During the same interview where he defended the Warner Bros. awards season flop “Joker: Folie a Deux,” Oscar-winning director Quentin Tarantino also expressed a strong disinterest in the studio’s top contender, “Dune: Part Two.”
Speaking to Bret Easton Ellis during an interview with Ellis for the writer’s podcast, Tarantino said he had already watched “Dune” adapted for the screen by David Lynch.
“I don’t need to see that story again,” Tarantino said when asked about Denis Villeneuve’s screen adaptations of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction novel. “I don’t need to see spice worms. I don’t need to see a movie that says the word ‘Spice’ so dramatically.”
The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” director added that Hollywood’s reliance on reboots and remakes was not something he found interesting as an audience member.

Quentin Tarantino has not seen Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies and has no intention of changing that, despite the rave reviews. During an interview on “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast” (the same interview where Tarantino defended “Joker: Folie à Deux”), the filmmaker was asked about whether or not “Dune: Part Two” was the best movie of the year as many have proclaimed. He didn’t have an answer because he’s not going to watch it.
“I saw [David Lynch’s] ‘Dune’ a couple of times. I don’t need to see that story again,” Tarantino said about his lack of interest in Villeneuve’s adaptations. “I don’t need to see spice worms. I don’t need to see a movie that says the word ‘spice’ so dramatically.”

Quentin Tarantino, best known for his supporting turn in "Destiny Turns on the Radio," has never been shy about his taste in movies. Tarantino has long been drawn to aggressively masculine genre films, Westerns, war pictures, martial arts films, and anything one might have seen at a run-down grindhouse theater in 1977. He also likes very terse, tense movies, and has listed Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver," William Friedkin's "Sorcerer," and Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" as his favorites. He's likewise admitted to having fond feelings for "The Great Escape" (who doesn't?) and thinks very highly of Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk." It's easy to guess that he similarly loves "Rio Bravo" and "Apocalypse Now," and he often recommends the Sonny Chiba vehicle "The Street Fighter" from 1974.
Despite his tastes, however, Tarantino remains cinematically omnivorous, taking in hundreds of movies a year, sussing out the pop...

Quentin Tarantino recently appeared on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, where he is sharing his hot takes on some of the more recent projects that have been released. He praised Joaquin Phoenix’s performance from Joker: Folie à Deux, saying that he gave “one of the best performances I’ve ever seen in my life.” He also said, “I really, really liked it, really. A lot. Like, tremendously, and I went to see it expecting to be impressed by the filmmaking. But I thought it was going to be an arms-length, intellectual exercise that ultimately I wouldn’t think worked like a movie, but that I would appreciate it for what it is.”
World of Reel now reports on Tarantino’s firm stance on watching movies and TV shows that have been remade from past works, including Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune films. The Pulp Fiction director explains, “I saw [nm0000186 autoDavid...

Ramping up the glitz and glamour from last year’s launch shindig, The Hollywood Reporter Japan turned on the style once more for its Trailblazer Award Gala Party, held Wednesday night at The Peninsula Hotel in Tokyo’s Ginza district.
Held during the Tokyo International Film Festival, this year’s THR Japan gala event was an even hotter ticket than in 2023, with a veritable who’s who of Japan’s film industry, as well as sprinkling of sports legends and local celebs, who all graced the red carpet to join the celebrations to honor Shogun star Tadanobu Asano, the first Japanese recipient of THR’s Trailblazer Award.
The Trailblazer Award is given to artists whose work and careers illuminate stories and characters who have been traditionally marginalized in Hollywood. Since his debut on Japanese television as a 16-year-old, Asano’s career has taken him from Hirokazu Koreeda’s Maborosi to...

The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival began its 10-day run on October 28 with a colorful Red Carpet event featuring Japanese and international cinema luminaries, ahead of the TIFF Opening Ceremony.
The Red Carpet festivities got underway with brief stage appearances by over 200 filmmakers, actors and luminaries from across sections of the festival, as well as the TIFF juries. They then moved along the 162-meter serpentine walk, stopping for multiple autographs and selfies with fans from far and wide before arriving at the elegant staircase leading into the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater. The theater was built in the style of yesteryear’s grand movie houses, providing the perfect backdrop for TIFF’s Opening Ceremony.
Among the international luminaries making the stroll were Chinese actor Zhao Liying and director Midi Z (at TIFF with the film The Unseen Sister); Hong Kong actor Michael Hui (The Last Dance); Taiwanese director Huang Xi and Hong...

