And everything was going so well...
Shane318215 May 2013
Here we are! The end of season 8! A season which has raised the number of viewers for Supernatural by more than any of us expected; We've met new characters, reintroduced old ones, brought in new plot devices that have been welcomed with open arms by so many of the SPN Family. Now we are unfortunately at the end of it.

There is really not much anyone can say without giving things away, so it is our duty to tell you about the episode without really saying anything. Here goes:

As seen in the promo, Dean and Sam corner the King of Hell, Crowley, and tell him that he is the "third trial", which we learned from the previous episode (Clip Show) that this means they must 'cure' him.

Now, we already know this isn't the only thing that is going on. We are aware that the Winchester brothers are doing everything they can to close the gates of Hell, and at the same time Castiel is working with Metatron to close the gates of Heaven, which will trap all the angels inside. This part of the story between Cas and Metatron continues in this episode and before too long it jumps forward and grabs our attention, becoming the spotlight of something much different than we planned for. We'll leave it at that since I can't say anymore without giving away crucial details.

Several of our other characters play a part in Sacrifice. Our prophet, Kevin Tran, has a small part in this episode. Naomi, Crowley and Abaddon all have their stories advance as well. But which characters' stories are concluded? I'll tell you this much – not all of the plots or conflicts have been resolved / finished. So we will be seeing more of certain characters in season 9.

If you're watching the season finale of Supernatural season 8, I will assume that you have watched Supernatural before, which includes previous season finales. Let me refresh your memory on a few: Ending with a car crash (S1), going to hell (S3 + 5), purgatory (S7), and Lucifer breaking out of Hell (S4). Those are a few of the many conclusions we've had for season finales. All of them have something in common. They break your heart and/or leave you on the biggest cliffhanger. Did you really think season 8 would be ANY different? There is definitely a cliffhanger. A big one.

The characters were amazing, the pacing and build up was perfect, and the intensity and suspense had me on the edge of my seat during the last 20 minutes. If you're like me, you will keep glancing at the clock saying "there is only 5 minutes left!" and as the minutes inch closer to the conclusion you panic, and curse the writers for having this all happen NOW. Then as the credits appear, you will throw your hands up as you realise you have to wait several months in order to see what will happen next.

I have loved season 8. And I absolutely loved the conclusion. If you had asked me yesterday, I would have said my favourite conclusion was Swan Song from season 5. Now, however, I think my answer may be different. Sacrifice is, to me, one of the best conclusions we've seen in a long time.

I cannot begin to express how much I am looking forward to seeing what they will do with these new developments. I think we can look forward to a great season ahead of us.

Great finale for season 8 and a very promising season 9
dessyk16 May 2013
It was a great finale for not such a great - in my opinion- season, comparing to the previous ones... With even more questions raised in the end than the beginning , this series made it possible for us- the fans- to anticipate one more season which i m pretty sure it will be spectacular , given the fact that there are so many questions to be answered and plots to be tied together to a final conclusion, while a new circle begins , with new adventures, new characters and new roles - hopefully- for the existing characters we all loved. Nobody can predict or even begin to imagine what will happen in season 9, we all have some ideas but still...

It s really rare and in the same time amazing for a TV series to keep the viewer clueless for what comes next after 8 years.

One of the best Sam-Dean moments!!
unrivaledraj6 September 2019
Yes we all watch it for Sam and Dean, and we love them too much don't we. The whole episode is great, especially Crowley. But the best part was in the final minutes of the episode, some real emotional brotherhood love between Sam and Dean one of the best moments between them till this episode(I have watched the entire 14 season thrice), how much Sam regrets letting his brother down all his life, infact his biggest regret in his life. And how Dean is ready to watch the world burn just to save his brother, the things they do for each other, is the essence of the entire Supernatural. Love the show, love the episode!!

