A BIT DUMB BUT I ENJOYED IT ANYWAY!
plasmapilot10 August 2021
Sometimes a girl just wants to watch a mindless movie after a stressful day & this filled my need. This unbelievable plot was silly, but the acting was good and I appreciated the simplicity. There's nothing like a simple flick to release tension ....no need to closely pay attention. Nice to laugh at the silliness while still being invested in the outcome!

Decent light fare. Good performances, a plot that holds together.

Good, clean, Cheesy, fun!

This film is soo Cheesy! But it was soo much fun. No bad language, no sex, nudity, or gore. No woke agenda. Just a funny movie. There should be tons more like this. 😃

Funny and suspenseful
Gordon-1116 February 2016
This film tells the story of a salesman who gets mistaken to be a private investigator. He is hired to investigate the disappearance of a famous computer game programmer. Hilarity ensues when he is clearly out of his depth for the increasingly complicated crime.

"No Clue" is really quite entertaining because the main character, Leo, is clearly unintelligent. His responses are silly for the situations he encounters, as he has no clue what he's doing. Yet the woman hiring him send to have no clue about his incompetence either. The whole premise is funny and at the same time suspenseful and mysterious. The mystery is maintained even through the numerous jokes. When the ending reveals what really happened, I think the plot is quite clever in making many characters suspects, but only one is the real crook. I enjoyed watching it.

Enjoyable, but probably a film best seen by Butt lovers.
planktonrules19 May 2022
"No Clue" is a film written and starring Brent Butt...a Canadian comedian who gained fame for his stand-up comedy as well as the Canadian TV show "Corner Gas" (which I love). However, few know of his here in the States...and it's a shame as he is a funny guy. That being said...this film really appeals to the Butt fans out there and others, well, might not be so impressed.

Butt plays Leo, a guy who looks and acts little hike a hero. However, a woman comes to see him and acts as if he's a private detective (who actually is in another office)...and, bizarrely, he doesn't tell her who he really is and agrees to take her case! This is, frankly, because she's pretty and he's smitten. What's next? Just see the film.

If you are not a Butt lover, you probably will see this as more of a time-passer...a decent enough film if you have nothing else to watch. But, if you are patient and appreciate Butt's odd humor, you may just like it a lot. Regardless, you could do a lot worse.

A Good Story That Deserved a Better Lead Actor
claudio_carvalho6 June 2014
In Canada, a woman named Kyra (Amy Smart) goes to the office of the middle-aged clumsy salesman Leo Falloon (Brent Butt) by mistake believing that he is a private detective. She hires him to help her to find her missing brother Milles Severeign and Leo is so spellbound by the blonde that he does not tell her that he is not who she is looking for. Leo decides to pose of private detective and he is involved in a complicated scheme of computer game corporations seeking high profits.

"No Clue" is a dark comedy with a good story that deserved a better lead actor. Brent Butt wrote a good screenplay but unfortunately he is neither funny nor pleasant on the screen. The resolution of the murder is not consistent with the character Leo that is not bright. My vote is four.

Not a clue
knights695 June 2014
I didn't go into this movie with high expectations and really wasn't disappointed, I'm not sure if this was supposed to be a comedy, drama or what and I only got as far as the first half hour before I found it to painful to watch anymore, the laughs the acting was so wooden it sounded like all the cast where literally reading from their scripts as they went, and the plot well I'm still trying to work that out which is a shame because I liked Brent Butt in Corner Gas which is the main reason I saw this movie and it was original....this is not. Amy Smarts role as the damsel in distress is average at best which probably has more to do with the poor screenplay than her acting ability and David Koechner is not much better as the friend/sidekick. If you like a movie that has clumsy endless old one-liners and innuendo then you might enjoy this, if not then look for something else

It just couldn't get there
david-skato21 August 2021
The story was good but the execution failed. It seems to try to overdo it with the jokes. At times a joke is funny then they keep going to ruin it. They also tried to do way too many jokes scene after scene. The film was right at the top of being good but just couldn't get there. I didn't mind the main guy so much but he did try to hard at times and the comedy seemed forced at times. It sucks that it had so much potential but just wasn't that entertaining.

