The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins has been working with Nicolas Cage on a new horror project called Longlegs, and now he has just set up the horror project he’ll be moving on to when Longlegs is all wrapped up: an adaptation of the Stephen King short story The Monkey! Big Little Lies is cranking up the intensity in its second installation with a deeper dive into a past recurring character: Tori, played by Sarah Sokolovic. Poor Tori didn't get to do much last season, except harbor suspicions about her husband Joseph and his coworker Madeline having an affair. In the season two premiere, she bumps into Madeline's husband at the supermarket and ever so casually shares news about her new breasts (cue the awkward laughter). We've yet to learn about what Tori has in store this season, but we certainly know a thing or two about the actress portraying her.
A theater veteran, Sokolovic started off her career in shows such as The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World, Detroit, and A Streetcar Named Desire after graduating from Yale School of Drama. Around the same time, the actress picked up a few roles on the small screen, including one-off parts...

I’ve got some interesting news for all of the Gremlins fans out there! According to Variety, WB is developing a Gremlins animated series that will air on WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service. I think you’re going to like the direction that they are taking the series as well.
According to the report, the series will be a “period piece that would follow Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather played in the films by Keye Luke, as a young man as he goes on adventures with the friendly Mogwai Gizmo.”
I would love to see a series that follows the adventures of Mr. Wing and his Mogwai! There are a lot of incredibly fun stories that could be told there. The series will be written and executive produced by Tze Chun, who is known for writing and directing films like Bryan Cranston’s 2013’s Cold Comes the Night and 2009’s Children of Invention.

Short of the DayA stylistic fever dream of frustration.
Anyone who’s ever had it knows that writer’s block is more than a mere malady, it’s a mental frustration that keeps you hovering between the fantasy you’re trying to create and the reality of not being able to create it. It’s like pushing against a massive wall that yields a little but never gives.
Writer’s block has been captured on film many times in everything from Naked Lunch to Adaptation to The Shining, but I’ve never seen it captured quite like it is in Writer’s Block, a short film from writer-director Brandon Polanco that blends one writer’s frustration with fever dream hallucinations of his block, here manifested as a lovely and mysterious woman.

A stylish and well-acted espionage thriller, “The Infiltrator” is also naggingly familiar. Based on the true story of middle-aged FBI agent Bob Mazur (Bryan Cranston) who went undercover to take down Pablo Escobar’s drug trafficking regime in 1986, it has the measured tone of a slick procedural, while Cranston’s grave delivery effectively conveys the trepidatious nature of his character’s situation. At the same time, this is nothing new for Cranston, for whom “Breaking Bad” still casts a heavy shadow. Once again, he’s a gruff, well-intentioned family man who gets in over his head, and must plot an escape route. This was even the case with his Oscar-nominated turn in “Trumbo.” These days, Cranston’s movie career has been restricted by variations on the same routine.

For a prestige drama about one of the more shameful periods in American history (there are a lot of those), Trumbo is surprisingly funny. And thank god for that. It feels good to laugh at the idiocy surrounding the Hollywood blacklist of the 1950s, if only so that you don’t have to think too much about how widespread support for the most unAmerican things — all in the name of America, naturally — has been a constant refrain in American public discourse. All eyes will be on director Jon M. Chu this October when the G.I. Joe: Retaliation helmer pulls back the curtain on his other Hasbro toy adaptation – music-themed Jem and the Holograms – but Chu is already thinking further ahead. Over at Paramount, where he last worked behind the camera on the Joe sequel, the director has become attached to produce action-adventure thriller Escape, from a script by Tze Chun (TV’s Once Upon a Time).
The story is being kept mostly under wraps but centers on an unlikely team of tech whizzes with criminal pasts who come together for a top-secret mission. In addition to writing for ABC’s popular fantasy series, Chun penned the script for an taut, little thriller back in 2013 called Cold Comes the Night, which starred a newly post-Breaking Bad Bryan Cranston and Alice Eve. Currently finishing up Now You See Me: The Second Act, Jon M. Chu already has his sights on a future project. He'll be a producer on Escape, an action adventure by director, screenwriter and cinematographer Tze Chun. Not many details are yet out there about Escape's plot, other than that it involves "tech-savvy criminals who are recruited on a mission". But there's obviously something there, since Paramount have seen fit to give the project a studio home.Tze Chun previously wrote and directed the indie drama Children Of Invention and the thriller Cold Comes The Night, which starred Bryan Cranston and Alice Eve. So it looks likely that he'll man Escape's cameras too, with Chu overseeing. Chu's Now You See Me sequel is out in the UK on June 10, 2016.

