SPOILER: It is possible. The Doctor has retired and become a recluse and is no longer interested in saving the universe and fighting evil, after suffering the losses of his friends Amy Pond and Rory Williams and is forced out of his self imposed exile to do battle with The Great Intelligence and The Snowmen and foil their plot. In The Dark Knight Rises, Bruce Wayne has retired as the masked vigilante Batman and has become a recluse, after his childhood friend Rachel Dawes is killed by The Joker and taking the fall for the death of District Attorney Harvey Dent, by covering up the truth behind his death. But Bruce Wayne is forced out of seclusion to become Batman once more, where the masked terrorist Bane and The League of Shadow threaten to destroy Gotham City and Batman sets out to foil Bane's plot.
