Not terrible. Not good either.

Warning: Spoilers
Troy and Abed's friendship has always been a key focus of the show. Throughout various episodes we're shown that the two have an... let's say "otherworldly" friendship. For the most part, it's always entertaining, deep and interesting. Some moments even being incredibly touching.

That being said, while through the first 3 seasons I really liked Abed's character. Danny Pudi being incredibly talented and portraying the character with such surprising depth. This S4 version of Abed thus far has been so irritating. He's a shell of his former self. Somehow they made Abed more 1 dimensional than ever before.

I remember when the cameos on this show were more significant. Jack Black was a whole episode, same with Blake Clark back in S1. Unfortunately, there's 2 cameos in THIS episode and both of them are insignificant and... really have no reason to be there. FIRST. There's a couple brief scenes with Tricia Helfer. But the main cameo of the episode is Matt Lucas, playing a character who's so similar to this annoying version of Abed, I found it to be incredibly irritating. It's a bad performance all around, honestly.

All that out of the way. Annie has always been my favourite character, and I've always loved her dynamic with Jeff. Joel McHale and Alison Brie have such great onscreen chemistry, and Annie pretending to be Jeff's wife for the whole episode was actually sweet and funny.

S4 IS, and has always has gotten on my nerves. But unlike the first time I watched it. I know WHY S4 is the way it is now. Which is ultimately making this experience worse overall.

Different but good

I think it's pretty clear by now that Season 4 has slightly different priorities than the show had before, namely putting more weight on the sentimental parts. That may or may not sit well with you but that's where we are.

That being said, "Conventions of Space and Time" gets it down well. Not spoiling anything, Troy and Abed's relationship is a big focus of the episode and the issues are presented and resolved in a way only those two could while actually managing to be taken seriously. Overall the Episode features plenty of clever references, stays true to the characters and has plenty of heart. It's not a comedic powerhouse like Community at its best but it got several laughs out of me.

All in all, I'd rate it similarly to "Paranormal Parentage" in that it essentially includes many things I'm looking for in Community, it's just not quite up there with the show's highlights.

Oh, and you get to see Gillian Jacobs in her underwear. How's that for motivation?

Inspiring

Warning: Spoilers
The cameos of Luke Perry and Jennie Garth was incredibly inspired, probably one of the best in Community, and this is season 4 by the way which has been unfairly maligned by some in the Community community, with claims of "reverse engineering" and all.

I respect Dan Harmon and I'm glad he returned for season 5 and 6, but to a generation of viewers who became glued to Community after the original run, all the Internet slinging about season 4 is kind of passe.

Anyway, this episode was pure Community, with the Troy and Abed relationship stress-tested, Annie imagining she was Ms Winger (the payoff in the series finale), and of course the focus group.

Abed has become Sheldon Cooper

This feels more like The Big Bang Theory than Community. Love the first 3 seasons. 4 sucks. I know Dan Harmon came back for 5 and 6, so hopefully those are better.

Community Conventions of Space and Time

Warning: Spoilers
I must admit I do not watch Inspector Space Time so this episode did not make much on an impression on me. The best things about the episode where probably the Annie scenes. Pierce and Shirley scenes were quite bad and it is so sad to see Britta being completely forgotten and I can see Jacobs really trying to push through such bad material. Matt Lucas was quite funny in his scenes but ultimately he did not come off completely great to me. As I said I do not watch the show the convention was about so this episode did nothing for me and this show is becoming so hard to watch which is sad for me being such a huge fan of what the show once was.

EPISODE GRADE: C- (MVP: Joel McHale)
