Excellent Australian (quirky) Comedy-Detective Show.....Refreshingly different
ericredding4717 March 2013
I really enjoy this show and give it 8.5/10. It's just not predictable, well-acted, tight editing & camera work and a great script.

To start with I had low expectations as the promo was lame and the leader actor "Shaun Micallef" I felt would never be able to hold together an hour show, as I had seen him prior as a comedy compare. As it happens the series was written by Shaun & Jason Stephens and they have done a great jobÂ… well at least until episode 4 "Atlas Drugged" which is when I typed this.

To put it simply this is a truly original spin on the murder-cop show genre in which the plot whilst still clever is really a simple elevator to the clever & subtle humour, derived from delightfully timed lines and fresh comedy writing. Watch it, this is a good show and there are so few on free to air!!

Husband and Wife Crime Cleaners
pensman7 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The premise is clever: a husband and wife operate a toxic clean company whose chief purpose is putting crime scenes back to their original condition. But somehow the duo get pulled into the who done it and end up figuring out what happened. This is all done tongue in cheek so you aren't expected to take it seriously. The laughs that occur are mostly chuckles and the crimes are interesting enough to keep you watching. The cast is fine and for the most part the stories come across as a sort of updated Tuppence and Tommy much like the older series Partners in Crime. Shaun Micallef is fine as the husband who uses his seemingly massive store of factoids to see connections among clues. And Kat Stewart is believable as the more cautious partner who believes it best to have the police nearby rather than go charging into a situation that could prove dangerous. Lucy Honigman plays their niece who finds herself, usually unwillingly, participating in her relatives' adventures.

You Too Can Be A Murder Investigator! (even if you have another full-time career)
volare128 October 2021
"Mr. And Mrs. Murder" is a pleasant enough series, if you can get past the silly premise. Another entry in the by-now-rather-tired "Civilians Who Are Better At Police Work Than The Police" genre - you know, where the main characters have full-time private sector jobs that in actuality would keep them much too busy to do anything else, if they *did* their jobs instead of spending most of their time playing amateur detective - this one offers as said civilians Charlie and Nicola Buchanan, a husband and wife team of industrial cleaners who specialize in crime scenes. Hired to tidy up murder locales and restore them to normal well after the police forensic team has already gone over everything, they are inexplicably able to turn up all sorts of physical evidence and background facts that the real detectives somehow overlooked or conveniently didn't follow up on. And, of course, they wind up solving the cases. Yeah. Right....

We're talking well-trodden ground here, in the tradition of "Murder, She Wrote", "Rosemary And Thyme", "Father Brown", etc. The writing is actually decent though and does a good job of avoiding clichés, and the mysteries are pretty original and manage to hold some surprises. But the premise just becomes more and more absurd as the episodes progress and we watch our protagonists - whose job, I will point out again, is to CLEAN - staging re-enactments, following and/or questioning suspects, conducting unauthorized searches of private property (usually after gaining access under false pretenses), and in general demonstrating an almost pathologically obsessive preoccupation with matters completely outside their professional jurisdiction. One begins to wonder: If they really enjoy detective work so much, why not just *become* private investigators already?

One might also wonder whether anyone in the local constabulary ever takes any initiative at all in trying to uncover the truth behind the crimes, because it certainly never seems like that's the case. In the other series mentioned above the police are portrayed as capable, or at least functional, but in this show the only detective we ever see reports to the Buchanans to share confidential info and get updates and instructions, almost as if he is working under their supervision rather than the other way around.

Shaun Micallef and Kat Stewart do have a very good chemistry as the leads, even if their characters are always a little too "on" and their banter a little formulaic. Potentially more fun are Jonny Pasvolsky as the couple's nice-guy police contact/friend and Lucy Honigman as the reluctant niece who gets dragged into their shenanigans. It would be nice if the two of them got more screen time and more to do.

I suppose for some the show will pass muster as a disposable diversion, but I'm now just halfway through the first and only season and I find myself losing interest. I'm still not sure if I will watch all the remaining episodes. Grade: B-.

Wonderful
jax71314 April 2015
Half-way through the DVD set I had to stop and sing the praises of Mr. & Mrs. Murder. It's a big shame this series is one-season show. I'm a big fan of "who dun its" and find myself much more entertained by mysteries and crime dramas produced in countries other than the U.S. This show is a delight, from its two lead characters to its unique murder cases to its location shots of Australia.

Thank goodness I have the DVDs as I've been able to pause them to recover from laughing out loud and not miss any of the story or other lines. In the tradition of The Thin Man movies, we have a devoted Mr. & Mrs. who have a great relationship, so we're not subjected to season after season of that boring formula of "will they or won't they" when you know they always will. It's a relief to be spared this malarkey and, instead, see a couple who already have got it right. The murder cases revolve around unusual methods and atypical victims and suspects, bringing a fresh challenge to the viewer.