Supernatural -The road so far(winchester ROCKS !!!)
andriagirl78619 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
What ever I say about this episode can never fulfill it completely. I mean everything was just more then perfect here. Specially "Mark Sheppard" and " Jared Padalecki"..according to me. other then that Cass and dean was as usual good. so many thing r done with a same time like Cass and dean try to close the gate of heaven and Sam try to close the gate of hell by completing the trials. everything was done great. But i just want to share my felling about last 20 minuet. that was so amazing that I could not express by word.

Now, let's get into the moment that we've been waiting all season for— Sam and Dean to finally talk things out and lay everything on the table. It was such an emotional scene, and both Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles were incredible in it. They couldn't have been better. Speaking of performances, Padalecki has been outstanding for the entire arc with the trials as Sam has gotten worse and worse, from the moment he decided he would be the one to complete them. Ever since the beginning of the season, when Sam revealed to Dean that he didn't look for him while he was in purgatory, that he disregarded their usual deal and settled down with Amelia and the dog, something has been off about the brothers' relationship. It wasn't just Amelia that was a sore subject for them; Benny was as well. Even when they both cut ties from those they spent that year they were apart with in the middle of the season, things weren't just fixed automatically. They needed to get everything out there, and despite a conversation here and a conversation there over the course of the season, it never happened—until the finale was coming to an end and Sam was prepared to complete the trial even knowing it meant his death. We were worried that Dean's mention earlier in the episode of Sam not looking for him would be it for the season and we'd have to either wait until next season for a true brotherly heart-to-heart or we'd never get one. Instead, it all came out in one of the best scenes of the entire season (and even of the past couple of seasons as well) as Dean begged his brother not to sacrifice himself:

Dean: "I can't do it without you."

Sam: "You can barely do it with me. You think I screw up everything I try, you think I need a chaperone, remember?"

Dean: "Come on, man, that's not what I meant."

Sam: "No, it's exactly what you meant. You want to know what I confessed in there? What my greatest sin was? It was how many times I let you down. I can't do that again. What happens when you've decided I can't be trusted again? Who you going to turn next time instead of me? Another angel? Another-another vampire? Do you have any idea what it feels like to watch your brother—"

Dean: "Hold on, hold on! You seriously think that? Because none of it, none of it is true. Listen, man, I know we've had our disagreements. Okay, hell, I know I've said some junk that's set you back on your heels. But Sammy, come on, I killed Benny to save you. I'm willing to let this bastard and all the sons of bitches that killed Mom walk because of you. Don't you dare think that there is anything past or present that I would put in front of you. It has never been like that. Ever. I need you to see that. I'm begging you."

"We'll figure it out, okay? Just like we always do," Dean reassured his brother before they hugged, but then even though Sam's arms stopped glowing, he collapsed—and Castiel was no longer there to answer Dean's call. In fact, no angels were, because they were all falling as Dean got Sam outside and tried to reassure him. "I got you, little brother. You're going to be just fine." But will Sam be okay? We know that completing the trials would've killed him, but what is not completing the trials going to do?....

so can't wait for season 9...

Very satisfying

Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the best season finals of the show. Going into this season I wasn't expecting the angels to fall and it was great. I was curious about what would happen next and was looking forward to it.

I DESERVE TO BE LOVED
sarahhandberg7 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The scene with Abbadon and Crowley and the scene with Crowley and Sam were two of the best scenes in this season.

The badassness of Abbadon and the sass of Crowley is amazing and unprecedented.

Seeing this human side of Crowley was a great character arc. This changed him forever. Everything that happened afterwards with Crowley was because of this Also great acting on Marks part, the whole HBO and I deserve to be loved part is awesome

Castiel. ugh, not again
readonly-2620420 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I swear Castiel has to be the biggest idiot around. As much as he begs for understanding and for Dean to trust him, he sure as hell doesn't believe or trust Dean. If he did he wouldn't mess up so royally.

