British production company Studio Lambert optioned the rights to make UK and US versions of the Dutch programme. The British Broadcasting Corporation commissioned Studio Lambert to produce the UK version for them, and NBC Universal ordered a US version for their Peacock platform. Both versions were filmed back-to-back at the same Scottish castle, each with their own host and contestants. Claudia Winkleman is the presenter for the UK series and Scottish actor Alan Cummings is hosting the US version.
An Australian version of The Traitors created by Endemol Shine Australia has aired. Like the UK version, the Australian version contained non-celebrity contestants. The Australian series will be returning for a second season with a new set of participants.
The Traitors has been a huge hit for the BBC, and it was confirmed it would return for a second season with Claudia Winkleman as the presenter again.
Throughout the series a fleet of Land Rover 4x4 vehicles are used to transport the contestants between locations. The on-board cameras frequently show that the contestants are not wearing their seat belts, which would be illegal on UK public roads. However, the vehicles are not on public roads, they are on the private roads of the castle's estate, and those roads are closed to other vehicles during filming; therefore, the law on wearing seat belts does not apply.
The majority of filming for both the UK and US series takes place in and around Ardross Castle in Scotland, about a 30-minute drive north of Inverness. The 19th-century castle sits on over 100 acres of parkland on the banks of the River Alness.
