Family sticks together

Warning: Spoilers
Norma has issues accepting that Deputy Shelby is involved in sex trafficking, and drives a car around in circles like a maniac, until Norman stops her. Dylan nervously tells his boss Gill what happened to his partner Ethan, but Dylan shockingly gets lauded for his actions. Dylan doesn't like the new partner that is assigned to him. Norma tells Emma not to call the FBI, because she doesn't want the police involved. Norma wants Keith Summer's belt that Shelby took, but Dylan thinks it would be a better idea if he & Norman went after it. Dylan tells Norman that they are gonna move into Dylan's new place, and that Norma's crazy. Shelby makes an unwarranted visit, and discovers the Asian girl (Jiao) in one of the rooms, and runs after her. Dylan accuses Norma of killing Norman's father. After the aftermath, Norma explains to Dylan what happened to Norman's father, and how protection of Norman is imperative.

I was excited for one sole reason when this show was announced. It had been far too long since anything at The Bates Motel commenced. I love anything Psycho related, but I still had my reservations about the show. Doing a prequel series to Psycho was a risky scenario, but you know what? I couldn't be any happier if I tried with the quality of this show. It has its imperfections, but what great show doesn't? I love the direction of Dylan's character at the moment. His vulnerable, yet take charge type of persona is a blast to watch. I still don't get why they had to kill off Ethan. I was really staring to get into the work relationship between Dylan & Ethan, and it just feels like they killed Ethan to add shock value. With each episode, they slowly build up Norma to be more & more twisted. I've explained this a bit in past reviews, but Norma's talk with Emma is something else. She likes Emma because of her handicap, and she knows Emma isn't that big a threat to Norman. "If I had been lucky enough to have a daughter, I'd want her to be exactly like you" OUCH! And you know what the amazing thing is? She tries to come across as sincere with it. That's cold, man. She also leaves Dylan hanging out to dry during a pivotal moment in the ending, yet embraces him at the very end. It's quite a feat that this woman can be so charming, yet so vicious at the same time. Bradley is conspicuous by her absence again in this one. After an auspicious start to her character, she has seemed almost invisible these past couple episodes. Even Emma doesn't have much to do in this one. If you're a die hard fan of the movies like I am, then you'll love the continuity. It's all starting to add up, as to why Norman is so messed up. I can't praise the acting enough. Everyone is perfect. Those that liked the Shelby character will probably be disappointed with the events that transpire in this episode. I enjoyed him quite a bit, but not sure how much farther they could have gone with him. The finale is very adroit and exciting. If you're an adrenaline junkie like I am, you'll be on the edge of your seat. The big revelation at the end is far from surprising, but it's still done very slickly. I really enjoyed how the events from the first scene at the beginning of the first episode, come full circle here. I won't say anything more than that, as I think I've revealed enough already.

Final Thoughts: This is a bit of a step down from the last couple episodes, but it's still an awesome episode. It definitely leaves you waiting for what is to come next. Are the Bates gonna become more of a cohesive unit? Will there be repercussions for them? This show is very good at making you want more. I would have liked more Bradley & Emma, but they remain pivotal characters as the series progresses. If you have loved the show so far, I can't see why you won't love this one as well.

The Truth Has Been Revealed!
gab-1471226 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Let it be known that the truth has been revealed! In this aptly-titled episode of Bates Motel, "The Truth" is one adrenaline-laced episode. The Chinese sex slave story, which many viewers found to be a silly subplot, comes to an abrupt end here. I love the interplay between Norman, Norma, and Dylan. Norma manages to become even crazier and I love the new protective attitude that Dylan developed for his little brother (but I am not sure if that is going to last long). Those who stayed to the end got treated with a bombshell that will affect the relationships of these characters moving forward. I will discuss that further in my last paragraph. This episode is briskly-paced, features great character development, and has some great action pieces.

Dylan is forced to confront his boss, Gil to recount the story of what happened to his partner. Gil lauds Dylan for his actions and rewards him with a new partner, Remo (a very juicy performance by Ian Tracey). Norma is having a hard time facing reality that her boyfriend actually was involved in a sex ring involving the Chinese girl, Jiao. Emma wants to get the FBI involved, but Norma vehemently refuses. Officer Shelby stops by the motel and discovers Jiao in one of the rooms with possible consequences for all characters involved. Dylan wants Norman to move in with him on the account of Norma being crazy and now he doubts Norma's recollection of how their father died. That is when Norma finally tells Dylan the truth.

As you see, lots and lots of crazy stuff happens. Whether you like the whole subplot with Shelby and the sex slaves, it seemingly ends with this episode. The last fifteen minutes are bonkers because it really turns into a horrifying cat-and-mouse game with Dylan and Shelby, with Dylan emerging as the victor. RIP Shelby (or not). Shelby was a fine character, if a little underdeveloped. He was played well by Mike Vogel. The shocking reveal where Norman killed Sam Bates unknowingly after he beat Norma is a nice, unexpected surprise. Now we truly understand why Norma acts the way she does. She needs to protect Norman. If he was to black out again, who knows who could be next. The episode does not feature much of Emma or Bradley at all, but this is an important, family-centric episode.

My Grade: A

Bates Motel: 'The Truth' (2013)

Rating: C

A&E's "Bates Motel" mini-series is basically going to be re-working PSYCHO IV. If you've seen that film then you know it shows what was going on with Mrs. Bates and Norman before the events in the original Alfred Hitchcock film. While that prequel wasn't perfect, it at least put a nice wrap-around story to the original film.

Episode number six follows a rather bad one and sadly this here isn't an improvement. This episode once again finds Norman, Dylan and Norma trying to make sure the past doesn't come back to haunt this. With this in mind, Dylan and Norman must try and free Norma from her relationship with the evil cop but things get even harder once the Chinese sex slave gets known by all. While all of this is going on Dylan once again tries to talk Norman into leaving with him.

I said the previous episode was incredibly stupid and sadly the stupidity continued here. You know, I'm the type of person who sticks with someone once he's started it. This could be going through an entire movie series even if I don't like the first few films. This is also true of this TV series because if I believed in walking away or turning something off then I'd probably walk away from this. Yes, the actors are all giving excellent performances but for the life of me I can't help but be annoyed with the various story lines that are currently going on. Yes, the stuff with the sex slave has been silly from day one and they had to end it somehow but what happens here is just downright silly. I'm sure it was meant to be dramatic but it just had me rolling my eyes. I'm not going to ruin the big showdown that takes up the final fifteen-minutes but I didn't think any of it worked and the big twist that happens at the end just wasn't all that shocking. After two rather boring and dumb episodes, the series really needs to come back with something strong or else it risks completely falling off the rails.

The Truth (spoilers)

Warning: Spoilers
EPISODE: THE TRUTH. SPOILERS

I'm really getting into Bates Motel. However this episode was terrible. Utterly terrible.

1. The belt they are trying to find that is so important and can incriminate them, they just toss in the water a few feet away from the boat they find it in. Any fisherman dredging or catching fish in some net or bay excavation would find this thing.

2. The cop that is violent and trying to kill the sex slave runs behind the motel,. they stand around and have a family discussion about who is living with who. A killer and abductor is running around the property.

3. norma and norman just sit in the car while things are happening in the motel. while a gunman is chasing after the other son. Would you just sit around or run like hell or try to run back in or anything?

Nothing I despise more than stupidity in writing. PEOPLE WOULD NOT DO THESE THINGS. It's the writer and director just manipulating to get where he wants it to go, forgetting that people wouldn't do that.
