The series takes a trip back in time to Patrick Jane's introduction to the CBI unit. Filmed in dark somewhat grainy tones, this surreal approach effectively showcases an initial rough draft of Patrick Jane who evolves to define his trademark observational skills that become the essence of the series. What's very interesting is that the story line and approach to solving the crime in this episode are augmented by the effective use of a pseudo-courtroom style approach that demonstrates the skills of the shows beloved protagonist who never ceases to amaze both the characters and the audience. My hat off to Simon Baker for a fine production.

Red Dawn... mystery man?

We now know the genesis of Jane's involvement at the CBI, and how he went from "the asylum" to the CBI (in S01 E10, "Red Brick and Ivy" we get the introduction of his psychiatrist, Sophie Miller; actress Elizabeth Röhm) and learn that Jane had been in an asylum.
We also learn the "who and when" of the FBI's interest in the CBI's progress on the Red John case. The "who"; director Alexa Schultz (actress Polly Walker), the "when"; the day Jane "officially" became a consultant at the CBI. Which leads to a call to Virgil Minelli (played by actor Gregory Itzin) from Schultz; revealing how Red John got his inside contact at the FBI (as Red John mentioned in S04 E24) to keep him up to date on the CBI's progress of his case.
What's peaked my interest is when Shultz hangs up from her call with Minelli, she comments "done" to a mysterious man who replies "thank you"? Who is this man? Is it Read John; have we finally seen the real Red John after (about) 100 episodes or merely another disciple, friend, etc.?

Years ago, Patrick Jane arrives in CBI and meets Teresa Lisbon requesting Red John's files. He uses his abilities to force the old agent to punch him in the nose and Virgil Minelli lets him access the files to avoid a lawsuit. Further, he invites Patrick to go to a crime scene, where the son of a judge was found murdered. Patrick finds the killer and Minelli invites him to join CBI team as a consultant.
"Red Dawn" should be the first episode of "The Mentalist", showing how he joined the agency. As usual, he finds the killer of the son of a judge and is invited to be consultant of CBI. My vote is eight.
