Plot: A spacey pool cleaner (Chris Pine) discovers a plot to steal water from Los Angeles during a drought.
Review: (Note – Poolman Was Reviewed At TIFF 2023) In the fourteen years I’ve been covering TIFF, I’ve seen only a handful of movies that I’d say were shockingly bad. The Mickey Rourke/ Megan Fox/ Bill Murray dud Passion Play comes to mind. Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. That it was made at all is a testament to the power of celebrity, as it has already become notorious at the festival for the amount of walkouts taking place at the screenings.
So why is Poolman so awful? It comes down to the screenplay and Pine’s grating lead performance as a kind of...

Ozzy Osbourne is known to many as the Prince of Darkness, but now he’s got a new nickname: “The Betty White of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” That comes courtesy of Peter Frampton, a fellow inductee in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.
Frampton was asked by Rolling Stone about Ozzy getting in the Rock Hall for the second time (he was also inducted as a member of Black Sabbath in 2006), and the guitar hero responded, “The man is the Betty White of rock & roll.”
We’re not sure Ozzy will be using that as a tagline anytime soon, but Frampton was surely relating the metal icon’s long-lasting career and lovable persona to that of the beloved late Golden Girls actress. As far as potentially jamming with Ozzy on a rendition of “Crazy Train” at the Rock Hall induction ceremony this October, Frampton enthused, “That would be fantastic.

Leslie Fhima was the runner-up on The Golden Bachelor, and Gerry Turner broke her heart when he chose Theresa Nist, so now, that they are getting divorced, plenty of people claim that she dodged a bullet. In reply to those comments, Leslie broke her silence on social media.
Leslie Fhima Joins Other Commenters On The Divorce
Fans were angry with Gerry Turner because he told both of his women that they were the one for him. Poor Leslie was humiliated and distressed when he dumped her. Her family also felt angry, and many ABC fans supported her through those dark days. And yet, she attended the wedding. Despite all the pain, it seems that they became good friends.

Joining the writers room during the fifth season of Gilmore Girls required sitting down with a pen and paper to take notes on all the previous storylines and “lots of coffee,” or so writer Stan Zimmerman reflects in The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore.
In his memoir, to be published by Indigo River Publishing on Feb. 13, Zimmerman chronicles his time working on the series, as well as his journey to finding success as a writer, producer, director and playwright, working on such shows as The Golden Girls and Roseanne. Featuring journal entries throughout, The Girls also details Zimmerman’s relationships with varied stars, including Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bernhard, Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel and the Golden Girls cast.
After coming on to write during season five of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Gilmore Girls, Zimmerman recalls the casting search for the Logan Huntzberger character, Rory’s love interest at Yale, who would go...

"Mary Poppins" has been a beloved children's film since its release in 1964. The musical comedy was a veritable hit among British and American audiences alike and launched the career of the incomparable Julie Andrews, who became one of the brightest stars of the late 20th century.
The Disney classic swept the 1965 Oscars, earning Andrews an Academy Award for her performance and snagging additional awards for visual effects, editing, and music. The film was a great triumph for the studio as well as the stars. It was immediately recognized as the masterpiece that it is and has only retained and strengthened its legendary status with age.
Sadly, as the picture ages, so too do the actors that made it such an unforgettable romp. Very few members of the main cast are still alive today and the ones that haven't made it might surprise you. Glynis Johns, who played suffragette and mother...

TV giant Norman Lear, who died Dec. 5 at 101, leaves behind arguably the single most valuable body of work ever committed to the medium. On seminal series like All in the Family, Maude and The Jeffersons, Lear dared to tackle issues then considered unthinkable sitcom fodder — rape, abortion, homosexuality, racism, alcoholism — with a genius’ eye and ear for capturing their moral complexities while poking at the foibles of the American working class. These six episodes, however, stand out among the rest for having actively moved the needle on public opinion — and in doing so elevated Lear’s work from mere entertainment to timeless agitprop art.
1. All in the Family — Season 8 — “Cousin Liz” — Original Air Date: Oct. 9, 1977
Lear’s magnum opus, All in the Family, tackled the most hot-button issues throughout its nine seasons, from rape to racism to the war in Vietnam. But one particularly resounding episode was “Cousin Liz,” in...

