Tara, Abhishek & Rajpal Find A Way, But The Screenplay Doesn't
SAMTHEBESTEST15 November 2023
Apurva (2023) : Movie Review:

Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's crime thriller, Apurva, stars Tara Sutaria, Abhishek Banerjee, Rajpal Yadav, Dhairya Karwa, Sumit Gulati, and Aaditya Gupta. We have seen the Anushka Sharma starrer "NH 10," which had a similar story to Apurva, but the latter is based on a true event and is more about the leading lady than a couple (like the former). This genre of escape thriller/drama needs extreme detailing in the screenplay and storyline, which Apurva lacks. On a positive note, all the actors have done a brilliant job, and their efforts are enough to make this one a pretty average, decent watch.

In Chambal, a group of four hoodlums: Jugnu (Rajpal Yadav), Sukha (Abhishek Banerjee), Balli (Sumit Gulati), and Chota (Aditya Gupta) loot people and kill them. While overtaking a luxury bus, Jugnu is abused by a driver, and then he stops the bus, shoots the driver, and kills the conductor/cleaner. Sukha and Balli enter the bus and start looting jewellery and clothes from passengers, and one of them is Apurva (Tara Sutaria). Apurva is receiving a call from her boyfriend, Sid (Dhairya Karwa), who speaks badly to Sukha over the call. To seek revenge and be all lusty over Apurva's beauty, Sukha and his gang members kidnap her and take her to a deserted place. The four of them plan to rape Apurva and then kill her the next day. Will Apurva's brave efforts be enough to find an escape from these four violent and ruthless people?

Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's Apurva is fine story to pick up for a thrilling and intense ride, but like I said, this genre needs a sharp screenplay. Apurva is far from that. It's not sharp, and that's okay, but it's too thin and blurry. The screenplay is scattered, and that's why the entire build-up collapses on the ground. A girl cannot run away despite having so many opportunities; she can see through a brick wall, but not run away; she can find a hideout at the same place instead; she even knows where the car is parked; she can use a weapon whenever she wants and it can disappear as per situations; the fellas with guns will not shoot the girl; one slap is enough to make a girl highly unconscious, but several falls can still leave enough power for her to run; a man can be alive even after falling into a deep well, but one rock hit is enough to make him quite and how Apurva did it, don't ask; the man with injured legs can catch up with the car and then suddenly lie down and beg for his life on the railroad. There are so many illogical movements, and nothing actually grips you. That's where Apurva falls, and it falls flat. It doesn't matter how many positive points the film has; the screenplay is so messy that it doesn't give the film any chance to recover.

Since her debut, Tara Sutaria has always been a hero's heroine, who would do romance, grand makeup, glamorous outfits, and sweet talk. With Apurva, she finally enters the "actor's" zone, and HOW! In the first scene and flashback romance, she is the same Tara you have seen in previous films. But she had to look beautiful so that the physical transformation would make more sense. It works. This is her best performance so far, and I think she should continue doing such meaty roles where people would be more attracted to her acting than just her beautiful face. Abhishek Banerjee is solid again, and this was a tailor-made role for him. He fits so well into everything. Rajpal Yadav is another great performer here, despite having fewer dialogues. This man has been so underrated for years, and all people remember of him is comedy. Please be sensible; he is way bigger and better than that. Sumit Gulati's accent is fantastic, Aditya Gupta looked fine, and Dhairya Karwa is decent in his supporting role.

Another good thing about Apurva is its cinematography. Anshuman Mahaley gets all the credit for that. Still, I think a few scenes could have been shot in a better way. For instance, in that well scene, when Tara is running, she slips suddenly and realises that there is a well at her feet. The camera takes it from her feet; instead, it should have started from the deep well, in the dark, and then come to the surface. The surprise element would have worked better this way, in my opinion. The music and background score are forgettable. The editing is tight as the film doesn't have a long runtime and doesn't have any loo breaks apart from that at one romantic song. Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's direction is very notable in some scenes. Apurva and Chota crawl on the floor, all in mud, and then she hits him hard-such a raw presentation of the situation. Apurva's marking system and hideouts also seemed very smart; only that they were predictable but very well presented on the screen. It's the screenplay that fails to live up to the standards of direction, acting, and storyline. It's good that the film is coming on OTT since the subject hardly had any appeal for big-screen audiences. As a whole, Apurva is a promising film and could have been a much better film, but the screenplay doesn't fit right here. Yet, you can watch it for the good performances by Tara Sutaria, Rajpal Yadav, and Abhishek Banerjee.

