Very engaging, revolting and adorable...
RosanaBotafogo13 June 2021
I've already fallen in love with the introduction, a joint production from four countries, delivering a fantastic work, the depth of everyday problems of women, overworked, exhausted, stressed, but never surrender, and continue to struggle hard for their families, jobs and still they have to keep themselves happy... Beautiful production, convincing performances, passionate deliveries, well-developed script, very engaging, revolting and adorable...

really worth seeing
maja-bp2 June 2015
I really liked it. Although my first thought was it is rather long, I read some great critics on several of my favorite sites so I decided to give it a try. 155 minutes just passed by without me noticing it. It is not heart-braking drama with cheesy happy end. It has a kind of happy end, but in a rather realistic way. It's a movie you have to think about, where you put yourself in someone's else's shoes. It speaks about the need to be loved as we are, but at the same time we want to change the others, not willing to change ourselves. Really worth seeing.

Juka's „You Carry Me" will carry you to the new era of Croatian filmmaking
Mashinica26 August 2015
„You Carry Me" is actually a really untypical movie for a country like Croatia. Still burdened by the war which happened over 20 years ago,and today burdened by hard economic status which is not getting any better, Croats and Croatian cinematography, unfortunately, centers their themes around this widely known situations. And what is yet to be discovered is why Croatian cinematographers hesitate to explore less familiar grounds.

Ivona Juka is obviously not that kind of a filmmaker. Although she has admitted the story has some biographical elements, Juka's „You Carry Me" is nothing like the movies to which Croatian audience is used to. Powerful female characters dominate this three-way-divided story, presented in a non-traditional roles, which is rarely seen in such conservative society. Well written and smartly directed, „You Carry Me" will carry you to the new era of Croatian filmmaking. Made in co-production with Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro,it was expected Juka would search for actors outside the domesticborders. Fortunately, Vojislav Brajović was selected for the role, a Serbian actor who has probably won all the prizes there were to win in former Yugoslavia. Hence, my favorite story of all three is the first one, about demented father, whose daughter Ives (Lana Barić) is trying to cope with his illness.

But don't underestimate the power of the second story. Helena Beljan's debut role (Dora), for which she was awarded a prize in Pula Film Festival, is refreshing, and in great balance with acting of her outlawed father Vedran (Goran Hajduković), who also happens to be a first time actor. The idea of a little girl whose role model is a controversial football manager Zdravko Mamić (currently under investigation in Croatia), is so superb, and well executed.

And while watching the first two stories, I was wondering what's happening in the third one, and how can it possibly be better than the first two? And to be honest, I was hesitating in the beginning. The story of Nataša didn't seem special in any way, she was being cheated on, and she was trying to cope with it. But by the end of the third story (and the whole film), everything made sense. I won't reveal any more details, I'll let the viewers see for themselves why the third story was put right in the end, and why the exact title of the movie is „You Carry Me". The tag line of the movie is „No treason, no surrender".

So I'm inviting everyone not to surrender and not to lose hope in Croatian filmmaking. Just like all the characters in the movie, and every single person on this planet, Juka is trying to find her place under the sun. And she is doing it right – by doing what she probably loves the most – enriching our nation's „seventh art"

If you have the chance to watch this movie don't miss it - you will amazed
eveverde26 August 2015
I had the chance to watch this movie during my vacation in Croatia at the Pula Film Festival. I usually don't watch many foreign movies, but i was surely amazed by this one. I loved the strong female characters, and enjoyed the father - daughter theme. My favorite characters and relationship in the movie was the one between Ives and her father. The movie is stuck in my head even now, a month later after I have seen it, I still get the chills remembering some scenes that i don't want to spoil to the others. I can only recommend to go and watch this movie, you will love it.

While reading the other comments, I noticed that people were bothered by the length of the movie, in my opinion that is something ridiculous to complain about, those two hours flew by so fast cause you were captured by the movie so much that you didn't notices the time. Saying you don't want to watch this movie cause is too long is like saying you don't want to read a book that has more than 100 pages. Despite the length you should give this movie a chance. You definitely will not regret it.

Fabouluuous!!!!

