From good to bad
cfarr-909949 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I had started watching this series and was very interested in the show initially. There was some great information about Greenland, and prospecting, and the cast had done a reasonably good job in presentation. After watching into the second and third season, I am, to be honest, disappointed with the progress the show has made. The audience is treated like they have no intelligence and the extra "drama" and overdone emphasis on the "danger" that exists, well, we do not need it hammered into our heads. This has proved in itself to be a very scripted show. Nothing new is brought forward on the show, even in the interaction among the team, or in the actual expedition. It now is just fake and quite frankly an insult to watch as an audience member. I would have more respect for the cast and crew, and producers of the show, if they discussed more of the techniques, people's backgrounds, what do they actually do, take some time to get to know each of the individuals, maybe we could relate somehow to these people? (or are they just actors for hire? then say so). Maybe they could go over the actual map as to who has claims where? are they companies? countries? Which countries are actually there and for what target? It's hard to believe after 8-10 months of planning that there was not enough fuel to run the dredger. No one went though the check list? Difficult for the viewers to believe that mistake. The temper-tantrums amid the group is embarrassing to watch. How are we suppose to take this show seriously with these childish outbursts? Americo, and John are the worst there. These boys are really not qualified, assuming the show is honest about what they do for a living, to be on this type of expedition. The helicopter dropped off the first group and not one person stopped to look for the massive boxes for their camp before the helicopter took off leaving them stranded. Another slap in the face to the audience. Please, do not make another season of this. I implore you. It is really poorly done, poorly scripted, and quite honestly, embarrassing to admit I've watched it this far, but it's like watching a car accident when you have no control, and all you can do is hope for a descent outcome at the end. I have never written a review before, but I could not hold it in anymore and decided to express my opinion. You, the producers, have the tools to do a great job, but you dropped the ball on the one in a big way. Sorry guys.

Ice Cold Gold Cry Babies!
stopcorporategreednow7 March 2015
The younger cowboy, and pony-tailed hippie cry and complain like a bunch of school girls on a weekend camping trip. Americo needs a pacifier. These grown men never developed emotionally past kindergarten. Childish tantrums, paranoia, and whining are the order-of-the-day for these babies. The team was incredibly naive, gullible, and greedy, believing that they were going to make claim to millions-of-dollars in rubies.

As soon as they discover another find the Greenland government will take that away as well. "Parliamentary democracy within a constitutional monarchy." Good luck on getting anything from the Kingdom of Denmark.

Americo, it's time to join your friends at the bowling alley, scratching of lottery tickets. Or you can become Inuit, and open up your very own Cry "Babies-R-Us®" store.

Correct some false info in other reviews

Warning: Spoilers
I first want to point out that this show is average, whether this is due to incompetent miners or the editors making them look that way is unclear. However this detracts from the show and spoiled what was a promising start in season 1.

That being said, many of the reviewers for this show have a lack of understanding about how mining is done/how dysfunctional small businesses often are. Having been in several small businesses and being a rock hound. (amateur miner)For example I can say that many of the dangers faced on the show were very real, the problem is that it is hard to show the viewers the danger.

As for Haddix's review claim about the red zone loss being faked... It sad to see that people don't do basic research before making claims. A quick Google search turns up the law mentioned in the show. Greenland's "Mineral Resource Act" which was amended in 2014, in particular section 32 which covers the need for natives to have priority in mining.

For Haddix I recommend you keep in mind that the bureau of minerals job is to lure in foreign business and these government agencies are known to say whatever it takes to get you to set up shop. Assuming you even called them.

red zone lost?
haddix315813 March 2015
i contacted the greenland bureau of minerals and petroleum. i inquired about any changes in the last 3 years with regards to changing of the availability/restriction of land available for mining. there have been 0 (zero) such changes. so, the red zone story line of losing rights to their $13.5 mil ruby jackpot has no basis in fact. so what can we conclude from this?

most likely: it never existed in the first place! it was a fictitious story line created to create viewer interest. obviously, it had to be sidelined going into the next season. if they hadn't, the show folks would have been up a creek with out a paddle. without killing the story line, they would have had to produce millions in rubies from a find that never existed. less likely: they actually found the red zone and it was as valuable as they said. if they had gone ahead and followed up next season, viewer interest would have decreased. the lure for the viewer is constant struggling characters with small occasional rewards. rich folks aren't as interesting. who knows, animal planet may be mining it themselves!

