Since the ending of ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ we knew that two of Hasbro’s biggest franchises exist in the same universe and that we might be going toward a crossover movie.
And this crossover has been a long time in the making. Since at least 2013 Lorenzo di Bonaventura expressed interest in a ‘G.I. Joe’ and ‘Transformers’ crossover film, with director Jon M. Chu also showing interest by July of the same year. Although the project seemed uncertain in June 2014 and was initially planned to be introduced at the end of ‘G.I. Joe 3,’ Paramount decided against it.
By July 2021, di Bonaventura insisted that the crossover was “inevitable,” despite Paramount’s reluctance. The crossover began to gain traction with ‘Rise of the Beasts’ in June 2023, establishing shared continuity between the franchises. It was officially announced at CinemaCon 2024, with Derek Connolly hired to write the script in June 2024.

Outside of the multi-billion dollar success of the Transformers franchise, feature-length adaptations of Hasbro properties have struggled to gain much traction at the box office. The two G.I. Joe movies both did unspectacular business, Battleship barely managed to turn a profit, and Jem and the Holograms couldn’t even earn back half of its tiny $5 million budget while in theaters.
In fact, their most lucrative venture outside the adventures of the Autobots and Decepticons are the two Ouija movies, but those R-rated horror films owe most of their success to Blumhouse’s business model more than their relation to the Hasbro-trademarked board game that served as the inspiration.
However, that isn’t stopping them from trying, with G.I. Joe set to undergo the reboot treatment yet again as the company tries to figure out a formula for success, with a Snake Eyes spinoff also set for release later this year.

The Hasbro Cinematic Universe hasn’t exactly taken off in the way that Paramount would have hoped, with both the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises currently in the midst of a creative reshuffle. The Autobots and the Decepticons are getting rebooted from the ground up following the disappointing box office that greeted both Michael Bay’s The Last Knight and spinoff Bumbleebee, while the brains behind the Joes still haven’t moved forward on a sequel to 2013’s Retaliation, although origin story Snake Eyes drops later this year.
Two movies in a decade isn’t exactly a great return for a blockbuster action franchise, and the fact that neither of the G.I. Joe movies managed to crack $400 million globally has no doubt kicked it down a few pegs on Paramount’s list of priorities. As a spinoff to a series that was never particularly beloved in the first place, the...

The young actor rocketed to stardom in 2018's Crazy Rich Asians, is currently on the big screen in The Gentlemen, and will take on the challenging role of one of the most beloved action heroes of a generation when he plays the title role in Snake Eyes: G.I. A G.I. Joe’s work is never done, as a new shared universe spinoff is in development, this one featuring Chuckles.
Yo, Joe, you got more fight in you, you know? And knowing, as they say, is half the battle. The G.I. Joe franchise may not have transferred to screen as smoothly as Hasbro’s other popular boy-centric toy line, Transformers, but it is still kicking after 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, with one spinoff in the works for next year centered on the character of Snake Eyes. Now The Hollywood Reporter revealed late Friday that Paramount Pictures is developing a second mysterious G.I. Joe spinoff.
What is currently known about the project is that Paramount has tapped Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec to write a screenplay for the new picture. The pair have a friendly history working on franchises for Paramount, having previously contributed to...

Just when you thought the G.I. Joe franchise had been quietly decommissioned, Hollywood finds a way.
After years of radio silence, Paramount has today blown the dust off its dormant action series to announce a release date for G.I. Joe 3: March 27th, 2020.
It’s the first tangible sign of development since the release of Retaliation in 2013, when G.I. Joe was placed on hiatus indefinitely to allow time for Dwayne Johnson’s busy schedule – not unlike Fast and Furious, the Jumanji star entered the series in time for Retaliation, which was a much-needed upgrade over the po-faced Rise of the Cobra.
Fast forward to now, and a G.I. Joe 3 is officially in the pipeline. Last we reported, Aaron Berg and D.J. Caruso (xXx: The Return of Xander Cage) had been hired to write and direct, respectively, though it’s unclear if any cast members (see: Johnson,...

