"Alienation", the second episode of this season's Perception, while giving an excellent insight as to how feelings towards others can affect one both physically and mentally, provides a clear parallel between the storyline and the relationships of the main characters. Near the beginning of the episode we learn of an abduction case in need of Dr. Pierce's expertise. Rather than the typical situation of a person being kidnapped by another, the wife believes that her current husband is an "alien" and that the last time she saw her "real" husband was before his business trip. After questioning the husband about the wife's behavior and then later evaluating Ellen , the wife, Dr. Pierce concludes that Ellen could have a condition called Capgras as a result of a ruptured aneurysm. Following this when Ellen starts to make the claim that Barbara is now an alien but not Gerry, Pierce suggests it may have to do with the level of affection she feels towards the particular person. As it turned out, the two (Gerry and Ellen) had briefly made out with one another. At that time, she did not label him as an alien. The end farther confirmed Gerry's love towards Ellen; it was after all him who we find out shot Preston, "the alien", for her. What wouldn't someone do for the one they love.

Meanwhile, Dr. Pierce was having difficult decisions of his own but was attempting to do what was best for his girl friend. One of the opening scenes shows him sleeping with Caroline. They see if being together will work out, this does not prove to be easy though. When Caroline asks if he is still taking his meds, he lies saying, "yes". On top of this, he is frequently visited by "Natalie", a figment of Dr. Peirce's imagination that is more of a representative of Caroline's younger self. He feels the need to admit these lies to Caroline towards the end of the episode and finally does so. Although this does not end well, the point is that he did what he felt was right.

On a side note, Kate helped Donnie out by pretending to still be married to him during a visit to his mother's. Even though their relationship was not mending back together, the overall push by Donnie was impressive on his part.
