First there was the disastrous finale of Bones and now Becket and Castle are on the ropes.
It all began a couple of episodes ago, while Castle was playing an online game with a Chinese girl and Becket appears in the doorway, doing a very sexy come-on. What does Castle do? He keeps playing the game, dismissing Becket with a 'not now'. OOPs! Each episode since has closed with Becket with a far-away, questioning look in her eyes.
This episode carries the line forward with Becket interviewing for a big Washington job and I'm going, "Sh*t, can't ANY writers just let a happy relationship just stay happy!" As the episode continues, counterpointing the mystery with a sinking Becket/Castle boat, I'm going "For God's sake, Castle is a writer who can live anywhere. There's no reason for this!" And, seriously, there is no good reason for the writers to handle things this way. Except for the way they wind up handling it.
Castle's immaturity has been emphasized to the point of ridiculousness this season (with a few stellar exceptions, like Alexi's kidnapping) and this episode is no exception; when he finds out about Becket's interview, he assumes that it's all about her leaving him and storms out of her apartment. Only this time, before I can even start screaming, everything changes and god know how many of the threads that have been dangling since the first season's first episode are integrated into the show's master tapestry.
Those last scenes are as serious and dramatic as Castle has ever gotten, understated with a focus like a red-hot laser, raising the episode from disaster to masterpiece, tying all of the episodes since Paris into a coherent whole.
I'd say a little more but there's no way I'm going to spoil the impact of those last scenes for anyone who hasn't seen them.