Not as expected
kainatrc26 November 2023
When the trailer of this movie was out,I had very high expectations. But watching it made me feel the quote very real that "expectations hurts,"but even if my expectations were low,I must say that something was missing may be the music part. The music didn't match the scary or tensed situations. This movie is inspired by true story but I don't doubt about it and another movie was released with same outline few years back starring Anushka Sharma. Tara Sutaria did very well. Her role in the movie very commendable. She played her part very well. But something went missing and the movie was not engaging. At many places everything was predicted that made to lose interest in watching the movie. If you have not watched Anushka Sharma's NH 10 then you would definitely love it else you would find the movie very predictable. Streaming exclusively on hotstar.

Established the plot well but falters towards the end
Biswas_16 November 2023
Apurva is the story of a girl named Apurva who gets kidnapped by a gang of four gangsters and how she manages to escape from their clutches is the main story . It basically carries the NH10 flavors in it.

Apurva starts off extremely well. The four gangsters played by Rajpal Yadav, Abhishek Bannerjee, Sumit Gulati and Aditya are introduced as goons who enjoy watching people dying, screaming in pain , crying etc . A sense of terror is well established at the start. This continues for the whole of first half when Apurva gets kidnapped.

However, from the second half onwards, the film dips. Not only does it become a bit repetitive but it feels Apurva is managing to outfox the goons pretty easily. Repetitive because it just involves a hide and seek game in one location (which gave me Honeycomb maze vibes from Takeshi's castle) and it seemed the goons don't put forward the best effort possible to search.

The goons also don't pose any major challenge to Apurva and hence Apurva manages to outfox them pretty easily. This was something i did not like at all. I felt the challenges posed could be greater.

Like I said performance wise everyone including Tara Sutaria have done a great job. In fact this is the first time Tara gets to feature in a proper meaty no-nonsense role. It's definitely visible that she's worked hard for the role of Apurva which genuinely needed some grit.

There's a lot of gory scenes in the film. The shots taken of blood and flesh were pretty disturbing.

Dhairya as Apurva's finance is a waste. At the end you will realise he's there for nothing. His parts in the present timeline could have easily been chopped off.

Overall, a decent one time watch. A better second half treatment could have made the film to NH10's level.

Thriller
kkppd17 November 2023
A thriller movie in which heroine is hero , faces different types of hard situations, but wisely or accidentally , is out of that danger . What Would be next & what will happen to her , would she be able to save herself & her prestige, are the questions in mind of viewer of the movie . Fortunately she wins & a happy ending . Situation , location , surroundings , night scenes of chambal valley , a well , police behaviour make that all real . The heroine , all the Villains have acted well according to their role & situation . Overall a good movie & i couldn't take break in between , till , it ended . Best wishes to the director & actors .

Crispy & Vibrant...!!!
PANDIAN12062116 November 2023
With nothing new to offer this thriller is purely depends upon the screenplay that Keeps u going at a study place... Nikhil had been backed up with pretty good technical team where camera work is a major asset that captures the soul of raw & rustic plains of northern parts of India (Chambal),while the lighting during the night shots are a pleasant view to watch out... Tara sutaria might not be the best of her career but does justify to the role undoubtedly... Abhishek and Rajpal does a fantabulous job of typical freaks and are unpredictable with their wilder behaviour.... Overall a good popcorn movie to passout.

Incomplete Story - I'm Numb - Maybe the writing was off but actors did well
FanOfSuperHeroes18 November 2023
The trailer looked really nice. So, I decided to watch this movie. After completing this movie, I am numb. Meaning, I am neither happy, nor angry. The movie story went straightforward. We already knew what was going to happen to the main character as it was already shown in the trailer. I just wanted to see the way the character would do that. The writing was really bad. However, it will keep you engaged for most parts. The ending was incomplete. The writer didn't told us about the aftermath of the incident after the lead character returns. Like, they didn't revealed anything about the goons, no actions were taken against the people who hired them, or they couldn't take the actions, in the story of the movie, none of that was mentioned. So, this is an incomplete movie and I felt numb after watching that. However, I'm a fan of Rajpal Yadav and he did really well. One of the guy in the movie with the glasses and beard, the final villain also did great performance. So, that it, 6 out of 10.