You remember Bryan Cranston, right? White guy, about average height, tendency to shave his head and scowl out meth-related menace from behind a bushy goatee? Since Breaking Bad ended last year, Cranston’s been floating from project to project, picking up a role here and there but nothing truly memorable since his hair grew back and his perma-grimace softened. Cranston’s added another post-Breaking Bad role to his list: The Infiltrator. Like the title implies, Cranston will play a guy who infiltrates. In this case, that guy would be the real-life Robert Mazur, a Customs and Excise agent who went undercover into the highest circles of Columbian drug cartels, specifically the Medellin cartel headed up by Pablo Escobar. So the absolute highest of the high in South American drug circles. Based on Mazur’s autobiography of the same name, The Infiltrator will be helmed by Brad Furman, who’s got a solid working relationship with Cranston...

Ariel Vromen’s next film – Criminal – is shaping up to be proof positive of the filmmaker’s ability to attract fascinating casting combinations. Where his previous movie – 2012’s The Iceman – featured Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, James Franco, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta and David Schwimmer, his forthcoming venture is bringing in names even more legendary in nature.
The plot centres around a dangerous criminal, who is tasked by the CIA to complete a dead agent’s mission after they implant that agent’s memories and experiences into his brain. Kevin Costner will feature in the leading role, with Ryan Reynolds, Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Oldman also signing up. By anyone’s standards, that’s quite a lot of testosterone, so we now have the announcement that Alice Eve will also co-star.

Elegantly updates the King of All Monsters for the 21st century in ways that have moved with the global zeitgeist. But Hollywood’s tedious myopia means the movie as a whole isn’t quite so beautiful. I’m “biast” (pro): I’ve been eager to see what Gareth Edwards would do with a budget
I’m “biast” (con): I’m increasingly leery of reboots
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It’s been 60 years since Ishirô Honda unleashed Godzilla, his cinematic metaphor for the dangers of nuclear weapons — and how they had already ravaged Japan — upon the world. As timescales for reboots go, two generations sounds about right. (We’re going to pretend that 1998 did not happen.) And 2014’s simply, elegantly titled Godzilla goes about updating the King of All Monsters for the 21st century in ways that work beautifully and have moved in tandem with the global zeitgeist.

Spartacus: Blood & Sand alumna Erin Cummings has been cast as one of the leads in ABC’s 10-episode summer drama series The Astronaut Wives Club, from Fake Empire, Groundswell Productions and ABC Studios. Written by Stephanie Savage based on Lily Koppel’s book and directed by Nick Casavettes, it tells the real story of the women who stood beside some of the biggest heroes in American history during the height of the space race. Cummings, repped by Untitled and Paradigm, will play Marge, Deke Slayton’s outspoken wife, whose colorful past is not in keeping with the cookie-cutter image that the astronaut wives are expected to present to the world. Maternal and funny, she becomes the glue that holds the Astronaut Wives Club together. Cummings’ series credits also include ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7 and CBS’ Made In Jersey. She has three features coming out: Cold Comes The Night, Late Phases and The Last Word.

"12 Years a Slave"
What's It About? Based on the memoir by Solomon Northup, "12 Years a Slave" stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man who was kidnapped from his home in New York and sold into slavery. Northup ends up on a plantation run by the cruel Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender) and his equally awful wife (Sarah Paulson), who take special delight in tormenting another young slave named Patsey (Lupita Nyong'o).
Why We're In: The movie took him Best Picture Sunday night -- see director Steve McQueen quite literally jump for joy here -- for good reason. Nyong'o took home the Best Supporting Actress award for her wrenching performance, and John Ridley won for his adapted screenplay.

Alice Eve might be best known for her roles in Star Trek Into Darkness and Starter for 10, but speaking to the Brit actress for the home release of drama Cold Comes the Night one thing stands out: she really knows her movies.
The latest star to volunteer a choice for our ongoing My Favourite Movie series, Eve picked a film from Last Tango in Paris director Bernardo Bertolucci.

Bertolucci's 1996 film starred Liv Tyler as an American girl who heads to the Tuscan countryside after the death of her mother. Seeking to uncover the identity of her father and lose her virginity to a boy she met four years earlier, Stealing Beauty has...