First I have to say I watched the film at Pula film festival. When they say „Under the stars" it really means under the stars. I always loved watching film on the open, but Pula's Arena is gorgeous. (My fist time there, so maybe it shows a little  ) The ambiance is totally great. Antient roman amphitheater, warm summer night, giant screen... Great! It is a such a great place for films. I think I found a right place for this fabulous movie. Several thousand people enyojed the film with me. Presentation was short (that is always good) and after that we just immerged into stories. I loved it, and people around me loved it. Six times!!!! the spontaneous applause boursted out. It was like the crows could not wait for the end to show their enthusisam. The atmosphere was really special. Some special vibe flew above roman theater. Eerybody found a peace for themselves. The film is great. It's strong. It holds on you. I'm really happy I was a part of that.

Unconnected at every level. Avoid ! Avoid ! For the love of Art Avoid !
ApostleOfDirt18 July 2015
What is this ? How can you invest 6 years of production time into something and it comes out looking like this mess. So, so underdeveloped. First things first. The acting: Lead actor is not an actor, he can not act, it's too obvious. Don't blame him, he is trying and someday he may learn. The girl, his daughter, although somewhat better, not convincing at all. Nataša Janjić brilliant execution, BRILLIANT. The script: Lacks imagination. Redundant and boring mesh of repeated clichés we all heard before plenty of times. Camera: I'm not an expert, but what the heck with all the blur on big open shots, was that on purpose or what ?.

The biggest issue with this movie is that is hyped with no good reason. It's not even average, it's bad. it' way too long. You could hear the audience in the cinema whispering to each other at end of the first hour wishing it would end soon!. It's 2 and a half hours of the worst movie agony you as a movie goer will ever endure. You keep waiting for something to happen but nothing does. I could go through every single scene in this movie and write only about what is wrong with it.

Some characters are really likable and this could have been a good movie , if not for the directors obvious ego tripping on expressionistic overdose. One of the main focuses of this movie is old people's dementia, but it's like the movie itself is demented and it knows there is no cure so it doesn't care that much just like the director.

Don't miss this movie!
ivmarkic1 July 2015
„You carry me" is an absolute breathtaking movie with a tremendous storyline that will keep you interested all the way through. Skillfully made and written intelligent. You don't need tons of special effects to create an unique movie. The acting is great, the story is powerful and intense . Three separate life stories, each so unique, but also related with the main question trough the movie: "when will YOU change?" The film has great impact on how we think about everyday situations. At first we may judge some presented situations on the screen but the film shows us that everyone could relate to those situations. It shows us that life is not black and white and that is often unpredictable.

Ivona, thank you for making this masterpiece and for raising Croatian cinematography on a higher level. I never write reviews but this time, I had to. Don't miss this movie!

The movie is very bad .Lost time in front of TV.

Action in the film is good or even without beginning and end . When you think that something started to happen and unfold switch to another scene with other people and put in the background the initial scene and people .

Movie ends in a very boring way, the viewer has the feeling that they are now advertising and that the film continues for another hour .

Beyond words
GreenPandora26 August 2015
I was lucky to had the chance to watch this movie during my trip to Zagreb, amazingly enough Zagreb's movie theater had English subtitles so foreigners and tourist like me where able to enjoy this great movie. The astonishing thing about the stories in this movie is that they are so relateable to everyone, in one way or in the other we have experienced what the characters experience. You carry me characters makes you live the story with them, they make you feel what they feel, this movie gives you an (positive) emotional roller coaster. It is incredible how captured you get by the story, how you live every moment with the characters. It is one of the better movies I have seen lately, and I truly hope that everyone who will have the chance will go to the Cinema and enjoy it as much as I did.

