A Soulful Tale of Love,Emotions, Pain and Tragedy
ramanniyan200820 July 2013
"Maryan" a typical movie came out this year with a very strong performance by Dhanush and Parvathy as the lead and also with A.R.Rahman's remarkable music.

Director Bharatbala who did "Jana Gana Mana" album with A.R.Rahman (an Oscar award winner) before given his first directional venture "Maryan" with some soulful love, emotions, pain and tragedy.

A real incident should be equally mixed with strong love and all commercial elements through "Maryan". But it is presented in a slow pace that creates the question "how this movie do well at box office collection?" "Maryan" plot remembers Manirathnam's "Roja" that's a major drawback of story narration by the director. Also the slow pace of the screenplay remembers the style of Manirathnam makings.

The plot is very simple and the scenes should be easily identified by the audience but through strong performance by the lead pair the movie gets more interesting towards the end. First half is packed with full of love and emotions by the lead pair. Second half is fully packed with tragedy and survival.

Dhanush (an award winning actor) has given a solid performance through the character Maryan and gives life to the movie. Definitely this year he should be the one who will give a strong competition to all other actors, those who are hungry to get the National award. As a fisherman and lover in the first half he shows all his skill of acting and as a hostage in the second half he is simply outstanding and brilliant. He goes to his next level of acting abilities through the second half. Especially in sequences like telephone speaking, just before Kadal Rasa song and at the climax portion. He should be appreciated for choosing movies like this after got an award. None of the actor can do this Maryan character except him. Hat's off to him.

Parvathy(who did "Poo" before)did an equally excellent role as Panimalar. She looks very beautiful in the movie and acted very excellent also gives a tough acting competition to Dhanush. One of the rare actresses who plays equal role to hero after a long time in Tamil cinema industry.

Other supporting characters should equally given their best acting. Especially Uma Riaz, Appukutty and Jagan did their job good.

The great plus of the movie is A.R.Rahman's music. Songs are already in chart-busters. All songs are done with beautiful emotions. "Enga Pona Rasa", "Netru Aval Irundaal", "Innum Konjam Neram" are the sweetest melodies "Kadal Rasa", "Nenje Ezhu" are packed with soul and emotions. "Sonapariya" gives the joyful pleasure. BG score also given more support to the movie. Especially in second half A.R did an excellent BG work.

Cinematography by Marc Koninckx is very valuable and shows technically brilliant in many sequences. Scenes like Dhanush waiting inside the sea and desert regions are brilliantly photographed by him. Editing by Vivek Harshan gives equal support for the movie.

Overall "Maryan" is a typical Tamil cinema and it should be appreciated for brilliant performance by Dhanush and Parvathy as the lead and for A.R.Rahman's best music.

Go and watch it for Dhanush and A.R.Rahman.

Maryan Mindblowing Masterpiece
spydon1022 July 2013
Reviews and criticism from people of poor ability and patience to watch some beauty in the screen always kept the real value of movies from south India away from reality making.

Every Year there is a surprise movie in Tamil Film Industry listing that stands top of the table ,for this year undoubtedly its Maryan on top 3.

Director Bharath Bala for his first movie but with years of experience in the industry has slowly crafted his vision on a simple script to a poetic screenplay with the support of the best cast. An emotional tale of love ,Pain, struggle so well delivered by the artist the best in south Dhanush,Parvathy in specific.

Cinematography Marc Koninckx is so brilliant and framed the best colors in both the countries and that never makes you feel the movie slow in second half supported by Vivek Harshan's cuts, just watch and admire.

AR Rahman "FASCINATING".

Keep the Spirits of Tamil movies UP

Slow yet powerful...Truly a Master Piece...
SivakumarBalachandran14 August 2013
Mariyaan comes as a serious drama thriller with a strong and soulful love story on the backdrop. The story claims that it is loosely based on the true story about three immigrant oil workers who were kidnapped by the terrorists in Sudan back in 2008.

Let's first start with the back bone of the movie that is the plot it is about two things in life 1.Love and 2.Survival of the fittest. As the two contrasting things the films also opens like two parts one love and coastal life near Kanyakumari and the other is survival life in Sudan. These tracks travel side by side in the film and finally we see the actual soulful merge.