Always clever, always funny, never offensive
I discovered Brent Butt's Corner Gas, Hiccups, and Corner Gas Animated just this year. Being in Texas, there's not a lot of Canadian programming that comes my way. No Clue is a fresh and funny take on the film noir genre. The "detective" isn't necessarily bumbling, he's just out of his depth / element. While I don't need my entertainment to be squeaky clean, it is refreshing to find something that makes me laugh without having to be offensive.

low level humor
SnoopyStyle28 May 2016
Beautiful damsel Kyra (Amy Smart) comes in and hires Leo Falloon (Brent Butt) to find her missing video game designer brother Milles Severeign. The problem is that he's not actually a private detective. He's really a specialty products salesman. Ernie (David Koechner) is his friend. He's taken with the beauty and accepts the case. He finds a dead body. Kyra seduces him to continue investigating. Reese Horn (Kirsten Prout) claims to be Milles' girlfriend.

The directing is strictly unimpressive TV production level style. The humor is dead panned from Brent Butt. He's not a big performer and that holds this back. In his show, he's more or less a regular nobody. He's perfectly likable but he's not cinematic enough. It's a low grade movie with some light humor.

I like all |Canadian movies. I enjoy anything with Brett Butt starring in all things Canadian. So this movie was a perfect combination of Canadian movie with Brett Butt starring in a Canadian movie. The acting of all the actors was really good. I think we have a superior talent pool in Canada. I also think that Brett Butt is very comedic. Seven more lines of text to go. If I were more acquainted with the private detective genre of the 50's, I am sure there are references to movies of this time era. The gumshoe, is the correct word I think. So he played the part perfectly. So did his friend, David Koechner. Of course the diner scene always makes me think of Corner Gas. Enjoyable light hearted fluffy entertainment. Why not?

For those into dumb
Snootz7 October 2021
In the first 20 minutes, the funniest line was, "Her breath was warm, like a fat guy's armpit on a hot summer night." Uh... yeah.

I am always wary of a film written and directed by the main actor. I get the feeling the folk who like this are primarily Brent Butt fans; the reviews seem to validate that feeling. Non-fans may not be so enthusiastic. The "comedy" seems regularly forced and un-funny. Like Jerry Lewis and other comics, one either loves the gags or gags at the gags. I found myself in the later category.

The occasional witty script (and there are some semi-humorous lines from time to time) couldn't save this from shutdown at 20 minutes, which was the maximum time and idiocy my cringe factor could take. Mr. Butt, the Buttman, the Buttster, the Big Buttola... well, nuff said. One can only take so much of that. It may have wound up being a good reel for all I know (or a very bad one), but I've grown tired of gambling on movies that have trouble getting to any semblance of actual plot. There are more films on my list than I can watch in a year; moved on to something more promising. Which honestly, would be almost anything.

pretty bad -- barely watchable; Sorta like a Chevy Chase knockoff--with no Chevy
johnral32118 October 2021
The feel to this movie is akin to many Chevy Chase movies, except the delivery of the main guy (who wrote the script) is not quite as funny somehow. So we're left with a bumbling, wise-cracking lead actor with lines that go flat. The dialogue is poor, and many of the scenes are just implausible and weird. E.g. Why does the attractive boss' daughter hang out with the nerdy main character? And would the lead actress really use an average Joe to do private investigator work? (And how could he think that she came to him by mistake? -- I mean, ... his business must have its name on the door.) The lead actress is approached by two guys in a bar, whom she spurns, only to have the guys say they will beat up her boyfriend when he arrives; what logical and common behavior. In another scene, the lead actress is making a phone call during the day, but the scene was clearly shot at night... In the opening scene, the lead actor stands up from his desk and bumps his knee, to show us that he's clumsy. Then he offers his client water, only to realize 2 seconds later that he does not have any water. (haha) And there's the nearly constant background music to remind us that we're in a comedy-mystery, just in case we forget. This is not totally unwatchable, but it's close.