Art Pearl
emmbipi10 August 2015
I usually don't comment on other people reviews, because I believe everybody has a right to their opinion. Nevertheless, 2,5 hours „worst movie agony" is kind of exaggeration. „Ben Hur" last over 3,5 hours and you never hear people describing it as a „long movie". Personally, I do not judge the movies by length, but by quality. Would you decide not to read a book only because it has 100+ pages? I suppose not. I wouldn't. Some stories take longer and some movies take longer. And I consider this one to be an art pearl. Not only within Croatian cinematography. As for the acting, although the main actor is actually not and actor, he portrayed the character very well. You might see in some scenes he is a bit stiff, but that can be attributed to the role he is playing. You don't expect a tattooed ex-criminal to go all „mushy" (not that I have prejudices on tattooed people, more on criminals). He is a great cast for the role. Now that I think about it, I cannot think of some other Croatian actor I would choose for the role. I agreed that we have all seen similar stories, but the human relations is a topic you cannot surpass and in a hundred years you will still have similar topics, and the people will still want to see movies like that. I find the movie excellent, something quite new in our cinematography.

Best CRO Movie in Years
t-zoran5 November 2015
Absolutely stunning in every respect. You can feel blood, sweat and tears, in other words the tremendous effort and time that was invested in this project. This movie stands way above everything that was recently made in Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia. Ivona Juka already deserves a star in the Croatian, as well as in the ex-YU Walk of Fame, right next to Arsen Ostojic, Dalibor Matanic, Aleksandar Petrovic, Srdjan Spasojevic, Kusturica, Srdjan Dragojevic and others. This movie reflects the society in which it was made on so many levels, that some people might even find it overwhelming. This is a powerful film-making and I wish the sublime messages from this movie could reach as many people in Croatia, ex-YU and other countries as possible. Go and see the movie,'cos you won't see many more alike.

Well done, girls!
mattmorris-9318528 December 2015
But not a chick movie! Don't worry :). The story does describe three women (2 women and one girl), but I would not limit it with "chick movie" description as it would be very unfair to the author and the director. They did a great job in portraying both male and female characters. Taking two controversial male characters seemed to be a great invite for the press, but once you see the movie, you see that the former convict, football fan leader fits perfectly into the role of little girl's father. His roughness and lack of acting experience make his characterization even more realistic. He is actually portraying himself. The other two stories do not lack in quality. All together they make a nice circle of very well connected stories.

Love and hope in brilliant movie "You carry me"
jefimijadragicevic9 December 2015
I've had great luck to read in media about the Croatian movie titled „You Carry Me" and watch it in cinema in Zagreb, during my trip to Croatia. The most important is the fact, that I didn't hear the silence in the cinema after movie projection. After two and a half hours, I saw people who talked about their opinions, discuss about the movie and that was definitely a great success of the film itself. This movie brings alive three fantastic stories, which describe rarely film narrated relations between daughters and their fathers. I was delighted how those multidimensional, realistic and complex relationships were great processed in this film and how all characters are trying to find their piece of happiness and achievement, in their attempts to self-realization and understanding of the closest people around them.

I assume that the casting for this movie was very demanding job, but film Director and Screenwriter Ivona Juka did the right thing with great casting and we can see a number of good actresses and actors in her film. I would point out great Croatian actresses: Natasa Janjic, Natasa Dorcic, Lana Baric, little girl Helena Beljan and her first role in the film at all. Equally, I would single out great actors, especially Croatian amateur actor Goran Hajdukovic, Slovenian actor Sebastian Cavazza and our famous Serbian actor Vojislav Brajovic in his brilliant role. I am very glad that Serbia is one of the film's co-producers.

With this great casting and film story, with beautiful music, great screenplay, beautiful photography and powerful production, film director and screenwriter Ivona Juka managed to get close to us strong emotions, love and hope, the things we really needed today.

Really really good
laulek29 June 2015
As a Croat, I wasn't really expecting much from the newest Croatian movie You Carry Me, as our filmmaking is rarely exciting and highly interesting. But after exiting the cinema, I was really surprised! The film is excellent, to say at least. It's thoughtful and engaging with highly intelligent directing done by Ivona Juka. The film brilliantly weaves three interconnected stories. Young girl Dora, whose father has returned after a time of absence, Ives, a TV director who spends most of the time caring about her demented father, and Nataša, pregnant woman who is faced with infidelity from her husband. Each story is complete, performances are brilliant and the flow of the film is extremely fluent. This multi-faced story will surely impress you. And don't be discouraged by the length of the movie - this is a modern Croatian masterpiece, and it's worth watching every second!

