Sit back, relax and get entertained
ketgup8313 January 2014
From debutant director Neason, this movie is a treat for Vijay and Mohanlal fans. A master move to cast Mohanlal to attract audiences across different states. The story revolves around the relationship between Shakthi (Vijay) and Sivan (Mohanlal) who plays father-son duo. Sivan is a gangster who rules the city of Madurai and Vijay plays his foster son who is his trusted right hand in closing matters. Vijay hates policemen after a tragic incident involving his father. The movie starts as a predictable as an average entertainer until an unbelievable twist in the story breathes life into the movie.

The movie has all elements required for a mass entertainer. Songs and background score are impressive from Imman. With some peppy numbers, Vijay does a decent job of entertaining all his fans. With regular doses of comedy, sentiment, stunts, songs and dialogues the movie is a must watch for Vijay fans and is a movie to sit back, relax and watch. Mohanlal does a decent job with his Tamil pronunciation and Kajal Agarwal is visible during songs.

So sit back, relax and get entertained. Good 3/5

Smarter...........

Basically handling two major superstars in one film is not easy at all for anyone, even for a talented director. However, in this film direction towards vijay and mohanlal seemed to be much good either in action scenes or in fun making scenes. As this film been considered as the commercial entertainer, it totally exemplifies it undoubtedly. Along with vijay and mohanlal other co stars also given their best, which's the most highlight able point in this film. From beginning to end it could be considered as the tasty commercial recipe which has all ingredients perfectly, but only turned little badly in climax somehow. For a film, climax is the most significant segment which's because it may decide whether the film been enjoyed by the audience or not. According to me i only felt bad about he climax. Besides the climax, this film is a solid commercial entertainer which has lovable music, fun, sentiment, and action overall. In conclusion Jilla is an expectable treat for his fans, and no one should miss this entertainer for any reason.....

Emotional Roller-coaster
uniquest11 January 2014
It's Pongal season, and time for some new movies. Having never missed any of Vijay's films from the outset, I made my way to a premiere show of 'Jilla' here in SL.

A typical mass masala type movie once again. Nothing new to Vijay definitely. The first half is full of comedy, and with Vijay as the lead actor, we definitely know that it's a treat to watch his comedy acts. That's definitely a plus to the movie. Towards the middle, some really emotional scenes, that definitely tends to move the crowd to silence in the theater. And an action packed, all star ending to seal the movie.

Upside? Good comedy by Vijay himself, no doubt. Some good father-son and family scenes. And good BG music too. The songs are sure a hit. Action packed, with a few twists here and there. And since it's Vijay and Mohanlal we are talking about, the acting is definitely too good and very enjoyable.

Downside? Soori hasn't been used enough for comedy. In Velayudham it was a better performance. And the heroine, Kajal's character too has been rushed. As the main female lead, I guess she deserved some more juice in the plot. And the length of the movie. That's the biggest fail. It goes on for more than 3 hours. I feel they could have cut down a bit on the unnecessary parts.

So what's the verdict? 7 is my rating. Not as superb as Thuppaki was. But it's above Thalaiva for sure. A sure Pongal treat for the die hard Vijay fans. And a decent watch to the other neutrals, to enjoy with the family as well.

Only for Vijay Fans
raj04049210 January 2014
The off-the-chart expectations stirred by the release of projects of two mega stars lured me in for the first day premiere of "Jilla". Despite encircled by a surreal crowd that screamed "Vijay" at the top of their lungs, I managed to find a tunnel vision with a neutral point of view and am penning this review in the same perspective.

Jilla is the story of the Godson of a Don, who turns into a police officer to aid his godfather, who then does a 180 degree shift opposing him and offers an ultimatum: Change or I will Change you.

The typical essence of a Masala entertainer is sprinkled in vast proportions and hence finds an appeal among the fans. Neutral viewer, like me, will find it hard to sit through several scenes which were deliberately inserted to find whistles rather than aiding the pace of the screenplay.

Over 60 years of combined experience between "Mohanlal" and "Vijay" overshadows almost everyone else on screen. Kajal is just a 3 song dancer with 3 extra scenes none of which feeds her acting appetite. Suri, with his double-meaninged wit, has tried a few gags which in most cases deserve sympathy rather than laughter.