Director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) keeps himself busy these days. He helmed and co-wrote last fall’s The Disappointment Room, which apparently lived up to its title, only to turn around and direct this weekend’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage just a few months later. He’s already attached to get behind the camera for G.I. Joe 3 and the horror thriller Selling Time, but that’s not all. He’s also, once again, eyeing the long-promised comic book adaptation Y: The Last Man, which looks to find life on the small screen.
While there have been multiple attempts to bring Brian K. Vaughan’s acclaimed graphic novel series to life, including 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s Dan Trachtenbergs’s try back in 2013, Caruso was perhaps the closest to bringing it to fruition, and he’s remained loosely attached ever since.

G.I. Joe meeting the Transformers is the kind of bold, ambitious storytelling you can only find inside studio executive boardrooms and 7-year-olds’ bedrooms, but despite the grabbiness of the concept—and an entire comic series to draw from—it’s yet to be realized on screen. Director D.J. Caruso recently lamented this in an interview with Collider, revealing that his original treatment for the still-gestating G.I. Joe 3 ended with the two Hasbro worlds colliding at last, thus creating a veritable maelstrom of merchandising synergy and large, shouty things. But alas, Paramount—in a situation familiar to anyone who’s ever had a play-date with a tyrannical child—can’t touch those robots until Michael Bay is finished with them. “They will eventually collide those two worlds and it’s probably when Mr. Bay decides he’s done with Transformers,” Caruso says, a moment that will come ...

Speaking to Collider to promote Vin Diesel's xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, director D.J. Caruso, who was hired to direct G.I. Joe 3 back in January 2015, has confirmed that the initial script for the "threequel" called for something fans have been requesting for years - a crossover with the Transformers franchise. However, two things happened; Paramount decided to form a writer's room to develop ideas, in a repeat of the process used to hammer out the script for Transformers: The Last Knight. The other hang-up, is that Michael Bay got wind of the idea and apparently vetoed it. "Well yeah but they’re not ready to do [G.I. Joe meets Transformers] yet. That’s exactly what they should do but they’re not ready to do that because in fact the script that I was developing, the two worlds sort of collided at the end and when they read it they were like,...

Despite G.I. Joe: Retaliation improving on its predecessor in every which way – story-wise and financially – Paramount’s gleefully over-the-top action franchise has since been placed on ice to accommodate Dwayne Johnson’s stacked schedule. xXx: Return of Xander Cage‘s D.J. Caruso was once in negotiations to helm a potential third installment in lieu of Jon M. Chu, who parted ways with the series to direct Jem and the Holograms at Blumhouse – and we all know how that one turned out.
But when G.I. Joe 3 was still in the mix two years ago, Caruso’s original pitch involved a crossover with Michael Bay’s Transformers, another of Paramount’s live-action juggernauts that will return later this year in the form of The Last Knight. Before touching base on that wildly ambitious concept, Caruso reflected on the moment when the G.I. Joe franchise ground to a temporary halt.

The Borderlands movie is being pitched as 'Mad Max in space'...
One of the many movies based on videogames heading our way is a film based on the Borderlands titles. Gearbox’s action RPG series began life in 2009, and the film version is being produced by Avi Arad (Spider-Man) and his son, Ari Arad.
The plan is to make an R-rated movie based on Borderlands, one that aims for a ‘Mad Max in space’ kind of feel.
A new writer has been hired too, with Aaron Berg set to pen the Borderlands movie. Berg previously took a pass at penning G.I. Joe 3.
No director has been hired for Borderlands as of yet, but we do know that Lionsgate is the studio behind the movie. More as we hear it…

"Section 6" and "G.I. Joe 3" writer Aaron Berg has been brought onboard to pen the script for the film version of the video game series "Borderlands" at Lionsgate.
Based on Gearbox Software's popular first-person role-playing shooter game which launched in 2009, the story is set on a frontier planet that was being mined by convicts for the Dahl Corporation.
The company abandoned them there to scavenge amongst the isolated settlements in the barren wastelands filled with dangerous wildlife. People still come to the planet though in search of a mythical vault of powerful alien technology.
The "Borderlands" franchise has sold over 26 million game copies since its launch. Avi Arad and Ari Arad will produce the film which is said to be an "edgy, R-rated" version of the material.