The cinematography by the renowned Belgian Marc Koninckx brings life on the two contrasting terrains of the story 1.Coastal region of southern Tamil Nadu 2.Desserts of Sudan,Africa. His cinematography is simply brilliant which gives life to the story.

The lead actors of the movie rather the pillars of the story were Parvathy and Dhanush. They both have done a scintillating performance. They were brilliant and competing each other. Particularly the lady lead Parvathy Menon of the movie "Poo" fame didn't allow the lead male character Mariyaan to overshadow her skills at any place making us say superb acting. Dhanush is becoming an iconic and most important actor in Indian film industry. He is in the right track and has used this opportunity to grab the next national Award. Other actors Jagan and Appukutty as friends did their parts well. The little odd on characterization was the heroine's father and the hero's mother it was too artificial to look young people with older getup instead they could have given it to some good old character artists in the industry.

Director Bharath Bala is joining hands with ARR after vande matram their duo has worked well and has created the necessary magic through music on screen. As per the songs I felt it good along with the movie rather as an individual album.

Worth mention would be the hallucination scene which brought Cheetah on screen and the underwater sequences were marvelous.

The film's length could have been little less but that does not stop me saying this is a good masterpiece in Tamil cinema.

Verdict: A worth watch movie for real story and acting based movie lovers. Otherwise commercial movie lovers stay away from this flick!!

Dhanush + Bala = MAGIC
midhilvijay27 July 2013
People usually sit back and relax or even take a break during the songs in a film, but it wasn't the same with Maryan. Audiences didn't move from their seats because even the songs had a story to tell.

Maryan, inspired by true events, is the story of an Indian held captive in Sudan. It featured Dhanush and Parvathy Menon in the lead roles.

Dhanush was definitely an attraction. But the credit can't be handed over to him completely because Parvathy was equally powerful in her role and even the story managed to impress.

Dhanush and Parvathy breathe life into the story.

The cinematography done in this movie is excellent. It's a visual treat for the audience.

Dhanush + Bala = MAGIC

Maryan - A breathtaking visual & aural experience that is let down by a rather slow, disjointed and overall weak screenplay
pk_nayar22 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
First off, without a shadow of a doubt, I'm going on the record and saying that Dhanush is the best actor of his generation bar none. This film further highlights his acting prowess (which we, the Tamil film audience have grown accustomed to) that began with 'Kadhal Kondein' and continued with superlative performances in 'Pudhupettai', 'Polladhavan', 'Aadukalam', 'Mayakkam Enna', '3' & the recently released 'Raanjhanaa'.

He carries this film on his fragile shoulders through scenes of joy, love, hate, anger, despair & helplessness. We laugh with him during his fun times and we anguish with him when he suffers.

The story itself had the potential to be superb (it being based on a true event that saw four Indian oil platform workers abducted and held for ransom in North Africa), however Bharat Bala did not do justice with his extremely weak screenplay.

This is his Indian feature film debut (having previously directed a short film, a documentary, a foreign film & a few ads and music videos) and it is glaringly evident that he has a long way to go. His screenplay fails to sustain the viewers attention, to be honest if not for the lead pair, many would not have watched till the end. The pace is extremely slow, which is fine if the scenes are not disjointed, however it feels like there one too many unnecessary scenes. The African villains were poorly conceived as neither were their motives explained nor were they engaging. They were basically cut board cutouts of continental African caricatures. 'Kadal Rasaa' song felt out of place, the idea was great but could have been explored differently. The notion that a fisherman is at his strongest only in his element, the sea, is fantastic and proves to be the plus point in the climax.

The lead pair has performed excellently, their chemistry is very prominent. The slow build up of their love is refreshing and funny. Parvathy Menon's acting deserves praise, and she looks great as a village belle. Dhanush really tugs at your heartstrings in certain scenes especially the second half when he is a hostage. That phone call scene will leave you reeling. You will know what I mean when you watch it, I wouldn't want to spoil too much.

