A Sweet Little Clichéd Romantic Movie!
nairtejas24 March 2013
An extension to Thattathin Marayathu, and more emotional & realistic movie is what Annayum Rasoolum is. Fahadh Faasil is fantastic in his role as a Muslim taxi driver while Andrea just fits in.

Probably the first Malayalam movie with a mouth-to-mouth kiss on-screen, the story is clichéd and said, read & published in all types of media, which talks about inter-caste relationship(s). Direction is beautiful and so is the music. Debutant director has left no stones unturned with this movie and yes, it is a very watchable movie with no cheap humor.

Songs are nice and catchy. Cinematography is plausible and every other film-making factor is met through. The supporting cast is very good and actually supportive in this brilliant narration. It induces emotions and if you love romantic movies, this one will surely bite you. Violence in Kerala is depicted in a sever manner and shows the reality - how the innocent & local people act/react at times. A heartening ode to the Kerala city life.

BOTTOM LINE: A very enjoyable movie with an unconventional climax and a somewhat extended screenplay to the usual happy endings. Nice work!

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

Language: Mediocre | Violence: Critical | Gore: Strong | Smoking, Alcohol: Mediocre | Mouth-Kiss: Mild | Nudity: Mild | Sex: No | Vulgarity: No

Good movie

The movie was good overall. The story looks very natural. I didn't like few elements in the movie, which is why I gave 8/10. Other than those, the movie is amazing.

A simple, slow, realistic movie told beautifully
pratheek_np2 October 2013
It was one of those movies that stay with you. Even a day after I watched, it would still make you think of the smallest scenes in the movie. That is the thing I love the most about such movies. There would be a small scene in it somewhere that would connect with you, and it would stay with you. That can happen only when the movie succeeds in generating that vibe in its audience. For different people it would be different scenes. Rajeev Ravi had a story in him begging to be told, and he said it in the most heartfelt way imaginable.

The general theme is the age old story guy meets girl of a different religion, falls in love, family finds out, all hell break lose. But as with such movies everything relies on the way you narrate the story, and it is in that, that Rajeev Ravi does the magic. Everything felt original, there were probably no other influences other than his own real life experiences. The genuineness of the situations and scenes shone through as though it was biographical, preserving the feelings of the smaller moments. Even the way he showed Kochi felt genuine. There was no effort to glamorize any part of it. The revival of 2 old classic songs were a perfect fit for the movie. They felt as though they were made for this movie.

Fahad Fazil steps into a different league with his acting. The guy looked every bit the character he was playing, he did not falter in even a single scene. On the contrary, in some of the scenes he was simply phenomenal. In my opinion, the last scene in which he runs into Anna's house and his reaction to the things happening there was so subtle and genuine that it was on an entirely different level.

If i had to pick a flaw it would have to be casting a heroine from a different language. I'm not rubbishing Andreah, she did a great job in almost every scene, but the real issue is that to minimize the awkwardness of lip syncing dialogs, she was given as minimum lines as possible. What results is that her character ended up being almost mute, some of it could be attributed to the depressed nature of her character but at other times it looked like something was missing to me. Otherwise what a movie!

As romantic as realistic
cinish15 February 2013
Some movies make you feel privileged as you watch them. This one presented many such moments as I got involved in the movie. While you dwell in the beauty of one beautiful moment, another beautiful moment comes along. Very realistic presentation and yet interesting and absorbing.

Andrea has done an exceptional job and to some extent overshadows Fahad in terms of acting. While the initial phase of the movie delivers in the unique story telling , soon the romance of the movie takes over. Very very real , very everyday, very relate-able.

We watched the movie on Valentine's day and it is indeed a great pick for a valentine's movie.Appreciate Fahad on his choice of movies.Wanted to watch it again today but the movie has changed and got to watch Fargo instead which was a good one in itself too.

The sights of Kochi has been nicely captured and as someone brought up in Kochi, I could relate to everything in the movie very well. The lighting in the movie is amazingly realistic. The first shot of the heroine presented as she gets in the way of the car felt real and interesting. The shot of Andrea against the candle prayer lights was very beautiful.

The story of the movie is amazing as well. Santhosh Echikkanam whose malayalam short stories has been enlightening when I used to do some reading, has matched himself scripting this one. Missed a second watch today unfortunately.Andrea keeps coming back as the show-stealer. Her performance has been accurate. The movie wins over Andrea though - good work Rajiv.

Masterclass in movie making, every film student should study it.
shabbe-497978 September 2022
Movie which ticks all the basic boxes of film making from story, screenplay, editing to choice of artists. The movie is so steady, allows the audience to getinto the mind of the characters. The use of images was exemplary, backwater as the backdrop worked wonders, it showed the tenderness of every character. No one is shown in black shade, they are shown as they are how real they are. Special mention to Andrea for living the character. Movie with high rewatch value. I have watched it like 5 times wholly, as bits many a times. Thanks for reading. Expecting this Rajeev ravi (rarest breed of film makers) magic again in Thuramukkham. Cheers.

