A surprisingly bland film from Danishka Esterhazy
jonathanallon20 July 2022
Danishka Esterhazy's reimagining of this classic German fable ends up being rather lifeless, stodgy, and quite bland. This is quite disappointing considering Esterhazy's talent, intelligence, and imagination, she brings very little of the latter to this much beloved tale. The child actors (who are the best thing in the film) were under-used, and creepy predatory grown-ups hijacked the story. I am fully aware that Hansel & Gretel is a dark and often horrifying fable, but the darkness had a magic and mean't something in the text, this seems to have niether magic or meaning..just a lot of naval gazing and wooden preformances by the adult actors.