One of the best acted episodes, great final image-wraps up a strong season
CubsandCulture10 September 2020
Episode:

Ackles, Padalecki and Sheppard all turn in some very hefty acting performances in this episode. Crowley's confession is Sheppard's crowing moment in the series and the brotherly melodrama is the choicest it has been in years. The final confrontation-acting, writing, directing-is some of the most compelling material the show has done since season 5(!) and goes a long way to fully reviving the show. The episode is still a little clunky-mostly around Metatron -but the final sequence is wonderfully realized; it is one of the grandest images in the show.

Season:

average episode score: 8.3578

Top 3 episodes

1. Everybody Hates Hitler 2. Sacrifice 3. Bitten

Bottom 3

21. Heartache 22. Man's Best Friend With Benefits 23. Freaks and Geeks

Season 8 is a little better overall than season 2. It largely returns the show to the more mythos focus of the first 5 seasons and it extends the Winchester's story in interesting and compelling ways. The back end of the season can stand with the best of Season 3-5 with little difference in quality but the show is still uneven-as it was in season 6-7- and the lows are quite low here. Freaks and Geeks is a *terrible* episode and the filler, monster of the week episodes are getting more silly and strained. Season 8 ends up continuing to improve upon the good work season 7 did after the lull of season 6. But it is not a full restoration and the show has yet to return to the greatness of the golden years.

My ultimate fav episode with the greatest plot twists ever!
ImLilDark7 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I mean it's always something, they need to get rid off Lucifer of the devils of the Leviathans and even close the gates of hell, even Crowley's purifying process hit a spot, but for Metatron throwing the angles is something else and I can't wait to see what's next in this crazy trip.

Season ending for season nine.
mm-3916 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The season ending does not tie all the subplots together but creates new ones for season nine. Sam can not do his job? Castiel is double crossed and is changed? The war in heaven will go to the earth! Crowely is left hanging. I was disappointing wanted some conclusions after watching the entire season. The audience just got more questions. I believe things are worse after after season eight. I wonder if Crowely will be working with the brothers now? I wonder if Castiel and Sam will not be able to contribute most of season nine? Will other bad guys come back? A well made episode. The acting and directing were great. However, the finale leaves the viewer hanging. I wish there was more for the episode. I give Sacrifice an eight out of ten.

Pretty Good
danajs246 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I write these reviews for all of the shows I watch now, but Supernatural is on a whole different scale from the other shows, so don't get me wrong when I say pretty good and put down a 9. The finale was good, but a bit of a let down from the Winchester's side, as I really wanted the demons to be locked up, and didn't want Sam's sad sap poor health to be all for naught. The casting of the angels from heaven should be interesting, but unfortunately this will be the entirety of the next season I believe, which means we'll be seeing quite a bit of Metatron, which sucks, as that actor is annoying (which is probably the point). Crowley might be forever changed by the injection of Sam's blood, which may be either good or bad, unknown at the moment. Also, the amount of blood he got from Sam's arm was a bit unrealistic.

Understanding the Enigma of Angels and Demons
sujay-sharma00618 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
So this season started off with the note of sealing the demons away forever. It involved a lot of random episodes , some quite unrelated though yet was action packed. Niomi as an angel was quite an enigma , was she the vamp of heaven or the blessing upon mankind ? And then we had much of the humorous and playful Crowley . The concept of the obscure chamber by the Nazi's was quite amusing , and this episode makes it seem even more effulgent . The Scribe seemed less religious than one would expect , so here again the fiction series gives a unique perception of the angel . This episode seemed quite thrilling from the start , but as expected this time again Sam seemed to have chose life over sealing the hell gate . However it was abysmal to note that with the fall of the angels , and the hell gate opened , now it seems like the new season ahead would require the assistance of Sam and Dean once again to gank demons ,just that the angels would probably seek the assistance of the humans rather here .Though the season seemed at some point of time out of context and monotonous , this episode does give the thrill and curiosity of the upcoming one , and indeed it wouldn't be wrong to envisage that the next supernatural season could probably be the last . .

