The whole gang is meeting with the Regents. Pete makes an impassioned on Artie's behalf for leniency since it wasn't him that actually killed Leena. The Regents agree and want to reinstate him with no punishment. Artie can't believe it saying he killed her. The priest's words echo in his head "an evil that will live with you for the rest of your days." They say that living with this is the worst punishment they can think of. They note that Leena taped a "signature statement" in which she stated she understood the risks of the Warehouse and they adjourn.
Back at the Warehouse everyone worries about him but Pete points out that they'll have a case in no time.
Cut to a man running through the Cowan National Forest in Oregon. He is on his cell phone calling for help. He is stopped by someone with an artifact that has the power to literally swallow the man into the earth. He buries his cell phone for good measure.
Pete and Claudia head off to investigate while Jinks and Myka stay behind to babysit Artie.
Pete and Claudia meet with a forest ranger named Smith and discover both an odd engraving on a tree and the dead man's phone. They unearth both the man and his phone and discover his name was Linus Bentley. He worked for the local cell phone company that was putting up towers in the forest which drew the ire of a local eco non profit Green Earth.
They go to the offices and meet Autumn who says people like Linus Bentley must be stopped before they lose the forest and quotes Thoreau. They break the news that he's dead and she excuses herself to make a call.
They discover Bentley was scouting locations for a cell tower. From the phone they find out he called a medical marijuana place. When they arrive there they find the man he called buried in dirt in the grow room under a tarp with the same symbol from the tree carving.
They look up symbol and discover it represented an eco-terrorist group called "Last People on Earth." They figure they killed Bentley for working on the cell towers.
The ranger recognizes the symbol from the shack where a leader of LPE Ryan Clayton was caught by the FBI. He nearly burned the place down trying to escape and was put in jail. They notice a Thoreau quote carved into a panel. They figure Autumn is their girl. They go to her house. She's packing up to skedaddle. They go in guns drawn thinking she has an artifact. They find her in a closet and she pepper sprays Pete.
It turns out that she isn't the culprit. She says Linus and she and the medical marijuana guys were all friends and in LPE together and someone knows this, what they did and they're killing them one by one.
Claudia and Pete deduce it must be the head of the local logging company who was injured in one of the LPE attacks and lost millions of dollars in revenue. While Pete goes to talk to him, Claudia chats with Autumn. The head of the logging company was mad at LPE but didn't kill them. He did, however, testify against Ryan in court and calls it the best day of his life, showing Pete a photo from the paper from court. In the background Pete sees Ranger Smith, he was Ryan Clayton's brother.
Meanwhile, Autumn is explaining to Claudia that LPE made bad decisions but did good things too. She felt like what she was doing mattered and didn't think much about tomorrow. Claudia says she thinks a lot about tomorrow and relates it to Artie and how she tried to help him and doesn't know what to do about dealing with him. Autumn says everyone's a mess in their 20s and you just get older and figure things out as you go. Ranger Smith arrives with the artifact, a lantern that rends the earth under people's feet. He knocks Claudia out and grabs Autumn. He thinks one of LPE ratted his brother out and let him rot in prison. Pete shows up and Smith uses the lantern to have the earth suck him up and takes off with Autumn. Claudia helps Pete out and they head to the Ranger's house.
There they discover Ryan's notebook which used code names for his LPE buddies. The Ranger figured out the code and started killing them. They figure they took her to the logging base camp. They're right. He has Autumn up on a cliff. He begins using the lantern to destroy the site. He wants to frame her so she can rot in prison like his brother did. Pete arrives and disarms him and after some struggle they bag and tag the lantern and the Ranger is taken away. Autumn admits she ratted out Ryan. She tells Claudia he was becoming angry and violent against people and didn't know what else to do. Claudia says she did what she had to and saved him in a way. Autumn agrees but says she also abandoned him after jail. He said to stay away and even though she knew she shouldn't, that he needed her, she did stay away. Claudia realizes what she needs to do.
While all this is going down, Myka and Jinks are trailing Artie in the Warehouse. They follow him to the spiral room. This serene round room was where Leena did her work. She would take artifacts to the center of the circle and channel their energy and the room would identify, via symbols on the outside of the circle, where the artifacts should be stored. She helped keep them in balance and Artie says he must do this now. Jinks and Myka offer to help but of course Artie wants no part of that.
Artie holds an artifact, a porthole, and the room seems to indicate a certain aisle. Unfortunately, when they take it there, it goes haywire and sets off a chain of other artifacts that unleash Da Vinci's gargoyle, a flying menace.
They devise a plan to neutralize the gargoyle, using Jinks as bait, and destroy it. They take the porthole back to the spiral room but after five tries they land on five different symbols, all signifying fear, anger and sorrow. Artie wonders if there is something wrong with the spiral. Myka points out that perhaps it's the person using it since it keeps giving back emotions that Artie is feeling. They note that Leena was calm and centered which is why the room worked for her. Artie is not. He asks how he is supposed to do this. Myka says they will do it with their help. Jinks takes the artifact and tries the spiral. It lands on the indescribable beauty symbol. They have found their new person to keep things in balance.
Claudia returns and hugs Artie and says she did what she had to do. He knows. He thanks her. He then watches Leena's signature video. She did accept and understand her responsibilities and risks and was quite eloquent about it too. He apologizes to the screen tearfully and looks at her sweet smiling visage.