The rest of the cast have been grossly underused except for Jagan & Appukutty. It is a shame to see Salim Kumar's talents wasted as the father of Parvathy's character. After all, he also won the National Award for Best Actor for his heart wrenching performance in 2010 Malayalam film 'Adaminte Makan Abu' (incidentally he was a joint winner with Dhanush that year).

A.R. Rahman was at his ethereal best as both his songs & background score was pure aural ecstasy. Although all the songs were great, the best was saved for last, as 'Nenjae Ezhu' coupled with an amazing visual spectacle could not be topped by the rest of the songs.

A big kudos to Mark Koninckx, a Belgian who is pretty well known in his country but whose only previous claim to international fame was the unheralded 2008 Franco-Liberian film 'Johnny Mad Dog'. His framing and angles were evocative. Be it the fishing hamlet that is beautifully hugged by the blue sea or the harsh dry dessert that is both arid & stunning to look at.

On the surface of it all, this is just a love story that could have been brilliant if it had been supplemented by a better plot twist.

I give it 7/10, mainly for the lead pair's performance which was complimented superbly by Rahman's magical tunes & Koninckx's visual feast

Maryan is filled with lot of emotion, pain, struggle and heart wrenching love... Only Dhanush can do this type of role, with his impressing expressions, lovely smile, heart touching emotional scenes, his Hardwork shows in each and every frame, sure another national award is waiting for him.Although the first half will be slow that didn't damage the plot its going very well with cast.Parvathy Wow really stupendous performance from her, cute and beautiful Paru impresses so much.Second half no words to express truly realistic Mindblowing.Cinematography by Marc is major highlight of the movie his powerful lens captures the locations very well, kudos to him also.Editing by Vivek Harshan is sharp doesn't spoil the movie, Bharat Bala came up with an emotional tale of love,he takes Tamil cinema to next level. Last but not least A.R.RAHMAN is there any word to praise him more, songs are very emotional and Marvellous, his terrific Bgm carries the movie as soul to the end.Movie is technically brilliant

Maryan-Dhanush and A.R.RAHMAN steals the show.

Good Movie from Bharat Bala
tgintouch22 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A good movie in this year. Most expected films in this year fails to entertain the viewers including famous directors who gave awesome movies previously. But Bharat Bala handled a different story and the way he delivered is pretty good.

From trailer itself we can predict what is the story based on. But the way he handled the story very much appreciable. Although everything went good love part seems very familiar with most of the movies. If he think something different in that the movie will be much better as my opinion. The screenplay was very good. Although the story is predicted in second half of the movie very thrilling.

Every song was very nice, in that "Kadal rasa nan" song was awesome, and the voice yuvan is very nice. ARRs BGM was very superb. Dhanush and parvathy did their role very nice. This movie will be milestone for Dhanush.

A Indian fisherman stuck in a desert captured by Sudanese terrorists trying to survive
niron-nick19 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Mariyaan........what to say? a very different film even in an international style,to be honest it is too different for the Indian audience, how they will receive? it is a totally different question, to the movie - this is the only Indian film that could surpass Raavanan's Cameraworks and Musical Ambiance, The Desert and the sea are important characters of the film, the camera makes sure to give proper space to these characters, and the music is as slow as the film and as fast as Danush can go.It's nice to watch deeply drawn characters like in a Bala film .The director has paid attention to beautiful details.Danush......barefoot scuba encountering cheetahs and chewing straw and ultimately that look of untainted pain in his eyes ,he has done the best he can do.Parvathi Menon the seashore Damsel, the girlfriend worth pining for ,the brave and bold girl worth marrying ,the true woman who would fight a man when he tries to harm her,she satisfies all these roles pretty much. Appukutti is excellent as well....but the director pays too much attention to details, and he tries to add too many things which make the first half quite slow, the second half is ultra realistic it is like looking into a real incident. But beyond all Mariyaan the film in Tamil Cinema is like Mariyaan in the the Sudanese desert I keep hoping that they see the shore........

STRENGTHS :- * Nenje Song : sung by AR ..... * Background Score : is awesome from Start till End..... * Camera : by Marc was great especially in songs ..... * Lyrics and Songs : have some good theme of Love .....

