First announced by Variety ahead of the festival and being launched in the market by HanWay and UTA, “This Blue is Mine” is described as an “original, sexy sci-fi drama,” and marks the English-language debut of Brazilian-born director Iuli Gerbase.
The story is set amidst a family holiday at a tropical resort, where Arthur (Quaid), a guilt-free bon viveur, surprises everyone by bringing his new beautiful and enigmatic girlfriend, Ivy (Debicki). Ivy’s arrival and her odd behavior throws the already delicate dynamics off balance with Arthur and his daughters. Emerald Fennell’s twisted social satire Saltburn casts Rosamund Pike as Elspeth Catton, a wealthy onetime model with Bohemian chic style and a sharp tongue. Since the film’s release, some of Elspeth’s most memorable lines have gone viral in the same way as star Barry Keoghan’s more, ahem, revealing scenes. As it turns out, it’s all had an impact of Pike, a veteran star who has previously generated awards season attention for turns in Gone Girl, A Private War and I Care a Lot, to name a few.
“The way that Saltburn has caught the public’s attention, I felt enticed into leaning into that for how I dress during this little bit of time [during awards season],” Pike told The Hollywood Reporter while walking the red carpet at Saturday’s BAFTA Tea at The Maybourne in Beverly Hills. Since her breakout Oscar-nominated role in David Fincher’s “Gone Girl,” Rosamund Pike has been on the brink of returning to “the club.” She has proven herself to be one of the most consistently compelling actors working today with highly acclaimed lead performances in films such as “A Private War,” “Radioactive,” and “I Care A Lot.” This is along with the versatility of her work in television. Pike stars in the Amazon viewership juggernaut “The Wheel of Time” and, on the other side, won an Emmy for her quiet portrait of one half of a marriage-in-crisis in Stephen Frears’ short-form series, “State of the Union”.
For her film work, Pike currently boasts that Oscar bid for 2014’s “Gone Girl, a Golden Globe nomination for 2018’s “A Private War” and a Globe won on the comedy side for 2020’s “I Care A Lot.” Many believe if the voting for the BAFTA...

Director Matthew Heineman has made a name for himself covering warzones in narrative film (A Private War) and most prominently in documentary. I don’t blame him for stepping back just this once and making a movie about a charming musician and his rise to zeitgeist prominence. The film is American Symphony about Jon Batiste, a soft lob of a tribute that somewhat perversely is the film that could very well win him an Academy Award. Even documentarians can follow the same tried-and-tested path. I just wish I liked it more.
Batiste is 37 years old. American Symphony doesn’t say this stat outright as far as I recall, but it goes to great pains to make the audience very well aware that he is some sort of wunderkind. A Juilliard graduate who landed a big break as bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and...

As Mae West once declared, “When I’m good, I’m very good. But when I’m bad, I’m better.”
That might also be the case when it comes to British actress Rosamund Pike, who just won a Best Actress trophy in the musical or comedy category for the darkly comic “I Care a Lot.” Her win was a bit of a surprise since newcomer Maria Bakalova, who plays Sacha Baron Cohen’s daughter Tutar in the “Borat” sequel, was considered the favorite. But she was no match for Pike’s wicked-smart turn as a stylish hoaxer who legally becomes a guardian for seniors who supposedly can’t take care of themselves and end up seizing their assets for her own gain.
There are echoes of Pike’s performance as a sly and tricky femme fatale Amy in David Fincher’s twisted popcorn thriller “Gone Girl” as a wife...

There are a few documentarians who dabble in feature filmmaking: R.J. Cutler (“If I Stay”), Matt Heineman (“A Private War”), even Werner Herzog (there are many). To their ranks we can now add Oscar-winner Roger Ross Williams (“Music By Prudence”), and he’s all in on making it work.
At Telluride, Williams screened his well-reviewed Sundance feature “Cassandro”; saw the world premiere of “Stamped from the Beginning” at the Toronto International Film Festival; and Apple TV+ will air his four-part docuseries “The Super Models” September 20.
It’s an eclectic and vibrant collection of work and none of it was straightforward or easy. “Cassandro” is based on the true story of Luchador Saúl Armendáriz (Gael García Bernal in a career-best performance) who finds his true identity as the cross-dressing El Exotico on the Mexico wrestling circuit. Williams met his subject on the Amazon documentary short “The Man Without a Mask” (2016).

The remarkable life of war photographer Lee Miller has been a little-known tale of courage and determination, one that deserves the treatment given it by Kate Winslet, who plays the title role at the Toronto Film Festival with nuance and flair.
Miller, a photographer for Vogue in London in the 1940s, fought for the right to go to the front lines of World War II with the Allied troops, determined to bear witness to the realities of war.
But those realities were much harsher than she could have imagined and Miller ended up capturing up-close images of heartrending moments of suffering and survival – including some of the first shocking images of the death camp, Dachau.
Winslet, who also co-produced the film, plays Miller as the American-in-Europe free spirit she was, opening with a nude lunch among painter and artist friends (including Marion Cotillard) in the south of France in the late 1930s.

