If you are old enough to remember the TV show, All in the Ohana starring comedian Andy Bumatai, then you will understand it when I say that Moku Moku is the spiritual successor of All in the Ohana.

I won't go into too much detail about story or plot, but I'd like to explain what I feel makes the show great... It doesn't take itself seriously. That's it. It tells stories that while unique to the local people of Hawaii, I feel can make anyone smile.

The funny moments (some of which are the kind you find in Naked Gun or Airplane) are in-between heartfelt demonstrations of friendship and family and even finding your place and purpose in life. All of this wrapped up with a competent, technical crew that gives a refreshing facelift to the aforementioned Bumatai comedy.

My review is based on the pilot, but I'm looking forward to the other episodes.

The acting is great amongst the main cast, and you can tell in some of the minor cast that they are greener, but that is to be expected (and the only reason I gave it a 9). What is really surprising is that you get a sense that the cast members all get along very well and it comes across on screen.

Again, Moku Moku doesn't take itself seriously, and that is welcomed by me during the crazy times we live in today.

Feels like Home

I love seeing Chino's comedic performance in this Maui series. It just gets better and better! I love seeing some of my favorite spots on the island and how the Hawaiian culture shines through in the storyline as the characters work through conflict and find resolution. The series is family friendly, fun, and is like a window into the unique community of upcountry Maui. And the culture is so rich and the community so diverse that there are so many stories to be told. I'm excited people are coming together to do just that. Overall a great show that I hope opens the door for more shows to come that are true to the local community, culture, art, and history. We love Moku Moku!!!

I was beyond impressed when I sat down to watch Moku Moku- it's very easy to get immersed in the story and it has a good tempo- The stories in this series are relatable, and the people are just actually the way they are here. It's feels good to have Maui represented in the way this authentic.

I like the way it captured your attention and kept going without any hesitation. The editing is very good.

The character Pili was super relatable with his antics and mischievous fun loving time- there are a lot of people like Pili here- It has been a breath of fresh air to see Local entertainment by local artists, actors, producers and the like.

So entertaining

This is the best comedy to come out of Hawaii. Its so much fun to watch. Already watched the first episode 3 times. Can't wait for the next episode to drop this week! This is going to be an exceptional series, I can feel it. Here's to many more seasons to come. The cast is fun and makes you want to get to know them more from week to week. The upcountry Maui local flair is super fun to see on screen. The production and crew did a spectacular job curating an experience that will be in our hearts for a long time. We are so lucky to get a glimpse into island country life. Be on the lookout for what's to come in the future from this crew!

Maui Mountain Magic
draagen-2528113 December 2023
This independent series about the life of locals in Upcountry Maui humorously pays homage to the struggles and triumphs of life on an island, away from the beaches and resorts which visitors might think is all there is to Hawaii (thanks to shows like Magnum P. I. and Hawaii Five-O).

The characters and their speech are recognizably "local" (but understandable by anyone) and if their struggles sometimes seem a little ridiculous (and hysterically funny), they are nonetheless universally human. The trio--Kimo, Pili, and Leilani--support one another facing issues of identity and destiny and struggles to make a living and a life in an economy that does not favor them and a cultural climate that may not see them or make space for them.

Featuring a laundry list of Maui luminaries, great writing and acting, beautiful photography, and scathing wit, Moku Moku is a must-see for anyone who loves Maui, who is curious about Hawaii, or who likes to laugh.

Awesome local entertainment
whalesandtales16 December 2023
Moku Moku is right up there with Reservoir dogs and Letterkenny. It shows you the side of Maui that tourism doesn't touch on. Classic upcountry hometown Maui life to bring you a closer experience to one of your favorite islands. It has local actors and local entertainment and it truly is a community project come to life and on your screen. This show immerses you in Maui culture and can bring you to the islands from anywhere in the world. If you're missing Maui - watch this show to feel back on island again. Grab a malasada and a spam musubi and get comfy to get to know Pili, Kimo and Leilani. Is your favorite going to be goofy lovable Pili? Or hopeful daydreamer Kimo? Or how about ambitious headstrong Leilani? Give a watch and support local art and entertainment to find out - you won't regret it.