WEAKNESSES :- * Africa portion : was little boring ...... * First half : was common nothing much new in it .....

This movie is inspired from a newspaper article of a real-life crisis event, where three oil workers from India were kidnapped and taken hostage in Sudan by mercenaries. The film is an emotional journey of a common man to an unknown place with the hope to come home and lead a better life. Dhanush, Parvathi Menon.

Sum, less than parts!
rajrajnister10 August 2013
Mariyaan, which means immortal, is the about a fisherman and his love Panimalar.

The film is supposedly a fictionalized account of a true incident but buckles under the strain of a good screenplay. However it seems that an all out effort was made to prop it up with the support of the other departments but in my opinion, not very successfully.

Dhanush has done justice to his role as Mariyaan. One has seen him in such roles before and has surely seen better performances by him e.g., his much deserved National award for 'Aadukulam'. Parvathy as Panimalar is adequate. The cinematography cannot do what the script fails to do, but if shooting the sea in its majesty and its serenity, the underwater scenes, the barren sunbaked desert and wind blown sand dunes takes special talent and skills, Marc Koninckx certainly exhibits them.

There was a time when A.R. Rahman's music in a film used to bestow on a it a distinct aura which brought out the essence of that particular film. It was like adding that one magic ingredient to the recipe to make it what it is supposed to be. That quality has been lacking in Mariyaan, though individually some of the songs are very good, especially I liked the very melodious "Innum Konjam Neram". Nothing exceptional about the BG work in this movie.

Bharatbala's direction is competent but with all the resources that he had, he could have done a little better.

With all the star power the movie has it may prove to be a blockbuster, but as far as being worth the 2 hours and 30 minutes on my time, I felt was a let down.

Awesome Movie, Bad Audience
ryandaniyaal25 July 2013
Mariyaan is just-around-picture-perfect right from title to credits. {IMDB – 8.4 (singam – 5.9, 3 idiots – 8.3, batman begins – 8.3)}. The movie has four amazing elements that make it a visual treat: Parvathi, Mark, Dhanush and Rahman (in that order). Parvathi has put out a stellar performance. It is only a pity that much of the limelight is given only to the hero. Whether it is romance or her yearning for mariyaan's return, she has captured the emotions well and transferred it to the viewer. Secondly Mark has done a phenomenal work with his camera. The rolling scene in the desert and the scene under water with water on the lens are too good. A regular Tamil viewer will not notice the intricacies of the shots but a careful watch of Nenjae Ezhu will show some exquisite shots with panimalar's hair and water. Dhanush has canned out yet another good performance. Though the first half is more of a regulation character, the sufferings in the second half are well portrayed. The phone call scene and the imaginary treat stand out. Rahman, of course can simply not produce less-than-extraordinary music. Enga pona raasa, as I had said in my audio review, is simply the best in the album and he has used it widely in his background score. Uma Riyaz, Appukutty, Jagan and Annachi have done their roles perfectly. The only flaw in the movie is the editing and if some unwanted scenes had been trimmed, it would have been great. As far as the slow-screenplay is concerned, I think it suited the movie perfectly. The hallucinations are an awesome part of the movie. My final verdict is that it is a movie beyond Kollywood. PS: Just like all films where the heroine follows the hero (NEP etc.), this will not be acceptable to the local lads. Moreover, Tamil audience (in general) have no sense of appreciating art and hence they laugh (like idiots) when Dhanush speaks on the phone, when he calls out Aathaa in the climax, when Jagan looks into a mirror and the leopard scene. Bharath Bala deserves credit for the performances he has extracted, the story and for casting Parvathi.

A man in love temporarily sacrifices his great lifestyle to save his lover. but, at the end of his sacrifice he faces an unexpected biggest hurdle to meet his lover.
mailtodhina0076 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
1.Too much dragging on the love scenes rather than the hero's portrayal or his great escape.

2.especially the scene "when the heroine expressed perfect happiness on learning the hero's return while she was assaulted by the moneylender" was quite annoying and unacceptable.

