Florent Bernard wrote the movie thinking about Charlotte Gainsbourg in the role of Sandrine, but asked for a Charlotte Gainsbourg-like actress instead, thinking he could never get her for the movie. Fortunately, his producers were also producing Jane by Charlotte (2021) (her documentary about her famous mother), so they asked her and she liked the script. It's only after she accepted that Bernard had the idea of combining her with José Garcia; he then completely rewrote the character for him. He eventually read the script one Wednesday morning and said yes later the same day.
Florent Bernard's own parents broke up when he was a teenager (like the children in the movie), which didn't bother him and his brother too much, as many of their friends already had divorced parents. So Bernard and his brother told their parents that it was their problem, and their father took it badly, thinking that they didn't care.
Writer/director Florent Bernard watched a lot of movies about parents splitting up, and realized they were either comedies or dramas, with very few in between. Also, it was always shown from the parents' perspective, and never the children's, so he wanted to tackle this topic by making a bittersweet comedy, with nostalgia and funny scenes, while fully including the kids in the story.
The set of the car rental agency was shot in the seventh basement of the Saint-Anne parking lot in Dijon. It took three weeks for the crew to build the set, because of the logistics due to the ceiling height to get all the necessary materials all the way down there.
A few sequences were shot in the Burgundy region in France, near Dijon and Autun, where the director spent his youth. He wanted to showcase not just semi-rural France, but also not-great-looking places, like roundabouts, highway rest areas, roadside steakhouses, cheap hotels and commercial areas. His knowledge of the area turned out to be useful, as during shooting, a location couldn't be used because of the rain, so he thought about a suitable replacement nearby, called the town hall for permission and they ended up shooting there instead.