Angels and demons
shwetafabm27 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The ep was engagaing but i was a tad annoyed at the dumbing down of Crowley and Abaddon, well it is what it is, a constant problem of the show and genre itself The Angel thing was suspicious and again we get Castiel doung something stupid As for Dean and Sam, they had one of the best brotherly moments the show has had but...i would maybe swallow that Sam didn't do it if it meant he went to hell as the gatekeeper or something, just dying is something these people expose themselves to daily, go on suicide missions constantly, i am just not buying this man who went to hell with Lucifer for eternity would be ok with this, as for Dean i was never able to swallow that he lets Sam go to hell so while this is more in character for me it's just not high enough stakes.

S8 review 8/10 After a pretty slow paced and Dean and Sam centered season with a b*tchy Amy drama and underwhelming monsters but a good take on loss, trauma and capitalism and high stakes of slaughterhouse nation we get S8 that started out well enough and was about the tablets, trials and purgatory and the boys and Benny and Amelia drama and was more fast paced in its main plot with more angel plot than before. It was pretty simple in its plot and felt different than 1-7 because it did not revolve around the boys being under control of someone or a big disaster looming (ofcourse a big disaster happened but it wasn't the brothers doing and it wasn't the main plot). In that sense it seemed different to me because it was just about a quest, sort of like in S5 when they had to get the rings. The biggest difference was Dean, in the earlier seasons we have really seen spn from the eyes of Dean, we love seeing underdogs suffer and be completely hopeless and without power and control win, that's what happened in 4-7 (6 not so much but still they had very little power and were controlled by Crowley for the most part then against Cas), so 8 was following this theme perhaps with Cas who gets controlled by an angel and starts something big. I generally forget about Cas, i think the character's arch is too messy. Sam still had the typical what us wrong with Sam but just in the last season we saw him be sick like and almost die. While we don't exactly know what is going to happen to him, it seems rather obvious, there isn't really a mystery around it. The season has pretty low stakes.

I enjoyed S8 in the beginning, it felt better and lighter than 7 but strangely it fizzled out in between due to standalone episodes that had minor episode characters in the centre then picked up the pace in its main plotline which by the end had too many plotholes, dumbed down characters and that strange strange demon cure.

Things that happened 1. Standalones I'm not sure why but this season i think had the most standalones that focused on minor characters, not like Bobby and Cass in S6 who are major characters, but like Charlie's in S7 and that repo man episode, all of these i liked. S8 had 'bitten' that barely had any Sam and Dean in it, i loved that episode, i was thoroughly engaged and its not spn but spn isn't always spn, they had 'ghostfasers' in S3 which is one of my faves and was focused on other characters and found footage but had much more involvement of the brothers than bitten. There were 2 charlie eps and i loved them because i care for the character and there is a bond between her and Dean. Then there was that titan ep, ok ep didn't care much, that 3 kid hunters ep, ok but i just didn't care about them even if we saw that girl before and the story made no sense, then that cop witch and that dog... I just didn't care, its very hard to make people care in such a short runtime, i like that they tried, they have had great eps which focused on minor episodic characters its just that these 3 being so close together was a huge turnoff. I am rewatching this and i remembered like 1-3% from these 3 episodes and that they kinda sucked and i had to watch them in fast forward to get through it, it's not like they were terrible but the closeness just made me want to not watch more and this i think is where i stopped watching spn religiously, i watched some eps of S9 and then i didn't want to watch more, also cuz i knew dean turns into a demon and that was just ridiculous to me but i think these eps played a huge part in it.

2. Purgatory I liked the whole purgatory is a secret thing... Apparently noone knows where it is and what happens when one dies in purgatory, my theory is that they go to hell or heaven like regular souls but Cass raises this question too so the angels like we are told in S6 don't know Then... Um is the Secret out or something, because the rogue reaper knew, did Crowley also torture repears then? Possibly. Now it could have happened and we were just not shown. Angels rescued Cass so could be some specific angels knew.

3. Benny I liked Benny. I liked his episodes even if a bit cheesy. I liked his relationship with Dean and Sam's view of him. I think his resolution was pretty great, i just liked that twist. They show him as having a supernatural addiction and it kinda does play like Sam with the demon blood.

