Sex & Nudity

  • There is a sex scene depicted between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. However, it is not overly graphic, and they are fully clothed during the scene.

Violence & Gore

  • Macbeth sends murderers after Banquo and his son. Banquo is shot by a crossbow but his young son escapes. Not overly graphic, but it is rather intense.
  • The scene where Macbeth kills Duncan shows some blood, but the quick shots cutting in and out obscure the violence and prevents it from being too gruesome.
  • Intense battles and murders throughout. It is relatively bloody at times. Nothing extraordinarily explicit, however.
  • The murder of MacDuff's family is the most disturbing scene in the film, but most of the violence is not actually shown on screen

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • It's implied that Macbeth is drunk on a few occasions by the way he acts and talks. He is also shown drinking from a goblet that presumably contains alcohol.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The battle scenes and murders throughout are intense but not overly graphic.
  • Overall, the tone of the film is very macabre and dark

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Rather than sending murderers to MacDuff's house, this film version depicts Macbeth's men capturing Lady MacDuff and the rest of his family and burning them at the stake. The scene is rather disturbing, but the scene cuts away before the fire is actually lit.
  • The final battle between Macbeth and MacDuff features copious amounts of violent bloodshed, with MacDuff having his arm and nose violently broken during the fight. MacDuff ultimately stabs Macbeth, and blood is seen spilling onto the ground. This, however, is not inconsistent with Shakespeare's play.
  • The opening shot shows Macbeth's child lying dead on a funeral pyre. The pyre is then shown being lit on fire as part of the funeral rites.
  • There is a scene on the battlefield were a young man gets his throat slit open. This is done in slow motion and very graphic.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The scene where MacDuff's family is captured and burned alive is the most disturbing scene in the film, though the violence itself is not depicted.
  • The opening scene depicts a dead baby lying on a funeral pier. This is very disturbing and sad. The implication is that this is Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's son. There is no explicit mention that they ever had a child, but this interpretation of the play is that the loss of their child began them on their descent into madness and murder.