As usual, stunts and songs play spoilsport, since they are logic-less and speed breakers respectively. Suri himself quotes, "Why, unnecessarily, did you stretch a one liner into a song?"

Despite these flaws, the audience will find the movie appealing only because they are able to see the entertainment behind all the aforementioned veils. To give a clear comparison this flick is somewhere between "Thalaiva" and "Thuppaki". Unlike Thalaiva, this is original but unlike Thuppaki this isn't universal.

A little more editing could have sharpened the movie.

An average attempt (5/10).

300 films get released every year in Tamilnadu. And another 300 sleep in the box. With stakes so high, its not surprising to see Vijay playing to the gallery. Ironically, it actually has a good screenplay that plays down its values and lets the stars outshine itself. But, that's precisely why it garnered a record-breaking opening.

Jilla has a backbone of a screenplay, with a few backstories thrown in efficiently. However, the typical hero steals the thunder from it and the crowd pulling elements dominate the depth. Director Neason has it in him to weave in both sentiment and entertainment appropriately. However, south being south, his hero steals all the attention from the story Jilla – Earth shattering Opening.

another VIJAY movie
alanjermy612 January 2014
well lets say, this is another typical vijay movie. its got a similar storyline like his previous movies, save his father, help the poor. its all the same but the movie actually doesn't get you bored at any part, it actually moves you along, there are no stand out scenes in the movie, the movie does a decent job of telling what it wants us to know.

the acting is amazing, vijay brings his likability to screen and mohanlal brings his best out to screen, this time around there is a lot of emotional moments and vijay and mohanlal nail the emotional scenes. the action scenes are exactly what you can expect from a vijay movie, the comedy also is pretty good, though they have double meaning, kajal looks adorable and there is no much importance for her role, she is just there for the sake of having an actress in the movie, something lack in the film but it never pulls you off the experience, this is the movie you can watch once, don't get your expectations high, just sit and get a popcorn

100% Pure and Authentic Mass Masala film nothing more than that...
SivakumarBalachandran9 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Jilla has got what it is perfectly needed for a typical authentic 100% pure commercial masala movie. It will be a treat for core Vijay fans but not for everyone.

The story is usual Rowdy-Police encounters. Here the Rowdy turns to be a police and wants to do rehabilitation to his own x-colleagues and whether he succeeds in this game or not will be the rest of the story. Talking of games I found this movie was like snake and ladders entirely we can see so many antagonists getting smashed just like that, seriously effortlessly by our commercial hero. At one stage we lose count on the no of villains.

Casting : Definitely it's not a new role which Vijay has took in this film so nothing new but he has given what was demanded by the character. Then definitely applause to Lal Yetan (Mohan lal) who is a super star of Malayalam Cinema has done his character very well. I didn't want to reveal the cat and mouse crux of Vijay and Mohan Lal. Other than these two leads we have got almost so many known supporting actors throughout the film some of them used well and some of them wasted. Kajal just plays the usual dumb commercial heroine role.

On the whole it seemed like the director had 10 commercial scripts and gave them all mixed as a single flick testing our patience on the second half of the movie.

The movies technical aspects where average maybe it was a quick venture after Thalaivaa. Also the length of the movie went almost 3 hours.

Jilla= 10% father sentiment + 19% hero build up + 10% commercial show offs like item dance and hero fighting 10 people at a time+ 10% sister and brother sentiment + 10% over done songs + 10% comedy + 10 % too much villains + 10% romance + 10% supporting cast+ 1% story = 100% mass masala film

Commercial Cocktail
varunanand54127 February 2014
Its one of those Commercial rockets. Works primarily B-COS although its got stars, its got a engrossing story that keeps claiming attention. Something or other happens in Jilla ! either somebody is comical or somebody is fighting a war or somebody is asking justice. Its this "story-laden" aspect that works big-time for this movie. on the flip side, there was probably too much story. every scene had detailing which worked largely positively and at times, over-whelmed the frame. But try telling that to vijay die-hard fans ! Direction was smooth. Not over- doing anything and good tempo maintained throughout. I wonder why there were complaints on the pacing. i look forward to good story-telling and pacing is never a deterrent in an action masala. overall, Jolly enjoyable film

Pakka entertainer
GobuRajendran20 January 2014
A Decent entertainer. Vijay is back in his Vetaikaran and pokkiri style.

