The Hellboy franchise had seen several big-screen adaptations, and while Guillermo del Toro’s films were loved by fans, the last reboot failed to meet their expectations.

Many would be wondering if the famed horror filmmaker will try to make another Hellboy movie to close the saga to a trilogy, but comic book creator Mike Mignola believes del Toro won’t attempt to do so.

Brian Taylor’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the latest iteration in the action horror film series. The demonic character was first introduced in Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 film, which spawned a sequel in 2008. Despite their critical successes, he never got to make another follow-up installment.

The long-gestating sci-fi remake of Fantastic Voyage, which could pair James Cameron with Guillermo del Toro, is still on the cards, according to the Avatar director.
According to James Cameron, his long-gestating remake of Fantastic Voyage is still happening. That in itself is newsworthy given how long Cameron has been talking about this project. The filmmaker wrote a screenplay for the film decades ago, but in the wake of Titanic's success in 1997, he became transfixed with realising the alien world of Pandora onscreen and with the exception of a couple of documentary films, has only released two Avatar films in the quarter century since.
As far as Fantastic Voyage goes, Cameron’s plan has long been to produce the film, with Gullermo del Toro being the man to direct it. We’ve seen Cameron ‘godfather’ films before while working on the never-ending production of the Avatar films, not least...

Back in 2013, Guillermo del Toro revealed that Lucasfilm had approached him about directing the new entry in the Star Wars franchise (which turned out to be Star Wars: The Force Awakens), but he had to pass on it because he was too busy working on other projects. Four years later, he confirmed there had been further talks about him doing something in the Star Wars universe. Now, during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, screenwriter David Goyer (who worked with del Toro on Blade II) said that he and del Toro had been collaborating on a Star Wars project, but it ended up being shelved. Like several other Star Wars projects have been in recent years.
Goyer said (with thanks to IndieWire for the transcription), “I wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct. That was about four years ago. There was...

“Guillermo del Toro: Crafting Pinocchio,” the roving, ever-expanding, 8,000-square-foot exhibit dedicated to the art of making Guillermo del Toro and co-director Mark Gustafson’s meticulous Oscar-winning stop-motion film, has made its way from New York’s Museum of Modern Art to the Portland Art Museum in Oregon.
This past weekend, the three-time Academy Award winner came in person to the Rose City to accept a Cinema Unbound award from Pam Cut (the Portland Art Museum’s new-media-focused Center for an Untold Tomorrow) and later sit down for a relaxed chat with Pam Cut’s curator Amy Dotson. As usual, the director sounded off unguardedly about a range of topics, from struggling to get even his own passion projects greenlit to his commitment to animation and the threat of artificial intelligence looming over the creative community.

While Guillermo del Toro continues prep work on his forthcoming live-action feature Frankenstein for Netflix, with Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth attached, the director is coming off his Oscar-winning animation Pinocchio and it’s a form of storytelling we can expect him to solely move into in the future. “There are a couple more live-action movies I want to do but not many,” he said while at Annecy animation festival earlier this week. “After that, I only want to do animation. That’s the plan.”
As THR reports, the Mexican filmmaker didn’t mince words when it comes to how he thinks the studio animation system needs to change. “I believe you can make an adult fantasy drama with stop-motion and move people emotionally. I think stop-motion can be intravenous, it can go straight to your emotions in a way that no other medium can,” he said. “The three hits of Spider-Verse,...

Although he’s a lifelong lover of animation – particularly of the stop-motion variety – Guillermo del Toro has only made one fully animated feature film: Pinocchio. With widespread acclaim and even the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, Pinocchio marked a significant turning point in del Toro’s career…so much so that he’s ready to ditch live action altogether.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Guillermo del Toro outlined his objective of shifting solely to animation. “There are a couple more live-action movies I want to do but not many…After that, I only want to do animation. That’s the plan.” He added, “Animation to me is the purest form of art, and it’s been kidnapped by a bunch of hoodlums. We have to rescue it. Animation was his first love. And, if Guillermo del Toro has his way, it will be his last.
“There are a couple more live-action movies I want to do but not many,” the Pinocchio and Shape of Water director told the audience at the Annecy animation festival on Tuesday. “After that, I only want to do animation. That’s the plan.”
Del Toro, who said he first started making “what I thought was animation” when he was 8 years old using his father’s Super 8 camera, is following up his Oscar-nominated Pinocchio with another animated feature for Netflix: an adaptation of The Buried Giant, based on the grown-up fantasy novel by Nobel Prize-winning British writer Kazuo Ishiguro. “Pinocchio” co-directors Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson are going in separate but equally exciting directions. Both are continuing the partnership fostered with ShadowMachine Animation during the production of their highly lauded collaborative effort, which nabbed Netflix its very first Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
Announcing “Milepost 88,” a mystery series described as “sort of Coen brothers-esque,” Gustafson said, “Now that we’ve set a certain famous wooden boy loose on the world, I’m excited to launch another great adventure of my own in stop-motion animation.” The show will be set in Nevada’s Great Basin, where two brothers and gas station proprietors meet a traveler who has a strangely acute knowledge of their family’s history. A parallel story takes place in 1969 and follows a cosmonaut trying to become the first man to walk on the moon. Before teaming with del Toro on “Pinocchio,” Gustafson was Wes Anderson’s...