Samurai stories, an essential genre of Japan’s film industry since its inception, have been enjoying a global resurgence lately.
FX and Disney’s smash-hit period series Shogun, produced by and starring veteran Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada, became the most honored drama in Emmys history last month, winning in more categories in a single year than any show in TV history. The series, a painterly period drama about the struggle for power at the dawn of Japan’s Edo period, also became Disney+ and Hulu’s globally most-watched show ever.
Despite Shogun‘s phenomenal success, however, fans — and Disney’s content execs — will have to wait quite a while for more. Shogun has been renewed for two additional seasons, but the first season was based on James Clavell’s best-selling novel from 1975, and the show’s story arc concluded right where the author’s book ends. FX and Shogun‘s...

A decades-old unproduced screenplay set during Japan’s 1868-’69 civil war has been dusted off and given thoroughly modern action-movie treatment in Kazuya Shiraishi’s “11 Rebels.” A highly entertaining and highly blood-drenched take on the trusty old tale of crooks and miscreants embarking on a military suicide mission on the promise of being pardoned should they happen to survive, “11 Rebels” has just the right balance of spectacular swordplay, revenge-fueled drama and double-crossing political intrigue.
After opening the Tokyo Film Festival, Shiraishi’s lusty samurai slash-’em-up will march into Japanese cinemas on Nov. 1. A slightly different version of the film has been acquired for North America by specialty distributor Well Go USA. Fans of FX’s smash-hit “Shogun” series should find plenty to like about this handsomely produced tale set in the dying days of feudal Japan. Tiffcom, the contents market that takes place alongside Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), had a tough ride during the pandemic, moving online in 2020 and only managing to come back as a physical event for the first time last year.
But with a new home at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center in Hamamatsucho, the market seems to be finding its feet in a crowded autumn festival season, in part thanks to the world’s renewed interest in Japanese film, TV and anime content.
With Japan-set series such as Shogun and Tokyo Vice also drawing audiences globally, and mainland China, once the big draw in the region, becoming less outward-looking, the international industry is becoming much more open to collaborating with Japan.
And the interest is reciprocated as a younger generation of Japanese filmmakers and producers are challenging long-held perceptions that their local industry is insular and slow moving. Increasingly, Japanese...

The Hollywood Reporter just released its list of the 50 most powerful TV producers in Hollywood for this, the year of our lord 2024. It's full of names you would expect, including Lauren LeFranc, the woman behind HBO's hit The Penguin; Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who probably made the best show of the year in Shōgun; and Ryan Murphy, who's scored hit after hit with shows like Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey.
Also included on the list where a trio of producers behind shows in HBO's Game of Thrones franchise: first up there's Ryan Condal, who's running the Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon. He offered some advice to his younger self: “Don’t take it so seriously. It’ll be fine. Have more fun. Enjoy the little victories. Travel. Write more specs.” And as for how he gets over writer's block?...

The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival got off to a memorably splashy start Monday night with the world premiere of filmmaker Shiraishi Kazuya’s frenetic and wildly bloody samurai action flick 11 Rebels.
In recent years, Japan’s preeminent cinema event has been attempting to revitalize and rebrand itself as a not-to-be-missed cultural occasion in the Asia-Pacific region. After years of organizational drift, the festival, under the leadership of current chairman Hiroyasu Ando, is on a mission to boost its reach and reputation into something more commensurate with the country’s powerful cinematic past and the ever-growing appeal of Japanese culture around the globe.
In that sense, 11 Rebels was perhaps the perfect pick for this year’s opening gala screening. A throw-back samurai slasher, the film is based on a decades-old screenplay by the late, great scriptwriter Kasahara Kazuo, best known for his cult classic yakuza film Battles Without Honor and Humanity...

