Happy beginning of June, everyone! Now that summer is just about in full swing, we have a look at the horror and sci-fi VOD releases coming our way this month, in case you prefer to beat the heat from the comfort of your own couch while catching up on movies.
June’s VOD titles are an eclectic bunch, with a little bit of something for every kind of fan out there. The month kicks off with the release of the sleep paralysis thriller Be Afraid today, and then things pick back up on June 6th with a handful of titles making their way to digital platforms, including Aaron’s Blood, Dark Signal, Besetment, and one of my most anticipated indie movies of the year, Let Me Make You A Martyr, which co-stars Marilyn Manson.
The following week, both The Belko Experiment and Camera Obscura make their VOD bows, and just a few short days later,...

Another year and another incredible Fantasia experience. Though every year has it’s share of gems, 2014 has come out as being particularly strong as far as innovative and daring filmmaking. This is a selection of just five films that impressed me, and I didn’t even include some of the repertory choices like Ghost in the Shell and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which played to sold out audiences. More than just a genre film festival, Fantasia caters a strong community of passionate film fans and makers.
5. Remember Me (Jean-François Asselin)
Fantasia has always been a festival where some of the best films are some of the most unexpected. Running at three weeks long, with well over 200 films playing, it seems inevitable that something will jump out of nowhere to surprise you. Screening before the awful Aux yeux des vivants, Remember Me is a Quebec comedy-horror short film about a young...

Bag Boy Lover Boy
Written by Toni Comas and Andres Torres
Directed by Andres Torres
USA, 2014
Made in the tradition of the New York underground, Bag Boy Lover Boy is a portrait of contemporary frustration. Albert is a pitiful hot dog vendor who soon finds himself intertwined in the bizarre world of fetish photography. Albert’s aspirations are centered on his desire to win the affections of a frequent customer at his stall, and her apparent love for art. Raw, funny and twisted, the film rips through the perceived comfort of modern living by putting focus on one of society’s outcasts. Albert is not just a sad sack, he’s more than a little slow and more than a little different.
Albert’s trajectory over the course of the film is what really sells it. Brought to life by Swedish amateur actor Jon Wachter, there is an uncomfortable naturalism...