We know that Guillermo del Toro, whose stop-motion take on Pinocchio won Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards this past weekend, is planning to make a stop-motion adaptation of author Kazuo Ishiguro’s Nobel Prize-winning fantasy adventure novel The Buried Giant – but that project is still a couple years away. In the meantime, del Toro is going to make another live-action feature… and Deadline reports that his next feature may turn out to be an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, with Mia Goth (Pearl), Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), and Andrew Garfield being considered for lead roles.
According to Deadline, “Insiders caution that del Toro is still working on script and no formal offers have given to any actors, but sources add that he has has met with all three and each is on board to star in the film.” It’s believed that Goth would be playing “Doctor...

Exclusive: Animation studio ShadowMachine and director Mark Gustafason picled up the Oscar for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio on Sunday night and they’ve wasted no time setting up their next project.
The company, which was co-founded by Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico, and Gustafason are now developing Milepost 88, an animated mystery series.
Based on an original idea from Gustafason, the series follows two brothers, who run an old gas station deep in the Great Basin desert of Nevada, when their lives are upended by a passing stranger who unlocks a mystery involving their family history. The puzzle further unfolds in 1969 with the exploits of a reluctant cosmonaut as he tries to be the first man to reach the moon. As these parallel stories cross time and space, they reveal truths about love, ambition, and brake fluid.

Guillermo del Toro looked a little surprised on Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” when the host whipped out a photo of the Oscar winner with Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams on a shopping spree at a hobby shop – to buy model kits.
“I know this store because I used to drive by it all the time; this is a hobby shop in Burbank, right? And if you look through, you can see this is Guillermo with Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams,” Kimmel said of the images in the photos, then asking del Toro what the trio was buying.
“We get together now and then on Sundays; I paint model kits,” del Toro said. “I paint mostly cadavers and monsters; J.J. paints like things like the ‘Psycho’ house. Steven has his ‘Hamilton’ combo.”

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” was the big winner at the 50th annual Annie Awards, winning five categories in the award show that honors the best in animation. Fellow Oscar-nominees “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” won three and two awards, respectively.
“Pinocchio” led all films with nine nominations and went into the ceremony as a strong favorite to win the top award. The dark stop-motion take on the “Pinocchio” story also came into the ceremony at a time when its distributor, Netflix, has been dominating the Annies. Last year, its film “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” was nominated in eight categories and won all eight, including Best Feature, while the eventual Oscar winner “Encanto” settled for three awards in categories in which “Mitchells” was not nominated. Back in 2015, producer Scott Rudin was quick to snap up the rights to author Kazuo Ishiguro's just-published historical fiction The Buried Giant. The movie languished in development limbo but in a recent interview with The Telegraph about his Oscar-nominated Pinocchio, Guillermo del Toro mentioned that he was planning to adapt the book himself in stop-motion form as his follow-up. He's now officially confirmed that he's making the new movie for Netflix.
Ishiguro's book takes place in a mythologised fifth-century Britain, in which an old couple decide to undertake a journey to find the son they have not seen for several years. Hindering their seemingly simple quest, however, is a mysterious mist enveloping the land, causing amnesia in all its inhabitants. The trolls, ogres, dragons and giants are also something of a problem.

Mere months after “Pinocchio”s debut, Guillermo del Toro is already at work on his next animated film: an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s “The Buried Giant.”
Under his Netflix deal, del Toro will direct, produce and co-write the screenplay with “Matilda” scribe Dennis Kelly. ShadowMachine’s stop-motion studio, which also worked on “Pinocchio,” will be the production’s home base.

Right before his “Pinocchio” stop-motion film (probably) wins the Animated Feature Oscar this March, Guillermo Del Toro is setting up a new animated flick at Netflix. The “Shape of Water” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” filmmaker will direct “The Buried Giant,” an animated adaptation of “Never Let Me Go” writer Kazuo Ishiguro’s fantasy novel, for the streamer, IndieWire has confirmed.
Released in 2015, Ishiguro’s “The Buried Giant” is set in a version of England where King Arthur really existed but has long since died, and nobody is able to retain long-term memories. The story focuses on the relationship between Axl and Beatrice, an elderly couple who go on a journey to find a son they can barely remember.