The Tokyo International Film Festival got underway Monday, just hours after a general election delivered a reduced parliamentary mandate for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. But if Japanese voters once again demonstrated their political apathy, there are signs that Japanese audiences have maintained their appetite for the entertainment industry – and further signals that the Japanese screen industry is coping well with sector disruption.
After a strong recovery in 2023, moderate further growth of the theatrical box office is predicted for this year. One forecast put the year end total at $1.88 billion, cementing Japan as the world’s third largest cinema market.
More importantly for the overall health of the industry, local films continue to dominate. So far this year, Japanese movies account for nine of the top ten titles, headed by the $103 million-grossing “Detective Conan: The Billion Dollar Pentagram.” But what is good for Japanese producers has become a tougher market for Hollywood to penetrate.

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has implemented several new initiatives aiming to promote greater international collaboration and diversity at its 37th edition this year. Festival chair Ando Hirayasu unveiled strategic changes that expand the event’s global connections and foster discussion around gender issues in the film industry.
At the core of these changes is relocating the TIFF Lounge, the festival’s main networking hub, to the more accessible Lexus Meets venue. This move intends to facilitate meaningful interactions between Japanese and international filmmakers, according to Ando. In an interview with Variety, Ando said restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic made networking difficult, but the new venue will now enable genuine engagement.
Additionally, TIFF launched a Women’s Empowerment section built upon becoming the first Asian film festival to adopt the Collectif 50/50 gender parity pledge in 2021. Ando said this new program will showcase movies focusing on women’s accomplishments and...

The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is doubling down on global networking and gender equality initiatives, according to festival chair Ando Hiroyasu.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, various restrictions made this difficult, but we are finally able to engage in genuine networking,” Ando told Variety. The festival has relocated its TIFF Lounge, a hub for international exchange, to the more centrally located Lexus Meets venue to facilitate better interaction between Japanese and international filmmakers.
Among this year’s notable additions is a new Women’s Empowerment section. The initiative follows TIFF becoming the first Asian film festival to sign the Collectif 50/50 charter in 2021. The hunt for a successor to Disney CEO Bob Iger is heating up after the entertainment giant appointed former Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman as chairman of the Disney board this week, confirming that a new CEO would be appointed in “early 2026.”
The race as it currently stands seems to be narrowing on an executive from Disney’s creative ranks, which means the co-chairs of Disney Entertainment — Dana Walden and Alan Bergman — have the early lead. Walden, who clearly has the leading position, would be Disney’s first female CEO in its 101-year history.
An individual with knowledge of Iger’s thinking told TheWrap earlier this month that former executives Tom Staggs and Kevin Mayer are not seen as succession candidates for the top job, even after the duo returned to Disney last year as consultants with their private equity firm Candle Media. Iger has frequently stated that his successor...

The verdict is in on the CBS reboot of “Matlock.” The Tiffany network renewed the legal drama for a second season after only two episodes aired.
In making the announcement, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said, “This reconceived ‘Matlock’ was devised by Jennie Snyder Urman with a brilliant surprise plot twist, and we knew we had something very special the moment we saw the first episode brought to life by the incredibly talented Kathy Bates. The audience reception and critical acclaim for it has been overwhelming. We can’t wait to get started on a second season.”
Bates plays a society matron, Madeline Kingston, who masquerades as Madeline “Matty” Matlock to wangle a job at the law firm that she holds responsible for her daughter’s death from opioid addiction. This dual role is a meaty one for the Oscar winner and seems certain to bring her plenty more awards hardware.

Is “Shōgun” about to pull a “Succession” at the 2025 Golden Globes?
Currently at Gold Derby, the FX historical epic leads three top categories in our Golden Globe predictions: Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, and Best Drama Actress for Anna Sawai. If it also manages to pull off a fourth victory in a supporting race, it would match “Succession’s” total of four from last year.
For its final season, HBO’s family drama won the series prize at the Golden Globes and it also took home trophies for lead actors Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, plus supporting player Matthew Macfadyen.
If “Shōgun” rides off with only the three top categories for series, lead actor, and lead actress, it would still be in good company indeed, as only a handful of dramas have done so. Besides “Succession” in 2023, “The Crown” most recently accomplished this feat in 2020. Before that,...