the skeptic guy

Pathetic
onyamatey26 July 2015
I am a semi professional gold miner in Australia, and I like to watch the gold mining reality shows like Gold Rush, Yukon Gold etc. Ice Cold Gold season 3 is nothing more than visual diarrhea. It is complete fabricated rubbish and more of a theater for the viewers than a reality show. Some examples......"omg omg the plane has a piece of steel in the tyre and it's flat, Americo just saved our lives"... ??? WTF ? Is anyone out there so simplistically stupid to actually believe this ? Before anyone is even allowed to board the plane it needs a full pre flight inspection by the flight crew, and they just happened to miss a flat tyre...are you serious ? If this really happened where the plane was actually going to taxi down the runway with a flat tyre the captain and first officer would be fired for their incompetence for breaking basic fundamental flight protocol. They hike for 4 hours, then walk across an active glacier tethered together in case they fall through the ice, then they climb a loose rock wall and take a small bag of samples. Upon returning to their camp they crush the ore and the geologist needs an eye piece to look in the pan for a tense 5 seconds then announces "we've got gold". They all hi-5 each other like they are rich. The camera shows quite large chunks of gold..... but the problem is the ore just came out of a rock mill/crusher which means everything was pulverized into powder, so how the hell did large chunks of gold get in the pan ? And if that shot of large chunks of gold was true, I doubt the geologist would need an eye piece to see large chunks, he would announce it straight away. It's just complete and utter bullsh1t ! And they are talking about laying claims on those sites and either mining it themselves or selling the claim to another company for some fast profit. So tell me this people.... who in their right sane minds would try to mine in Greenland if there is a 50 day window, and the only way to get in there is by helicopter ??? They are saying "You don't need large machinery to mine"... ummmmm, yes you do. Those idiots are talking about being millionaires and possibly billionaires from their gold discovery but I see a big problem with this. Absolutely nobody would ever invest a single cent into buying any sort of claim from these dick heads. If it takes 4 hours to hike across a glacier to get to a rock wall, how the hell am I supposed to drive a 20 ton excavator across the ice to reach an unworkable mining location? haha And how the hell is a helicopter supposed to lift any sort of equipment in heavier than a gold pan to actually mine enough gold to pay for the flights ?

I wouldn't be surprised if the people in this show are actually paid actors by The Animal Planet, and the whole show is nothing more than theater to keep simple brain washed people entertained with simplistic diarrhea and garbage. It's complete crap and the show should be removed from existence. It's disgusting and The Animal Planet should hold their heads in shame for producing such pathetic propaganda.

Absolutely one of the best prospecting / digging series i've ever seen.
Krosmatic21 August 2013
I want to start out with saying that this was the best TV series I've seen in a long time, and it can be compared with series such as Gold Rush Alaska, Bering Sea gold etc. The series was filled with action along with a good amount of comedy, drama as well as Ice cold gold. The drama was in good measurements, making it not all about just that, but instead of the actual purpose, to find what they came to Greenland for. Even though the season did not include a lot of episodes, you still got to see everything you wanted to see. I can not wait for another season, and I would recommend this series to anyone who is interested in any digging/prospecting at all.

Good Idea - poor direction
tommylkay3 May 2015
The 5 minutes of actual prospecting is extremely interesting, but the 20 minutes of grown men acting like children is about as exciting as watching the Kardasians or the Beverly Hill Housewives or Honey Boo Boo.

Get back to your geological prospecting and drop the childish scripted drama. I don't know if I can bring myself to watch another program which has so much potential, but delivers so little. I am a short termer, may not make it to the final episode.

Looking for gold or other minerals using some scientific process can be exciting. The raw land they are exploring is exciting. Spending three shows devoted to arguments and dissension is unappealing to me. Stop scripting and start prospecting if you desire to keep this show alive.

