For the first time since I started doing Overview/ Reviews, I found myself re-watching a program to try to catch missing details. The reason Twisted is the show that made me do this is because there is so much going on at times, that it is either pausing to jot down notes every few minutes, or having to re-watch the show. Thing is, Twisted actually has the ability to be something you can watch again, and again, and though I doubt I would care to see it one more time, the episode that is, I did find it interesting how much you can miss when you have your eyes going from notepad to screen and you miss the strong use of body language which has such a strong influence on everything.
Take Archie and Danny's interaction. It is really difficult to fully understand Archie, and the way he interacts with Danny makes it hard to understand if maybe he recognizes Danny may not be the killer, or if simply he may start to understand the reason why Danny acts the way he does and is the way he is. I mean, we don't know what Lacey may have told Archie about Danny, but we are starting to see a slow shift in the way he acts. But something really interesting he mentions is how Danny truly maybe a sociopath which as we continue on, we see it little by little as he knowingly tries to use his charm and even finds himself adapting to regain Lacey to his side. In a way, you are sometimes lost between thinking maybe he is trying to restore his fractured childhood, or maybe after five years of being put away, he is simply doing whatever he needs to get what he wants, even if he has to take his time.
My weak psychoanalysis of Danny aside, I think it should be mentioned that while he does seem slightly manipulative when it comes to Jo, at the same time it doesn't really seem like he is using her, but perhaps simply trying to help her progress and open up. With Rico, who I find myself loving as an awkward character, she is very much like a flower who refuses to blossom. She is safe within the petals and has Rico to keep her company. Meanwhile, Danny is like a bee who pollinates her and brings her a new scent which invigorates her life. Or in other words, he is showing her where she is, and what possibilities are out there. Now, the way he gets her to open up does seem manipulative, but it ultimately works for the best for her. Thing is, where is Rico among this is a issue. We don't really know what Rico is to Jo, much less vice versa, and be it my love for pairing characters together, or because Danny seems hot and heavy over Lacey, you sort of get a whirlwind view of the situation and people involved.
And really, that is something I really like about the show. Outside of Scott and Sarita, everyone seems to be three dimensional characters who can easily be seen as a villain in one moment, but can then transform and show they are simply human the next. With Danny being a prime example, we can see he is sneaky, manipulative and has some type of anger problem, but unlike crazy kids we see on the news who are portrayed as victims with pictures making them look meek, or other nonsense, we can see that Danny's persona is as much used for offense as it is defense. His sarcasm and charm is made to as much draw people in as to scare them. I mean, just paying attention to how he treats everyone shows this. With Archie in the episode he calls him out for bullying him and Archie, who is probably used to Danny physically lashing out, seems to pause for a moment and take notice that Danny is a bit fragile, and really maybe just swinging to have people keep their distance. Meanwhile, taking note of his interactions with Rico, though he and Rico vie for Jo's attention, you can see he understand how valuable Jo is and while he needs her, he understands Rico does too. Hence why he invited him to dinner in the last episode, as well as reminded Jo about her meeting with Rico during this episode.
Overall, I feel I could go on and on about this show and probably end up going in circles trying to analyze the complexity of Danny, the dimensions to Jo and Lacey, and how the rest of the cast help flesh out everything. Again though, I feel the three leads really make it so no one is carrying the show by themselves, but instead they are all bearing the burden of a interesting plot which could have easily gone south. Then, the side characters like Phoebe, Archie, and maybe more eventually, while they are just featured, it seems they all know how to play their role, but rather than just be glad for screen time, they show why they deserve to be on the show and collect a check in the first place. I really am just in some form of awe really.