The '80s were a different time; shoulder pads were in, Reaganomics was taking over the country, and in 1984, a hyper-stylish show called "Miami Vice" was about to become all the rage. Before the Florida-set cop series ever premiered on NBC, though, it had already inspired another series, one that seemed to have very little in common with the Michael Mann-produced action show.
That series was "The Golden Girls," the popular and gut-bustingly funny sitcom about women of a certain age that has only become more beloved in the decades since it ended. "The Golden Girls" is remembered for its positive and honest conversations about aging and its characters' penchant for savage, hilarious quips. It also bolstered the fame of its already-famous stars, Bea Arthur ("Maude"), Betty White ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show"), Rue McClanahan (also "Maude"), and Estelle Getty ("Mask"). The pool dude abides.
Somewhere early on in the creative process, Chris Pine and his writing-producing partner Ian Gotler clearly thought they were on to something inspired with Poolman, which seemingly set out to reimagine Chinatown as a Coen brothers movie, with Pine playing the title character — a long-haired, scraggly bearded Zen master of a pool cleaner turned bumbling sleuth. But the end result, also serving as Pine’s directorial debut, goes tonally off the rails from the start and proceeds to hit bottom with excruciating momentum, dragging a game ensemble, including Annette Bening, Danny DeVito and Jennifer Jason Leigh, down for the count.
Given its world premiere at Toronto, where it arrived looking for distribution, this TIFF stiff will likely have a tough time finding a home based on the tepid response from the customarily effusive festival audience.

“Neon Genesis Evangelion” is one of the most celebrated and adored anime series of all time. When the series arrived, after years of only being available on what can charitably be described as the gray market, on Netflix in 2019, Vulture described the show as “equivalent in acclaim, auteurship, and cultural footprint to America’s ‘Twin Peaks’ or ‘2001: A Space Odyssey.’” And they are right. The show, the brainchild of mastermind Hideaki Anno, is a colossal, complicated achievement – a joyful celebration of giant robot media and a barbed deconstruction of the same media.
It is also a somewhat daunting proposition from the outside, with the entire “Neon Genesis Evangelion” franchise spread across the initial 26 episodes of the original show, plus several movies and an entire film franchise that essentially remade the series in a much weirder, more visually sophisticated way that is very much its own thing.

Bob Barker might be remembered as the man who saw many of us through the days we were home sick from school, but for Betty White, he was one giant pain for a period between 2009 and 2010. A feud between the pair erupted in 2009 when they had a massive disagreement about an elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo.
The two were fighting over the fate of Billy, an elephant who still lives at the L.A. Zoo to this day. In 2009, there was hope that Billy could be transported to a sanctuary — something that Barker supported. But White, a staunch ally of zoos, was opposed.
Things got so tense between the pair that Barker threatened to boycott the year’s Game Show Awards if White attended, despite the fact that he was slated to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the organization that year.

A new iteration of the Full House series was a brewing possibility when actor Bob Saget suddenly died in 2022. Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie Tanner, said despite the loss, the cast could reunite someday in some capacity.
“I don’t know that we’re done with the Full / Fuller legacy,” Sweetin said on the Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef podcast.
“But I do think it’s going to have to be some time from now after Bob,” she said. “I think that would be a big loss. I think, obviously it’s something that would, could be dealt with at some point.”
“But I do think that definitely is a big hole in all of our hearts right now, so we’ll see,” she added. “We always joke that we’re up for a Golden Girls-type version of Kimmy and Steph and DJ living somewhere in Miami wearing Mumus on the Lanai.