A tropical breeze of comedy blowing away the seriousness of life
india-5515514 December 2023
In an era filled with craziness, "Moku Moku" stands out as a breath of fresh air, offering a welcome escape through its lighthearted approach. For those seeking a perfect blend of laughter, heart, and a touch of Hawaiian spirit, "Moku Moku" seems poised to deliver a memorable and enjoyable ride.

The main cast receives praise for their stellar performances, injecting life into the characters. Even the minor cast members, while perhaps a bit inexperienced, add a charm that only enhances the overall experience.

In conclusion, it's like a tropical breeze of comedy blowing away the seriousness of life. So, grab your coconut cup, sit back, and let "Moku Moku" be your ticket to an island of hilarity - where even the palm trees are chuckling at the witty one-liners. As the Hawaiians say, "Mahalo" to the cast and crew for giving us a dose of sunshine in our TV schedules. Get ready to ride the laughter wave, because "Moku Moku" is the comedy luau you never knew you needed!

I naturally love and hate this show! It is so funny and really shows you the side of Hawaii that is not depicted in other shows and movies. The cast is fantastic super funny and all locals. Everyone on this project are locals and truly shows how hardwork and determination helps you achieve your dreams. Also the writing is fantastic very witty and really helps tell the story of our 3 friends and their life on island. If you have not watched this show yet you should check it out. It will definitely tickle your funny bone. I can't wait to see more from these talented artists, they are definitely going places but it doesn't desrver 10/10.

Our new favorite show - big laughs all heart!
thisiskaia20 December 2023
Prepare to fall in love with absolutely everything about Moku-Moku. We all have our favorite characters at our house and love their comic adventures. It's a show you'll want to binge with the whole fam, and a real look at island life on Maui for the local and native peoples. If you loved Reservation Dogs and Letterkenny like us, this is your new favorite. We don't usually see "upcountry" life pictured on TV at all- life on the slopes of the volcano which is more ranch style than anything tourists imagine Hawaii being- and that's what's fabulous about the setting. It's not a show trying to sell you some idea or fantasy of Hawaii- it's real Hawaii. It's the people. It's the traditions. It's also the challenges of living in the most expensive state in the country, for working young people trying to make ends meet. It's relatable, fun, silly and also quietly edgy. You'll love it! TV comedy at its best!

Far exceeded my enthusiastic expectations
mwukelic-6121017 December 2023
Having lived 30 + years on Maui before returning to the mainland three years ago, I really looked forward to Moku Moku. I expected to truly enjoy a local perspective on a reasonably good program. What I didn't expect was such a highly professional, well acted, well-written, and extremely well shot production. Moku Moku can hold its own with many Hollywood sponsored comedies shot locally. The difference, however, is that - being written, performed and shot by people who know and live the Maui life - it's 100% better than anything us " decent, well meaning mainlanders" could do. This, folks, is truly island life. I love it.

The Real Maui
paperboatjohn5 January 2024
This is a traditional sitcom told in a completely non-traditional way. The local production crew and actors are dedicated to bringing the vibrancy, humor and challenges of upcountry life on Maui to the screen through stories that entertain, first and foremost, while illuminating the magic of real Maui once you get away from the beaches, palm trees and timeshares.

The production values are remarkably high, the acting is engaging and natural, and the jokes hit with wonderful timing.

If you've had the opportunity to visit up country Maui, like we have, you will see lots of familiar landmarks in places like Makawao and Ha'iku. If not, you'll get to see them for the first time along with a view of the lives of the people who make this wonderful place their home.

So far the series can be viewed through an inexpensive pay wall on their website, but I hope the production company will be able to land a spot on a streaming service soon.

Tune in, and be an early adopter of this wonderful new show.
