King 2 Hearts started strong but lost momentum...
fprefect-685-28108412 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Kings 2 Hearts (2012), a 20 episode kdrama hooked me in the first 8-10 episodes with the romance between the North Korean Special Forces Officer Kim Hang Ah and the South Korean Prince Lee Jae Ha. The royal family were decent caring people who had to cope with tragedy after tragedy. In second half of the series the villain became the driver of the story line. Bottom line for me, I want good to triumph over evil. At the end of King 2 Hearts, I felt that evil had the upper hand the entire series. There were never had any significant consequences for horrible actions. In addition, the second couple of the series, the plucky Princess and reserved Royal Guard were pointlessly destroyed, without a valid story line payoff.

What I liked about King 2 Hearts:

1. Our Heroine, Kim Hang Ah, was tough and tender. She loved her man, she literally saved her man (multiple times), and she demanded his growth into a better person. One of the strongest kdrama female characters I've ever seen.

2. Our Prince (then King), Lee Jae Ha, grew into a fine man after initially being lazy, petty, and at times mean. This jerk to hero evolution seems to be a specialty for the actor Lee Seung Ki. I loved his portrayal of similar evolving characters in Shining Inheritance and My Girlfriend is a Gumiho.

3. Our stalwart Royal Guard protector, Eun Shi Kyung, was deftly played by Jo Jung Suk. This character could have been wooden and boring, but instead was a rock for our Prince/King (terrific bromanace between these two). His romance with the princess was slow but lovely to watch. The death of this character was unnecessary. When a character dies by a villain as the villain is being caught, I find it senseless and an emotional gut-punch that has no story line validity. I felt the same when the writers of City Hunter killed the prosecutor in the next to last episode. This was unnecessary and harsh and left other characters and the viewers shell shocked in the final episode.

4. Our plucky princess, Lee Jae Shin, played by Lee Yoon Ji started bold but was traumatized and paralyzed by the evil villain. The unlocking of her memory had an emotional payoff when you found what the villain forced her do. The actress Lee Yoon Ji created a character that you rooted for. The same actress was great in Dream High.

5. Our initial King, Lee Jae Kang, was loving, wise, fun, the best brother and king. The actor Lee Sung Min made a big impact in the initial third of this series.

6. Our Queen mother, Bang Yang Sun, was tolerate and stronger than you initially thought. She loved her family, and showed true pluck when face-to-face with the villain.

What I didn't like:

1. The villain John Mayer was initially weird, creepy, and strangely compelling in the initial episodes. But when the writers let this evil character drive the last two-thirds of the series, our good characters only played catch-up and never really triumphed. I so wanted our heroine to use her sniper rifle on the villain instead of his evil side-kick. His penalty was to be thrown in prison where I imagined he could still run his evil empire remotely. I was not satisfied this character paid for his crimes.

2. The royal adviser Bang Yang Sun so easily betrayed the royal family after taking a bribe and then lied, manipulated and became the inside man for the villain. This was difficult to watch and swallow.

3. The foreign actors could not act. In an attempt to make the story line conflict global, many foreign actors were employed. Unfortunately, they were all bad actors with weird accents. The foreign actors were outmatched by the core actors and were distracting to the story.

King 2 Hearts had many pluses: good actors, solid romances, characters you liked or hated, twists and turns, but the writing in the latter part of the series bothered me and downgraded my feelings of the series to "missed it by that much" (good but not great).

One Of The Best Korean Drama
lia000277 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I like how the story going it's unpredictable yet happy ending. The age gap between Ha ji won and Lee seung gi is unnoticed since ha ji won looked young and acting really well here compare to "secret garden". The transition of childish guy became a completely grown up and responsible man is shown really well by Lee seung gi, I almost cried when the former king died. The acting of all the actors are so well, and the plot is good. I don't really care about this drama rating in South Korea.