How will “The Bear” fare at the winter awards after its surprising Emmy loss? Which new shows will break through? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are with here with their first Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards TV predictions.
Even before “Hacks” upset “The Bear” for the Best Comedy Series Emmy last month, it already felt like the “The Bear” would be vulnerable to losses at the winter awards after the less-than-ideal response to its third season. The FX series will definitely still get nominations, but will it go home empty-handed everywhere? “Hacks” is the odds-on favorite to take home its second series Globe but remains in second in the comedy ensemble odds at the SAG Awards. But maybe this is finally “Only Murders in the Building’s” chance to win a major prize?

“In Europe we are accustomed to producing with a bit less money and finding solutions,” declared Luca Bernabei as he spoke about how his Fremantle-backed production outfit Lux Vide has had to keep costs down on Jesse Williams-starrer Costiera and upcoming epic Sandokan.
Bernabei pointed to a “tricky” financial market in which American buyers are looking to Europeans for guidance on how to make shows for that little bit less.
“Europe has been doing this for a long time,” Bernabei told Deadline on the Fremantle stand at MIPCOM. “The producer has to be smart and find new ways of making shows.”
Starring John Hannah, Ed Westwick, Alanah Bloor and Can Yaman, Sandokan is a case in point. The pirate series based on the old novels by Emilio Salgari, which has been adapted several times before for the big and small screen, is yet to find a buyer, with Fremantle deficit financing.

Exclusive: It’s hard not to start at the end when talking to Soo Hugh as Season 2 of her drama series Pachinko draws to a close. The Apple TV+ show follows a Korean family across four generations and takes in both historical events and family drama as the resolute Sunja moves from her home country to Japan. The denouement of the latest season is both satisfying and leaves the audience wanting more. There is still, it feels, some story to be told.
Hugh and her writing team moved beyond the 500 or so pages of the eponymous Min Jin Lee bestseller upon which the series is based for parts of Season 2 — notably within the strand set in late-1980s Japan. Going deeper into the Pachinko story is already top of mind. “Apple has been really generous and supportive and they’ve encouraged us to start thinking about it,” says Hugh. “The...

Veteran filmmaker Robert Lantos is generating buzz at MIPCOM with his latest television series “Rise of the Raven.” Unlike many historical dramas, the production prioritizes authentic language and cultural representation.
Lantos, known for work on acclaimed movies like “Eastern Promises,” made the unusual choice to have characters speak in their native tongues rather than defaulting to English. “This story is deeply tied to specific moments in history and places,” Lantos explained. “I didn’t want all the characters using some mixed English.”
The Canada-based producer of Hungarian descent carried this dedication to precision into casting. He sought actors from the nations depicted rather than employing famous international stars. “Global celebrities tend to come from English-speaking backgrounds, rarely elsewhere,” Lantos noted. “I felt it was worth finding local talent from the real countries involved in this history.”
Lantos acknowledged challenges finding suitable performers from smaller pools. However, he believes worthwhile to generate an immersive viewing experience.

Robert Lantos wanted to avoid a Hollywood take on European history and insisted that characters in his period epic Rise of the Raven spoke in their native tongues and that talent was sourced from the countries in question.
“I’ve always shot in English, but this is a story that is so deeply rooted in a specific moment in time, specific geographic places, I didn’t want to have everybody speak some kind of a mid-Atlantic English,” the veteran film and TV producer told Deadline.
That also meant the casting pool was smaller and the team had to work harder to find its on-screen talent.
“Global stars tend to be from the English language world, with rare exceptions,” Lantos said. “I thought it was a price was worth paying that we wouldn’t have any global stars, only local ones, from the actual countries that are involved in this history,...

