Fun episode with sense of zest
nylonsportz20 August 2013
In between the more angst-ridden episodes in the recent seasons of Supernatural, this episode comes as a breath of fresh air.

One begins to see how well Sam and Dean work together when the different emotional and relationship problems are firmly placed outside their own friendship and concern for each other.

The setting is fun and ties into the fantasy fan worlds and fans of the series. The story is funny and frantic, containing a couple of gory deaths and the welcome return of an old friend who complements the two brothers. It's great to see Sam and Dean entering into the spirit of the adventure in more ways than one.

A Welcome Turn From Torn & Frayed
aparnakishen26 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Well I have gone through general reviews and opinions online and they really don't seem to tip towards this being one of the good episodes. With all the costume drama pics that were online prior to its release, it was certainly much looked forth too, so maybe viewers must have set their expectation high; all apart, this is a fun episode that doesn't loose the story of the season.

Felicia Day is back with her dorkiness and she may not be an eye candy, but that's not what she is here to achieve! Dean thankfully is not in the " I am the cause for all woes in the world and Sam's life". He is aware of the implications of the 'Citizen Fang' fake message and what Sam has left behind to be with him - but that is it.. no brooding and alcoholic self loathing. His child like enthusiasm on Larping is 'A'dorable.

Sam persists with his 'lament' phase but that is who Sam always was. He plays the sweet sane younger brother by giving into Dean's 'lets have some fun' need. The grand finale to the show with the Brave Heart speech and Jensen's comic timing was applaud worthy :) Why wouldn't SPN fans love this episode....

It is always nice seeing Charlie

This is a very fun episode that has a lot going for it. Charlie is always a welcome character because she brings such a nice energy. The LARPing is handled with care and the show gentle pokes fun at superfans while making a point about escapism. And of course Dean is very fun when he is a bit nerdy and Ackles clearly relished making this episode. This is Supernatural at its breezy entertaining best.

Geeking Out
danajs2419 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As much as I dislike Charlie, this was a fun episode. Charlie was a bit better in this episode than she was in the leviathan episode, but her desire to stay away from the Winchesters seems to go against her own character. I feel like she would like to be a part of the "real" magic they deal with, since she is so in love with all things nerd. Dean geeking out was by far the best part of the episode, although his costume as well as Sam's at the end left something to be desired. Dean's random chain mail on his costume bothered me, seeming to be a frivolous add on instead of something utilitarian like they would wear at a renaissance fair. Sam turning down chicks is pretty annoying as well, showing off his true fun-hating colors. The "monster" in this episode also left something to be desired, as he was defeated quite quickly in the showdown at the end. I'd like to see another episode like this in the future, or even learn that Dean is a regular in the LARPing realm.

Not bad but not good either.
mm-3924 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Supernatural is starting to run out of ideas. After 8 years I can understand why! LARP and the Real Girl is a show about satire. The LARP episode makes fun of people who play live action role playing games. Someone is using real fairy magic to hurt other players and the Winchesters must figure out who. The LARP episode is all silliness. Some parts are funny other parts amusing, and some parts forgettable. The Brave Hart ending is funny. Not one of the better episode, but watchable. I give a seven out of ten. Sam and Dean are still strong characters. The series is well directed. There needs to be something new to add to the show. Perhaps the reappearance of Dick Roman.

A boring episode from an okay so far season
teainthetreehouse29 April 2021
This episode does nothing but bring pop culture references and none of the plot.

I liked seeing Dean dress up in a LARPING outfit, that was fun. If you like pointing to the screen and going "Oh, I understand that!" then this episode is for you. If you care about the plot of the main season, you can skip it.

The Sam Sacrifice
sooner_marinette11 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So, this whole season has lead us back and forth through time and to the present where Sam finally gives up Amelia for good. This is all fine and it is nice to see what Sam would be like in a normal environment, but episodes like this drive me crazy where the writers only go so far back in time. Do we need to evoke Lisa and Ben's names? No, I get that it may not be great, but for Dean to not even give a, "I've been there; I get it." is very annoying.

The story with Charlie and the LARPing was a fun story and I love having strong female characters in the show.

Overall, this episode is good and I'm glad Sam and Dean buried this latest beef in a fun way this time.
