Taylor Swift has long been one of the most favorite personalities in the music industry, and rumors have been going around that she will soon become ginormously favorite in the entertainment industry too. And while some may argue these rumors and speculation started with Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming Deadpool 3, we tend to differ, because, truth is, these actually started nearly 7 years ago.

Although it may seem surprising for those who forgot or didn’t know, these initially originated back in 2017 with a track from Swift that had fans convinced the billionaire singer was going to defeat Thanos. However, that never came to be, and those rumors drowned, but even then, that ain’t the end of the speculation around Swift joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Uncanny Timing? Marvel's New Dazzler Comics Revive Taylor Swift Deadpool Cameo Rumors - Main Image
Marvel recently announced the return of mutant pop princess Dazzler in a four-part comic book series where she embarks on a world tour, joined by her fellow mutants Domino, Strong Guy, Multiple Man, Shark Girl, and Wind Dancer.
While welcomed by fans, the timing of the announcement and the choice of mutant to highlight in the new X-Men era From the Ashes is odd, considering speculations of Dazzler’s appearance in the upcoming blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine, with no less than the global pop superstar Taylor Swift rumoured to play Alison Blaire.
Dazzler writer Jason Loo also teases fans to "get ready to sing along to some new, original songs off of her new album! Some of them may be about her exes."
Swifties are also on the case, with some scouring the songstress’ latest...

We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but our good friends and Deadline have decided to go back to last year and reveal the most profitable box office blockbusters of 2023. It was a short trip down memory lane, but it was done properly because all the numbers were finally in, and there was enough time to objectively interpret the facts and numbers before us. This is why we decided to report on this list.
The list will contain a total of 10 titles and, as you will see, Disney falls short in this list (unlike the box office bombs list), but there are a lot of animated films there and quite a few surprises. This list doesn’t account for the total gross earnings of a movie but speaks about the profit made by the movie based on the budget and the earnings, which is a thing...

“The Fall Guy” (Universal) opens in the U.S./Canada Friday — one of the most prestigious spots on the movie release calendar. Since “Iron Man” in 2008, and since Disney initiated the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012, the first weekend in May has marked the start of the summer movie season.
When MCU “Deadpool & Wolverine” left this date in favor of July 26, Universal grabbed it — and the expectations that come with it. As a result, there’s an unusually wide range of estimates for the domestic opening weekend: We hear everything from the high 20s to over $50 million, with consensus closer to $35 million or a bit more.
An opening weekend of $35 million-$40 million would be a big improvement over a disastrous April (where “Civil War” was the sole film to debut over $25 million), but that would be only the fifth-best opening of 2024. Historically, this date tops any opening gross and usually...

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

The pop star has been having a dream run as one of the biggest singer-songwriters in the world as she continues her Eras Tour. Her concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour also became the highest-grossing concert film of all time.

AMC Theatres, the world’s largest cinema chain, is leaning into distribution.
The company is expanding its distribution team with a key hire and promotion, underscoring its commitment to releasing its own movies in addition to showcasing titles from traditional and independent studios. AMC Theatres launched its distribution team with the premieres of last year’s concert films, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.”
Stephanie Terifay has joined AMC in the newly created position of VP of Distribution. She will begin on April 26. In this role, Terifay is responsible for engaging the music industry to develop future projects, tailoring distribution strategies and marketing plans to maximize fan engagement. In other words, Swift and Beyonce’s stadium tours were the first but won’t be the last to grace the big screen — if AMC can help it.

Road House and Quiet on Set brought some variety to the Nielsen streaming charts in March.
During the week of March 18 to 24, there were four different streamers represented among the Top 5 streaming titles — Netflix, Prime Video, Max and Disney+. According to Nielsen, this is a rarity that has only occurred once before, when the same four platforms shared the stage in October 2022.
In the top spot was Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, which debuted all eight episodes on March 21. In its first four days on the streamer, it amassed 1.37B minutes viewed.
Second place went to Prime Video’s Road House, the reimagining of the 1980s Patrick Swayze film, which was right behind 3 Body Problem with an impressive 1.32B minutes viewed. This is particularly noteworthy because it is far shorter than 3 Body and therefore at a significant disadvantage when it comes to these streaming rankings.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) had some tough competition in its debut week on Disney+.
The film landed on the streamer March 14 and racked up 677M minutes in its first few days on the platform, according to Nielsen. That placed it at No. 8 overall on Nielsen’s streaming list for the week of March 11 to 17.
Nielsen says viewing was driven by an audience that was 70% female, and it was pretty evenly distributed across age ranges. Naturally, the 18-34 demo had the highest concentration of viewing with 26%.
Meanwhile, The Gentleman and Love Is Blind were jockeying for the top spot, with the former ultimately winning out. Although Love Is Blind marked its fourth consecutive week with over a billion viewing minutes (1.44B to be exact), it fell to third place this week.

