CBS has named the four helmers selected for its 2019-2020 Directors Initiative. Now in its 16th year, the initiative provides a platform for experienced directors to gain access to showrunners, executives, managers, and agents, as well as the opportunity to shadow CBS Television Network and CBS Television Studio shows throughout the year.
This year’s class includes Shaz Bennett, Jill D’Agnenica, Leena Pendharkar, and Ian Truitner. All are drama directors.

The program helps directors develop strategic objectives aimed at cultivating meaningful relationships with industry professionals that are essential to getting hired.
“The access provided through our Directors Initiative gives television directors valuable first-hand exposure to the CBS Television Network’s episodic directing process,” said Tiffany Smith-Anoa’i, Executive Vice President, Entertainment Diversity, Inclusion and Communications at CBS Entertainment. “Our participants spend quality time on set and begin fostering constructive connections with showrunners, producers and executives with the objective of...

Earnestness doesn't fully excuse the low-key schmaltz peddled by Life Inside Out, the type of indie that your mother might politely describe as "touching" if she could manage to stay awake for its entirety. Produced partly thanks to a Kickstarter campaign, and co-written by star Maggie Baird, director Jill D'Agnenica's modest film details the efforts of Laura (Baird) to manage a busy household in which her husband and two older sons spend most of their time berating and/or neglecting youngest kid Shane (Finneas O'Connell), whose plight is the result of his perpetually morose attitude. O'Connell embodies Shane with bland troubled-teen dourness, though his character's mood slowly changes once Laura — who doesn't get much satisfaction from hanging out with a ...

Life Inside Out (2013) Film Review, a movie directed by Jill D’Agnenica, and starring Maggie Baird, Finneas O’Connell, Lori Nasso, David Cowgill, Roscoe Brandon, Orson Ossman, Patrick O’Connell, Joe Hart, Goh Nakamura, Emma Bell, and Emily Jordan. I certainly see the appeal of Life Inside Out by first time director Jill [...]

This year's Best Original Song Oscar race hasn't really achieved much lift-off. Of course, the contenders have been obvious. "Lost Stars" from "Begin Again" may well be the best of them, though "Everything is Awesome" from "The Lego Movie" certainly has its punch-drunk fans. Elsewhere, though, there are a few popular artists in the mix. John Legend and Common put together a hell of a track for "Selma" called "Glory." Lana Del Rey is back in the mix with the title track from "Big Eyes." Coldplay even wants to, uh, play, with "Miracles" from "Unbroken." The Academy announced the list of 79 eligible contenders Friday afternoon, and many of them you've seen outlined clearly in our dedicated Contenders section for the category all season. Let's take a closer look… Animated players "The Book of Life" and "The Boxtrolls" each have a pair of ditties and "Big Hero 6" has one as well.

And so it ends…
Sunday marked the close of the 15th annual Port Townsend Film Festival. As Annie Hall slouched across the massive outdoor theater screen, citizens and visitors adjourned for another year, sated on film, food and abundant sunshine. Whether there will be a breakout film from this year’s line-up remains to be seen, but Amira & Sam (which won the Audience Choice Award for Best Narrative Feature), Laggies and Life Inside Out appear to be the likeliest candidates. Each is smartly written, confidently directed and wears its unapologetic heart on its tear-stained sleeve.
Several films distinguished themselves by taking home Festival honors, as well. The Best Feature Documentary Awards went to Return of the River (Audience Choice) and The Ballad of Shovels and Rope (Festival Choice). The Invisible Collection also claimed top honors as the Festival’s Best Narrative Feature. The Festival selection committee is to be commended...