Jilla is a pakka MASS movie, loved it totally. As Vi-jay (Shakthi) father die during he try to save Mohan Lal when their enemies attacking him. Lal adopting Vi-jay as his elder son. They are actually a don family. At certain point vi-jay is desired to be a police AC. That time he realize what they are doing is not good and he wants to turn lal and to stop their illegal activities. Second half show's how Shakthi (VJ) turn mohan lal in to his way.

Songs are plus. VJ dance is awesome.

Vijay and Mohanlal bring in the color!
thunder2321 March 2014
Its Pongal 2014. This time around, we have the deadly combo of Ilayathalapathy Vijay and Mohanlal coming together for Jilla, which is producer RB.Choudry's 85th film. Debutant RT.Neason dons the director's cap, while D.Imman scores the music.

Jilla is the story of the sweet relationship between Sivan (Mohanlal) and Shakthi (Vijay) which turns sour due to a series of events.

The movie begins with a classy intro for Mohanlal followed by a little flashback. But the real fun begins when Vijay arrives with a thunderous stunt scene. The first half traverses with comedy which is silly at times, songs at regular intervals and a few action scenes. The interval block is bang on, as Neason had a good twist in store there.

Into the second half, and Jilla follows the tried and tested commercial movie formula. Songs, fights and punch lines galore, the circle of problem arising in one scene, and getting solved in the next swirls for quite a number of times. Although there are some scenes which are absolutely hair raising, there are a few which will make you squirm in your seat. The twists at the end too, are predictable.

Coming to performances, and the two stalwarts are a joy to watch. Vijay keeps the tempo going with his funny mannerisms, which do go over the top at a few instances. It is doubtlessly an enjoyable performance though. Mohanlal who grabs the majority of the screen space in the first half is mighty as he fits into the role of the character pretty well, and excels in his Tamil diction. Kajal is cute, and looks like a dream in the song sequences. Out of the supporting performances, Mahat Raghavendhar is a charm in his pivotal role. Poornima Bhagyaraj, Niveda, Sampath Raj, Pradeep Rawat and the others fit the bill.

Dialogues by N.Baskaran are good, albeit sounding too punchy when it comes to Mohanlal. Cinematography by Ganesh Rajavelu is appreciable, especially in the stunt sequences. Editing by Don Max could have much crispier, as it would have aided the lengthy runtime of the film. Although they lack sense, the stunts are visually worthy. Choreography in Jilla was a huge blow as Imman's foot tapping music was brought down by the unimpressive dance moves. Vijay's wardrobe deserves a special mention.

Music by D.Imman is the kingpin of Jilla. The songs are already tring ringers amidst all stations. Bringing in almost 5 different versions of the theme, he has put in all his efforts to make the BGM stand strong.

RT.Neason could have scaled heights with the story he had with Jilla. The screenplay however, doesn't hit full monty and the movie ends up being a disappointment, baring in the mind the star cast and the production values. Nevertheless, nothing can stop Jilla from being a box office success, lapped up with glee by the fans especially.

Good
pradeepkumar000711 March 2014
Mohanlal making an appearance was the only motivating factor for me to watch Jilla. And Lalettan under-played subtly. I didn't expect this. But that's exactly why I liked it.

Lalettan could have been given more platform to exhibit his histrionics. But ironically, not exceeding is why the role stands out on its own. There is no hyper-realistic histrionics nor mad-cap mayhem. But there's the ubiquitious punch thrown into satisfy the local audience. Lal is definitely much more than, but sivans boundary stops there and lal becomes sivan and does ample justice by mellowing down.

There's this one shot in a far-off highway, where hes sitting like a King Dethroned, robbed of pride and glory and yet the director didn't subject the scene to melodrama. Instead he let Lalettan shed a …teardrop ! I love Jilla

Jilla is not Vijay's best.
sujibarath11 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Hard to find Plus from the movie...

Usual old storyline, Too lengthy script. Comedy & Kajal not used properly.

Kajal Aggarwal is wasted. It appears like she is in the film just to fill the glam quotient. Her chemistry with Vijay doesn't work.

At parts, the narration is dragging and placement of songs are quite boring. In fact, the item song, which was supposed to cheer up the mood, plays spoilsport. Adding to that Kajal's love sequences are forcefully added.