If you like the gold genre of TV shows, you are in for a treat!
faceicles25 March 2015
My family has been hooked on the "gold" genre of shows over the past few years. From watching Gold Rush on Discovery to Bering Sea Gold, I feel like I know enough about gold mining that I could go up to the Klondike and do it myself! With that in mind, I was very excited to start watching Ice Cold Gold. This is a whole different type of mining in one of the most dangerous places in the world - Greenland! Never before has a mining company went to such extremes to find gold and other valuable minerals. So far, season 3 is by far the best season of the show. During season 1, you understand the team's mission and season 2 you see them execute on the mission. But in season 3, it's nothing but adventure and gold mining. If you too like gold shows, then I highly recommend watching all three seasons (and future seasons) of Ice Cold Gold.

So fake.
eldritch3521 July 2015
Red Zone lost?

No because the Zone was already owned by another company.

This group keeps "finding" new areas with gold or other valuable minerals but if you dig just a little bit with google, all the places they go has been examined by others.

So all in all this is a fake show where they will never get a "claim"

To see such a show on Discovery saddens me.

/Allan

Come on Discovery, live up to you name.

This stupid 10 line rule! I've seen much shorter reviews than mine and yet I am forced to write lots of irrelevant stuff yet again just to get it passed....annoying :/

Can these guys "out-Hoffman" the Hoffmans?
mcdowell-102 August 2019
Never saw this program before last night. Parallels to "Gold Rush" are obvious except that there actually is a trained explorationist involved. But, as personality differences started to dominate the program, I kept waiting for one of the characters to start telling the audience about "my 40 years experience telling people about my 40 years experience." Can they "out-Hoffman" the Hoffmans?

Garbage
mjdiv20035 March 2015
If you like watching a show with a supposed "team" of amateur gold miners which the script constantly pits each member against each other in an overly dramatic context, then this is for you. Otherwise spare yourself the agony. Although, it could be especially good for people who like to see grown men wearing eyeliner. Like the Josh guy. I mean your heading into the complete wilderness but one of your necessary items, as a dude, is make up? You've got some serious issues.

But in all seriousness this is just the most pathetic excuse of good TV. Discovery continues to deliver just the worst scripted crap on television. Just a joke.

Ice Cold Fiction
wasimpson2 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'm sorry but how gullible does this show think we are, they pan for gold and use an eye piece to scan to try and find something from the POWDER!! and then low and behold they show us a pan full of decent sized Nuggets straight out of Gold Rush, not a lot of credibility here is there, plus you get tired of the continually stated dangers of the place, and our lot here are so so tired of Americo ranting on about all of this for his family, and how it is going to set them all up, quite frankly he is like an over excited pre school child. On the plus side the scenery is fantastic, realistically how many of us would ever get to go there, and as with all Discovery Shows it is very well crafted and put together, a shame about a couple of the Actors. This is a scripted fiction show backed up by the Rubies comment above, and when you pan crushed dust you cannot pull out decent sized Gold Nuggets!! Still worth watching as are all of the Discovery Shows, my favorite Channel. Cheers. Alan NZ.

getting worse with each new episode
ronaldkoenig27 April 2015
I have watched every episode to date. They continue to devolve. Perhaps mercifully, the series will conclude following this season.

Since the initial episode, we have watched both the team and the mission deteriorate. Based on the snippet shown as a preview for next week (May 3), the former team will become wildly diverse special interest groups and will even launch invectives at one another. How much fun will that be?

The series seemed like a good idea when it began, but it is time to end this soap opera. At least fire Americo and Eric, bring on a real mining expert and someone with specific knowledge and experience pertaining to Greenland's geology and mining history/prospects.

If there are truly riches to be discovered, these characters are not the ones to find them. Bad karma, terrible inexperience, very poor planning capabilities and zero Greenland knowledge. It is time to either get serious or go home.

I don't get it.
If you stake a claim of gold on Mars doesn't mean you can get it out of the ground. The entire premise of the show makes no sense. I give it 3 stars because of the beautiful scenery but that's all you get.

nice guys but laughable program!
mgfcars-873-30650518 December 2013
can any one in there right mind say that this was a good production?????? it was laughable!! No content just walking around doing tests and samples the action was "watch for falling rocks" and nothing more than a few pebbles coming down the mountains....you are telling me that in the two months they were there in the last hour in all the rocks and the snow they just happen to stubble on loads of ruby's!!!!! nonsense I don't believe it..ITS IMPOSSIBLE it does not add up and everyone knows it...if I am wrong then I would have had to have been there to see it myself as the odds of just finding that on a island covered in snow I just don't buy it sorry!

