Man's best friend indeed.

NCIS as a television show provides a more humanizing and sometimes heartbreaking medium of the war in Afghanistan to its various and individualized viewers but this episode it particular went a bit further. The actress playing the wife created a character that I found so easy to sympathize with and love, whether it was through her love of her dog or genuine emotion. Using the dog in the storyline allowed viewers to see different ways a war is fought, even if only through a portrayal of these ways. The dog helped emphasize the sincerity and emotion in this episode. Like Ol' Yeller and other well portrayed dogs, Dex really tugged at the heartstrings especially in the last shot. I thought this episode was excellently done and would hope that all guest star's performances were as emotional and relatable as the one particular actress'. This season is shaping up to contain some of the best episodes yet. Only proof that NCIS even after ten seasons has lost its punch.

Outstanding and beautiful episode!

NCIS is one of those rare TV series that had survived the test of time. Unlike many shows that seem to use up all their energy and stop working after only a few seasons, NCIS has not only kept the energy going, but has also built a cast and the internal continuity that has become more dynamic through the years. One of the ways it has achieved this is by including episodes that vary from the usual themes and provide an emotionally engaging story line. This is one such episode.

This was truly a beautiful episode! Sgt. LeMere, a Marine dog handler stationed in Kabul, is shot by a sniper--reportedly Taliban, after saving two children. His wife, Ruby, had received a foreboding video message from him taped the day previous to his death. She brings that message to NCIS seeking answers.

That much of this episode's story line is revealed within the first few minutes. I don't want to reduce the power of this episode by revealing any more of the story. Suffice it to say, this episode was presented with performances that had the depth and believable emotional pull to engage the viewer, and a story line that was unique. The actress portraying Mrs. LeMere and the bomb dog, Dexter, both offered outstanding performances that truly made this episode outstanding and beautiful!

Man's, and a soldier's, best friend

This is not really a review of the episode, which I enjoyed. A good script, a good mystery, and the bad guy is (as usual) caught. What made this episode so enjoyable for me was have Dex having more than just a bit part. As the owner of 4 German Shepherds I always enjoy the episodes that feature dogs, especially German Shepherds (season 5's Dog Tags). I have always felt that military (and police) dogs are very special canines, but sometimes their worth is overlooked. Not so in this episode, Dex did his duty as he was trained to do, searching out explosives. And in the last scene in Afghanistan Dex displayed his loyalty as well, protecting Gibbs from the bad guy without regard for his own safety. This is special character of military dogs that many overlook. Some military dogs give their lives protecting their handlers, and are given the respect they deserve. But In this case Dex recovered from his bullet wound and retired from active duty. I especially liked the ending scene with Dex sitting and looking at his handler's coffin. It reminds me so much of the late President Bush's service dog Sully at his former master's casket when he lay in state at the Capitol.