B grade copy of NH10
max_11116 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a second hand copy of NH10. All the actors tried really hard to create a difference but all in vain.

Starting was somewhat good but than all went downhill. Yes Tara did a great job with the bogus script she was provided with.

So, we are meant to believe that a city girl somehow manages to outsmart four professional criminals.

In reality she wouldn't even had survived 10 minutes in this situation. But it was all the opposite here. Really?

Are we the audience so dumb that these film makes can throw anything at us and expect us to digest it.

I slept through the middle part as the story was not moving anywhere.

Boring. Not recommend!

Menacing!
tulsi-das-khan15 November 2023
This was indeed a surprise package. I was expecting a shoddily done half baked crime thriller movie which sort of has been the 'speciality' of Disney HotStar in recent times. But luckily this wasn't the case with Apurva. First of all, the cinematography of the movie is top notch. It has been shot on real locations and the scenes are brilliantly shot. Even the BGM is good, it's not overdone.

But the main reason why this was such a good watch was because of the three menacing characters played by Abhishek Banerjee, Sumit Gulati and of course Rajpal Yadav as 'Jugnoo'. They ooze terror throughout the movie. It was great to see Rajpal Yadav doing a dark and negative role and he aced it. He's such a versatile actor. Also the movie keeps you on the edge of the seat throughout but the story and the plot is similar to NH10 starring Anushka Sharma.

Some of the negative aspects are continuity issues in some place, the actors not speaking in the chambal accent and few stretched scenes here and there.

Overall a good watch. Highly recommended.

Tara Sutaria's best performance till date.
nadkarnisumeet27 November 2023
Apurva review :

"Mera Naam Apurva Hai" is her clap-worthy concluding line to one of her abductors.

Indeed, this is Tara Sutaria's finest performance till date and the titular film, which premiered directly on Disney Hotstar this mid-week, will hopefully give her career the much needed boost!!

Tara plays the about to be married Apurva, who gets abducted from her bus on the Chambal highway. The four sadistic robbers, who take her away just to add some fun element to their night out, don't know whats in the offing for them though!!

As such, Apurva's plot is pretty much predictable like any survival drama...but it's the execution and the acting department that works in its favour. The film's crisp pace at just one hour thirty five minutes run time is another plus. I was actually reminded of Anushka Sharma's far superior NH10 (2015) during some chilling moments. And that's a compliment!!

Expectedly, Abhishek Banerjee and Rajpal Yadav are first rate as the uncouth rabid criminals, who derive perverse pleasure in killing humans -male or female!! Particularly, you will just loathe Banerjee's character as he cares two hoots for even his own gang members...

The surprise revelation of Apurva is but of course Tara Sutaria, who makes most of the golden opportunity she gets to shoulder an entire movie on her own and comes up trumps at the end of it. Atta Girl!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

Predictably disappointing
jatinsingh-5980219 November 2023
Apurva is a senseless film that hardly merits a review. It follows the clichéd formula of a predictable masala movie, with absurd plot elements. The protagonist, Tara Sutaria, effortlessly dispatching kidnappers one by one, reappearing mysteriously to lure and kill them, defies all logic. Another character's kidnapping serves only as a device for the protagonist to use a cellphone. Except for Rajpal Yadav's acting, the performances were mediocre. This movie is best avoided; I grew bored within 15 minutes, resorting to fast-forwarding to reach the end! Those who consider this as a good thriller should watch any of the 'Crime Patrol' episodes on Sony, a much better option to kill time.

What a movie I just watched!!!!
mihirsrivastava-1242214 January 2024
I am one of those person who hardly write reviews of films but this movie Apurva, omg I just dont have words for this masterpiece.

The direction the sound the screenplay what could you ask more ??

Special mention to ofcourse Tara Sutaria Ji, Dear Tara I have been seeing you since Suite life of Karan & Kabir but this time You KILLED IT. Those expressions were so real that I got scared, angry, frightened and what not watching you portraying chracter of Apurva.

Also Rajpal Ji & other goons actors have made sure I absolutely hate them watching them on screen.

Thankfully Bollywood is changing to such type of content, for such movie I'm ready to pay 5000 to watch such things in theater.