3.love story is not at all new to Tamil audiences. so, obviously from the trailer we expected more on "fisherman hunting a giant fish" and "the hero's escape from the revolutionists in the desert"

4.in my point of view, the major flaw of this movie is the wrong priorities on different scenes.

5.still the movie is a good attempt on bringing in fresh plots to the Tamil cinema.

What was Dhanush thinking?
vinay_payyapilly9 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Maryan turned out to be a total dud. The entire theatre kept groaning and moaning audibly through the movie.

The movie tells of a small town boy who decides to go to Sudan on a lucrative contract to help his future father-in-law escape a debt. In typical style, the first half of the movie introduces us to the protagonist and peripheral characters. It is light and filled with fun. The second half takes us to Sudan where the hero falls in the clutches of a band of kidnappers.

While the story looks compelling on paper, BharatBala should have left it alone. There is just too much advertisement like styling that it takes away rather than adds to the telling of what should essentially be a gritty story. That Bharat Bala doesn't have a clue about story telling is seen in the second half where only token scenes show us how someone might have survived in the hot desert. Instead, we are treated to scene after scene of Dhanush stumbling through the desert while thinking of his love back home. Groan!

Give it a miss. Go watch Ranjanhaa once more. Or maybe Aadukalam.

Pain, Fall, Arise
glitzz9721 July 2013
This film is, was and will always be amazing. It was an amazing experience from director Bharatbala, Oscar-winning A.R. Rahman, and of course National award winning actor Dhanush. Firstly, the film had the best cinematography ever, kudos to the Belgian film maker, Marc Koninckx. The music was of course, breath-taking, no doubt about that. The story was simple and perfect to fit the 'hope' theme promised. Every actor in this movie has obviously given their best, mainly actor Dhanush. The first half of the film reveals his origins as a fisherman, while the second half is mainly in Africa, depicting his working life there. Every frame of this film has been shot with meaning and realism. This movie, in my opinion, has surpassed many Hollywood films in many ways. Overall, Maryan is an amazing masterpiece and is highly recommended for 'A' class audiences only.

Warning: Spoilers
The screenplay may be slow but when you get into the story you don't even notice that. Musuc and BGM score was excellent and the climax of this movie was awesome😍. The climax is mariyaan who lives like a king of the ocean got kidnapped by the gang in desert. When the mariyaan get into the ocean he got energy, power and kill the gang leader who kidnapped him. That scene tells us a king is always a king in his kingdom.

Great!
yashmishra9122 July 2013
One of the best Tamil "genuine entertaining" films till date where the famous music video and ad film director Bharat Bala paints a beautiful scenario of a man who fights against all odds and gets himself saved from the shackles of initially the local villain in Tamil Nadu and then the local militia in Sudan. The film is a well crafted and brilliant narration laden film, which scores full points in the screenplay (Bharat and Sriram Rajan), the characters whose presence make the frames complete with their excellent performances. A word about A.R. Rahman's music score: REFRESHING. He hits with a large bang in giving the film a great music score which graces the film, continuing his excellence this year from Kadal and Raanjhanaa. A word about the cinematography: BRILLIANT. Marc Konnikx, AFC, turns every frame of the film into an outstanding piece of art, which makes your jaw drop. The editing by Vivek Harshan is slick and brilliant and the the Sound Design and DI work is again brilliant. Performances by Salim Kumar, Jagan, Uma Riyaz Khan and Dagbeth Tweh are brilliant. Parvathy Menon is beautiful and adorable in the film in her performances and beauty as well. Dhanush is EXCELLENT, who returns with his charms that he displayed in films like "Aadukulam", "Mayakkam Enna" and the recent cult "Raanjhanaa". The great and smooth narration flow makes "Maryan" a great weekend fare. A must watch even more a Non Tamil as the film has been released with English subtitles. My rating would be 4. 5/ 5.

Brilliant acting by leads, the rest doesn't hit the right note
nadineazalea2 August 2016
I wanted to like this movie. I watched it on account of glowing reviews that gave special mention to the actors' performances. That aspect, that of the leads at least, without doubt deserves praise - they acted brilliantly, and as a new-comer to Dhanush's films I too see clearly how talented of an actor he is.

