While "Dean Slater: Resident Adviser" is not amongst the worst of teen comedies, then it is neither amongst the best of them.

"Dean Slater: Resident Adviser" is a fairly adequate movie. It has some good and bright moments here and there, but this is hardly the type of comedy that will have you in tears from laughing. Sure, there were moments from time to time that proved funny and broke laughs. But in overall, then the movie wasn't riding high on laughs and comedy.

The story is straight forward, easy to follow and basically what you would expect from a movie such as this.

However, what carried the movie was the gallery of characters. The characters in the movie were well-portrayed and fleshed out on the screen. But characters are, of course, almost nothing without talented actors to bring the characters to life on the screen. And I will say that the people on the cast list in "Dean Slater: Resident Adviser" were doing good jobs with their given roles.

While not a movie that will leave a lasting impression, then "Dean Slater: Resident Adviser" is good entertainment for a single watching.

Unique B Movie
gpknopp31 August 2013
Movies about the American college experience are silly, and this raises the bar. The reality of the American college environment is unreal, and so any comedy flick on the subject is by nature exploitative. Which reminds me to write that screenplay on my very real college experience that laid the groundwork for the next 20 years of my life.

The bottom line: this is an incredibly silly movie specific to California college life. It is not particularly awful and has some poignant and well thought out comedic moments. It has, as a major theme, the abuse of social media, which, given the sorry state of American culture these days - with people sharing a meal paying more attention to their cell phones than their company - is a real concern. This B-Grade flick makes the unpopular argument that the pervasiveness of social media is excessive, and that we we need to find a balance.

Great Movie!
gwinn-820-91403917 October 2013
Dean Slater: Resident Adviser was a great surprise. It is easy to assume mediocrity when a movie skips the big screens. Then again, I don't have much experience with these low budget films outside of nature documentaries on netflix. I am not the biggest fan of college themed movies either. Bearing biases, I enjoyed RA for it's creative filming, plot, and easy to watch acting.

The awkward moments of college were brought to life quickly. The movie actually hinges on awkward college life and this is a good thing. Growing up is awkward, and especially amidst your peers. Those that critique this aspect of the film are probably still reconciling their own youthful travails. The young cast had to have felt a tinge of red on their cheeks during the filming.

The highlight of the plot was when the internet was forcefully shut down, effectively halting access to text messages and facebook. The campus wide panic that resulted was beautiful, and a great tribute to the joys of interacting face to face (awkward or smooth), rather than through the hyped mediums of the 21st of the century (that decrease the stakes of an awkward interaction). The scene of great angst and confusion where the students lacked access to their phones was not exaggerated either.

The college students today would react similarly if they found themselves without access to facebook. I have seen my students use it voraciously when given free seconds. The social media snowball is racing downhill to create the next interactive platform into which the young and curious can stare into endlessly. But what about staring deeply into the eyes of your next best friend, or loved one? The writers of RA showed their concern in regards to the direction of everyday interaction on college campuses today. This made the movie for me.

The filming separated the movie from other non big screeners. It was tidy, clean and creative. The introductory scene and credits were excellent. 007 movies always kick off with an action scene and seductive opening credits. RA proved similar with less alterations and more props - which was impressive and had you buckling up rather than taking a bathroom break. Christian, Colin, and Scott are hopefully polishing up the plot of their second movie by now. I'm an eager fan.

Well worth your time.

I did the 3 day rental on Amazon, and watched it over and over again! Loved the cast, the film work, the directing, and of course the kendamas! Colin Sander did an amazing job directing the movie, and I would highly recommend any of his works! I am definitely suggesting watching it and purchasing it too if you watch movies often! It has everything that you'd want in a college comedy film. There are life lessons to be learned from watching this, stories to be shared, and even ways to relate to the movie. Like stated previously in another review, after watching this movie, you indeed may not feel the same afterwards.

Not What I Expected
tjohn7576929 August 2013
I have been a fan of Nathalia Ramos' for a few years now and when I heard her new movie, Dean Slater, was being released I thought I would at least look it up and see what it was. I then found that it was a direct-to-video release and I had my doubts. Regardless I paid the $3.99 on iTunes and rented it. Like my title suggests, it was not what I expected. I half-expected a cheap budget, weak acting, and a horrendous, stupid plot. I was actually surprised to find that I enjoyed the movie. True it is not Citizen Kane by any stretch nor a Mel Brooks or Monty Python comedy. It seems to be a take on the eighties movies that I grew up. The humor is basically sophomoric (of course there's farting and a guy who likes to urinate), but hey I enjoy that style sometimes. The story itself centers around three college freshmen and their replacement RA, the mysterious and banished former SCSU student Dean Slater. Dean is to them, their guru who teaches them to experience college and life in general. Being one who doesn't actually own a cell phone I agreed with most of what they had to say. Yes, the plot actually had something to say. Not always well, but it did have a moral. The acting was for the most part pretty good, and the scenes didn't looked slapped together. The writing was okay, some of it seemed forced, and I will admit some dialogue just seemed stupid to me. Not funny stupid, just not needed. That and it seemed the three writers tried a little too hard to fit in too many things plot-wise in the allotted 83 minutes. Plus there were a few things missing that could have been explained. Overall, though I still found myself enjoying the movie. Something I find not that often with today's movies. If you're looking for something intelligent with a deep message, don't bother. If you're looking for something silly, to entertain you for a short time I would suggest this. Heck, you could do worse.