4. Amelia and ugh Lisa and Ben I liked Sam's and Amelia's relationship, i thought it was boring and i probably would not like seeing any more of it but i liked seeing Sam have normalcy. But...um why, why are the writers trying to even convince us that Sam thinks he can have a normal life, though his chances are better than of Dean's and Lisa's because its not in the books by Carver and he has gone off the map, it's too naive a thing and even more naive halfway through when he has to make his choice, he has no choice, he can not stay at a permanent residence. Why are the writers forgetting about Lisa and Ben, i get that Dean wants to not even acknowledge that time period but why exactly is Crowley killing people they saved and not kidnapping these people who are completely defenseless? It's a stupid loose end. And i think the answer is Ben, this show doesn't want to kill a kid or have the kid tied down to the brothers so they are just going to pretend it didn't happen.

5. Charlie I liked her S7 ep and seeing her again for 2 eps.

6. Kevin Nice addition and i care about the character. Kevin in that ep with Crowley and fake Sam and Dean was great.

7. Dean's character development? Idek Dean comes back and we see he has ptsd or something cuz he is just being a d*ck. Understandable in some aspects, he feels betrayed and all but then halway through he wants Sam to have a normal life berating him about it for half a season. Sam was alone and thought they were dead, understandable tho i guess if he was looking he would go after Crowley or a demon... They did know Dean was in purgatory as Kevin's gf demon tells him he is back... Then after more berating even in the last episode also why is "lost your soul" included in it...he says he does not want him to die to seal hell Also he trusted Benny and maybe has a better view of monsters that he did have because in 2.03 he let the vamp go in "heart" he understood the werewolf thing is a tragedy so after the Amy thing maybe he is better in his bigotry. Also could be he turned into a vamp in S6 so could relate. He is the worst as normal Dean without the Moc in S8, in the second ep he doesn't care at all about Kevin's mom selling her soul, calling it a win. The sweetest we see him in the season is with Benny. And this is a huge change in the character and then they did the moc. Pre-hell Dean was an innocent dumbo, the show didn't go too much into his hell trauma which was good, such a hevy topic was cringey whenever shown, but Purgatory Dean was way worse, he was like moc Dean almost and Dean's sweet stupid vulnerable character is what made the show, not a Mary Sue that can easily kill anything with minimal fear.

8. Sam Sam isn't as fun when what's wrong with him isn't some evil thing. He has been pretty boring, missing his sass too, he just is sad all the time or tortured. The Amelia thing has given him hope...again he should know better, he can't have a permanent residence. He wants that life and that's why he wants to live... It just is not realistic even for the character. He still feels guilty and unclean but much less than before. I didn't think his giving up in the beginning was ooc i think it made sense, he has always wanted out.

9. Cas I love Cas but i don't care much for his storyline, it's a repeat of him screwing things up.

10. Naomi I was indifferent, i like Amanda Tapping from sg-1 the character isn't cool or too threatening, its just there

11. Meg I don't know why they emphsised so much about her going "good", i liked the one liners from her tho

Fave eps 1. Larp and the girl 2. Bitten 3. Trial and error 4. Hunteri heroici 5. Taxi driver I'm not sure but none of them were 10s for me which is why so many 9s Miss these 3 or watch another day, without them this series is a 8.5 - ep 15, 16, 18

While like any series of this kind there are stupif uneven fights and plot holes i felt S7's Cas and Meg coming back and the end of this season to be the most idk forced i guess. Not excited for the angels, i liked them till S7 because in 4 they are a wonderful mystery, 5 theya are excellent villains, 6 they are having a war and we see what we have to not much of it which is good, the mystery is good, then 7 barely had them and 8 with the Naomi thing was one thing that Angel Crowley was working with was just stupidity, even if someone was to believe that Character snapped he would not with the king of hell my God. I remember i got sick of the angels and the rest of the seasons will probably be angel heavy so here goes.