One might think a rating of 9 out of 10 is excessive for a lighthearted show, but the humor, mysteries, and stellar crafting of the lead roles makes this fantastic escapist TV. It's such a disappointment that there's only one season of it.

refreshing and funny
kmacmillan88015 March 2013
As a fan of the 'who dun it 'genre I love this show , from the groovy credits and music to the locations and story lines. Shaun is a genius. I love how they play the characters and how the stories unfold . Especially the quirky humor in the 1st episode with their mate in the wheelchair who seemed to know a lot more about murder than was healthy to know. Melbourne seems to be a great location for these plots to play out. I do hope the characters will have to travel for work and more cases so we can see more of Victoria. By and large I haven't liked any other Australia productions since the 80's comedy scene. Keep 'em coming' I say !

Intelligent and Quirky Aussie Drama
tradewinds6815 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I generally dislike most Australian television series, however, some excellent hidden gems occasionally appear, as Mr and Mrs Murder has shown. Shaun Micallef has never been one of my favourite TV personalities, so it was a pleasant surprise when I tuned in to find him playing an interesting, funny and unique role as crime scene cleaner, Charlie Buchanan. He brings something special to the role, as does Kat Stewart as his on-screen wife, Nicola, an equally quirky and funny character.

Additionally, Lucy Honigman plays their frequently long-suffering niece, Jess, who is roped in to help them solve their cases and be an unwilling participant in garage crime scene re-enactments. Jonny Pasvolsky also plays a great role as police detective, Peter Vinetti, his dead-pan and occasionally confused character adding value as a foil for Micallef and Stewart's characters.

There are twists and turns in every episode, leaving the viewer completely baffled on occasion as to the culprit, and the scriptwriters have used exceptional humour throughout. Some of the one-liners left me laughing to the point of crying. I definitely give this show a thumbs-up.

Austrailian TV, real quality
willieb-38 April 2018
When you read more than 1/2 dozen reviews of an obscure TV series, and they are all positive, it kind of makes you take notice. And notice should be taken of this little gem. It stacks up respectfully with Nick and Nora, Mr & Mrs North and just about any amateur sleuth~husband/wife teaming. It does raise 2 questions - why are they so much better at making quality, entertaining television series in Australia, New Zealand and the UK then we are in the states? The other question - why do the shows in Australia stop before their time? Mr & Mrs Murder ran 13 episodes. Unlike American series, each episode stands alone, and can be enjoyed (no recurring bad guy or sinister underlying subplot ie Red John from the mentalist or Jack from The Profiler). But then it just went away - no 2nd season (series). can't figure that one out. More confusing was the end of the Dr Blake Mysteries. Ratings were great, fan base was strong - but they cancelled (or didn't renew) it at the top of it's form. My recommendation; track down Mr & Mrs Murder but don't binge watch it, take it one episode at a time. Just about the perfect blend of mystery and comedy.

Mr & Mrs Murder - Highly Recommended
jimmullinaux22 September 2017
It appears the Austrailians are every bit as good at crafting entertaining mysteries as their as their English cousins. A case in point is "Mr & Mrs Murder", a light-hearted Austrailian cozy mystery originally aired in 2013. Shaun Micallef plays Charlie Buchanan and Kat Stewart plays his wife Nicola. Together they operate a crime scene cleaning service, making them ideally suited for finding evidence and clues overlooked by the police. Micallef and Stewart imbue their characters with enough quirks and foibles that makes them entertaining and just slightly over-the-top. My wife and I have viewed this series many times and find something new and enjoyable with each viewing. Highly recommended!

I want MORE
csdcsdcsd20034 July 2020
Mr & Mrs Murder not only clean crime scenes but also solve crimes with their very bright witty ways. I love the opening credits (music and graphics) - reminds me of the droll 1960s British Avengers, but done with with mops and hazmat suits - wonderful in every way. I read somewhere that the one and only Series ended due to the leading man's flagging energy (he was in his 60s at the time and appeared in almost every scene). Wish this show could be continued with the wonderful qualities that make it so enjoyable. I discovered it on Acorn TV (USA).

bland whodunit
cherold27 March 2021
I just watched a little of the first episode, and it was just the most ordinary thing. The couple's banter was bland and conventional, everything about it felt like it had been done a million times before.

I Love This Show
anneefda-4584329 June 2019
I have just watched it for the first time and was so disappointed to find it only ran one season.

This couple was quirky and fun and got each other the way you always hope your other half will. This is definitely worth watching.

I hope the executive was that decided to cancel this show was also canceled. Being 6 years ago, it's probably to get the show back with the same writers, actors etc but someone should try.