A funny and accurate look at the mind of the young adult.
beau-skiman30 August 2013
To start off,

this movie was both entertaining and philosophical. The film offers aspects of humor I have never seen used in film. The film makers used many different techniques to amuse and entertain the audience. Each scene was not only quite amusing and often made me laugh out loud, but provided a look into the human mind. A lighthearted moral guide. Many lessons to be learned from this unbelievable film.

I can't say enough about the hysterical humor presented in this movie.

There can only be great things and better films to come in the future from this ultra- talented group of cinematographers. This is a true masterpiece if studied and observed with an open mind. I recommend this film to anyone who wants a brief look into mind of the American adolescent.

Be warned that you may never feel the same after watching this film.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this film. I enjoyed every second.

Amazing film!
lemuelbruhh20 June 2014
The movie "Dean Slater: Resident Adviser" was an attention grabbing film that for sure will bring laughter. The actors in the movie did a very good job of playing their roles and getting into character. The film also included the Japanese skill toy know as the "Kendama," and the film portrayed how the Kendama can be used in different context. I found the film to be very worth watching and hysterical. The story's plot is also very well thought out. It is actually just simply amazing coming from a pro Kendama player. A calm mind is a mind that is able to conjure up genius material as such. I rate this film 10/10 but it honestly breaks the scale. EXPECT TO LAUGH. The film is very much enjoyable, so sit back and enjoy it!

Worth a watch. Check it out.
chomptown18 September 2013
Hearkening back to the 80's college comedy aesthetic this movie tackles the modern dilemma of social media vs. real world interaction. Set at the fictitious Southern California State University the movie follows three freshmen boys who, struggling to overcome their high school identities, find guidance from a long-lost alum standing in as their resident adviser.

On screen you see a lot of pretty young faces and bodies (a couple of the actors are of Disney and Nickelodean pedigree) and a surprisingly diverse assortment of locations from desert to campus to beach to an elaborate data-network center.

Things begin with the usual college antics...partying and partying then paying the price. This all comes with some laughs. A lot of the gags are of the gross out variety and I have to say that despite myself I was laughing out loud at some of the absurd potty humor (particularly a case of drunken toilet bowl mix-up).

There is a love story or two for the hopeless romantics but the emotions seem to take back seat to silliness as the story moves forward towards it's internet defying climax.

The acting is all good enough with the one stand out being Mitchel Jarvis of "Keith Stone" infamy who plays the pseudo-lead Dean Slater. Jarvis brings some real gusto to his scenes with a mix of Gene Wilder Willy Wonka and Johny Depp Jack Sparrow making for a strangely transfixing character.

With their coincidentally freshman effort, Colin Sander (writer, director) and Christian Sander (writer, producer) have made a movie with all the signs of a young and enthusiastic cast and crew having fun and learning as they go along. There are plenty of little things to criticize with the story and structure, but with this kind of movie it's really not worth getting worked up over. Delivering a good dose of laughs and surprises this is worth the rental fee.

P.S. The credit sequence (though perhaps coming in a little late) is fantastic. I hope to see more of that creativity in the next Sander Bro's collaboration.

The epitome of U.S. B movies
jackobob-807-5783452 October 2013
Though I be just an Englishman even I can relate with the wit and humour of a gorgeous US movie such as this. Well where do I start fresh from VGHS Jimmy Wong is delightful albeit he may be the only actor except Nathalie Ramos in this movie I knew of and Nathalie Ramos is again amazing in this movie. Moving from House of Anubis which was dark(ish) albeit cheesy as anybody's business to a full out college humour the transition was seamless. It could of gone with the norm of college/teenagers coming out movies but no it went with a kick ass RA and some lines that though were cliché had a charm to them. It has also managed to add in a kendama and well any movie that introduces and addicts me to a sport like this has to be worth a watch right

Excellent. Love the attention to small details.
everglowrhythm21 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Great B-movie. The unique approach to the underlying message paired with the attention to small details made this movie for me. I was expecting a cliché college movie, but was pleasantly surprised. If you're in the mood to think about how technology is affecting society, I would highly recommend this title.

