Nyaruko-san: Another Crawling Chaos
Tweekums21 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Mahiro Yasaka is an ordinary Japanese school boy who is rescued from a strange monster by a girl called Nyaruko; she isn't any girl though; she is Nyarlathotep... one of the deities of the Cthulu mythos! She claims that she is part of the Space Defence Agency and she is there to protect him! Soon they are joined by Cthuga and Huster, two more Cthulu deities from the SDA. Much to Mahiro's dismay they all end up living at his house. Over the course of the series they deal with numerous demonic monsters; that isn't Mahiro's only concern though... Nyarko keeps throwing herself at him and Hester, who is male, also has an interest in him; Cthutha however only has eyes for Nyarko.

As you might have surmised this is a comedy; and a fairly good one at that. I didn't think a comedy anime where the characters are taken from the works of Lovecraft and look like school children would work but it does. Mahiro is a decent protagonist but it is Nyarko who provides most of the laughs with her desire for Mahiro and her love of Earth culture... especially that deemed to offensive for export into space! We don't see anything offensive though.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

One failure work, but it does have advantages.

Warning: Spoilers
Well, typical XEBRC style. Basically it's "one adolescent beauty falls in love with one normal school boy, then they went on adventures". If you have watched"Nadesico",you will probable comprehend what I mean.(After all,"Nadesico" is also one XEBRC production.)It's ironic that many of us are actually addicted to this kinda anime.

The Cthulhu mythos? Well, I guess it completely humiliate Mr. Lovecraft's masterpiece. From the female leading role"Nyaruko",which was from "Nyarlathotep",to the amusement park"R'lyeh",and many meaningless Cthulhu neta. I couldn't imagine how those true Lovecraft fans would comment on this anime. I'm not a Cthulhu fan myself, but I don't think simply copying other's ideas is a good idea.

As for the plot? Well, not bad,but obvious not good enough, even for a romantic comedy. I don't this kinda style would really appeal to the otakus in the 21st century. Episode 6 in the second season was totally a failure. Why do I have to watch NTR plots in the romantic comedy? Too many meaningless netas were used in this anime. This is painful to those who didn't know the netas(include myself). This also brings difficulties to the sub team. We know that this is not XEBRC's problem since the original novel has more netas. Mr. Aisora should be the one to blame.

Character design? Well, this is one adventage. Both Nyaruko and Mahiro's design are successful. Those costars' design are also fit in this anime, especially when compared to the illustration in thr novel. Good job,XEBRC!

A happy ending would be also an advantage? The OVA "Nyaruko F" was actually out of my expectation. Although I know this is just the normal romantic plot, yet I still feel moved by the touching scene.

Thus,in the anime,Mahiro's attitude to Nyaruko was changing with time goes by. If you have watched the novel, you'll feel it. I do think Mahiro have the same point as Kurisu Makise in the "STEINS;GATE" since both of them are tsundere.

The Ctuultu mythos with sci-fi theme would be an interesting concept, but why Mr. Aisora makes it a mess? Take one single episode for example,Nyaruko wore one pair of sunglasses and said,"It's not all over!"I know that's from gundam zeta, but what's all this meaning? Gintama also likes to use neta such "Project A" by Jackie Chan. But the latter looks obviously better.

Anyway,if you are one Lovecraft fan,I didn't recommend you to water this anime. If you like this XEBRC stylish works, this anime may be the best for you. The soft-sexual plot may be appealing to some other people. BTW,this is R15.

worth it if you like lovecraft... kinda

Very interesting premise, and one that's not usually aesthetically touched on in anime very often. Seeing lovecraft (like actual cthulhu mythos stuff) in an anime is a welcome surprise, but the material really tries to lean hard away from what actually made a lot of those stories any good. The cosmic horror aspect of it all is mostly lost, except for jokes here and there (which granted are pretty funny), and the grotesque and strange monster/deity designs of the lovecraft world rarely make an appearance. The characters are pretty one-note, but it's an absurd comedy so it mostly works. Would've been a little nice to see them fleshed out more, as it would make Mahiro's change of heart towards Nyaruko a little more believable. Really catchy theme though, and Kuko is based. Would watch again maybe.

A very funny anime
I loved the characters.

I like the way they play with the fourth wall.

Each character has their role and the vast majority are very charismatic and with good jokes. Some of my favorite characters were Kuko, Hasuta, Mahiro, Yoriko Yasaka and Tamao Kurei.

But without a doubt the character that steals the show is Nyaruko San, a super fun, flirtatious and cute character. I find interesting the idea that they use Lovecraft's literature to explain the motives of the characters, in conclusion super entertaining and very nice if what you are looking for is a romantic comedy story with touches of action and science fiction. In the same way I consider it an entertaining and relaxing story.

Lovecraft fan thru and thru

I started reading Lovecraft books when I was 12-14ish. I enjoy the depictions of deities aged how accurate it is despite them being anime magical girls (which is the joke that even the most hideous and terrifying beings can be cute in anime). My only issue is that there isn't more of it. The ending felt incomplete and I wanted to see more Lovecraftian deities fleshed out. Like they talked about Azathoth but no anime boy Azathoth.
