The Mayor and the Magician

Warning: Spoilers
The average amazing Father Brown mystery but this time they do a little dive into the back story of one of Father Brown's flock. The results of which were very interesting, I'm sure they will explore that relationship more in the future, and am gladly anticipating that.

It's electrifying

Warning: Spoilers
Quite a few five out of 10 user reviews for this episode, The Mayor and the Magician, which is the penultimate episode of season one. Anyway, the Polish angle is quite emotive, and it's a shame that Kasia Koleczek as Susie Jasinski didn't return for season two. Hopefully there was no racial bias if you know what I mean.

Anyway, here you have a mayor who is not exactly all above board, and he suffers death by electrocution. Anyway, Father Brown manages to solve the mystery, with motives about backstreet butchers and the sadness of that.

Anyway, Father Brown makes for good daytime viewing for sure.

Saved by Sorcha Cusack.

The loathsome Mayor William Knight is electrocuted on stage as he makes his speech to the local Village fête.

It's a fairly bog standard mystery, not bad really, but the issue I have is with the characters, they're all rather unappealing. The Mayor is overly repulsive and almost a caricature, the wife although intelligent is almost as unlikeable, even Matilda is fairly awful too. Overall the characters are fairly poorly realised.

Sorcha Cusack truly does save the episode, The best element is the Magician and Mrs McCarthy story, it was funny and sad, but we got to learn her first name, Bridget! Mrs McCarthy's clash with Lady Felicia was very well played out too. I liked Father Brown's dart playing too, Mark Williams is a funny chap.

Possibly the weakest so far, the regulars are great, but the actual mystery and supporting cast don't quite come up to the mark.

Disappointing. 5/10

The Mayor and the Magician

Warning: Spoilers
This is not the best episode of the first series mainly because lot of the characters were so horrid.

Mayor William Knight is such a repulsive character. It is no surprise that he was murdered at a fundraising fete.

The only surprise was that there were so few suspects. The whole village had good reason for killing him as he planned to profit from a secret land deal he made.

Knight was electrocuted and his wife is suspected when Inspector Valentine finds some incriminating evidence in her handbag.

Father Brown thinks this might had been planted in the handbag.

If it was not Knight's wife then it could only be his female chauffeur. It is clear that both her and the mayor had a thing going once.

The mystery was something that needed several rewrites and a few more suspects.

Much better was the character piece relating to Mrs McCarthy and her errant husband. He is the conjurer at the village fete.

At a fête to raise funds for a Polish school unpleasant mayor William Knight is electrocuted by a microphone. Valentine arrests his long suffering wife Eleanor after a screwdriver is found in her handbag but there are plenty of other suspects, including his young daughter and the secretary he sacked after their affair was discovered, whilst he was also accused of bribery and corruption. As Father Brown solves the mystery a magician at the fête turns out to be the husband, presumed dead, of his housekeeper Mrs McCarthy, who walked out on her decades earlier. Now dying he wants to return to her but she refuses him.

Standard episode with Mrs McCarthy story taking centre as the main interest- love how Lady Felicity cares for her and their relationship might seem heady, but that's just a facade. The killer didn't come as much surprise, though the way the obnoxious mayor died was shocking.