Rewatch NH10 if you were convinced to watch this movie by its trailer
Itsnavneeet15 November 2023
I kept getting disappointed while I watched this. I don't know how they created a little hype for this by its trailer and promos, those scenes look big in trailer but has no meaning in the real movie. Abhishek Banerjee outshines everyone in this even though the writing is extremely poor. I've never watched any movie of Tara Sutaria and I didn't like her overacting in this movie. Rajpal Yadav tried to bring a change in his character through this but failed. Some scenes in the movie made me laugh for its stupidity. I've rated it 2 for the trailer and if you really wanna watch then go for NH10. Now I understand why NH10 was so good. I had to write this review because of my disappointed. If makers are reading this then please get a good plot next time.

Other than that Situations, location, surroundings , night scenes of Ruins, a well , police behavior make that all real. Engaging and Thrilling. Tara Sutaria's Performance is good. Something new.

The struggle is inspiring!
UmeshAditya4 March 2024
A crime thriller with story revolving around a survival drama of a girl n similar to NH10 movie but NH10 was very intense than this. But definitely worth a watch for it being a winning story. That struggle of a very ordinary girl to escape by withholding her composure in that horrifying situation is inspiring. It's not dragged unnecessarily, short n crisp with last 30 minutes with nail baiting scenes. Actors have performed quite well. But screenplay could have been even more intense n impactful. Available on Disney Hotstar. My ratings 6/10!

Thriller Experience
mp-154338 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I saw the movie. But I was waiting for a long time. I didn't feel anything new, as the movie is a copy of NH10. But really I was shocked to see Tara Sutaria's acting. What is acting? Working with such a senior actor for the first time is a very good thing. But has worked absolutely fearlessly. An actress like this should get many movies. As long as there is an OTT platform, such heroes and heroines will not come forward. If you really want to experience a thriller movie then watch this movie. Actually I want to give 7 stars for this acting. Like the post if you like it.

Tara Sutaria- I am waiting for your new movie or series. I want to see in thriller movie.

Below average...
gk30300725 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There are two points that participate in creating a good/very good movie: balance of direction and a good story. However, in one case, the movie has high chances to turn out trash. Meaning to say, a good story line but below average screenplay/direction. And this movie falls in this category.

Inspired by true events, and of-course when you talk about chambal dacoits, it is highly probable that such type of event/events would have happened. A kidnapped person who turns on the table to its side and releases itself -- a very good story with a perfect blend of horror, thriller, and mystery.

Movie starts great. Four dacoits overtake a car and kills all present inside, in a span of ten minutes. One dacoit is a sharp shooter - bravo. Everything was going all fine, these highly skilled actors are doing their part well, when enters the protagonist of the story - Tara Sutaria.

Till her kidnapping, she doesn't get much chance to show her skills. And neither does the director/writer. But after that, the movie starts downhill at a speed of 200 km/hr (just sarcastically). And what doesn't work, is something i am going to highlight:

1. She is barefoot, but runs like a skilled Paan Singh Tomar all around the deserted village with sharp stones and spokes here and there. She is even able to beat highly skilled dacoits (whose primary skill include running) in run race, not once but many times.

2. The place where dacoits stay, like Veerappan, is a place which is fed in their mind like knowing ABCD to an English language Professor. A simple chirm could warn them the position of the object. And yet, she is able to outrun Jugnu making him fall in the well. Just a pathetic dacoit.

3. I would have loved to know her past where she had shown her bravery, and skills, rather some melodramatic and unnecessary love scenes that only dragged. A mix of two would have been much better.

4. It felt like this movie is a mix of many hollywood/bollywood movies like 'I spit on your grave', 'lake placid', 'NH 10', 'Jungle (2000)' and may be many more. While those movies weren't also too good, this fell below them.

5. At last, she is moving bare foot on the railway track. And one dacoit is behind her who wants to know her name. Really!!! If i remember correctly, he was the one who talked to Sid like 6-7 hours back over a phone call, and Sid asked two three times about Apruva, taking out her name aloud.

Well, there are many more such silly and undeniable flaws that would take me another 2-3 hours to jot down.

4 stars for the first half, and nothing more.