Ganesh Rajavelu's cinematography is good, but Don Max's editing could have been a lot better. Selva's action sequences are praise worthy. Finally, newbie Nesan has tried his best to impress the audience. But in order to build a story that suits Vijay and Mohanlal's images, he has lost the control over the screenplay.

Decent Entertainer
Punter_Hunter24 March 2018
The movie is about the relationship between Don - Sivan(MohanLal) and his foster son - Shakthi (Vijay). Shakthi hates policeman and Khaki(police uniform) but Sivan decides to get him into police force in order to carry out his illegal activities without any problem. Things take turn when after an unfortunate incident Shakthi turns into an honest and sincere policeman confronting his father Sivan and his illlegal activities. Rest of the story tells us whether the rift between father-son was genuine or was it a conspiracy by their enemies , or did they plan it themselves , Do they re unite , Does Sivan gives up his illegal business or not ?

Its a masala entertainer with dosage of comedy , action , family bonding which entertains effectively but there is a big weak point in my opinion - the transition of Shakthi . The event that led to his transformation should have been nothing new to shakthi, with him being a right hand to underworld don. Yes , we are not supposed to think a lot in masala entertainers but this thing was very blatant and hard to fathom. If the reason which initiates the confrontation and leads you to the main story is weak it somehow stays with you and questions you.

Mohanlal is excellent as ruthless dominating don who doesn't want his rule to slip away and as a doting father and family man. Vijay is good in comedy and action scenes but at places fumble during emotional scenes. Kajal Aggarwal looks good but she doesn't have much to do apart from providing romantic and comedy relief . Remaining characters doesn't have much to do but were good in whatever part they had to play ..

All in All its decent masala entertainer and you wont be disappointed if you are looking for some entertainment Tamil cinema style :)

Effective Entertainer
lakkhar2 March 2014
Full time-pass Thamizh film starring Vijay, Mohanlal, Kajal,Sampath, "parotta" Suri, Thambi Ramaiah, Mahath, Poornima Bhagyaraj. A multi-starrer of all sorts, the film boasts of a huge budget, colorful extravaganza and maximum entertainment. Vijay is the darling of the masses and Jilla went onto become one of the biggest films with record- breaking opening collections, upon release. The film recently celebrated its 50th day amidst much pomp and fanfare.

Story-wise, it's a typical father-son equation going all wrong and the film deals with emotional conflict, proving to be an effective family entertainer. Direction is by RT.Neason and credit goes to him for handling two super-stars in an extremely effective and casual way, right in his second film. Cinematography is by Ganesh Rajavelu and Imman, who is the current king of melody, has composed five foot-tapping songs. Overall, an effective entertainer

Great Watch
IPyaarCinema15 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Jilla is a commercial flick and having a strong base in its casting supported by a simple story plot from Neason. Jilla is short time twister and breaks suspense scene by scene. Having two equally popular and established actors in the cast list warrants perfect etching of their characters and Neason has satisfied this big time. The artist's understanding of their roles and their experience comes much handy in the effective portrayal of their respective characters with a lot of aplomb. Out of the other supporting cast members, it is Soori who stands out. The major attraction of the movie is the relationship between the father and his adopted son. The director portrayed the emotions quite well.

After the initial half an hour, the tempo in the story slows down completely till the pre-interval block. Also the scenes between Vijay and Kajal are not convincing and Kajal's character needed a lot of establishment. The abrupt ending is also a big drawback for the movie.

Overall, Jilla is an entertaining film that keeps the viewer engaged throughout and weaves action and drama with family sentiments and ideals in good balance.

Terribly boring movie and a waste of my time!
BreakTheRules12 January 2014
Well, to be honest, when I went to the Theatre, I had a lot of expectations for this movie. As a fan of Vijay and a bigger fan of Mohanlal, I expected this to be an excellent source of entertainment. My expectations were completely let down in 45 minutes. First of all, the movie is extremely long. It is the same old cliché story. There was absolutely no innovation. Before going to the movie, you can keep your brains at home and you will still feel this is star-studded garbage (Mohanlal + Vijay).

I was waiting for a comedian to do something entertaining, but Soori cannot be called a full-fledged comedian! The jokes were terrible. Someone with an ounce of intelligence will not watch such garbage.

Don't know about the general audience, but, there is no story to this movie, no good comedy no drama nor any emotions. I gave 2 stars just for Vijay, Mohanlal and Kajal Aggarwal being in the movie. I don't understand why Vijay and Mohanlal would do this kind of movie!