Strap on your duster jackets, folks, because it looks like Lionsgate is moving forward with their adaptation of the space western video game, Borderlands. According to THR, the studio has hired Aaron Berg to pen the script for the flick. If you haven't heard of Mr. Berg, there's a reason for it. The writer is a relatively new talent who was hired to write G.I. Joe 3 around this time last year. His only other credit is that of a spec script called Section 6, which was purchased by Universal back in 2013.
Obviously this is an early step of many in the entire film production process. With films like Warcraft and Assassin's Creed on the horizon, Lionsgate is no doubt getting its ducks in a row for its own video game property in hopes that the aforementioned films will find a big audience. Back when the studio first nabbed the rights to the video game,...

The chances of G.I. Joe 3 making a 2016 release seem slim, as Paramount hires a writer to start over on the project.
The current plan with G.I. Joe 3 is for Paramount to have the film in cinemas at some point in 2016, but to date, that's not been confirmed. Certainly the studio is going to need to get a crack on to meet such a deadline, as production does not seem close to starting. Furthermore, the studio has hired a new writer to take a crack at the script.
The writer concerned is Section 6's Aaron Berg, and he's basically going back to square one now. The earlier drafts of the G.I. Joe 3 screenplay, that had been written by Evan Daugherty and Jonathan Lemkin, are seemingly not being used.

Aaron Berg has been brought in to write the screenplay for G.I. Joe 3 and will work with director D.J. Caruso to revamp the action franchise based on the Hasbro toyline. THR James Gunn says he has turned in his treatment for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and will meet with Marvel on Friday and "will start working on the screenplay next week." There have been rumors the Captain Marvel character, which will have her own film in 2018, will have a brief cameo in the film and this obviously makes for good speculation. After wowing Hollywood with his spec script Section 6, up-and-coming scribe Aaron Berg has been tapped by Paramount to pen a new script for G.I. Joe 3, which will revamp the action franchise with an eye toward setting up future installments.
DJ Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) is directing the threequel, which is expected to see the return of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Roadblock. Outside of that, plot details are scarce, though it has been rumored that the film will introduce M.A.S.K. leader Matt Trakker and villainous twins Tomax and Xamot.
The first two installments, 2009’s The Rise of Cobra and 2013’s Retaliation, proved box office hits but drew middling reviews and certainly didn’t leave moviegoers thirsting for a follow-up. The studio hopes to change that with Caruso and Berg, the latter of whom is taking the reins from previous scribe Jonathan Lemkin (Shooter). If all goes according to plan,...

The last attempt at a G.I. Joe film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, performed marginally better than its predecessor but still fell short of being the hit Hasbro was hoping it would be, even Dwayne “franchise saviour“ Johnson couldn’t salvage things. The third sequel is still moving forward and THR is telling us that Aaron Berg has just been tapped to write an all-new script for G.I. Joe 3. Previous scripts had been developed by Evan Daugherty and Jonathan Lemkin, but I...

Aaron Berg, the writer behind Section 6, the hot spec that detailed the origins of British intelligence agency MI6, is now tackling a different mission. The scribe has been tapped to pen a new script for G.I. Joe 3, and will work with director D.J. Caruso to revamp the action franchise based on the Hasbro toyline. The first two installments have proven to be box office hits — Rise of Cobra grossed $302 million while 2013’s Retaliation shot up $375 million – although fans have not exactly been crying “Go, Joe!” for sequels. Paramount hopes to change that with

Welcome to another horror/thriller round-up. This time around, we have details on who will play Death-Head in Rob Zombie’s 31, an update on the Tomb Raider reboot, and a look at The Crest of Westwood's tribute schedule for the legendary samurai film director Akira Kurosawa.
Rob Zombie's 31: Via his Instagram account, Rob Zombie revealed that Torsten Voges will play the villain Death-Head in his upcoming Halloween-set film, 31. Voges, who previously had a role in The Lords of Salem, is the first announced cast member for 31, which is currently available to fanback. For those unfamiliar with the film, here's the synopsis from Zombie:
"Welcome to my next film. It is called 31. It is the story of five random people kidnapped on the five days leading up to Halloween and held hostage in a place called Murder World. While trapped inside this man-made Hell they must fight to...

