Like art film? This is for you. Just want to see cool skiing..? you might be bored.
yorkrandir18 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
'Into the Mind' is an intense, unrelenting, and at times difficult to stick with film. All the same, for those who want to sit down and watch a film that requires a little thought (a rarity in the extreme sports genre) it is a highly rewarding hour or so.

Straight off the bat, this is not meant to be a ski-movie, but rather a movie in which the central character happens to be an elite skier.

We follow him as he tries, fails, and then tries again to conquer the goal he has set himself. In aid of this we are treated to several flash-backs and cut-aways which illustrate his state of mind, his hopes, fears, aspirations and beliefs, as well as the path he has trodden (literally and figuratively) to get to where he is.

All in all these scenes are highly effective, using extreme sports (in the main part skiing, but also touching on others) to illustrate the battle we have with nature and our own will during the course of our lives. However, the film-makers tend to take it a little too far adding symbol into symbol, allegory into allegory, with one too many wildlife shots, one too many rotating landscape sequences, and not enough human interest. This in one sense is understandable, as the stock in trade for more narrative extreme sports movies is just to cut in fly-on-the-wall footage or the protagonists talking to camera. 'In the Mind' is definitely trying something new, and largely succeeding, but in places it feels like the film-makers just finished their "101 in Image Metaphor" at film school, and are trying to bundle in as much as they can.

Speaking of image... this film looks AWESOME. Clearly they had a budget for the highest quality of cameras, and had the people who knew how to use them. It is the kind of footage that brings tears to the eyes, and is so good that most of the time, even if you don't get/like what the film is trying to do narratively, it makes it worth watching anyway.

Skiing wise this film is also mouth droppingly good... in my own subjective opinion, i've not been this wowed by the things they are skiing and how they are skiing them since snowboard film 'The Art of Flight' and Sherpas Cinemas' debut 'All I Can'.

That said, I'm only giving this film a 7. Why? Whatever the producers might say, it's clearly a ski film. It has been marketed as a ski film. Although there is some amazing skiing in the film, I don't think the film makers have managed the balance between providing enough awesome skiing and telling the narrative story they wanted to. Considering that ultimately the protagonist decides not to take on the quest that is driving him, there is no pay off or climax in terms of the amazing line we are waiting to see at the end. For those who have bought into the premise of the film, that's not too much of a problem, but for those who started watching just for great skiing, and stuck with it in the hope that at the end the guy would smash the monster mountain, that might come as a massive let down. I started watching this film as a ski film, and it was luck that I happen to like art film as well, but I don't think I can recommend this to a lot of my ski friends, and that has to speak volumes.

Innovative and extremely clever movie
criticismquotes10 October 2013
This is (with a few exceptions) a visual masterpiece, and the storytelling is extremely beautiful and clever. Just don't expect a ski movie.

First, why is it so good? The cinematography and editing is some of the best i have ever seen. There is a lot of eye-candy, and if you don't pay attention the film might strike you as a long music video, and you miss the actual story. Every frame is very thoroughly chosen to represent thoughts, memories and feelings in the mind of the main character. The best word to describe Into The Mind is innovative, and there is no movie quite similar to it except maybe All I Can.

The film has received quite a few negative comments from frustrated and disappointed hardcore fans of ski movies. I completely understand why some are disappointed, the film is simply not primarily a ski movie. Into The Mind is, as I see it, first of all an exploration of some of the most fundamental aspects of being a human being, and it only uses extreme skiing as a symbol in its metaphorical (and strictly visual) way of telling the story. Sounds pretentious? Absolutely, if you want skiing and think that all other scenes are just there to look good (and believe me, this is planet earth-quality photography). A very CGI-intense scene with snowboarder Benji Farrow, and a segment of Callum Pettit growing a fake beard have received most criticism, both of which are very symbolic and, of course, look exactly the way the filmmakers wanted them to look. I don't believe the connection some people make between not liking the movie, and not getting the movie. Into the mind simply isn't everyones cup of tea.

My guess is that this movie will continue to stir up feelings, and it will probably be widely appreciated beyond the skiing-society. Hopefully, for the prodigious Sherpas Cinema, this is a step towards even more thought-provoking films, which does not necessarily involve skiing.

Epic movie worth watching!
iniwebdesign27 May 2014
Beautiful enchanting artistic movie of epic proportions in my humble opinion. To all the naysayers on here looking for your typical run of the mill warren miller ski movies galore, then look away. To anyone who wants to see a gorgeous artistic masterpiece, then you've found the right place. There are so many ridiculously awesome scenes featuring amazing hi- def footage that is interwoven into a poetic and enchanting storyline.