A Hidden Gem, Sorry There Is Only One Season
altereggo12320 December 2021
I haven't quite gotten to the end of these, but I'm already sad that I'm running out of episodes. The murders are quite clever, as is the dialogue. The writers are very intelligent and very silly, in a good way, whether having the characters quibble about the difference between "irony" and "coincidence" or commenting on widespread adultery among actors. ("The theatre is a hotbed of hotbeds.") It's also a relief to find a show that resolves one crime per episode, so you don't have to binge a whole season to get closure. An excellent comedy/mystery.

This is so much fun!
chickory728 May 2020
I just (2020) discovered Mr & Mrs Murder and so enjoy it! The characters are so much fun and seem to really enjoy each other. The plots are well formed. It is a thoroughly enjoyable show and I am so sad that there are only 13 episodes. Well at least there are that many!

Love love love it!
abondgirl6 July 2021
I have had a hard time finding a favorite show since Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I loved that series so much. It is hard finding something that both my 85 year old mother and I can both watch and like. Last night we watched a few episodes of Mr. And Mrs. Murder and loved it! It is refreshing, light, funny and the Australian scenery is beautiful. I wish there were more than 13 episodes. The acting is great and the guest stars are interesting and fun. Love love love it!!!!

Another top Aussie series
Jondy-9837424 August 2020
Loved this series when it first aired and I'm loving watching it again on Stan! It's a shame only one season was made as it's such a light-hearted and enjoyable who-done-it. Shaun Micallef and Kat Stewart are brilliant, as always.

Surprisingly awesome
sgw55513 October 2021
I tend to watch formulaic British/Australian murder mysteries (Midsomer Murders, My Life is Murder, Death in Paradise, etc) at night when I'm cleaning the house, so when this turned up on AcornTV I tried it, with relatively low expectations.

But by the middle of the second episode I was totally hooked. Whatever combination of writing/acting/chemistry is happening between the two main characters is fantastic and somehow totally different from the usual stuff in this vein. Instead of the usual unrequited love/stupid flirting + goofy sidekicks that plagues series like Agatha Raisin, these two seem like a real couple who genuinely like each other in a totally non-dramatic way.

Not sure why anyone's criticizing the premise (that crime-scene cleaners would do detective work) since it's no more unrealistic than 3 novelist aunts (like Queens of Mystery) or gardeners (Rosemary & Thyme). Heck, after 22 years, pretty much everyone in Midsomer has been murdered and no one seems to notice that.

Anyway, my only regret is that this only has 13 episodes and now it's too old to be revived.

Definitely recommended.

Delightfully lighthearted who-dun-it
zac-493-47905825 January 2022
Writing is sharp, acting is on point, and the chemistry between the leads is great.

It's a shame there's only 1 season, but c'est la vie - 13 episodes of this is still a fantastic treat!

Another Aussie gem!
catnapbc13 December 2022
I must concur with others here who appreciate the original, self-deprecating, and totally hilarious show that really deserves more seasons. Intelligent and grown-up dialogue pulled off with just the right level of 'seriousness' and wink-wink by the 2 main leads. Nice to see a couple who are in synch and actually like eachother instead of the far-too-common combos of antagonistic types or lop-sided teams dealing with crime. Every episode has something unique and riveting to watch and listen too. Be sure to have subtitles as you don't want to miss any of the sometimes subtle droll comments. A feel-good 'drama' that is light-hearted by not silly. Enjoy!!

More brilliant Australian dramedy.
joner-8915826 August 2022
I have watched this several times just to keep finding the brilliant quips between the cast that I missed before since it's so fast moving. I could have watched several seasons of this just for great interaction between the main characters and the off the cuff comments.

Only one season 😩
tatie-4470115 February 2022
Great show. I love the formula. The leads are witty and funny. It is so disappointing when I find a series I enjoy and then find it only made it a couple of seasons. I have gotten through most of the murder mystery series on Acorn and decided to give it a try. If you like My life is murder, midsomer murders, or any other cozy mystery series it is worth a watch.

Why wasn't this renewed!!!!??????
gmfreeman18 September 2022
This is just an excellent Australian series...very quick-witted dialogue...wonderful characters...great writing...I just don't understand why it was only on for one season...watch it, you'll love it!

Love the interplay between characters...still trying to fiqure out the pet names of the married couple (he calls her "Fizzy", she calls him "Chaka Khan"), and her niece Jess is wonderful, along with the police detective, who apparently used to have a "thing" for the wife...great interplay between all of them! Interesting modes of death, also, ala "Midsomer Murders"...since it's been 9 years since the last episode, I'm not holding my breath for season 2 on the horizon :-)))