The big screen reboot of Tomb Raider movies forward, as a new writer is hired...
The big screen reboot of the Tomb Raider movie series is an active project for Warner Bros, which it's developing alongside MGM and producer Graham King. Between the three, they're overseeing, producing and distributing the new movie, which is unlikely to have anything in common with the two not very good Lara Croft films to date, that starred Angelina Jolie.
The latest on the new Tomb Raider is that a new writer has been recruited to take a stab at the screenplay. Evan Daugherty has landed the job, with his previous credits including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Snow White And The Huntsman. He's also been working on the upcoming G.I. Joe 3.

Tomb Raider is getting a reboot in movie form and to help fast track it to theaters WB and a new writer has joined in! Come check out what that means for the upcoming movie!
MGM was already working on rebooting the Tomb Raider franchis in movie form, and now they have some financial backing from WB. According to Deadline, WB has stepped in to help finance and produce the film. In other words, the film just got a much larger budget and that can only be good news. At least we hope!
On the flip side, Evan Daugherty has stepped in to be the new writer for the franchise. His previous work includes Tmnt, Show White and The Huntsman, Divergant, and G.I. Joe 3. This is a bit worrying being that all these films are action and "blockbuster" oriented films, and that isn't entirely what we want. The new...

The two Tomb Raider movies starring Angelina Jolie were, in my opinion, pretty bad, and judging by the way most people comment any time it's announced a movie adaptation of a popular game is announced, no one else liked them much either. And, interestingly enough, they didn't really make all that much money. The first one grossed only $274.7 million worldwide back in 2001 on a $115 million budget, while the sequel only managed $156.5 two years later on a $95 million budget. So, why have we been hearing about a possible Tomb Raider reboot for about six years nowc Well, the reason it isn't going away is because the most recent "Tomb Raider" videogame release sold around 7.5 million copies and a new game is on the way. Sounds like good timing to get a new movie in the works. Paramount distributed the first two Tomb Raider movies, but now Deadline reports it will be...

MGM’s big screen reboot of video game adaptation, Tomb Raider, has hit the headlines once more with news that Warner Bros. has joined the project. Now that the two studios are combining their efforts – WB will partner and distribute – could we be in for more of Lara Croft’s archaeological adventures sooner than we thought? According to Deadline that’s a strong possibility, as their sources indicate that “the reboot is on a fast track.”
Alongside this major development comes word that Evan Daugherty is now the latest in a long line of writers tasked with penning a script. His experience with big-screen blockbusters includes work on Snow White And The Huntsman, Divergent, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the upcoming G.I. Joe 3. This is the first we’ve heard on the screenplay side of things since Buffy showrunner Marti Noxon began work on a draft in 2013. Prior to her engagement,...

Deadline reports that Evan Daugherty has been chosen to write Tomb Raider, the upcoming reboot being developed by MGM and producer Graham King. Joining them though is Warner Bros., and they will distribute the film (which doesn't have a release date as of right now as it's obviously still in the very early stages of development). Daugherty has a varied and lengthy list of past projects, including Divergent, the upcoming G.I. Joe 3, Snow White and the Huntsman, and last year's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Tomb Raider movies which starred Angelina Jolie grossed over $400 million worldwide combined, and with moviegoers demanding more strong female characters, this property should now find a lot of success. It's mentioned that the reboot is being put on the fast track and that it will feature a much younger Lara Croft on her first adventure. ...

After successfully refocusing its G.I. Joe franchise around Dwayne Johnson’s Roadblock in 2013’s G.I. Former mercenaries in charge of Cobra’s corporate front, Extensive Enterprises, the pair lead the fearsome Crimson Guard and also share an empathic bond, which lets them communicate telepathically and feel one another’s pain. Paramount may have finally found a director for G.I. Joe 3. After G.I. Joe: Retaliation helmer Jon M. Chu jumped ship to make Jem and the Holograms for Blumhouse, the studio scrambled to find a replacement, with Casino Royale director Martin Campbell‘s name at one point ending up in the mix before he moved along. Now, though, Deadline is reporting that Disturbia director D.J. Caruso is in “early discussions” to take over the blockbuster franchise.
THR adds that, before a deal could be reached, Caruso would have to receive a stamp of approval from franchise star Dwayne Johnson, currently the only actor confirmed to return for the threequel. It makes sense that Ray Park’s Snake Eyes, Adrianne Palicki’s Lady Jaye, D.J. Cotrona’s Flint and Elodie Yung’s Jinx would all make appearances in G.I. Disturbia and Eagle Eye helmer D J Caruso is the current favourite to direct G.I. Joe 3
Paramount Pictures is pressing ahead with a third G.I. Joe movie, following the box office success of instalments one and two. But it must be hoping it can get a slightly better film out of the series this time around.
Part one was directed by Stephen Sommers, with the sequel helmed by Jon M Chu. And it was Chu who was initially its choice to return for a third movie as well. However, he's moved onto other projects, and so whilst Jonathan Lemkin has been working on a screenplay, G.I. Joe 3 has been missing a director.
Well, it might just have found one.

