Vice Goes HBO!

After a short introduction by founder Shane "Smith" (not his real last name), the show is broken up into a couple short segments, which are basically a compilation of short documentaries like can be found on their youtube channel albeit in much better quality. This episode's segments focus vaguely around the concept of KILLER KIDS.

In ASSASSINATION NATION, reporter Ryan Duffy heads to the Phillipines to take a look at the cultural trend of political assassinations- of which the country has seen 1200 in the past 10 years. He discusses how, in a past election, a group of 54 of one Governor's supporters were gunned down in cold blood by political rivals and then goes on a ride-along with the Governor in his 100 car military-style convoy. Subsequently, he takes a look at the gun culture in the country- which includes a thriving underground (and illegal) gun production trade- and meets with a scarily armed Islamic militia that is made up, mostly, of children from 8-18 that are wielding home-made guns which include home-made Barrett .50 cal sniper rifles! (segment approx 10 mins)

In THE KILLER KIDS OF THE TALIBAN we follow Shane Smith in Kabul, as he investigates how the Taliban lures in and exploits children for suicide bombing campaigns within Afghanistan. He sits down with the leader of the NDS (which is effectively the Afghan Secret Police) who explains that the Taliban tend to to recruit boys (as young as 6), the illiterate, and poor because of their "lack of religious knowledge", which allows them to be easily indoctrinated by lies (such as, 'you'll survive the suicide bombing, but the enemy will die'). Smith then interviews a couple teenagers who were sent from Madrasas in Pakistan to carry out suicide bombings, but who were stopped and arrested before blowing themselves up (very saddening). Next, Smith heads off to talk with a leading member of one of the Taliban's sub-sects- who was recently released from prison after kidnapping a group of UN workers and westerners- about his thoughts on using suicide bombing as a tactic. Finally, he interviews a young girl who lost 9 members of her family, and was herself injured, in a sectarian suicide attack that targeted a religious festival they were attending. Very moving, yet disturbing at the same time. (segment approx. 15 mins)