The trailer for Paramount’s Smile 2 came as a surprise Thursday morning during the studio’s session at CinemaCon.
Alhough not introduced, when the images first hit the screen, it was easy to assume Paramount was distributing a Lady Gaga concert movie (it truly felt that way). But as it continued, it was clear Naomi Scott was playing a pop star who encounters a number of terrorizing smiling fans and associates (including Lukas Gage) in the Parker Finn-directed and -written sequel to the $217 million-plus global grossing 2022 horror hit.
Gags were aplenty this morning from Paramount CEO Brian Robbins and Domestic Distribution President Chris Aronson, the latter who showed up dressed as a gladiator, and they continued after they dropped the trailer. Following its reveal, Aronson called out to circuit heads Sean Gamble of Cinemark, Eduardo Acuna of Regal and Adam Aron of AMC, who individually were projected on screen smiling (get the stunt?...

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” was the eighth-most-streamed title in the U.S. during the March 11-17 viewing window, per Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings. The concert film was watched for 677 million minutes during its first four days on Disney+.
Nielsen also notes that “Eras Tour” viewers were 70% female and “well distributed” across age ranges, though the 18-34 demographic came in strongest at 26%.

Adam Aron, as always, remains unruffled by widespread talk of AMC Theatres’ financial woes.
At CinemaCon, the annual gathering of exhibitors and Hollywood studios that’s underway in Las Vegas this week, there’s loads of chatter as to the financial health and future of the world’s largest theater circuit, and whether a restructuring is in the offing. According to Aron, who sat down with The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, the answer is an emphatic “No.”
“Personally, I think it’s inconceivable that AMC would have to restructure like Regal Cinemas did and file for Chapter 11. One of the things I’m very proud of is that going into the pandemic, AMC was in very strong position. We are the biggest and best movie theater chain in the world. What happens in Vegas… fuels a year’s worth of hope for theatrical exhibitors.
From April 8-11, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, Universal, Paramount, and Disney — not to mention the faith-friendly Angel Studios and anime distributor Crunchyroll — have four days at CinemaCon to wow theater owners (and the press) with their plans for the summer blockbuster season and beyond. However, there are only so many times that NATO, the MPA, and the studios can say “movie theaters are back!” without sounding like Chicken Little.
The reality is 2024 will be lucky to match the levels of last year, and 2025 has its own challenges if the industry faces another round of strikes. Even so, Adam Aron’s hundreds of soldier-owners from his AMC army will be looking to him for reassurance at the world’s biggest exhibition pep rally.

Will pink and black loom large this week in Las Vegas?
After all, this Monday kicks off CinemaCon, the annual exhibition industry trade show and weeklong opportunity for studios and theater operators to wax poetic about the magic of going to the movies. And in 2023, there was no greater manifestation of the claim that the movie business is back than the cultural craze of “Barbenheimer.” The inextricably linked “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” complete with double features of the cotton-candy-coated and ultra-dark blockbusters, dominated the zeitgeist for months on end.
But just as the past can serve as a reminder of the collective joy of moviegoing, last year’s events may also plague the industry. Another inevitable topic at CinemaCon will be the two labor strikes that shut down production for months and forced studios to delay several tentpoles to 2025. The box office was just starting to recapture its pre-pandemic stride, so...

Trafalgar Releasing and Cj 4DPlex are launching a strategic partnership that will focus on producing, programming, delivering and marketing four K-pop cinema releases globally in 2024. The films will be shown across a combination of premium formats such as ScreenX, 4Dx, Ultra 4Dx and traditional cinema locations.
Trafalgar Releasing moved into the K-pop market with the 2018 concert film, “BTS: Burn the Stage the Movie.” The company said it has since generated more than $120 million in box office revenue from K-pop releases.
The first project to launch the partnership is “aespa: World Tour” in cinemas, a special cinematic presentation capturing the group’s global tour, which will screen in more than 45 countries on April 24 and 27. The additional three titles will be announced throughout the year.

With hits like Dune: Part Two, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4, the domestic box office may finally be shaking off the ashes from the double strikes, now counting close to $1.8 billion, with moviegoing gaining momentum.
We told you quite early — at last year’s CinemaCon — that the strike clouds were bound to send a monsoon across the business, and indeed they did.
But despite the theatrical business’ increasingly robust expectations for late summer and beyond — many peg Marvel Studios/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine as the breaking of the dam — things have felt a bit touch and go, and there’s been much chatter that exhibition is set for a reckoning; that mid-level exhibitors are bound to fold into each other, and even that the No. 1 circuit AMC Entertainment, which is saddled with about $4.8 billion in debt, is bound for bankruptcy.
Not so — or not...

Updated with closing stock price: AMC Entertainment shares fell more than 14% Thursday to close at $3.72 on jitters over the company’s financial health. The nation’s biggest theater chain said early in the day it might sell up to $250 million-worth of stock, citing a low first-quarter box office. Shares were down more than 16% before the opening bell.
The company said in an SEC filing it intends to use the net proceeds, if any, from the sale “to bolster liquidity, to repay, refinance, redeem or repurchase its existing indebtedness and for general corporate purposes.”
Reasons for the offering, it said, are to enhance “liquidity in light of the low first quarter box office, resulting in part as previously disclosed from” Hollywood strikes last year, as well as “increased seasonal working capital requirements, and the resulting cash burn the Company has experienced.”