Overall I think this is a really good drama, even though there was a lacking of music background there. Even then ending is good, it shown the prologue of the royal married couple which seldom in many Korean dramas, they usually make a very simple ending which left me unsatisfied.

Really good KD not quite as silly as the norm, the male actor was very good and i usually could care less about them.enough with the horrible caucasian actors though are you that afraid of our acting that you get these stiffs. All in all worth watching one of the best.

VioletSakura's review of King2Hearts
VioletSakurachan20 October 2012
I AM KING...

I actually can't believe I am now writing a review for the whole drama, this whole time this drama has seemed so real and so close to me, that 'closing the book' is like saying goodbye to a whole world full of very close friends.

The plot of this drama has so many dimensions, which are continuous and meaningful, that I can write separate reviews for every one of them: JaeHa and HangAh's romance, North and South, JaeShin and ShiKyung, BongGu and the power, JaeHa becoming the King, the theory of ShiKyung (the research question being, whether such a person can exist in the world, maybe I should write a thesis on this)...^^ While I definitely view this drama as a romance, I think the main scene here is grabbed by JaeHa's becoming the King we see him in the last episode, from his very first steps as a worthless player (whoever thought of him that way...tsk-tsk-tsk) to a magnificently shining, war stopping King of South and North Koreas. The drama provides such a rich character development plot it kept me breathless most of the time... The changes through which JaeHa went through with the help of JaeKang, then HangAh, then ShiKyung... aren't they brilliantly thought of? In my opinion the love story described in this drama is the most beautiful and breath-taking love story...ever, even being not the center story of the drama, the love line didn't fail in JaeHa's every next step, in every HangAh's heroic act... being together or separated, they were perfect and strong...they both took my breath away, and I am hopelessly in love with this couple!

I don't think I possess the right words to describe the acting in this drama, now typing... it seems shallow. Every character in the drama became a part of me during this weeks, every one of them (except for the foreign 'actors' who just...whatever) made my heart skip a beat, hit the air with fists, jump up and down.

Ha JiWon is one of my favourite actresses, and I was sure in her when I started watching this, she did not disappoint me for a second! Her HangAh had so many layers, so deep, so lovable, so heroic, so strong, she is definitely one of my favourite female characters. Lee SeungGi... brilliant as a brat, brilliant as a King, brilliant as a lover who want to protect his loved one (suddenly I am seeing the part when he was holding HangAh in China, like she was the last piece of air in his lungs...). I think he has improved very much in his acting, and JaeHa was perfect, he become the King people will believe in, he brought the drama to the(almost) perfect ending... Jo JungSuk... I think ShiKyung was the most difficult character to portray in the drama. As he was always being called 'boring and not having sense of humor', depending on the actor I think, ShiKyung could definitely be a boring one, maybe an honest and loyal, yes, but not the ShiKyung everybody fell in love with. Jo JungSuk made him perfect. This character will remain in my heart forever, he is one of the main reasons JaeHa made it to the end and the way he made it to the end! I can't help but mention Yoon JeMoon as Kim BongGu, as he never failed to freak and creep me out with his character. BRAVO!

The cinematography and the music of the drama deserve the BEST award of all awards. The symbolic value of the scenes played out by the light and shadows and the gorgeous music pieces never failed to put me deep into the world of the drama, I never doubted the reality of the event, I think I never will...

Long live the King and the Queen!

To you, this may just be a game.

In a South Korea with a monarchy the spoilt prince becomes enamoured with a North Korean special forces soldier. An interesting mix of romance and politics over the 20 episodes with lots of murder and intrigue. A megalomaniac boss of a large conglomerate will stop at nothing to destroy the royal family and because of his wealth he influences countries making him difficult to oppose. It stars the adorable Ha Ji-won although in this series she does have an annoying intonation to her voice, the rest of the cast give a Stirling performance although this does not apply to the stilted actors playing foreigners.

