One of the great things about Netflix is that even as it contributes to the slow mediocritization of filmmaking, it continues to broaden our collective cultural horizons. Yes, for every Kevin Hart's "Lift," which inexplicably had Netflix viewers enraptured earlier this year, there's a foreign film or series that we'd otherwise never have a chance to see. Last year, Indian thriller "Jaane Jaan" topped the Netflix charts in the U.S. while Mexican series "Thursday's Widows" saw similar streaming success stateside.
Now, it's Spain's turn. The country has had a mixed record when it comes to its streaming exports. Last year, god awful Spanish slasher "Killer Book Club" somehow had the Netflix charts in a stranglehold, but the country somewhat redeemed itself with the Oscar-nominated "Society of the Snow," which hit Netflix in January 2024. Now, España has delivered yet another Netflix hit with "El Correo" or "The Courier."

One of the benefits of Netflix and the streaming age in general is that audiences are being exposed to films and TV series from outside their own cultures. Last year, the Mexican limited series "Thursday's Widows" hit the Netflix top 10 in several countries, becoming the number three non-English TV series for the week of September 11 to September 17, 2023. But it was the Indian thriller "Jaane Jaan," which topped the Netflix charts worldwide back in September 2023, that had perhaps the most impressive Netflix run for a non-us film.
Becoming the most-watched non-English film on the streamer globally, with 8.1 million views for the week of September 18 to September 24, 2023, "Jaane Jaan" proved global Netflix viewers were not only willing to give films outside their own countries a go, but that these films could dominate viewing charts.
Now, in 2024, we've got yet another Indian Netflix hit that hasn't quite managed to ascend to the heights...

The fourth and final season of “Sex Education” has toppled “One Piece’s” reign atop Netflix’s global top 10 list of the most-watched TV series of the week.
“One Piece” held onto the coveted position for three weeks in a row. While movie studios are busy figuring out how to navigate the streaming era, Netflix is chugging along serving up all manner of forgotten oddities and hidden gems. After a rocky 2022 that saw the company crack down on password sharing to boost subscriber numbers, the streaming giant is back to doing what it does best — providing the masses with a cavalcade of film and TV media that no single human could consume in a lifetime.
This year, Netflix has already hosted a German thriller series that gained everyone's attention, as well as bringing such overlooked greats as the Karl Urban-starring "Dredd" to a whole new audience. Sometimes, the Netflix effect can be a bit baffling, such as when the abysmal Michael Fassbender thriller "The Snowman" started climbing the streamer's charts. Put simply, you never know what you're going to get with Netflix, which is pretty much the case with the...