Two new biopics about 20th-century Black icons entered the home viewing charts this week: “Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount), the film about the legendary reggae artist nearing $100 million in theaters, and “Shirley” (Netflix), about the first Black Congresswoman and one-time presidential candidate, led newcomers in a week that mostly repeated top titles.
“One Love” is #1 at Fandango, which ranks by revenue. The VOD platform won’t be able to provide its whole top 10 until Monday, but the company confirms that placement. Somewhat surprisingly, “One Love” is #3 at iTunes, behind “Anyone but You” (Sony) and “The Beekeeper” (Lionsgate), now both at $5.99 to rent after earlier strong PVOD performances at $19.99.
Both Fandango and Google Play chart by transactions. But normally a film with the success in theaters that “Bob Marley” had would debut at #1. It’s unclear, with data beyond relative rankings absent, whether this might be just because the reduced price...

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” has entered its streaming era, now available to watch exclusively on Disney+. The concert film, which arrived in theaters Oct. 13, 2023, includes even more content than the theatrical version, which already captures the three-plus hours of show that Swift puts on.
After its launch in theaters, the film was available as a digital rental in December on Swift’s birthday, the 13th. The digital version included performances of three extra songs: “Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer,” and “Long Live” on set.
But the Disney+ version of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” includes an additional four secret songs. Good Morning America led a countdown to the film’s arrival on Disney+ by teasing three of these four songs — “Maroon,” “Death by a Thousand Cuts” and “You Are in Love (Taylor’s Version).”

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour makes its streaming debut on Disney+ Thursday, and, at first, it won’t quite measure up to the stadium experience.
In May 2023, my five closest friends and I attended Swift’s show at MetLife Stadium — and it wasn’t just a concert. For a group of single twenty-something women, it was, in many ways, our wedding, our bachelorette party and maybe even our own funeral! What I mean is, it was a ritualistic occasion — a holy sacrament.

Few questions have loomed larger over the film industry since the pandemic than “How do we save movie theaters?” The streaming boom kept us entertained through years of isolation and provided media companies with a massive influx of content, but no business model has come close to offering the potential profitability and cultural impact of old fashioned theatrical releases. Cultural phenomenons like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have proven that there’s still a large market for great theatrical movies, but some of the country’s top theater and marketing executives stress that one-off successes haven’t solved the industry’s deeper problems.

Many documentary filmmakers want their work on the big screen and not small. So, what gives? Why isn’t that happening?
One could argue that we haven’t seen a doc boom in cinemas since 2018 which served up such breakouts as Won’t You Be My Neighbor ($22.8M), Three Identical Strangers ($12.3M) and Rbg ($14M). The pandemic is partially to blame as audiences have savored non-fiction stories on streaming, i.e. the Netflix series, Tiger King.
“It’s not that it doesn’t work theatrically,” explained Lionsgate EVP Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Charlotte Koh who was part of the SXSW session “How to Tell True Stories: Narrative vs. Documentary”.
“It’s becoming more competitive to get people’s attention because there is so much documentary product out there that can be watched through streamers and other ways,” Koh added.
Also on the panel moderated by Variety documentary journalist Addie Morfoot were Bryn Mooser,...

The singer’s cult fan following and immense influence over the younger generation has made her a pop culture phenomenon. In addition, Swift’s romance with Travis Kelce has ensured that there has been a meteoric rise in the popularity and financial growth of football.

The theatrical releases that saw the highest median return on investment (Roi) in 2023 were those whose casts reflected racial representation proportionate to the real-world U.S. population, according to the latest Hollywood Diversity Report from UCLA.
Horror movies like M3GAN (14.0 Roi) and Saw X (7.5 Roi) were among the films whose casts were 41 to 50 percent Bipoc, the category with the highest median Roi (1.1). Conversely, the category with the lowest Roi (-0.25) was the least diverse (less than 11 percent Bipoc cast). According to U.S. census data, 43.6 percent of the country in 2023 was Bipoc.
Proportionately representative movies also earned a median of $114.2 million worldwide, the second highest median box office take behind only movies whose casts were 31 to 40 percent Bipoc ($119.8 million). That latter category included the billion-dollar Barbie ($1.4 billion, to be exact), which won the worldwide box office in 2023. The lowest-earning category was again the least diverse, with a median of just $18.2 million globally.

Taylor Swift’s record breaking Eras Tour concert film will stream on Disney+ from the 14th March – here’s the trailer.
It’s a good time to be a Swiftie. The superstar songstar recently won the Album of the Year Grammy Award for her 2022 album Midnights, and at the ceremony she announced that her new album would be called The Tortured Poets Department. It will be released on 19th April and you can pre-order a copy from Swift’s official store.
Her Eras tour is soldiering on, visiting the UK later this year.
However, she gave us a heads up on the setlist by releasing The Eras Tour as a concert film. Directed by Sam Wrench, the film was produced and released without studio involvement, and currently stands as the highest grossing concert film of all time, with box office takings of over $261m worldwide.
Recently released to rent for a whopping £15.99 on digital platforms,...
