Musical K-Drama in College Setting
nishera31 May 2021
Given how few K-Dramas there are about musicals, this one has held it's value surprisingly well despite being made 10+ years ago (and that's no small feat, considering that the Asian film industry has progressed at breakneck speed over the last 10-20 years).

Aside from the musical aspects, the plot was basically classic K-Drama, featuring all the usual suspects and cliches. On the bright side, the story did skip past most of the contrived angst so popular in stories of that era, which was a relief. Also the love/performance rivalries never got too out of hand (oftentimes rival characters are absolutely vicious), with mature and positive resolution all around.

The featured songs were decent but repetitive, also there were some noticeable issues with the audio editing in general. However overall this was a good show, particularly if you enjoy stage productions and are a fan of PSH (it's cute to see her younger self). Recommended!

ROMANCE RATING: * * * 7/10. While I love PSH, and she and JYH had great chemistry together, there was little physical romance between them in this show. A few hugs, a couple forehead kisses and 2-3 kiss scenes which were held to the "brief peck" standard typical of K-Dramas of that time. So if you require a passionate kiss to feel rewarded for your emotional investment, be aware you may be left wanting.

Showcase for musical talents of Jung Yong Hwa and Park Shin Hye
phd_travel24 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Anyone who watched and enjoyed You're Beautiful will want to check out this light college rom com with lots of singing. The songs are tuneful and sung by the actors. The songs are repeated too many times though. Members of CN Blue like Kang Min Hyuk gets to show his skill as a drummer and lead singer Jung Yong Hwa gets to showcase his multi talents. Park Shin Hye doesn't have a very strong voice but her charm is in full force in this series.

The weakness is in some dated plot elements to create drama. The obstacles are a little bit contrived like grandpa's opposition and the pushy mother cancelling the whole performance because her daughter can't sing. The scandal of the hotel is okay though - quite in fitting with the plot. I didn't like the obstacle in the last 2 episodes about his injury. It felt frustrating and stupid. But that is typical of some K dramas from 10 years ago.

Loved it
leahcubed27 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was really excited about this since I watched "You're Beautiful" with these two. In "You're Beautiful" this was the romance that didn't happen where you like the second guy as much or more than the male lead. Although they play different characters it was still very nice to see these two together. Made up for the small sadness I felt that they did not get together in "You're Beautiful". Park Shin-hye is just fun to watch she has played a nice girl in both movies I have seen her in and her singing voice is just beautiful. In this she plays Lee Gyu-Won who is steered by circumstance into playing Korean traditional instruments and although she loves them she also dreams of something bigger. Chance circumstances lead her and the male lead Lee Shin (played by Jung Yong-hwa) together to compete and to play in a Broadway level 100th anniversary performance for the university. The Director sees something special in Gyu-won and encourages her to challenge herself into more visible roles. Lee Shin is the lead singer of a popular male band, The Stupid, and is very cold, arrogant and aloof. He is also in love with one of the female professors and it seems does not even look Gyu-won's way other than to torment her as his errand slave for losing a bet between them. I loved the backdrop of the music school. It was fun to watch all play and perform. The love stories are very sweet and believable. This is one of my new favorites and I would highly recommend it to anyone and it is a much watch if you have seen and enjoyed "You're Beautiful." I would say "Watch "You're Beautiful" first then definitely watch this. The 15 episodes of this 2011 South Korean drama will fly by and you will enjoy being immersed in their world.
