Reece Young is an emerging artist with a love of anime that he wears on his sleeve. Read our conversation with him below and keep that new single spinning! What is your anime origin story? Reece : It’s actually been a pretty recent addition in my life. But I hit a certain age and had a, I don’t know, I guess a mindset shift and now I’m all about it. It was probably right before and definitely during our long lockdown, I tossed on Naruto . Whether or not you’re a fan of the series, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is undoubtedly one of the most important manga and anime franchises in history, although it never became a mainstream title (and we can think of several reasons why that is). The manga by Hirohiko Araki is still ongoing and has been since 1987, and there are still a lot of adventures and arcs up for adaptation, but the status of the popular anime adaptation is uncertain.
We know that Netflix has taken control over the series’ anime adaptation and that the popular streaming service is currently in charge of the series. And while the objective quality of the adaptation increased, it seems that many fans think that Netflix’s traditional way of releasing series might have killed the hype, i.e., that the future of JoJo’s is quite uncertain.

“We have a Japanese anime studio, which has been producing five or ten anime series per year, over the last few years,” said James Gibbons, Wbd president of Asia-Pacific. “We’ve approved expansion to take that to more than ten series per year.”
The studio has been operational since 2011 and delivered over 80 titles in that span, a mix of high-quality anime, live action series and movies. Anime power-ups are a trope as old as time, bringing excitement to the heat of battle, freshness to the hero (or villain) and their attacks. They also teach young readers and viewers that through training they can grow bigger and stronger — or in the case of Luffy's Gear 5 in "One Piece," they can turn into cartoon chaos gods.
Ever since "Astro Boy" introduced the idea of characters with different levels of power, authors have tried to introduce new and cooler ways to have their characters evolve. Mecha shows like "Mazinger Z" had their giant robots gain upgrades over time. "Sailor Moon" and other magical girl anime added their own spin with the guardians getting boosts to their power while also getting shiny suits. "Digimon" had evolutions that gave characters physical transformations. Of course, there's the seminal anime power-up — the Super Saiyan form from "Dragon Ball Z." Inspired by Bruce Lee,...

"Godzilla Minus One" is one of the best movies of the year. This is a film that takes the King of Monsters back to basics, ignoring the other kaiju in the Tohoverse and instead doing kind of a retelling of the very first "Godzilla." Except it doesn't feel like just a remake, but a return to form. Hideaki Anno gave the franchise new life with his satirical 2016 film "Shin Godzilla," which focused more on the chaotic and often wacky reactions to Godzilla invading modern-day Japan. Now, director, writer, and VFX director Takashi Yamazaki ("Lupin III: The First") takes us back in time and makes Godzilla once again a source of pure terror and a not-at-all-subtle allegory for nuclear armageddon.
Yamazaki reinvents the titular Godzilla in fascinating ways. He adds his own touch to the iconic character's nearly 70-year history by turning Godzilla's atomic breath into a devastating weapon of mass...

"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is not a remake of the 2010 Edgar Wright movie, or just another adaptation of the Bryan Lee O'Malley comic. Instead, this anime takes the same approach as the "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies, taking everything beloved and great about the source material and remixing it into an original tale that comments on, interrogates, and ultimately improves on the original. This is not the story you knew, and it is better for it.
Like the first of the "Evangelion" movies, "You Are (Not) Alone," the show starts out with an almost shot-for-shot recreation of the first volume of the comic, up until Scott's first fight with one of Ramona's evil exes. Except here, Scott loses the fight and all hell breaks loose. From there, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" tells an original story that diverges from the original timeline of the story — and there is a very good reason for it.

Netflix is getting into the "Pokémon" business in a pretty interesting way. The streaming service has debuted the first trailer for a brand new series entitled "Pokémon Concierge" which marks not only the first collaboration between Netflix and The Pokémon Company, but it's also the first stop-motion animated series in the history of the franchise. See what that looks like for yourself in the trailer above.
The trailer is, in a word, adorable. There is absolutely a version of the Pokémon universe that is a little gritty and horrifying. After all, many of these are very dangerous animals. This is the polar opposite of that version, with all of the many familiar creatures just trying to relax and looking rather cuddly. Surprisingly, we've never seen the series take the stop-motion approach before having now seen it, as it looks very natural. The brief logline for the series reads as follows:...

Demand for anime just keeps growing, but tapping into the trend has been challenging even for Netflix. Of mainstream American streamers, only Hulu, which recently introduced a dedicated hub for the Japanese-born animation style, has captured an outsized share of the market.
Data from Parrot Analytics reveals that anime accounted for 5.1% of the total demand for shows in the U.S. in July 2023. This significant interest has ignited intense competition among streaming services vying for Japanese titles. Subscription streamers value anime because of its potential for subscriber retention. And unlike more hit-driven genres, demand for anime is more evenly spread across a broad range of shows.
Besides Crunchyroll, the Sony-backed all-anime streamer, Hulu boasts the highest demand for anime content, at 11.7% of its overall TV catalog demand. Remarkably, Hulu’s library features nine of the 10 most in-demand anime in August, including exclusive titles like “My Hero Academia,” “Attack on Titan,...