Pay attention to all the off-screen dialog as well as the random commentary made by extras. Not only does it enhance the experience, it also adds a little more comedic flair to the movie. I found myself getting quite a kick out of all the side conversations.

Funny. Thoughtful. Entertaining.

Classic College Comedy with a real Message
domokai21 June 2014
This movie hits all points of the funny bone, Physical humor, clever background shenanigans and good ol fashioned fart jokes. How this movie was thought out and put together was very precise and quite frankly hilarious. The dialog was very clever and reminds me of the little banter that me and my friends have when we are out and about. Being a California native, the humor of this movie really had me laughing. The movie also has a a great message regarding social media and how it has an ironic impact on these underclassmen. Apart from the classic college comedy scenarios, the real gold is what you hear and see in the background! I watched this movie with headphones on and was laughing with all the crowd remarks, B to C roll audio and the little stories that happen unfold in the background. It also has a kendama in it. How cool is that?!?! I really enjoyed this movie and recommend it for a fun laugh with friends.

See if you can spot the director Colin Sander Cameo! It would make Alfred Hitchcock Proud!

Good movie, would recommend
dezmarmartin20 June 2014
10/10 would watch again. "Dean Slater: Resident Adviser is a great movie written by a great person :P. Probably one of my top 10 favorite comedies. I would most definitely recommend this movie to anyone, even those who do not enjoy comedies, it can be watched on youtube or you can support the makers and buy it from amazon or itunes. Worth it in my opinion. Sanders did a terrific job incorporating "kendama" into the movie. "Kendama" is a Japanese skill toy that is incredibly fun and addicting. Did you know that Colin Sander, director of Dean Slater: Resident Adviser is a pro kendama player for a company called "KendamaUSA"?

Great movie
fluffchop17 March 2022
It's fun and frivolous but has some unique social commentary mixed into it. I enjoyed watching it. I think there's something for most people if they give it a chance. The score of 4.3/10 is BS it's much better than that. I had the chance to finally get a smart phone, get into using it then have it break. I went back to a normal phone while it was exchanged. The thing is when I got another smart phone it was just a phone to me. This is something that should be a part of everyone's experience as it puts things in perspective. This movie is about that sort of thing. Being unplugged. Great movie.

Hilarious and insightful
Corbin-stafford7 September 2013
RA was a great movie! I went into the movie thinking it was going to be just another cheesy college partying movie; however, what I found was quite the opposite. The movie portraits many of society's "flaws" such as being secluded to yourself and your cell phone, and not really connecting with the other people around you. This movie shows many great ways to break from the norm and become better functioning humans not ruled by technology and the movie manages to do this while maintaining a light hearted funny atmosphere. I would recommend this movie to anyone, especially kids that are about to face their first year of college. Killer movie!

It's Absurdly Entertaining
jessviduya20 June 2014
This is a really funny movie! Hilarious! It has a lot of fun jokes, especially if you're into crude humor. I highly recommend it as a pretty good to see for college students! The movie has a good message, which is to not be as involved with technology and constantly look at your phone. Go have the college experience you were meant to have! Sometimes, you just have to put the phone, iPad, whatever it is- down and look at the world around you. Overall, Sanders really put in a lot of work into the film, and with that small of a crew, it amazed me to see how well they pulled it off! Sanders have a lot of potential, and I'm looking forward to see what's next in store for them.

Great movie
coopaloopdude20 June 2014
Amazing, the cast was perfect for portraying the characters personality, and while most college movies are either very cheesy or not particularly funny, this film was neither. Colin Sander and others have made an amazing comedy that i wouldn't mind watching twice! the ability for the actors communicate well and work together to overall make great jokes that had my stomach hurt from laughter. Colin Sander, while an amazing kendama player introduced kendama into another hobby of his very well, which was hilarious to see, as i do play kendama myself. i hope to see many other productions by Colin, and if they are similar to this i know they will make it big.

Warning: Spoilers
Based on knowledge of all the actors and the one and only director Colin Sander I believe this movie is a 10. Colin is a film pro and is known for being a great director and editor. This film shows his talent. I would recommend this movie and all of his movies. The actors are not just hysterical but good at what they do. This is a Summer classics for the ages. Big props to Mr. Sander on this masterpiece. I Love KendamaUsa. Dean is a very creative character who is hilarious and a bit creepy at the same time. I love how the dean incorporates his skill toy In the mix. This movie oddly reminds me of American pie. Jimmy Wong is a well known actor in one of my favorite series on YouTube known as video game high school. I hope this review fills your doubts and makes you buy this wonderfully made movie.