A profound film that will make you forget prejudices towards the country and cinematography that you do not know - providing you have any.
slavenkadrakulic3 January 2016
At the beginning, there is a chaos. Then main characters start to appear, each with her or his unique life story. They are tender, funny, tragic or brutal. Some stories are connected, some not. As their lives move on in concentric circles,we get involved, take sides, shed tears or laugh. The strongest character for me is Natasa, women who is about to lose everything and yet believes that we carry each other, help each other because this is what life is about. All actors are good, but Natasa Dorcic brings more of herself into her role.It is one of these cases when you have a feeling that the actor is not acting. This is a first feature film from a young Croatian director Ivona Juka. Yet, it is profound film that will make you forget prejudices towards the country and cinematography that you do not know - providing you have any.

„You Carry Me" is art!!!
janabily11 November 2015
This great drama movie „You Carry Me" is, in fact, three parallel and connected big human stories between three daughters and their fathers. Film director Ivona Juka managed to incorporate brilliant cast in sharp and realistic movie. All casts with excellent camera, strong production, film editing and music is giving big contribution to Croatian movie creativity in all, as European and world film art. All brave female characters with unique identity can be some sort of guideline for all of ours not so easy and complicated life choices. „You Carry Me" is the movie which shows us how to travel trough life on the motto cloud-No treason, no surrender! Don't miss this beauty of art!

fantastic story and characters
miloshevili29 June 2015
This movie is an intimate and deeply moving work of art which explores the nature of human relations.Made of three separate but interconnected stories, Juka manages to fragment the story lines in such a way that they don't feel disconnected or broken down. Ivona Juka resembles the likes of Inarritu in her directorial style, and even though i don't like comparing those styles one to another because i believe every great director is great in his own right, i do think that Juka is indeed a great director. Even though this is her directorial debut, she proves to us that we can expect many bright things from her in the future. A complex story, even though a lengthy 2 and a half hours, the movie doesn't give you an excuse to look up your watch, constantly focusing your attention at the events on screen. What i respect the most is, even though the themes explored are rather serious and follow our everyday problems, the whole movie is actually quite uplifting and upbeat, and this sensation follows you after you've exited the theater, when you're thinking about the movie and when you're talking about the movie and it's still with me while i'm here writing this short review. I give the movie a shining 10!

A perfect representation of a father-daughter relationships
kranjcmatijaz3 November 2015
This is a great story about ordinary people! I watched You Carry Me last night at the premiere in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and I am very glad that our country is one of the film's co-producers. Finally, a product of the film industry that brings our region together, and doesn't try to separate it like our politicians are constantly trying to do. The cinematography of this part of Europe is exhausted with war topics, and You Carry Me seems like the light at the end of the tunnel.

Everyday problems we face are finally represented without dramatic exaggeration, they are not made to look fancy, and we believe the story like we believe our own eyes. I like how the three stories intertwine in such a way that leaves enough unsaid to make us curious, but at the same time the director doesn't insult the viewers' intelligence. She films reality exactly like we see it. Life never points out the truly important moments, it is up to us to recognize them, and that is exactly how this film is made.

Dora's role (Helena Beljan) is majestic, this debutant has a great career ahead of her! Using Balašević's song in the film was a brilliant move, maybe the best usage of a song in a film ever. I could watch that scene over and over again, it was such a simple moment with very little words, and yet, everything that needed to be said, was said. It was a perfect representation of a father-daughter relationship, the best in the regional cinematography. Hajduković and Beljan have played their debutant roles brilliantly, and they preformed this scene exceptionally great. In their performance we can see the whole history of their relationship which was never shown in the film. Vedran feels Dora's emotional state while she's standing on the other side of the wall. No matter the distance between them, there is always something that connects them, a father always knows when something's not right. Raw, honest, powerful!