This guy is supposed to be funny?
mafdenver8 October 2021
I'd never heard of the lead actor. But I could tell by the way he was rambling and throwing out dumb ad libs that he considered himself quite the comedian. Too funny to stick to a script or a plot. Evidently he's very big in Canada? A shame - because this could have been a funny mistaken-identity little movie.

Goofy Film Noir Ignore Bad Reviews!
Phantom_Duck21 June 2014
I gave this film an 8 for no other reason than I smiled the entire way through, it was certainly not brilliant like an 8 should be but it was light hearted farce that I enjoyed more than most films I have seen recently.

The plot starts as basic film noir, femme fatale arrives at private dick's office in crisis, only problem is it is the office next door and the guy is a nerdy novelty sales man Very well written and never taking itself seriously, poking fun at the genre with horrible self narrations and bizarre interactions it reminded of movies like Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, The Man Who Knew Too Little and The Man With One Red Shoe.

Best yet were no car chases in a modern detective film! People that gave this flick poor marks simply have no sense of humor! I'll watch it again!

Not Funny
dgleblanc4 November 2019
This is the kind of comedy(?) that the Canadian Film industry put out in their infancy - bad. Brett Butt is not funny. Would this film had been better with another lead actor? Maybe, but only marginally.

It's just not that funny
Wizard-88 January 2017
Despite starring (and being written by) Brent Butt, who was the star in the highly rated Canadian sitcom "Corner Gas", "No Clue" was only given a small theatrical release in Canada (and got a very tacky- looking poster to boot.) Watching the movie, it's pretty easy to see why the distributor was not very gung ho. It fails due to one big problem, that being that the movie simply isn't funny. At its best it just gets to be mildly cute, certainly never hilarious or even provoking mild chuckles out of the audience. Much of the humor is written to be pretty predictable and familiar.

Butt's screenplay certainly shoulders most of the blame for the unfunny nature of the movie, but Butt also stumbles in the lead role. His shtick of coming across as a somewhat dumb motormouth gets old very fast, and he quickly becomes somewhat irritating and annoying.

To top it off, while the movie thankfully does not have the tacky and cheap feeling of most other Canadian movies, it all the same has the look and feel of a television production instead of a theatrical movie.

Is there anything good to say about this movie? Well, unlike many Canadian films, it admits to being set in Canada and thankfully at the same time does not make a big deal about it. Though all the same, most Canadians will consider the movie as a whole yet another example of the poor state of the Canadian film industry.

Unless you're stoned, don't bother...
pessimistus26 January 2017
Blah. Predictable cheese-fest. If you just want something to fall asleep to without missing anything, sure this'll work. Otherwise don't bother wasting time on this. Limited story line, obvious outcome. No thinking involved. Apparently my 'review' doesn't contain enough lines. Well neither does this movie. Go read a book or something. This really is just fodder.I mean it's not so bad as I would copy it to another drive, 'cos deleting it just once wasn't enough, it's just paste. Glue something or paint something & watch it dry. Same effect really. I was happily drinking myself to sleep & this movie couldn't keep the attention of an A.D.D. squirell. Eat more nuts. They're good for you!

Absolutely hilarious!
shominy-491-6523558 March 2015
We did not know what to expect when we rented this film last year. I'm sad and embarrassed to say that, at that time, we were not familiar with actor Brent Butt but we immediately loved him in this film! We enjoyed every second of this comedy! Brent is hilarious as the unassuming salesman accidentally thrown into the life of a P.I. David Koechner is hilarious in every movie - and a real treat as Brent's crazy best friend. After we rented this movie and enjoyed it so much, we had to buy the DVD, and we've watched it twice since then. A good comedy like this can be watched again and again. There are too many hilarious moments to even comment on. The editing is perfect and the movie moves so fast - never a dull moment! The clever writing/dialogue and Brent's narration during his detective work is hilarious! The entire cast is absolutely perfect! This film will not disappoint! The world needs more comedies like this! Enjoy! P.S. Please make a sequel, Brent!