First-time Emmy award nominee Phil Dunster is celebrating the milestone in London, the city where he brought to life the character of Jamie Tartt across three seasons of the hit Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. A role that changed the British actor’s life forever — and that of TV history.
Dunster’s nomination for Season 3 puts Ted Lasso among the rare ranks of television shows to have all members of their original series regular cast nominated for an Emmy. The other shows include Golden Girls, Schitt’s Creek, Will and Grace and All in the Family. Ted Lasso earned a total of 21 Emmy nominations on Wednesday.
“I think Jamie experienced this sort of slow growth and he’s this interesting benchmark for Ted,” Dunster tells Deadline about what attracted him to the role. “I think one of the reasons that I think and hope people connected with Jamie was because we...

When Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels thinks of those who inspired him, Patrik-Ian Polk easily comes to mind.
Known for telling groundbreaking stories centered on Black gay life — including the independent film Punks, which premiered at Sundance in 2000, and Noah’s Arc, which ran on Logo TV for two seasons from 2005-06 — Polk is a creative force who has chronicled (and continues to chronicle) the lives of underrepresented people while championing diversity way before “Dei” became a buzz term.
“[Polk] was way ahead of the curve, and he took the bullets for all of us when it just wasn’t accepted to do what he was doing,” Daniels, 63, says of Polk, 49. “His bravery is what I ran with in my career. I learned from Patrik that I wasn’t going to take no for an answer. When I say he really has inspired me — he’s a mentor.”

Debra Messing revealed during “The Magic of Will & Grace” panel at The Paley Center for Media that she was instructed to “have big boobs” during her first costume fitting for the NBC sitcom (via People magazine). The Emmy winner pushed back on the suggestion, only to be told that it was coming straight from the top network executive.

It took months, but Night Court Season 1 Episode 12 finally switched on a plot device light bulb for me.
Abby's Upstate stories are an updated version of Rose Nylund's St. Olaf tales on Golden Girls. Or Sophia's Sicilian parables. If a show's going to borrow sitcom elements, the Og Gg is one of the best to lean into. (It doesn't hurt that it's also an NBC IP.)
Like Rose and Sophia, Abby's more canny than she lets on, and when she decides to rewrite the rules of engagement, old-school sharks like DeWitt show their toothless tactics are relics of a sad and shameful time.
That's not to say young sharks aren't eager to circle the waters.
Up until the final scenes, Olivia's rabid for a taste of the upper echelon of legal hobnobbing.
She ruthlessly cashes in on Abby's interest in spending some off-hours time with her to get into the club,...

Well, that was an incredibly dark return to the season.
They didn't leave us with a glimmer of light during Station 19 Season 6 Episode 7 unless you are a fan of Ross and Sullivan's romance or the prospect of Jack returning to the station and building a relationship with his biological sister brings you joy.
But the Maya and Marina situations aren't getting better anytime soon, and the series' coverage of police brutality against Black men again was gratuitous and triggering.
It was an ambitious hour, yet it didn't gain momentum until midway through. It was also one of those tonally off types of installments.
For some reason, we had Maya's descent and Marina's current dissolution, Dixon's blackmail, hilarious Golden Girls-esque senior women on a scavenger hunt, and an emotionally damaging Crisis One call vying for our attention within the same hour.
At least two of those storylines were so...

The crime noir genre gets a distinctly South African twist in the new series “Donkerbos,” which premiered its first episodes this week as part of the Berlinale Series Market Selects lineup at the European Film Market.
The show begins when the bodies of six children are found in the forests of a provincial backwater town, and a local detective (Erica Wessels) is called in to investigate the shocking crimes. But as the series unfolds, she’s forced to wrestle with her dark past, her family and a distrustful community to catch the killer before another child is taken.
Written and directed by Nico Scheepers, “Donkerbos” is produced by Nagvlug Films and sold globally by MultiChoice, which bowed the show last year on its SVOD platform Showmax.

Jordan Peele’s 2017 movie Get Out became an instant classic thanks to its incredible characters, compelling mix of comedy and horror, and pinpoint skewering of America’s racial dynamics. The film abounds with memorable moments, including when the patriarch of his villainous family, Roman Armitage (played by Richard Herd), reveals the disturbing twist to a kidnapped Chris (Daniel Kaluuya).
Herd isn’t in Get Out for long, but he has a crucial role in landing Peele’s central metaphor about racism. The director used an idiosyncratic piece of advice to help the actor find the right tone for the scene.
‘Get Out’ is one of the best movies of the century
When the trailers for Get Out first dropped, it was easy to be skeptical of the concept. In 2017, Jordan Peele was half of a beloved comedy duo with Keegan-Michael Key, but no one knew about his ambitions as a solo filmmaker.