Last we heard any news about G.I. Joe 3, the script was getting written by Jonathan Lemkin of Shooter fame, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu was going to return behind the camera. However, Chu decided to take on an adaptation of Jem and the Holograms, so now Paramount Pictures has been on the hunt for a new director. THR reports it's Disturbia, Eagle Eye and I Am Number Four director D.J. Caruso who is currently in talks to direct the film in the other major toy-based film franchise from the studio that also brought us Hasbro's Transformers to the big screen from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Caruso had quite a dud on his hands after I Am Number Four, and he's pretty much been in movie jail since then. Martin Campbell, the director behind films such as Casino Royale and Green Lantern, is set to direct another big screen comic book adaptation. It’s an indie title called Sebastian X, and the project is set up at Voltage Pictures and Valhalla Motion Pictures.
The graphic novel was released in 2005 and created by writer Michelangelo La Neve (Song’e Napule) and drawn by Stuart Immonen. The screenplay for the film will be written by Bill Marsilii (Deja Vu).
The story follows an elite cop who, “after a near-fatal injury, is implanted with the memories of the world’s most notorious terrorist — Sebastian X — in order to infiltrate his group before their next attack.”
Terminator, Aliens, and The Walking Dead Producer Gale Anne Hurd is also set to produce Sebastian X alongside Oscar winner Nicolas Chartier (The Hurt Locker) and Craig J. Flores, along with original publishers Pierre Spengler and Fabrice Giger of Humanoids.

Like it or not, Paramount Pictures is still moving forward with G.I. Joe 3. Personally, I think they should throw out what they’ve done with this franchise and start all over from scratch. This film franchise should have been so much better than what it is.
According to Schmoes Know (a site that successfully breaks scoops every now and then) the studio is looking to hire Martin Campbell to direct the movie. Campbell directed the awesome James Bond film Casino Royal and the absolutely awful DC Comics superhero movie Green Lantern.
No offer has been made yet, and as of right now no negotiations are taking place. But he’s the guy that the studio and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura want to helm the feature. Campbell hasn’t made a movie since Green Lantern, but according to the report, the directing gig for G.I. Joe 3 is his if he wants it.

Although both movies drew highly negative reviews, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation both pulled in over $300 million apiece for Paramount, making a third installment of the action-adventure franchise all but inevitable. We learned way back in July that Lethal Weapon 4 scribe Jonathan Lemkin had been tasked with scripting G.I. Joe 3, and that Jon M. Chu would not be returning to direct, but outside of that, it’s been radio silence on the threequel. Now, however, there are whispers around the interwebs that Paramount has singled out a replacement for Chu: Casino Royale director Martin Campbell.
According to Schmoes Know, which claims to have learned of the helmer’s possible involvement via the same shadowy but “reliable” source that (rightly) revealed that Michael B. Jordan would be in the Fantastic Four reboot, Campbell is the studio’s top choice and has just entered talks.

A source for Schmoes Know has heard that Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura ("Transformers") want Martin Campbell to direct G.I. Joe 3. It's his if he wants it. Campbell hasn't directed a film since 2011's Green Lantern. That's understable as it is one of the worst comic book movies of all-time, despite what anyone tries to tell you. A shining example of how woefully bad a comic book movie can be if you don't respect or even understand the source material. However, Casino Royale is perhaps the best James Bond film of all time. It introduced us to Daniel Craig as 007, making him an overnight star, and its grittier take on the character reenergized the multi-decade franchise. How in the world did Martin Campbell directa gem like Casino Royale and a stinker like Green Lantern? It is quite the enigma. G.I. Joe 3 is currently being written by screenwriter Jonathan Lemkin,...