Osamu Tezuka is often mentioned along with the title of “Father of Manga” and in many ways, he is, thanks to the prolific nature of his works and the fact that he managed to walk the perfect line between entertainment for kids and profound storytelling that took the medium of manga to an entirely new era. Characters like Astro Boy, Kimba, the White Lion, and Black Jack are still present in the audience’s minds even after so long, and thus the influence of Tezuka cannot be understated. Pluto is a new anime series based on the Astro Boy Universe, and Netflix has released the first official teaser for it.
Pluto is based on a manga of the same name written and illustrated not by Tezuka, who sadly passed away at the age of 60 in 1989, but by Naoki Urasawa, a more contemporary manga artist that has acquired an amazing reputation...

It’s almost the holiday season, which means that millions of travelers will soon find themselves in distant family members’ living rooms while Netflix blares on the TV. What Netflix shows and movies will be featured on those television sets? We now have a better idea as Netflix has released its list of new releases for December 2022.
It’s safe to say that movies are set to dominate this month. There is the usual holiday fare like Scrooge: A Christmas Carol on Dec. 2 but overall Netflix looks to be trying to end the year strong with some big ticket titles. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio arrives on Dec. 9. That will be followed by Rian Johnson’s next Benoit Blanc detective story, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, on Dec. 2. The end of the month closes out with White Noise, Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of the classic Don DeLillo novel, on Dec.

A new trailer for the second season of futuristic fantasy actioner Alice in Borderland was the highlight of a slate of Japanese film, series and cartoons unveiled by Netflix on Sunday as part of its Tudum fan experience.
Japanese content is doing well for the streamer, both within the country which is Netflix’s most valuable in the Asia-Pacific region, and increasingly overseas. Though the country is awaiting its “Squid Game” breakout show, the company has signaled that it is investing more in the Japanese-language category.
The Sunday presentation included a group interview segment in which Yamazaki Kento and Tsuchiya Tao, who play Arisu and Usagi from “Alice in Borderland,” Mori Nana and Deguchi Natsuki who play Kiyo and Sumire in “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House,” and Ai Fairouz , voice actress for Jolyne Cujoh in “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean,” talked about their personal growth and shared...

"Jojo's Bizarre Adventure" has a devoted audience in Japan, but it took years before it found a following in the United States. Conventional wisdom says that it was David Production's anime adaptation of the series that led to its acceptance abroad. I would be even more specific and say that it was the anime's theme songs that were responsible. The first "Jojo" theme, "Sono Chi wa Sadame," roared onto the scene like an unholy chimera of a James Bond song and a classic anime power anthem like "Ai wo Torimodose!!" The second, "Bloody Stream," matched the swagger of its predecessor to a funky beat. While "Sono Chi wa Sadame" melted the faces of Jojo-curious viewers, "Bloody Stream" proved the show's musical stylings weren't a fluke. It helped that the animation accompanying those songs was incredible, courtesy of talented animator Naoki Yoshibe and his crew.

The most popular manga and anime in the United States hail from a Japanese magazine called Shonen Jump. Shonen Jump comics are often, but not always, long-running serial narratives about a young boy who wants to become the best at a hobby or occupation. To achieve this goal he must train long and hard, face off against rivals who inevitably become friends, and take on even greater challenges. Jump is a notoriously competitive magazine, and series that fail to hit it big immediately are either heavily reworked or canceled. Those that succeed run for dozens upon dozens of volumes, in some cases over one hundred. Which raises the question; how do you tell an effective serialized story that takes place over so many pages?
Jump comics utilize cliffhangers and breakneck pacing to keep the reader's interest, while adding and subtracting characters from the main cast based on frequent popularity polls.

In 1987, when manga-ka Hirohiko Araki penned the first chapters of "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure," he was still exploring what would later be known as his signature artistic style. Soon, "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" became Araki's magnum opus, and the long-running series is widely celebrated for its unique use of standard shonen tropes. The influence of Araki's manga series is so great that it inspired a string of manga, anime, and video games, including the "Persona" franchise, which owes a lot to the concept of "Stands" in Araki's series.
Araki sets the events of "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" in 1800s England, wherein Jonathan Joestar, aka JoJo, and his brother Dio Brando are engaged in a feud over the inheritance of familial property. Things take a supernatural turn after Dio becomes a vampire, and JoJo is forced to learn magical techniques to combat his brother. Part three of the manga, which is the most popular in the series,...

Photo: ‘Bastard!!’ The New Anime on the Block (with an Old Soul) Given that Netflix is either incapable of or not invested enough to market the overwhelming majority of its content, new shows don’t so much premiere but plop into the unsuspecting viewer’s lap. This is not always a bad thing. Even with zero buildup, a new anime program on Netflix is unlikely to fly under everyone’s radar, given the service’s long and loving relationship with the medium, along with a pretty solid track record. Enter ‘Bastard!! -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy-’, a fairly notable Netflix “original” anime whose first season premiered just in time for the July 4th weekend. Based on a manga of the same name which premiered in 1988, ‘Bastard!!’ comes from a different era — the same period of anime and manga that gave us ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’, and the shared ancestry is unmistakable; for better or worse,...