Nick Taylor: Well girl, it finally happened: Drag Race did a Golden Girls themed challenge! The Girl Group challenge - an infrequently repeated challenge that’s more of a fixture on All-Stars and the international spin-offs than the main stage - is the Golden Girls Group this year. It’s also the first challenge of season 15 where I find myself out of step with the judge’s decision-making on several fronts, even if I see why they made their choices. What do you think of the girl group challenge historically, and how does that stack up with today’s episode?
CLÁUDIO Alves: I really love the girl group episodes, especially on international seasons. If you asked me to replace a mainstay maxi challenge, I’d probably erase the obligatory makeover/family resemblance nonsense with this musical trial. However, I can’t quite say “Old Friends Gold” ranks high amid its girl group sisters.

Exclusive: Tony Danza has been set for a guest spot on the Fox sitcom Outmatched, whetting the appetite for an imminent return to starring in a sitcom, his first in a long time. Danza was just set for this and will be at the table reading Monday morning as he separately decides between several offers for his own sitcom vehicle.
Best known for starring in Taxi and Who’s the Boss and last seen in the Netflix series The Good Cop, Danza has gotten close to doing a few sitcoms in recent years. One was a father-son show at NBC built around him and stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, and another was a male Golden Girls-type sitcom with Danza and John Goodman at ABC.
Jason Biggs leads the cast of Outmatched, and Danza will play his retired bulldozer of a father, up from Florida for a visit. Biggs stars with Maggie Lawson,...

It took years of hustle and hard work in high heels before RuPaul hit it big in TV. But while he was on the road to becoming a household name and multiple Emmy winner, the host and executive producer of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” never doubted that he was destined for small-screen success.
“Everything I know I learned from television,” RuPaul says. “I grew up watching television. I was groomed for it before I ever stepped in front of a camera. The first time I did, I knew exactly what to do.”
RuPaul recalls being obsessed with TV as a kid growing up in San Diego and the Atlanta area, frequently watching “Perry Mason” and “Murder, She Wrote” with his mother. He never missed “The Carol Burnett Show” and variety series hosted by Sonny & Cher. “Good Times” and “Sanford & Son” were also favorites. He watches reruns of “Golden Girls” regularly to this day.

Who's ready to go back to Wisteria Lane? When Desperate Housewives debuted on ABC 15 years ago on October 3, 2004, the dramedy from former Golden Girls scribe Marc Cherry, along with Lost and Grey's Anatomy, would go on to reverse the struggling network's fortunes and introduce the world to an iconic setting with more murder and intrigue than any other street in America. For eight increasingly ludicrous seasons, that nondescript suburban cul-de-sac was the epicenter for some of the juiciest moments on broadcast television. But as it turned out, the real drama worth talking about was happening when cameras weren't rolling and egos were clashing. As we were reminded recently when Cherry and leading...

The Golden Girls might be coming back to our TV screens soon - this time with a distinct 2019 edge. Over the weekend, at the Creative Arts Emmys, Jane Lynch teased that she and Cyndi Lauper have teamed up to star in a TV comedy show that will be like a "Golden Girls for today." It'll reportedly be available to stream on Netflix. In our opinions, a modern take on Dorothy's sassy one-liners is exactly what we need in our lives right now, so we fully support this message. According to Variety, who did some serious Facebook sleuthing, Carol Leifer (a former Seinfeld writer) took to the social media platform back in July to express how excited she was about a comedy show she'd been working on with the pair. "It's official, heading out next with a new half-hour comedy, starring Jane Lynch and Cyndi Lauper," she wrote. "A writer's dream...