Fox is quickly moving forward with casting its eagerly anticipated series Gotham. This weekend, The O.C. and Southland star Ben McKenzie landed the role of James Gordon, prompting numerous jokes of a young Commissioner pushing off baddies by yelling, “Welcome to the G.C., bitch!” Now, four more (and relatively unknown) actors are joining the series’ principal cast. Most notably, Sean Pertwee (pictured above) is on board as Alfred, the trusted Wayne family butler, and Robin Lord Taylor will fill the shoes of Oswald Cobblepot, better known as The Penguin.
Sean Pertwee has quite a history, touring with the Royal Shakespeare Company back in the 1980s before turning in work as a gruff character actor in sci-fi flicks like Event Horizon, Soldier and Equilibrium. Recently, Pertwee lent his voice to video games Killzone, Fable II and their respective sequels. According to Variety, Pertwee’s Alfred Pennyworth will be “fiercely protective...

Bryan Cranston is a cool guy. Loved and acclaimed from both inside the industry and those at home, we already know Anthony Hopkins is a fan, and you can now add Brandon Polanco to that list. In 2012, Cranston was filming “Cold Comes the Night” when production halted due to Hurricane Sandy. Being the cool guy that he is, Cranston wasted no time and created a short film contest for the production assistants working on the film. He challenged them to write and submit scripts, with the winner landing Cranston in the lead role, in a film they would shoot during the downtime. Pa Brandon Polanco’s script won, and three hours later “Writer’s Block” went into production. The 13-minute black-and-white short film stars Cranston, Chaz Rose, Lela Edgar, and Spenser Granese, and the whole experience is one Polanco treasured and learned from. Why Watch? This short would probably be worth it merely to hear Bryan Cranston‘s noir-perfect voice deliver lines like a construction worker shoved into a tutu, but the work from director Brandon Polanco has a moodiness to it that pushes beyond the star power. In Writer’s Block, Cranston plays a screenwriter suffering from the titular malady who invents a mystery woman to help him through the pain. Then, he sees her in real life. Suggestive and angsty, it’s shot in black and white with a crisp angle toward accentuating the writer’s aggravation (and loneliness). There’s a clear hint of Lynch to all of it, and it unsurprisingly leaves a palpable sense of unease on the tip of your tongue. An intriguing flick, it also has an interesting backstory to its production (which you can read more about here) as a contest Cranston held for production assistants working on Cold Comes the Night. Getting...

After witnessing Bryan Cranston in his handsome parade of suits and tuxedos during awards season, it's refreshing to see the 57-year-old cheerily walk through the stage door at New York's Roundabout Theater in jeans and a plaid shirt. "I don't really like to dress up," he admits, perhaps unnecessarily for an actor widely known for dressing down (remember Walter White's infamous tighty-whities?) But Cranston is taking full advantage of the fact that while White is dead, his career is the exact opposite. A slew of his anticipated movies are hitting theaters this year,...

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy temporarily halted the production of "Cold Comes the Night," a drama-thriller starring Bryan Cranston (read our review). During that impromptu down-time, Cranston created a contest. He invited the movie's production assistants to create a script to submit to him, and if he liked it, he'd star in it. The winner was Brandon Polanco, and the result was "Writer's Block," a short black-and-white starring Cranston, Lela Edgar, Spenser Granese, and Chaz Rose. According to BuzzFeed, production began just three hours after Polanco won the contest. What's the story? It's not crystal clear, but it definitely keeps you watching with unflickering narrowed eyes until the end.

Coming off the final season of AMC’s brilliant drama series Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston has already earned the respect and admiration of every critic and viewer out there. As chemistry teacher-turned-meth kingpin Walter White, Cranston commanded the small screen with shattering force and, throughout five wonderful seasons, developed one of the most complex antiheroes in television history. As that show concluded, fans mourned not only the loss of Breaking Bad as a whole but also Cranston’s incredible performance. Many questioned whether we’d ever see the actor as anything other than Walter White again.
So, it’s refreshing to see that in Cold Comes the Night, a tense and effective modern film-noir, the actor isn’t content to live off the sizable goodwill that Breaking Bad has afforded him. As near-blind Polish career criminal Topo, Cranston is an exceptionally strong antagonist, equal parts menacing and mysterious. Saddled with a thick accent,...

You’re going to have to look past the unfortunate poster art for Cold Comes the Night, the sophomore feature from indie filmmaker Tze Chun, which seems to position the film as an unabashed cheapie lurking behind a graceful and elegant title. But once you do, you’ll be in for a satisfying surprise as Chun’s film plays like an echo of classic film noirs of the studio (or even a handful of 1990s neo-noirs), those poetically titled gems that feature hardworking or fast talking dames trying to get ahead any way they can in the cruel ways of a male dominated world. True, there’s a certain B grade element to its pulpy and sometimes violent certainties and convenient twists, but anchored staunchly by a couple furiously committed performances, it’s one of the most engaging examples...
