It keeps getting darker...
TheCornProject20 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Without any new leads, Cohle and Hart decide to continue questioning friends, family and known associates of Dora Lange in the hopes of sparking a fresh break in the case. It appears that a common theme is developing surrounding Dora's initial disappearance. Her connection with a traveling church group is starting to raise a red flag for the detectives. While the case is exposing sinister overtones, the personal lives of our lead detectives is beginning to unravel. Martin Hart's family man facade is cracking under the pressure of the case. He candidly admits to marital infidelity in the interview room which he explains helps him decompress the issues he faces at work. It seems my original assessment of Hart's flawless ability to separate his personal life with his work life was an overstatement. Both Hart and Cohle share a dark side which may galvanize our opinion of them for the rest of the series.

It is soon revealed that Cohle was institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital back in 1993 after he shot dead three drug cartel members during a deep undercover operation that went terribly awry. The psychological damage caused by Cohle's extensive drug use while working in narcotics division may have permanently altered his perception of reality. In a chilling moment, Cohle displays his violent streak towards two non-compliant witnesses who fail to reveal the whereabouts of a local brothel that Dora worked at. Later at the 'Bunny Ranch', the discovery of Dora's diary yields vital new clues about her association with the church. Dora's bizarre ramblings about a king and his children shed some light on her state of mind. All clues point to the church and with a new address to follow up on, the detectives are optimistic about making further headway on the case. Unfortunately for them, their supervisor Major Ken Quesado (Kevin Dunn) seems all but impressed by their findings venting his frustration at the lack of suspects. Pressure from his superiors is threatening case reassignment for Hart and Cohle. With time against them, our detectives must find some answers before the case goes cold.

The episode ends with an ominous scrawling on the wall of the burnt out church that Dora attended. The image shows a naked women who is bound and has antlers attached to her head. The trail for the killer/s of Dora Lange has just heated up but whether Hart and Cohle can handle what they find is a whole other question entirely.

Warning: Spoilers
Another very good episode. These first two episodes have been very heavy on character building, but with these two incredibly interesting leads, I'm not complaining at all. We got more insight into Rust's character and how he came to be the way he is (4 murders and lots of drugs apparently). He's almost empty in the way he carries out his police work. He has an objective and he will complete it even if that means beating two guys up. He's not interested in sex or anything else really. Just the case. Marty isn't as held up as he seems to think he is. He doesn't exactly have a perfect relationship with his wife, notwithstanding the fact that he's cheating on her. He also has the world's most fragile ego, so it's no wonder that his pairing with Rust, someone with pretty much no ego at all, is so engaging. Once again there were some brilliant quotes from Rust that I absolutely resonate with, particularly those about reproducing, and overall the dialogue in this show is just top tier. The imagery with Rust's hallucinations were amazing, particularly the flock of birds, and once again the visuals in general were excellent. In regards to the case itself, things are still moving very slowly, and while Rust is a fascinating character and Marty is also a very good character, there's not much else happening for the time being, but that should change very soon

World keeps spinning

Warning: Spoilers
"Seeing Things", the second episode of True Detective maintains the momentum and gravitas established in the premiere. Detective Hart learns the secret about his partner that his wife learned last episode. And we learn a somewhat morally ambiguous secret about Hart himself. It is interesting that the show actually spent some time on the other person involved and their motivations and desires. An actor from Breaking Bad has a cameo which was a pleasant surprise.

Once again I have to praise the photography. The early morning scenes of the decayed marsh and obfuscated flashback sequences. The show is pleasant to look at it in a Southern Gothic sort of way. The frame story format is really starting to come alive and augment the story itself (the two interviewers are becoming characters unto themselves as opposed to just plot devices). I am also glad that Kevin Dunn got more screen time this episode and exercise his authority over Kohle.

I am definitely looking forward to how the rest of this season plays out.

The character unravel!
mm-393 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
True Detective is one Dark series. Seeing Things episode reveals the darker sides of the characters Hart and Cohle. Hart's stress release activities or swank affairs and pent up rage wrecks havoc with Hart's wife. Hart's wife looks like she may have eyes for Hart's partner Cohle. Revenge is on her mind!(My guess). Cohle is a non-believing in God, pessimist about people whose dark nature could be a result of his young daughter's death. Cohle is a drug addict in order to sleep and function. Cohle is an empty person whose whole life involves police work. Cohle's apartment has no furniture just functioning bare bone necessities, which represents Cohle's empty life. The two detectives work perfectly in solving the case. Cohle's weakness of all work in an analytic/psychological manner creates leads, while Hart's social skills works with inter police politics. The only darker plot twist is the more they find out about the serial killer the darker the series becomes. Add the spooky back drop of rural Louisiana there is a dark evil mix for True Detective.

Characters show depth
ramirez_aj7 July 2022
Episode where characters are in situations which gives more dimmension to them. You know how it goes by now. However did anyone else notice that harsh frequency in Alexandrias apartment? Constant ringing but only in scenes in her apartment.

Go to the church
AvionPrince1614 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Still enjoy it so far. It have some nice investigations and we know a little bit more about the victim and they will discover a drawing with the same position and weird dress as the victim in the church and that make it pretty interesting. We know a little bit more about the inspector who cheated on his wife with another woman who is pretty hot i need to admit. I love also how the other inspector describe his visions and how he sees himself sometimes like a crazy man and sometimes like a genius. Pretty nice episode with a plot that become more and more interesting: we wondering why the victim had that corn in her head, why in that position? Does the victim knew her killer? So many questions and so much to see. Pretty encouraging for the next episodes.

Rust: That a down payment?
bombersflyup18 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Seeing Things is solid, but not as witty and funny as the opener and without progressing the story much. A lot of dark personal stuff, which is character building but nothing evoking. Alexandra Daddario makes a nice appearance, though the character isn't worth a damn being interested in Marty and all.

8.65/10, Getting Better
dcdude-269887 July 2023
Another great episode of this possible epic season of television. This is the last episode of the episodes that are a 9 star rating or lower, because every episodes between 3-8 are a 9.1 star rating or higher, which I am surprised. My favorite characters in this episode were Rust, Marty, and Maggie. My favorite things about this episode were the Protagonist, the storyline, and the Cinematography. I asked my mom what the ranking of the True Detectve seasons were, she told me that this season was the best, the third one was in the middle, and the second was the worst one. I personally wonder if the 4th episode of this season is really the best episode of this season, according to this app's/website's rating.

Sluggish Program #2 Fails to Engage
lavatch9 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The second program of this highly overrated series, the second episode concludes with the two detectives having made virtually no progress in their murder investigation. Their work has been so inconsequential that it appears as though a state task force is about to take over their job.

In "true" detective dramas, there is a sustained, compelling narrative. In this series, the major problem is the constant flashbacks that disrupt the flow of the action. This would be a much better drama if all of the flashbacks were eliminated and the filmmakers trust in their story-telling abilities without forcing the actors into the interview rooms.

The best part of the show was the snappy dialogue between the two detectives. It is an interesting matching of personalities because Hart is so different from Cole. Both are unsavory types with the adulterous, self-loathing Hart and the shady, guilt-ridden Cole complementing each other. But the program undercuts its greatest strength by separating for long stretches of time the two detectives in the two interview rooms, as they reconstruct their partnership for the police investigators.

On the occasional moments when we see the faces of the interviewers questioning the two detectives, they seem bored to tears. Well, so is the audience!