Hammersmith-born Rosamund Pike, 44, studied English literature at Oxford before her breakthrough role as a Bond girl in Die Another Day. Subsequent film roles include Pride & Prejudice, Made in Dagenham, Jack Reacher and A Private War. “Basil!”
John Cleese is set to revive his classic 1970s comedy Fawlty Towers.
In a shock move that will likely divide fans of the original, Cleese will write and star in the show alongside his daughter Camilla Cleese. Matthew George (Wind River, A Private War), Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner and Derrick Rossi are executive producing the series for Castle Rock Television, which is developing the project.
The new Fawlty Towers is set to explore how Cleese’s cynical, over-the-top and misanthropic Basil Fawlty navigates the modern world. With plot details largely under wraps, the series will explore the relationship between Basil and a daughter he has just discovered he had, as the two tempt fate and team up to run a boutique hotel.
“What I like about Matt is that, unlike many producers, he really ‘gets’ the creative process,” said Cleese, most recently known as a vocal campaigner against “cancel culture.

Gonzalez’s purchase, which closed late last year for a price of 4 million, features a great room with 20-foot ceilings and French doors; a primary bedroom with its own French doors and a walk-in closet; and a primary bath with a steam shower and adjacent exercise room. In the kitchen are custom cabinets, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer and a Dacor double oven. Aviron Pictures founder William Sadleir, an executive producer on projects including Kidnap, A Private War and Serenity, was sentenced Friday to six years in prison for swindling a BlackRock investment fund out of over 30 million.
A federal judge in New York delivered the sentence after Sadleir pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud relating to stealing millions of dollars the fund had invested in Aviron, according to court documents. He was also ordered to pay 31.6 million in restitution.
Sadleir was ousted from the indie film distributor in January 2020 after he and the company were sued by BlackRock for fraud. He was subsequently charged by federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission. In early 2021, while Americans were focused on the transfer of power back home, daredevil director Matthew Heineman assembled a crew and flew to Afghanistan to check in on the status of America’s longest war. At that point, Osama bin Laden had been dead a decade, the Taliban was weakened but not defeated, and the U.S.-trained Afghan Army was holding its own fairly well — and yet, nearly 20 years in, there was still no end in sight for American involvement. That changed almost as soon as Heineman arrived, as the Biden administration made plans to pull out.

Abramorama and Roco Films have co-acquired U.S. distribution rights to Cynthia Lowen’s abortion documentary “Battleground.” The film premiered in the documentary competition category at the Tribeca Festival in June. The doc follows three women in charge of anti-abortion organizations devoted to overturning Roe v. Wade.
Abramorama and Roco Films will co-release “Battleground” in hundreds of theaters across the country beginning Oct. 7 for an official Academy Award qualifying run. The film will also be simultaneously released in schools, non-profit spaces and corporate board rooms, both in-person and virtually. In addition, impact agencies Together Films and Red Owl will deliver a comprehensive national impact campaign alongside the release.
The doc is timely given the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June, effectively striking down the ruling that has guaranteed basic abortion rights in the U.S. since 1973.

The greatest power of the photographic image is its function in affecting social change, a phenomenon that only persists and grows with the proliferation of cameras in every hand at all times. But with great power comes great responsibility, they say, a conundrum explored in Andrew Levitas’ “Minamata,” the story of legendary photojournalist W. Eugene Smith and his experiences photographing the effect of toxic mercury poisoning in Japan.
Writers Levitas, David Kessler, Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman fudge the facts just a bit to craft this biopic of Smith, played here by a grizzled Johnny Depp, and the result is something akin to “Erin Brockovich” by way of “A Private War,” with a dash of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” for flavor. (Depp’s Smith has the same fondness for accessories and methamphetamine that his Hunter S. Thompson did.)

Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series is quite rightly defined as massive. In fact, some have called it unadaptable. The story spans fourteen novels spread over two decades and was ultimately penned by two different authors (Jordan passed away in 2007 and fellow fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson was brought in to finish the series based on his notes.) It was also considered fairly groundbreaking in many ways, from its sprawling cast of major characters to its incorporation of the cyclical nature of creation most often seen in Eastern religions, its focus on balance and duality, and perhaps most importantly, its inclusion of multiple powerful, impactful women.
It’s hard to overemphasize how revolutionary the sheer act of simply including female characters in a fantasy story like this felt when the first book in this series was published in 1990. It’s true, not every woman in The Wheel of Time...

Matthew Heineman is a risk-taker. Having filmed in Mexico with criminal gangs and corrupt police — for the Oscar-nominated 2016 documentary “Cartel Land” — and putting himself in danger in war-torn Syria and Afghanistan (his most recent untitled film chronicles the end of the U.S. war), it was no surprise that the 38-year-old filmmaker would jump into documenting the Covid crisis.
The question is, when will audiences be ready to experience “The First Wave”? The movie finally premieres this week at the Hamptons International Film Festival, after a series of festival rejections that the lauded filmmaker was not expecting. He initially fought to get the film finished in time for Sundance 2021, and while he got praise from the festival, director Tabitha Jackson wasn’t ready to show it.

“The Crown” stars Olivia Colman and Lesley Manville are among a host of British creative industries personalities calling for a levy on gadgets, the proceeds of which would to towards supporting the U.K. creative sector.
“As a coalition of creators and performers we support the Smart Fund, a new scheme that could help to bring cultural and economic renewal to the whole of the U.K. The fund could generate £250-£300 [$346-415] million a year for the creative sector, and boost a wider U.K. economic recovery, by placing a small levy on the sale of devices that enable people to store and download creative content, such as mobile phones, laptops and personal computers. This would provide a direct way for tech companies to invest in culture,” the artists wrote in a letter to U.K. newspaper The Times on Tuesday.