Sally Rooney recently stunned the entertainment world when in a newspaper interview, she said her experience of adapting her much-loved coming-of-age novel Normal People for the BBC and Hulu left her feeling like TV was “not a world where I belonged.” Accordingly, the in-demand writer has since said no to offers to option her third book, 2021’s Beautiful World, Where Are You. The same will be likely for her latest, Intermezzo.
Rooney’s decision was especially surprising given the TV market has been so driven by book IP, with option prices rising sharply and demand bigger than ever. In fact, around a year ago, we hear drama commissioners put out a call to TV makers. The broad message was “IP over original ideas as often as possible.” While books have long been the engine of television and film, the notion everything must come with proof of concept has shifted the dial.

“A Foundational Building Block”: The Procedural Is Back & Streamers Are Aboard – MIPCOM Scenesetters
News broadcasts have been dominated by conflict, pandemics and economic strife in recent years, and sometimes a bit of escapism is just what’s needed in troubled times.
Sellers are alert to this notion and know that nothing builds a greater sense of escapism than the procedural genre, one that is having a moment as buyers seek cheaper, repeatable fare in an era of squeezed budgets and risk aversion. That well-trodden formatted path of a pair of grizzly detectives solving the unsolvable each week feels very much in vogue again.
Huge international franchises such as NCIS, Death in Paradise and Seal have been expanding, while others have gotten a second wind on streaming platforms.
When Deadline invited submissions for its 2024 Hot Ones, we were not surprised that several distributors were making procedurals a cornerstone of their MIPCOM slates, including Paramount Global Content Distribution’s NCIS: Origins, Fifth Season’s Saint Pierre...

A riveting murder-mystery based on a prize-winning Japanese crime novel is at the heart of the upcoming limited series “The Aosawa Murders,” a buzzy U.S.-Japan co-production that’s being pitched this week at Rome’s Mia Market.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Japanese writer Riku Onda, the show is produced by Jonathan Kier of Upgrade Productions, the L.A.-based company launched in 2021 by the ex-Sierra/Affinity president Kier and former Disney Plus and Netflix executive Matt Brodlie, and Takeo Kodera of Japanese publishing house and media giant Kadokawa.
The series begins in 2004, when freelance writer Yuko arrives in the beautiful coastal city of Kanazawa to investigate the infamous “Aosawa Case,” a mass poisoning that occurred in 1973 when 17 members of the wealthy Aosawa clan died after drinking poisoned sake and soft drinks during a family celebration.

The EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival has unveiled the first batch of movies selected for its 2024 main competition — a trio of aesthetically adventurous stories about women.
The selection includes Jacques Audiard’s Cannes jury prize winner Emilia Pérez, Magnus von Horn’s arthouse drama The Girl with the Needle, and Rachel Morrison’s boxing biopic The Fire Inside. Camerimage organizers will unveil the rest of this year’s competition selection — which usually totals around a dozen movies — in the days ahead.
As previously announced, this year’s Camerimage competition will be assessed by a panel led by jury president and two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett.
Emilia Pérez and The Girl with the Needle both premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May — and both were selected by THR‘s critics as among the best films of the 2024 edition.

Sofia Vergara has played some insanely iconic roles over the years but she’s most known for playing the incredibly naive and yet feisty Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on Modern Family. This project helped the 52-year-old find a place in the industry, which also eventually kickstarted the launch of various business ventures that helped her become one of the most successful actresses today.

Despite being booked for roles in successful movies such as The Smurfs, Chef, and Despicable Me, while being recruited as a judge on America’s Got Talent, Vergara had one story that captured her heart, the story of Griselda Blanco, a Columbian drug lord.
Vergara ultimately turned it into a passion project and approached Narcos’ Eric Newman to produce the show with Netflix. Little did she know, Griselda would lead to one of her life’s lowest points.

Earlier this week, it was officially confirmed that Kyle Chandler of Super 8 will be playing the DC Comics character Hal Jordan in the upcoming HBO series Lanterns – but before Chandler gets to work on that show, he’ll be working with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on Rip, a crime thriller that’s written and directed by Joe Carnahan and is set up at the Netflix streaming service. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chandler will be playing a DEA agent in the film.
Rip will follow a group of Miami cops whose trust begins to fray after they discover millions in cash in a derelict stash house. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.