Family Sentiment Entertainer
aneesibrahim971 March 2014
Decent Entertainer. Songs were good. Story was nice. Mohanlal acted very well. Simple acting. No over-acting. Family emotions and sentiment also well done. Scene with sister in second half also good. Sampath unexpected villain. Good twist. Seeing poornima jayaram on screen after years was also nice. No overacting by mother and son in drama scenes. Heroine portion could have been better. But melody was nice. Imaan is proving he is boss of melody. Too much fighting, although crowds like it. In fact movie has lot of fights which todays youth love ! which i felt could have been avoided. but to compensate, Parotta suri is very comical. But expected more from thambiramaiah. Overall, nice movie. Can be enjoyed with family.

Jilla - My Thought
sudhakarfriends19 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
It is a movie with a good base story but a poor first half with an excellent middle half and a little lengthy final half.

Pros:

1. Actor Vijay with his screen presence is stealing the show in most of the scenes.

2. Pretty good songs and BGM by Imman. Intro song, Kandangi and Treatu song is a delight to watch.

3. Actor Sampath with his classy acting.

4. Stunt sequences are good and apt for a masala entertainer.

Cons:

1. Poor artist selection by Director Neason. A versatile actor like Mohan lal has been wasted with just shouting "Naan Sivan da… Sivan illana Sakthi illa". The story is based in Madurai and Mohan Lal speaking a tamil mixed with malayalam slang is little hard to accept. I felt actor like Raj Kiran would have suited this character pretty well.

2. The most first half comedy is pretty bad. Parotta Soori following Santhanam's path of double meaning comedy is very disappointing. Vijay's so called comedy with Kajal Agarwal by touching her ass is so awkward. An actor like Vijay who also has the inbuilt talent of comedy can do much better.

3. Kajal Agarwal, was really funny to see her in Police Attire.

4. Actor Vijay's dialog delivery in few places reminds me Mahesh Babu's dialogue delivery in Dhookudu movie. He could have tried little differently.

5. Good Actors like Azhagam Perumal, Ravi Maria were not properly utilized.

So to summarize, jilla a 6 star rated movie that can be watched once.

Love you Jilla
premnivas7452 March 2014
Whoa… it was a mass celebration at the theaters. Loved loved Jilla and Vijay. FDFS was needless, to say, rocking. But I missed half the dialogs. And the next time , was more into the story . Super entertainer. It had everything. Masala, Mass, fun, youth, love, songs, fights. A regular Vijay film with Lal thrown in, to kick-start the screenplay.

Fights were absolute kick-ass. And I liked "Verasa Pogayile" song. Everyone praised "kandaangi". And it delivered. But I liked "verasa" visuals more. First I thought Vijay' s gonna do soft love like "faazil" or "kaavalan" type films , but this later developed into "eppa mama treatuu" . As I said, that's what hit me . You think it's a soft drama, it suddenly hardens into Lal-VJ fighting and then smooths down again. I like this sorta fizz. Makes easy watching

Warning: Spoilers
I gone to see this movie as a neutral fan but disappointed completely..The character sketch is almost a remake of Telugu movie Prasthanam..director made changes in the story the protagonist being a police officer(why the hell vi jay is going behind remakes)...Masala quotient worked well and the director handled it well but where the hell is the story..the story is a disappointment considering the image of Laleetan in Malayalam movies...Vijay made his presence in the movie so as Mohanlal..other characters were poor..Full marks for Imman's Bgm and songs but director failed it with a poor story line..If you are a vi jay fan this movie is a Awesome..but if you are a neutral fan this is deep crap.

Colorful Jilla
lakshmi-sakhy2 March 2014
Would I see another Tamil film starring Lal Saab and Vijay again. I would rather see Jilla again. A film has to be racy, roaring and exciting. After so much of art and kitsch, I was stunned to see a colorful Jilla with an arresting Mohanlal and a dashing Vijay. Vijay is genuinely charming. His heroine Kajal has a great attitude, a lesser screen presence and The song locales are exotic.

Jilla works primarily because it has a nice twist towards the end. I like it when there's a suspense. When there's a quiet story lurking behind the scenes and I like it, that I could take my family out for a Pongal holiday without squirming in the seat. Colorful Film
