Stars John Magaro and Leonie Benesch had no way of anticipating that their new film “September 5,” depicting how ABC handled coverage of the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, would be premiering at the Venice and Telluride film festivals so shortly after this year’s games in Paris, or at a time where all eyes are on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Going into production directly from last year’s Berlin Film Festival, where their respective films “Past Lives” and “The Teachers’ Lounge” both screened, the pair did not even know “September 5” would be coming off of a turning point in their careers, as both those films would go on to receive Oscar nominations. “It’s just coincidence,” said Magaro over Zoom. “It could have [premiered] in the winter and it would’ve been totally different.”

A hot sales title and potential Oscar contender is generating buzz on the festival circuit: Tim Fehlbaum’s tension-filled drama, “September 5.” If any studio feels like adding another worthy awards hopeful to its slate, this film could go far under the right guidance.
The film, which has received outstanding reviews at both Venice and Telluride, could make a significant impact given its timely and compelling story. Set on Sept. 5, 1972, it portrays the international hostage crisis involving the Israeli Olympic team, as it unfolded live on global television. However, the story is told from the perspective of the broadcasters. The period drama features a talented ensemble cast, including John Magaro, Peter Sarsgaard, Ben Chaplin and Leonie Benesch.
“September 5” is a taut, suspenseful thriller, and even if you’ve seen (and hopefully admired) Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” (2005), this retelling more than warrants its perspective, reminiscent of previous Oscar winners like “Spotlight” and “All the President’s Men.

A story that doesn’t seem fresh on paper — and one previously explored in Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” — may be a barrier to entry for some audiences. But Swiss director Tim Fehlbaum’s “September 5,” which takes audiences inside the airtight, under-air-conditioned ABC News control room as terrorists commandeered the 1972 Summer Olympics mere yards away, is a gripping, singular depiction that stands on its own merits.
In a tight 94 minutes, Fehlbaum pivots from the mayhem outside and solely toward the handful of sports broadcasters forced to improvise as eight Palestinian militants, known as Black September, took the Israeli Olympic team hostage. All 11 hostages were killed. Though going into this movie with that historical perspective doesn’t impede the tension onscreen — even if “September 5’s” psychological inquiry into the crisis and how it reshaped TV news, and how that very broadcast coverage may have spurred a nightmare to its worst possible horizon,...

Paramount’s Republic Pictures has acquired global sales rights – apart from Germany, Switzerland and Austria – to Tim Fehlbaum’s “September 5,” which stars Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin and Leonie Benesch, who broke out last year with the Oscar nominated “The Teachers’ Lounge.”
The film, which has Sean Penn as one of its producers, will open Venice Film Festival’s Horizons Extra competition section on Aug. 29. Sarsgaard won best actor at Venice last year for “Memory.”
“September 5” is set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, and follows an American sports broadcasting team that quickly adapted from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage.
Through this lens, “September 5” provides a new perspective on the live broadcast seen globally by an estimated one billion people at the time. The film “unveils the decisive moment that forever changed media coverage and continues to impact live news today,” according to a statement.

Exclusive: Ilker Çatak, whose The Teachers’ Lounge was nominated for an Oscar as Germany’s International Feature Film submission, completed shooting his new film Yellow Letters in Hamburg on Wednesday night, the production’s producer Ingo Fliess has revealed to Deadline.
Yellow Letters was filmed under strict security precautions because of what Fliess referred to as the film’s cultural and political “sensitive nature,” adding that “I want to protect my actors and crew, and I want to protect our working situation.”
But now with the film being shot and everyone leaving town today [Thursday], “I think we can just open the doors a bit wider,” Fliess said during a break from the Hamburg studio set. The film also shot in locations in the surrounding area, and briefly in Berlin.
Filming began in Berlin in the last week of May. Fliess said that Yellow Letters is about “a marriage under pressure.

Every summer, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites a deluge of new members to join its ranks. Since #OscarsSoWhite back in 2015, the Academy has moved away from its elitist tendencies and toward embracing younger and more diverse artists and executives from all over the world. This year’s invited class is no exception.
If the invitees all accept Academy membership, the total members will number 10,910 and voting members 9,934. And with the addition of the 2024 members, 35 percent of Academy members identify as women, 20 percent of Academy members are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 20 percent of Academy members are from countries or territories outside the U.S.
As usual, a slew of Oscar nominees and winners are gaining admittance to the club (71 Oscar nominees and 19 winners), including actors Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), costume designer Holly Waddington...