Red Zone
johnbrandt-6136918 September 2017
why wouldn't they set up camp right on the red zone instead of a impasse though mountainous trail that's unrealistic!I think this show is so phony that the writers weren't even fully awake when they were writing this.It boggles my mind why they wouldn't put the camp right on red zone not 5.12 miles over mountains. Stupid is what stupid does i guess!.And Americo i was really proud of you when you found your first gold don't let anyone tell you people with downs syndrome can't do something.you can do anything your heart and soul really wants to do !Right on brother you show them hey little buddy.Because you have down syndrome you can do anything any of those other guys can do working with you ! Congratulations again. manufactured drama and nonsense there's at least 4 that wear cowboy hats? But they're all like you say anyways hey?

Ugly, Ugly Americans on the Loose
crocellian16 December 2020
Thank God someone killed this thing. The damage to American this abortion did everywhere East of Portland, Maine, can't be over-stated.

The most important thing viewers can do is investigate "the Feldman brothers." Do it. Research who they are and what they are doing in 2020. As far as "Eric" goes," call every geology department you can. Ask as many questions as possible. You will figure out what sort of scam this series was.

Actors Deja Vu?
sunyataji15 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Are these guys actors? They're playing real life a little too much. Reality programming with actors playing at being real. I swear I've seen some of these guys on TV somewhere before.

*WARNING SPOILER ALERT* The scenes are set up way too much to be reality. They feel rehearsed.

SPOILER: And when the guy tells the story of why mining is important to him I didn't believe him. His delivery was orchestrated and felt false (although the facts he was telling could well be true)./SPOILER

The scenery is gorgeous and dramatic; and its rubbing off on the actors (they are, right?) playing roles of tough guys who are daring mother nature in the coldest part of the world (Dramatic music crescendo)

Throw in 'building a successful business' concerns with regular spats of tension, disagreement, and f*ck-ups and there's always drama going on —oh yeah, there's the "strike it rich" drama too.

Appealing to the gold rush 49'r in all of us there are exciting moments to live our fantasies through, though small and fleeting.

Could be a lot better, but I guess when you invest that much money into production you want a sure thing from the real people miners —who are anything but predictable in temperament or ability to 'move' people while on screen.

Oh well.

I hope to never work with any of these guys
larsgjestang24 May 2022
If I mute it is watchable at times, just to see some of the interesting parts. But two things that I am stuck with after a few episodes:
  • Never hire any of these guys except for reality shows
  • Film team/producer: you probably didnt have much to work with at the start, but wow you made it worse...

The red zone existed perhaps
johnnyd-525521 November 2022
The way I read it was that they never had a claim on red zone and the geologist had a prior agreement with the government that what they found was going to be given to the government no matter what, and they / the geologist would be compensated. Who knows maybe it was real and the geologist didn't tell anybody about this agreement. It was definitely scripted without a doubt as most shows are to make it more exciting. The geologist was definitely acting really weird about the meeting with the government even at the end of the previous season. Something was definitely off. So what do you think? I also didn't like how the last season ended.

100% Scripted bs infront of a nice background
dav-968268 June 2021
Everything in this show is fake. The people that pretend to be miners are just casted reality TV actors. That everything is scripted is not even the worst part, the worst part is that the script is so bad. There is constant drama about some childish nonsense that is soon forgotten to be replaced by the next unproffessional kids fight. Also the story doesnt even make sense.

Some of the many plotholes is how in the beginning of season 2 they are very worried that somebody finds out about their "secret" spot and be faster than them. The problem is that they even say that some locals told them that there would be rubys right there. So how can there be a secret? There never was. Should we really believe that the inexperienced new guy is constantly the lucky one? In reality he is just the person that we as an audience should see ourselves in.

Though its not all bad. The basic idea is deccent and they have a nice background scenery. Onestly, just watch some documentarys about Greenland. I would raise my points up to 4 if you watch it on mute.