Which makes it more of a pity that the movie overall failed to connect. It impressed alright, but movies with cliché plots and lower production value have left me feeling more than I did at the end of Maryan. I quote an older review, from the Times of India, "for a man who gives logical replies to his friends about why he does not want to fall in love, Maryan's change of heart is a bit too quick and unconvincing." Exactly. Pani's love keeps Maryan alive, but to me at least, the development of that powerful relationship didn't come through nearly enough! How come he started loving her all of a sudden? Was it triggered by simple guilt? Had he been suppressing his love all this time? If so, how are we to know? The story ultimately fails in that it is a story of a powerful love, but doesn't take enough time to let the audience understand why said love is so intensely felt. A character said in the movie that Pani had for a long time been "obsessed" with Maryan, and indeed she seems so in the beginning. Unfortunately, so she seems also in the end. Why does she love Maryan? I actually don't know. (Especially given the many character flaws he reveals..)

Secondly, while there are a few memorable tracks that fit the moment well, many times in the movie I was stunned by how out-of-place the music seemed. Maryan is desperate at the hands of his kidnappers, and suddenly some upbeat track starts. If scenes were affecting me, well the beat threw that out as soon as it started. This was AR Rahman? I don't understand!

Much kudos for providing a strong female lead. Perhaps a second watching will allow some links to click and empathy to grow. However, for now it remains an artsy movie that tried.

To be honest, if I dwell any longer on this, the more likely I am to partially rescind my praise and deign Parvati's acting 'very good' instead of 'brilliant'. Reviewers I admire, did we watch the same movie??

MARYAN dhanush...
revanthronalz22 July 2013
maryan is an ossom movie ,, though am an AJITH fan i really liked dhanush in this movie ,,, romance ,story,,, very good movie.. nitially set to release on 31 May 2013,[39] due to post-production and re- recording works, the release date was changed to 21 June 2013. There was a scarcity of scrutiny theaters for the certification process so, the film was censored on 17 June 2013.[40]The film was certified with U/A certificate for its theme and some violence in the climax. However, it was re-censored to exempt itself from entertainment tax and hence, was given a U certificate.[41]The release date of June 21, 2013 was cancelled to avoid clash with Dhanush's Hindi debut film Raanjhanaa and delayed process for censoring. Finally, the makers set the release to 19 July 2013.

Songs worth only hearing..netru aval irunthal was one song which made me asleep..visuals a big plus.. bharath bala falls apart..editing was awful, and the film was too slow.HALLUCINATION should have been correctly explained to Tamil audience.death of jagan was not clear.ALL songs are good..nenje ezhu was dragged to an extent where audience wanted to go off the theater .the only scene i liked was when dhanush speaks to parvathy.Saar..Saar money Saar...underwater sequence was well shot..that was neat..

This movie has Already created a much expectation among the people as two leading music composers worked together for a song(kadal rasaa naan). Finally it fulfilled all our expectations. All the people who appeared on the screen had done their job well.Actor Danush ,once again he proved himself a good actor.Director Barath Bala,I saw him when he was coming out of the kamala theatre. He is so simple,I didn't care about him but after watching the movie i thought that I missed to take a photo with him. After the interval,Few scenes shot on Africa impressed me a lot. While watching those scenes it takes you there and makes you to think what you will do when you are under such situation, and it's the place where Danush scores high.when you are planning to go for a movie this is a right choice, get the snacks sit back and relax and if you want enjoy it in AURO 3D.

The movie was very bad. Nothing was good in the movie. There is no interesting part in the movie. Boring movie. The movie has many logic mistakes.

Well set for a superb love story...

1st half is slow and makes the base for the love between Dhanush and Parvathy Menon..

2nd half is rocking with Dhanush's mind blowing performance..

But throughout the film A R Rahman is clearly the hero of the film alongside Dhanush..

Camera work and Cinematography also certainly to be remembered...

Parvathy Menon has come from nowhere for this film.. good performance from her..

Go for it if you are in true love and for all music lovers...

Maryan(Immortal) - A story of Love, Hope & Survival

Maryan(Immortal) - A story of Love, Hope & Survival.Loved every bit of it & here is why.