The kind of footage in this film reminds me of other beautiful movies of similar genre, like Baraka, Samsara, the Koyaanisqatsi(or qatsi) trilogy, chronos, Anima Munda, etc. The kind of movie that shows breathtaking scenes of nature, people and movement.

The theme present in this movie, is Man's undying thirst to ride the waves of water, in all its forms. To dance, swim, play and dream of water. Whether its skiing, snowboarding or surfing, or dreaming. It's Man vs Water....and it's an amazing flick.

4 Thumbs up, if only I had that many thumbs!

Great Film!
deg08915 October 2013
First off, this is not All.I.Can., this is a whole different beast of a film. All.I.Can. can be taken literally by the fact Sherpa Cinemas did all they could to produce the best ski movie and try to drive home images that should be making people question the reality in front of them. Into the Mind tries to explore this world of reality from the viewpoint of the "hero". Whether or not this hero's adventure is based off some true experiences of the skiers in this film is unknown to me, but i thought the characters challenges and life encounters were done at a realistic level if you were to put yourself in his ski boots. I get why people call it pretentious, its the same reason our movie industry is falling apart, if a film maker actually tries to convince people to look at things differently they immediately get defencive of the fact they may be doing something wrong the way they are living now. But the point of this movie, I feel, was to push past this barrier of caring about how you were in the past or present and instead, always strive to be better for the future. This message is definitely hidden beneath some enviormental warnings, mountain community angst (they have been there longer and thus believe they deserve to bask in its beauty more than the new guy on the hill who dresses and tries to act like them, but will never be like them) and the nonstop barrage of images which are used to excite the audience into feeling.

Overall, I would rate it a 9/10 as a film and 6/10 as a ski film. I am undecided as to which movie, All.I.Can. or Into the Mind, that i enjoy more. I think each one depends on the mood you choose to enter the film with. High octane energy with a need for inspiration or a more story centered plot that looks to not only inspire but change what gets you inspired.

So much more than a ski film
cipnrkorvo9 January 2015
"Into the Mind" sounds like a pretentious title for a ski film, but in reality it's flawless, and surprisingly moving, from the beginning to the end. It ups the artistic standard for sport movies to a whole new level, and takes your mind to a crazy voyage.

That means it's a great film not just for skiers but for everyone. All.I.Can (the first movie) was great for skiers, and had a nice message, but was far from being as artistic and universal as Into the Mind. The fact that there are almost no words (which you might not like if you have a short attention span) makes it all the more powerful.

On top of all this, the choice of music is just awesome! The way the soundtrack is edited, and the timing of the whole thing is perfect. Whoever made this soundtrack is a genius!

In short it's a flawless movie which I would recommend to anyone, even if you're not interested in skiing. I hope to see more artwork like this from Sherpas Cinema in the future.

This movie's got everything - yet delivers nothing
surfs_up197618 October 2013
Wow, was I impressed after the first five minutes...

Wow, was I overwhelmed after the first ten minutes...

Wow, was I speechless after the first 15 minutes...

and wow, was I bored after the first twenty minutes...

It never stops. It never comes to rest. It just keeps going and going and going. Between the tides, night and day, spring and autumn, summer and winter, life and death, breathe in, breathe out, jump up, jump down, vrooooom, it just never stops.

This is INSANELY good footage of, well, kinda everything. This is not a freeride movie, it's not a spiritual movie either, it's not an ongoing introduction clip of great athletes, it's not a permanent product placement film either. It's an ongoing flick about showing off how much budget was burnt. It is meant to feel inspiring - yet it quickly becomes tiring. Have I already already mentioned that it just doesn't stop? It keeps bombarding the viewer with probably the best footage ever assembled for a film with this, uhm, theme.

Everything is so perfect, ...for a moment. But its relentlessness to stay top notch in every second ruins the whole adventure. You can't get attached to anything because the film won't let you. It just speeds on in light speed and doesn't give you any insight on anything except pure awesomeness. In the end, after seeing and hearing all this expensive material you end up feeling kinda empty.

Also the "chapters" are very forced. In fact there are no chapters as there is no developing story. Instead we have very cryptic titles for the forthcoming music video (called "chapter"). It actually makes me sad. There was obviously so much potential, so much money, so many talented people - but in the end the film appears like a life long trailer of itself.

I was not disappointed
theresaroth15 December 2015
I sought out this movie as a result of seeing Meru and being fascinated with the three individuals Renan Ozturk, Jimmy Chin, and Conrad Anker. I like to follow actors, directors, etc and like to look at their repertoire. While I suggest an optional overview be made available to view before hand explaining what the viewer is about to see, I thought it was amazing in its cinematography. I am not a skier, snowboarder or climber and did not expect a ski movie so was not disappointed. I am an artist and appreciated what I could grasp of their visual representation. I only wish I knew more about the meaning and reason for the inclusion of the various elements I could not make sense of.