The bard takes a bow, yet again, and how
sesht24 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Romeo and Juliet has been adapted many, many times, and it will go on. In spite of everyone knowing that art imitates life, this is perhaps a singular illustration of how life, repeatedly, across milieus, imitates art, and how no one has ever learned from it, ever.

A relationship between 2 lovers is theirs, and theirs alone. No one seems to 'get that', though, and this is another ode to how everyone else screws it up for the main protagonists, who want, nee, need, nothing more than to be left alone, with each other for company, for life.

In an era where movies with shorted runtimes are much appreciated, this one is almost 3 hours long, and takes it own time through each of the events that unfold. It lets every character breathe, and delves into their lives as well, showing how the fate that befalls each of the characters ultimately illustrates life itself, in the areas that it is shot in beautifully, and how the fate of one is always irrevocably linked, sometimes even intimately, from the ones around you, even if you want to be left alone.

It also depicts how certain acts, that remain on record, never get erased enough when one seeks second chances, and how one will always get dragged back to into something they thought they left behind, and perhaps never wanted to be a part of in the first case.

Annayum Rassolum doesn't have anything new to offer, doesn't have anything new to say. But what it does, in depicting life as it plays out, keeping the play as its template to do so, is worth being a part of for the course of its runtime. it is as good when it is following the trajectories of its supporting characters as it is when it allows the main leads to interact, and regard one another silently, as they used to in the good ol'-fashioned ways.

Most of the background score is soothing and mellifluous, along with 2-3 of the foreground tracks, which are also very apt, along with being equally, if not more, soothing. There are complete stretches sans the spoken word (but with sounds from the milieu at that time, sometimes interspersed with minimal score), with very minimal use of the background score too, that are wonderful to behold. Also, each track is timely and relevant, and doesn't drown out the plot. Ravi pauses them long enough to move the plot along, and lets them resurface appropriately. It is very rare to see that in action, and this is a very good example that other helmers, especially in the mainstream local milieu, could make a note of, and try to emulate.

Fahadh has been great in everything I've seen him in, and this is no exception in that aspect. He owns it, completely, and to me, he is the Sanjeev Kumar of this generation.

Andrea Jeremiah. Love her already. And what a voice! All she has to do is say, 'Pokkatte' softly (or however), and no one would be surprised at Faasil's character's falling for her. I've seen her in a mainstream flick before this, and hope she does as much work in front of the cam as she does behind it (vocals). Sunny Wayne acquits himself well, as do the rest of the cast, and I've seen many others pulling their weight in other flicks as well.

There is also an undercurrent of subtle irony running throughout, with a parallel tale, and it gets even more apparent in the narrative as the movie nears its eventual denouement, which might surprise those among us who know the bard's tale, and that IS a good thing.

I bought tickets to watch this on the big screen, but ended up missing it. Glad I bought the DVD. Recommend a watch, but mostly for those among us who're patient with their movies, and can watch this one in 1 stretch only (watching it with breaks interspersed will be doing the movie a disservice).

Phenomenal...A Movie that is so Realistic so Emotional
hasantariq-4010929 December 2023
Few months back started watching south indian movies and really love watching Malyalam and Tamil movies (OK Kanmani, Premam, Kannathil Muthamittal, Sita Ramam, 96 etc) Downloaded five to six films of Fahadh Faasil an decided watch to this movie first, without even any hint of the movie except that its a love story. The movie just ended.... and was unable to hold my emotions for a few minutes. Whosoever has ever been in love or with a pure heart can't stop his/her feelings. A love story (Romace / Drama) that is so realistic ,so emotional, and so close to your heart. Hardly a few romantic dialogues or a scene between the couple, But even then it melts your heart and leaves an ever lasting impact; an Excellent love story with superb performances and music. Both Fahadh and Andrea performed so naturally that it just appeared to be happening in real. Love this movie and would highly recommend it. This is a movie which can be seen many a times.

Insipid Love story plot
ilakkusatish27 July 2020
There is subtleness in narrating love and this story has actually been a dud of all. Fahad's expressions were all over the place like deadwood, found like he was trying to romanticise on occasions which needed innocence or other emotions. Jeremiah too was found wanting in second half while her role of nearly mute lover for circumstances is well played. Its highly over rated movie and without comparing with other movies this is just way to simple. its a sadaa dosai.

Boring, disappointing.
abhijitkulkarni-8914722 April 2024
As far as the movie goes, boring rudderless movie. It isn't clear what the director wants to show , where it is headed and he mish mashes so many things. Doesn't tie them up properly by the end either.

That is just plain decent from Fahadh as Rasool.

The female lead is such a weak character that I felt annoyed. The actress Andreah Jeremiah is below par, so few expressions in the movie (anyway had less dialogues).

There are other issues in the film like why Rasool delays talking to Anna for first time so much. Initial hesitation is fine, shyness, fear and all that. But he delays so much. Then after talking, why he choses to steal her phone number instead of just asking her or someone else etc.

Support cast is competent. Music goodish, photography ok.

Maybe couple of scenes in the movie that made me go, ok, this is something very good. Nothing more.

Yes, movie is grounded/realistic, but it is not a good one at all IMO. Not even close. If you want a real good grounded, realistic love story movie, I'd suggest you watch Lunchbox or 96 for example.