Amazing!
monicaturner-0758428 December 2015
Three women, three stories, three different lives and three different destinies. A ten year old girl with complex family relations after her father's return. She finds her role model in controversial football manager who she quotes and admires. Ives is the director of a popular soap opera. Her everyday life and struggle with other crewman is made even more difficult, as her father suffers from dementia. Not being able to cope, she is falling apart. Natasa is a producer of the same soap opera Ives works on. She's trying to handle production and her own personal problems and pregnancy. The stories are just slightly interconnected but characters have no actual influence on each other. The story itself is great, I'm not sure if the screenplay is adapted or it's an original by the director. I find Ives's story to be the most expressive and best portrayed. Each character has a fully described personality and the director did a fabulous job with the actors (some of them seem to be very famous in their part of the world). I find that to be this film's main strength.

An incredible movie
julenirimun18 April 2016
„You Carry Me" interlace perfectly three histories of three different characters that are deeply marked by their fathers. You could see the three histories in different moments, like three short films, but the way in that they are included in only one feature film gives to this one more strength and it produces that during the two hours and half of film is not boring and it doesn't look like if it's too long. In all the film, this one makes you feel from happiness to sadness for what the characters lives but too hope and hate for what they make and think in different situations.

This film is similar to „De tu ventana a la mía" of Paula Ortiz, in both we find three histories about three women fighters but in the case of „You Carry Me" these womens aren't only in one situation that they have to fight but also they have to learn to coexist with their respectively fathers that, in one or other way and in different moment of the life, they are going to mark their lives.

In conclusion, „You Carry Me" is a great film that i recommend to all the fans of drama films, even if you don't like this kind of film like me, i recommend you this film because this could surprise you.

A definitive must see
mariachicelloplayer29 June 2015
I wholeheartedly recommend watching this movie, all the more considering this is the directors first featured fiction movie. Ivona Juka, the director, is also credited with the movie's screenplay, which is incidentally one of the best i've seen coming from this region. While Croatia's cinematography continues being plagued by constant motives of war and historical detail, Juka takes us away from these accustomed leit-motifs and tells us a story quite unusual for these parts.

The characters don't have a classic happy end, which in my book is a particularly big plus, nor are they in any way stereotypes. These 3 female characters are unique and lifelike in their 3 separate stories.

I once again strongly suggest you go see this feature, because you won't feel disappointed at all, only pleasantly surprised by the sheer brilliance of it.

I forgot the subtitles
geronimothompson18 December 2015
I have to admit, I'm not into films with subtitles, but I'm glad I saw this one. My friend read about it so we went to see it. I was a bit skeptical. But at the end it really turned out great. I's a bit over 2 hours but the story flows very easily so the time flew. I even forgot about the subtitles (and that's not happening on a regular basis :) ) Both the director and the producers are women, but I would never describe it as a chick movie. Far from that. It has an artistic touch that has no gender. You ether feel it or not. I almost sensed all that rocks falling over me. I like the way 3 stories interconnect, but still remain apart. And I like pancakes, as well. hahaha. You will just have to see it for your own.

Intertwining tales of family, life, love, and loss
clairegolec2 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
You Carry Me, is a Croatian drama that follows the stories of three characters and their loved ones.

The film is written and directed by Croatian filmmaker Ivona Juka. Juka was supported throughout the development of the film by her sister and producer Anita Juka. Together, the sisters took on universal themes like family, life, love, and loss.

Set in a frigid Zagreb, Croatia's capital city, the story explores and intertwines the lives of three different families.

We're first introduced to tomboy Dora and her family. Dora (Helena Beljan) has a love for soccer. Her love; however, for her family is not as passionate and is more complex. Tensions rise as the police raid the family home and Dora's mother Lidija (Natasa Janjic Medancic) has an affair with her boss. Through Lidija and her job on the TV soap Prisoners of Happiness, we are introduced to Ives (Lana Baric) who is the soap's director and Natasa (Natasa Dorcic) who is the soap's producer.

When we meet Ives, she is on the edge of an emotional breakdown as she struggles to direct her long running TV series and take care of her Alzheimer's sufferer father Ivan (Vojislav Brajovic).

We run into a seemingly stable Natasa when she attempts to save a young man's life. As her story deepens, layers of pregnancy, infidelity, and terminal illness are revealed. As Natasa's world begins to end, she decides to confront her estranged father and find closure.

All three leading ladies carry their fathers, but neglect to carry and confront themselves.