Jane Lynch and Cyndi Lauper just wanna have fun. The comedian and the 1980s music icon have joined forces to star in a new comedy project that may be heading to Netflix.
Lynch let it slip backstage at the Creative Arts Emmys that she and Lauper will co-star in a comedy that she described as “kind of a ‘Golden Girls’ for today.”
A quick Internet search revealed that writer and comedian Carol Leifer (“Seinfeld”) is behind the show as well. “It’s official, heading out next with a new half-hour comedy, starring Jane Lynch and Cyndi Lauper,” Leifer wrote on Facebook in July. “A writer’s dream to work with these two legends. Jane Lynch spilled the beans about a brand-new show with singer Cyndi Lauper that she just sold to Netflix.
“I pitched a show to Netflix and they bought it, so that’s nice. I don’t know if I can talk about it, but I’ll tell you it’s with Cyndi Lauper, so there,” Lynch said backstage in the press room at the 2019 Creative Arts Emmys Sunday. “We’ll see. It’s just a day at a time for me. I enjoy the moment.”
When pressed for more details, Lynch hesitatingly relented: “I wonder if I should. I don’t think I can,” she said, adding, “I know, I did. We’re our age, which you know, I’m almost 60 and [Lauper is] 65, and we’re looking for our next act without having husbands or children. And there will be two other folks in it who haven’t been cast yet.

Emmy-winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race” host and media superstar RuPaul is a trove of pop culture knowledge. “Everything I know I learned from TV,” he recently told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “I love TV so much.”
RuPaul’s current TV diet is a mix of new shows like the second season of “Big Little Lies,” and classics like “Mission Impossible.” But when asked to choose a favorite TV episode of all time, RuPaul immediately gravitated to one from “The Golden Girls.”
“The writing on ‘The Golden Girls’ is so brilliant,” he said. Added his longtime friend and “Drag Race” partner Michelle Visage: “The jokes still hold up. ‘The Golden Girls,’ even though some of the stuff would be considered off color today, it still makes you laugh every single time, just like ‘All in the Family.'”

With his new CBS All Access show “Why Women Kill,” Marc Cherry maintains the titillating drama of his previous efforts while pushing into more “mature” territory — a move he owes to the streaming platform.
“Working on a network show where they want 23 episodes a season — it’s a really tough factory gig,” Cherry told Variety, having previously created ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” and Lifetime’s “Devious Maids.” “We turned out 10 episodes of ‘Why Women Kill.’ I had so much more time and so much more money to be able to shift and shape these episodes in amazing ways. I love being in the streaming world. I could do more mature themes. I could throw in a four letter word and tasteful nudity.”

For 18 years, Chris Kattan has harbored a secret that he’s finally ready to share: The comedian believes he broke his neck while performing a sketch on “Saturday Night Live” in 2001, an accident that he says nearly paralyzed him, led to years of addiction struggles and sidetracked his career.
In his new memoir, “Baby Don’t Hurt Me: Stories and Scars from Saturday Night Live,” provided exclusively to Variety before its May 7 publication, Kattan reveals the specifics of his injury, which he is claiming took place during the show’s May 12, 2001, episode. In one sketch, he writes that he fell back in a rickety chair — landing hard on the stage, painfully hitting his head.
Kattan first shared news of an old injury while appearing on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2017, in order to explain why he was so stiff while moving around on stage. But he never alleged that it happened on “SNL” — until now.

Listen: ‘Broad City’ Stars Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer on How ‘The Golden Girls’ Changed Their Lives
Thank you for being a friend: The entire 180-episode run of “The Golden Girls” is currently available to binge on Hulu, and “Broad City” stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have been diving in.
“I’ve been watching from the pilot,” Glazer told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “It’s the best. I am finding myself f—ing LOLing. I am truly slapping my knee. It’s unbelievable. Every joke is so well-written, so well-constructed.”
“The Golden Girls” ran between 1985 and 1992, and starred Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty as four women living together in a Miami house. For Jacobson and Glazer, it was comedy school — a show with big laughs, well-defined characters, and interesting relationships.
“I watched it as a kid and it was always my go-to,” Jacobson said. “I don’t think I even realized how much of an influence it was.”
