take me out of it. Overall I'd say that this is to be slightly over average movie. With just a few minor changes it could have been a bit higher.

My Rating: 6 out of 10

SPOILERS:

The reveal is that the killer is Melissa. She is an aspiring actress and was doing pretty well fresh out of college after that fateful night. She was doing the normal low grade celebrity thing over this tragedy much like you would see with reality stars. Now that it is drying up, she is trying to use this night to create another tragedy and wants to have Joey 'survive' it with her. The problem is that Joey never got over it and she doesn't want that. Melissa then knows she has to kill her too. She tries to get cute with some of the deaths and Joey's is one of them.

She tries to stage it as an overdose, but the problem is that she had no idea Joey is now a drug addict after that night. The amount of drugs doesn't kill her due to a higher tolerance. I think this is a bit of a cheat, as Joey doesn't look like someone who is that deep into drugs that the dose wouldn't kill her. This doesn't ruin it, as someone who has seen the effects of drug use on people, they really can't hide it if they're that deep. Doesn't ruin the movie, but is a bit of a cheat for me. I do like how Joey is getting exactly what Melissa was working for in the end as a fitting ending though for sure.

More Interersting Than Expected
angelakenney-5298211 July 2020
6 friends drive down to a secluded cabin in the woods after being estranged since their involvement in a self-defense murder. As the night goes on, they all start to admit to seeing visions of this long-dead rapist/attacker and believe he's returned to kill them off. Is he a spirit? A demon? Or has one of them maybe lost their mind and turned to killing their friends?

The 6th Friend is a beautifully shot and reasonably well made slasher film with an all female cast (minus the attacker) that might suffer from a few bad lines of dialogue, a couple of uninspired performances, and an almost total lack of tension, but it's not without its positives.

It does try to bring in a psychological and/or supernatural aspect into the film which keeps the audience on their toes and it's nice to see a movie about a bunch of women who stick up for one another. Once the killer is revealed, The 6th Friend ends on an exciting and swelling high note.

The 6th Friend might not be the most inspired indie slasher film on the block, but there's enough to recommend about it to give it a try.
