In a film with more of a suggested narrative, we see a cat going through its day, nuzzling its owner, playing with things, puddling and scratching at furniture and the like. The difference between this film and the billion other cat videos on the internet is that this one is made up of animation which is partial and seems constructed of suggestive strokes of a paint brush to create shapes rather than full characters and objects. With this approach we have a cat which I more recognizable for its basic structure and movement than it is for its face or details – at times it almost seems like a skeleton as it seems to be less and less in this world, not those from the Funnybones books, but still.
The theme appears to be about death, in particular of the cat. I am not sure if this is the case or the director had such an experience but for an old cat it can be this way. I have had a few older animals die and there is a sense that they seek out comfort in old things and old places as they sense it is coming; not easy to describe but it feels like that a bit here – although perhaps I am projecting too much. Even without this, the film has animation that makes it engaging to watch because of the style and structure. It does feel to be about sense of things rather than full description and as such watching it has a familiar feel even if the objects themselves remain visually strange – we know these things even if we don't. On top of that it is very beautiful to watch as the movement and style of animation is attractive and interesting.