Into the Mindless
Ben-cherniavsky27 October 2013
If you are going to watch this movie make sure you do so in front of a large high def TV with the surround system on because its only redeeming features are the special visual and sound effects. This is really cool for the first five minutes but after 15 minutes it gets a little tiring and after an hour it is downright boring. Enough of the owls, waves, and old sherpa dude, this is supposed to be a ski movie! Where are the cool skiers and story line? This is purely a frivolous exercise in showing off CGI and I hope it doesn't set of a new trend of one-upmanship in the ski film world. It would be massively disappointing if the entire genre went in this direction of trying to provide some sort of deep extensional meaning to every scene. one other thing: the "chapters" to each scene are totally meaningless and nothing but a futile attempt to provide some context to a story that doesn't exist. In my opinion, if you want to watch a great ski movie pick up something from Matchstick Productions or, better yet, see Steep, which is a mesmerizing documentary on the history of big mountain skiing. That movie truly succeeds at getting Into the Mind of these daring athletes.

God bless the snow
barrett-8712922 December 2023
Pure skiing genius. Fantastic and incredible journey into what epic adventure and love for the sport truly mean. If you can watch it in slow Motion don't. Soundtrack is also awesome. Watch. Listen. Love and pray for snow and do it again. This is what every ski movie should be like. Red Bull is dumb. Take a lesson and make great ski movies like this, it's clear Thai movie taps into the souls of what skiing is and means to so may of us in the tribe of the winter gods , ULLR will come for you when the wind blows and the storm throws. Can you pass this knowledge to your young and continue the voyage to recognize uour place in the mountains.

Amazing film !
mamco_musician6 August 2017
Stunning imagery and great visuals. The story behind the movie is based on Renan Ozturk's life, and I, as a person who follows him and other people involved in this production, can truly relate to it. I really can not understand the claims of other reviewers for a luck of narrative and boring or missing storytelling. Very well worth your time!

So beautiful and soooo dull
mail-401711 February 2014
I have never seen such beautiful cinematography so utterly wasted. The first couple of minutes were sort of WOW, but with an edge of when is this thing going to actually start and after 20 minutes of the same it just got more and more annoying.

It's a pity but I really think this film will be used as an example in film school about how it is is possible to get the visuals stunning but bore and annoy your audience with lack of narrative.

After 20 minutes I started to feel insulted, what the hell does a Tibetan monk have to do with some skiers, one of the first lines in the film was "dude that looks gnarly' ...Oh please....

Please no more so mo CGI shots of eagles...I actually stopped watching after 30 minutes, I would have preferred half the production values and double the human interest and narrative.

North Face Propaganda at its best!
raf-gio20 March 2014
what a pile of BEEEEP my gosh I just wasted over an hour watching this North Face propaganda doc, the story was held by a razor sharp line.

Nonsense what a waste of good money, they should've quit and given the money to that poor sherpa that was living in that derelict place.

I am a sucker for outdoor docos but man oh man if felt like a bad CGI trip, tip to the Filmmakers story is of the essence, cgi and camera tricks are to supplement your story not to overshadow it. I rather have dug deeper in the characters then hear about how awesome risking their lives was. Have you ever stopped and though about the money you are wasting the mountain rescue community.

Save yourself the time and just watch the trailer.
shaylintrotman11 February 2014
I was really excited to watch this movie after seeing the trailer. After about 10 minutes I eagerly waited for when the movie would start. It turned out the entire movie was one long intro/trailer.

If I had one major complaint, it would have to be the storyline. This movie looks like a bunch of good footage that was edited into a movie with no prior forethought or planning.

The movie peaked when the one skier ended up in an avalanche and trailed off from there with the fake footage of him in the hospital. I couldn't help but lose interest when I see a guy supposedly on a ventilator while he's not actually intubated.

Like others said, it had so much potential with such great footage but ended up just being boring waste of time and money. Don't waste your 13 bucks. If you really must, rent it first and I'm sure you'll be annoyed enough to never need to watch it again.

Trevortrevors2929 January 2014
Someone actually gave 1 star and a harsh review on the movie because of the trailer for the movie. Keep in mind this person did not even watch the movie. I seriously wonder if im the only one completely, utterly and beyond annoyed by this moron. Go find the trailer site where people go to review the 2:00 previews and cant even take the time to watch/leave q fare review of a movie that people worked so hard on and has spanned continents just so 1 jagoff could take a big dump on the movie cause of

I apologize for my completely pointless off topic review of a even more pointless review !!

  • end rant

ps - I loved the movie and would recommend giving it a try even if the trailer wasn't appealing.