A Good Canadian Comedy
QuickMilt3 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Brent Butt (Corner Gas) plays Leo Falloon, a bumbling middle-aged logo salesman who's so smitten by the mysterious blonde named Kyra (Amy Smart) who asks him to help find her missing brother that he neglects to tell her she's in the wrong office. That sets up a long-winded plot about corporate espionage in the computer game world with steely eyed corporate chiefs and an over sized goon. Butt is a decent word-spinner and self-deprecating funny man, but the decision to have the rest of the cast play it straight maybe is not the best decision. A few scenes of Leo Fallon exchanging banter with his buddy Ernie (David Koechner of Get Smart & Anchorman 1 and 2), prove more rewarding than the cliché murder plot that occupies most of the movie. The overall rating of the movie is good, taken you are ready for a little bit of smirking chuckles. No Clue is definitely worth watching, you should also have a look at his performance in Corner Gas which is very original.

Hysterical! (but only if you like Corner Gas)
castor_b31 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Alright, listen up. Or read up, since you're reading. And since you can read, that should mean your ability to process words is working. That's actually a good start. This is a very funny movie- and no, Brent Butt is not going to win any acting awards, but his delivery as an unsophisticated but clever novelty salesperson mistaken for a Dick is perfect. Amy Smart as the damsel with more to her story is the perfect straight-man to Leo's bumbling, and I liked Kechner as his friend a funny soundboard. And for fans of Corner Gas, Brent's other half is funny and very Wanda-esque. And for those who aren't Corner Gas fans, don't watch. Your sense of humor isn't properly suited for this film.

An Honest Comedy
busboytravels11 May 2020
This is a movie about Brent Butt. Well, as much about Brent as Corner Gas and Hiccups and his stand ups and his blogs - there's a facet of him in each. What makes Brent great - and thereby this movie - is staying true to his core. He is always that nice guy you'd love to cuddle but never make love TO. He'll have you laughing right after he's got you in tears. Brent's range of emotions seems endless. #7 in a family of 7, that's where he learned his craft. At the time it was probably survival, but that youth was never misspent on Brent. What a guy. What a Movie. Remember, it's a slapstick comedy with almost no action. Great Stuff. ...psst - who did it? you'll never guess, because there is no butler.

Butt's clever buffoonery makes this an amusing tale
highlama29 August 2021
I didn't recognize the name Brent Butt but was interested in seeing Amy Smart. Now, I wasn't watching the movie so much as I was listening to it and I soon realized that the main character's voice was familiar - I looked up and it was that guy from Corner Gas - Brent Butt. After three seasons of that sitcom I grew weary of the repetition but this was a much better vehicle for Butt's often self-deprecating humor, though I suppose if the movie had gone on much longer it may have become tiresome as well.

The story is, to a degree, predictable but there are enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. The acting is overall good and it of course has that Canadian wholesomeness that doesn't offend. By that I mean there was no going out of the way to ingratiate themselves to special interest groups, or the vulgar.

In the end it's solid movie with flashes of brilliance as well as banality but ultimately landing in the "fun for the whole family" category.

I quite enjoyed it.
gatorgus481 January 2022
The mystery was good, at least as far as these type of low budget movies go. I didn't think it was that predictable as some suggest, hindsite is 20/20.

I may not have laughed out loud more than a couple of times, but a lot of the dry comments by Butt's wit had me smiling and chuckling through the movie.

Amy Smart is certainly easy on the eyes and she did a fine job. The 'bad guys' may have hammed it up a bit, but easy to overlook in this type of movie.

As one usually says about movies like this, it isn't "On the Waterfront", but it was quite entertaining.

Good example of Brent Butt Canadian humour
whoareyouanonymous21 February 2021
Lots of chuckles for a dumb but fun (Brent Butt's special kind of) comedy!

I'd definitely tune in occasionally if it was a TV show premise! HINT - HINT!