Well at the first place, Maryan is not for you if you are expecting a fast paced screen play(especially the first half). The trailer of the movie is quite misleading in portraying it as an adventurous journey. Its a story of how a hero survives and fights an impossible journey back home not by fists but just by hope.So a story of survival cant be action packed, fast paced, mushy & hence its a little demanding on the viewers with its slow pace.

Bharat Bala the story writer, the man behind screen play & direction has done tremendous justice to his script ( a simple one).

In the introduction scene, Dhanush, the fisherman in a village proves his heroics not by doing some mass action scenes, but his aim is to catch the all difficult tiger fish which no one has done before other than his father some 20 years back if I am right. This heroism is so justifiable as we all prove to be heroes in our profession or by doing things which we are good at but difficult & which need not always be fist pumping & thrashing bad guys :- )First marks to that.

As his love life unfolds, kudos to Parvathy Menon for being the soul of the movie he has to take the decision of leaving his dear profession of fishing (Remember Maryan is called Kadalraasa - The man made for the seas) & work for a Sudan oil company to get his lady love.

After two years he get his chance to come back home to get the hand of his lady love. The scenes on his longings to see her are so well made. Now our hero is caught by some baddies in Africa & he has to make a herculean effort to run away from them. This is the story.

The first half is all about the romance between Maryan & Pani. Its slow but its engrossing. After a long time its really nice to see some meaningful real life romance in Tamil cinema.A romantic heroine need not have some sexy dance moves & some glamorous dress to prove a point. If Dhanush is as swift as the ocean , Parvathy alias Pani is so earthy & real.Good marks to the director for his faith on the soul of the movie , Pani is a true embodiment of love. I was simply floored by Parvathy Menon's performance.Great job from her.

Even though , Dhanush the ocean is swift outside(first half), remember oceans are deeper & more you go down its calmer & heavier. The second half is this journey of hope. The scenes based in Africa are new to Tamil cinema & hence exciting. There is one scene in which the hero escapes from the baddies den at night by killing one of them swiftly. And thank god he does not take the baddie's gun & starts fighting like a mass action hero.If that would have happened I would have been very disappointed instead he just chooses to run.Now running in a desert & surviving without food is only possible but just by hope. Its hope to meet her lady love & the second journey of hope is well made. The scene in which he calls his lady love over phone instead of his company is very touching .Loved the glint in his eyes when he see his mother i.e the sea towards the climax fight scene he now knows the ball is in his court.

If you would ask me who is a good actor, I would say any actor who can withstand a close up shot of 30 secs.Dhanush never disappoints you.His love, will & conviction can be easily felt. The intensity which he shows in the close frame shots are just incredible. Mass heroes join for a tuition class of Dhanush.( No I must not compare, its not worth it

Surely you will be enchanted by the cinematography of Belgian, Marc Koninckx. Thanks to the nice location. My favourite is the cliff near the waters where few romantic scenes are set. The shots in sea front, sea shores, in the African desert are simply fantastic. My favourite is the shot of moon from the bottom of a well. Its simply fantastic. You would see the moon reflection in Dhanush's dark eyes.Just wow.And the close up shots of the heroine, so beautiful & romantic.

The slow pace in first half gets a breather from the soul stirring music of A.R Rahman. My favourite is Enga Pona Raasa. In the second half "Nenje Ezhu" is so inspiring & so apt for the scene.

And the whole credit for the movie must go to its creator "Bharat Bala".Thanks for giving nice & real romance to Tamil cinema.

Every attempt made by movie makers like Bharat Bala in this & actors like Dhanush, Vijay Sethupathi will take Tamil cinema one step ahead. But the sad reality is the mass heroes , movie makers brings Tamil cinema behind by 3 steps. So we should encourage such good attempts to film making. And for god-sake do not classify this as an art movie. It is a commercial movie & commercial movie need not always have stupid mass appeal. They can be made believable & more importantly with some logic ( a little would do)

Go & dive in Maryan & see the ocean's depth for yourself. Its worth it.I have already planned for the second dive