The fight of a brave girl Apurva with a Gang of 4 people
saminansari-651483 December 2023
Thrilling movie, showing bravery of a girl Apurva to fight with gang of 4. The film shoots in an abandoned place. Active of Rajpal Yadav and Abhishek Banerjee may be improved more better. However movie revolves round actress that how she fight with four people. The scene of film are well thrilled according to situations. Movie is able to keep audience to sit till last to know the fate of the story. I will recommend every girl to watch this movie and to know how can you self defend in emergency. There is no any boring scene in movie except only one song. There is vulgar dialogue so don't watch this with children.

Poor man's NH10
winak2 May 2024
The whole premise of the kidnapping was weak. Secondly, 3 comedians don't make great villainous characters. Rajpal Yadav with his diminutive stature and personality wasn't convincing as a bad guy. As for the rest of the gang, at any point they didn't seem threatening enough to overpower the victim. Dialogues were pedestrian at best. If you have seen NH10 you wouldn't be overly impressed with this version. Tara was no Anushka, you required a bit more mature personality to pull off this role. Some scenes were obviously manufactured just for thrills. There is a whole wilderness for the bad guys to search for their escaped victim, but inspite of not having any clue, they always seemed to be in the vicinity of the victim. They surely must have some kind of extra sensory perception. The frantic fiance always seemed to be a day late in his rescue attempt so was basically useless to the plot. The good thing about the movie is that the director knew the limitation of the script and the actors and didn't prolong it unnecessarily.

Slow
sameerkhan66625 November 2023
Even though the film is not too long to watch but the worst part it does is the story is so damn slow that it could prolong to that of the speed of turtle. One of the best YouTube Bollywood reviewer suggested to watch this. I did not like it. Saying that it resembles the movie that of Anushka Sharma NH something. God no. This movie is not a even bit similar to that. That Anushka's film was so close to heart and horrific but this one no way, I wanted to skip all parts. This movie is like slow train on the track that demands fast pace. Rustling and old, screeching and predictable to were it will lead.

Worst movie cannot watch with parents
adiyt-2983021 November 2023
Nowadays bollywood is trying to put more sexual scenes in movie. Because of this we cannot watch these movies with family. And they are mentioning gwalior and morena but none of them scenes are from these places and mostly all of them scenes are from Rajasthan. Not showing any culture by the scenes and providing almost wrong information in the movie. Without sexual scenes movie can be good. Character choice is good, that creating goosebumps in my body. But children's cannot watch movie with parents. Bollywood should focus on making good movie not on making good sexual scenes. This movie is against our culture.

Good movie
prakritig-736224 December 2023
Tara Surarias best performance till date. Abhishek Bannerjee is phenomenal. The movie is good dont know why people are criticizing.

However I did feel that Tara Sutaria doesnt pass like a middle class girl. They should have changed her look a bit or the character could have been a rich girl maybe that would have make sense. Even her hindi diction didnt make her look like a small town girl at all.

Rajpal Yadav was brilliant as well and it was nice to see him on screen after a long time. The movie does give you NH10 feels though so dont expect to he blown away by the plot. However its a good one time watch and you might just enjoy it.

Typical movie - OverActing -- Trying to Replicate Highway
deesaai21 November 2023
Tara sutaria wants to prove she is next big thing and has choosen this subject to compete with Highway which made Alia Bhatt who she is today.. but Tara sutaria fails as her Acting, expression are all over the top, with typical in a film where Heroine gets kidnapped and then keeps falling when ever she tries to escape and ofcours she bums into the kidnapper and She is matcho Bravo and kills them all... And ofcourse you need to make noises when you run to look like you are real , Then keep crying unnecessary to showcase you are acting naturally - which is falling flat... Then we have good Actors rajpal and others who showcase Bad boys are cool so it's a Very very sad Bad Film... Expect the same from the actress director.

It delivers!!!
dharmishthabankawat19 November 2023
The first and most amazing thing about film is acting, the decoits were top notch, you just hate them from the start and Tara sutaria just wowwww. Not seen much of Tara's work but now will keep track in future. The protagonist is one brave woman!!! And I just couldn't believe this is the same Rajpal Yadav I saw in bhool bhulaiya series. The romantic interest is perfectly balanced , it does not take limelight away from the whole thing but shines on its own , chemistry is good so even few moments make you root for them( but that is all secondary) . Not a very well executed towards the end but it's good nonetheless.