Excellent Drama!! Lee Seung Gi Rocks!!
giteckm21 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Drama has excellent plot. Great work done by lead actor Lee Seung Gi(Lee Jae Ha).The transition from a Brat to a responsible King and a caring lover was very well portrayed by him. He was charismatic throughout. I have become a great fan of his. Though he is much younger and less experienced than actress Ha Ji Won(Kim Hang Ah),he has equaled her in acting department.Actress Ha Ji Won is great as always. The second leads also played their part well.Thankfully there are no love triangles or quadrangles here. The drama also showcased the life of Kings and the political turmoil/threat they face every day.Only one thing that didn't go well with me,they shouldn't have killed second male lead at the end. It was sad.

Good parts but some tedious stretches
phd_travel21 September 2021
This 2012 series is better than King Eternal Monarch but that isn't saying that much. Fans of CLOY may want to check this one out because there is a North South thing. It's cruder since it's from 2012 but you can find some humour about the differences. Politics is one of the main themes with digs at foreign powers. It can get tedious at times. The start is the better part of the series with some exciting parts and good action here and there. Quite a stellar cast with Oscar winning actress YYJ playing the queen mom. The leads Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji Won have chemistry because they both have more tanned complexions and South East Asian features. HJW is believable in her action scenes. Interesting secondary romance between the soldier and the princess. The villain is comical as his is bunch of international bad people.

The fault is the drag during the WOC games and the kidnapping and politics. This show should have been the standard 16 episodes. Then the boring parts could have been edited out. There is more English and other languages spoken to give it an international political drama feel.

Creative plot, north south interaction interesting
madbird-6124327 December 2018
North Korea is a mysterious place to me. This drama unveils the life of north korean to me. The plot is creative to let birth to a king in south korea. The story is rich with mutiple storylines. Besides romance there are politics, thrillers, action. Female lead is my favourite action actress. The character of male lead is also menly. I like very much his reaction when knowing that his wife has miscarriage. So brave and musculine. His transition from a playboy to a decisive king is so natural and encouraging.

A cute and young female lead prompts me to see the drama again and again.

This show had me at "Princess Pooh".
Jessattard3126 March 2019
The badass woman protagonist stays fierce and strong even while exploring her vulnerable side to love and relationships. Her military and physical strength don't just disappear, and she is the one who saves him from physical dangers (a nice reversal of the damsel/ Princess in distress).

As many have noted the antagonist can be weird and over-the-top and the foreign actors can. not. act.

But, the Korean characters genuinely develop throughout the series and the tragedies had me crying. The love between romance characters and new family members feel genuine because of their growth.

Seung-gi the true king of Korea
markapiec18 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I first saw Lee Seung-gi in Vagabond, that is why i also watched the king, and i was pleasantly surprised how good his acting was then (2012). He is an excellent actor, his facial and verbal expressions are absolutely spot on. He has however very overpowering personality and requires a very strong female lead or supporting act, neither of which was present in the king.. it could have worked though, the character of Kim Hang-ah started very well as a strong, confident and very competent military officer, but i felt like her script was written by 2 people with 2 different ideas of how she should develop throughout the episodes. Her confidence dissapeared as soon as they put her in south korean attire. As a trained special agent, she failed to recognise manipulation, not to mention hee poor handling of stressful situations.. i was disappointed, as a woman i expected a strong female lead that takes no s**t from anyone. She raised a little when she went on a mission to save him from the hostage situation, but again, fighting in a pencil skirt made the whole scene more humorous rather than dramatic. Nevertheless, she still did great with what she was given. As to the rest, mixing it with bad english actors didnt quite work for me. But that seems to be the trend in kdramas, on one side we have A-listed korean actors and on the other, very poor english/foreign actors. Overall, a very nice romcom, if you are Seung-gi's fan (or Jo Jung-sun's on that matter), it is so worth watching. I just hope that next time when casting Seung-gi, the directors will carefully select his counterpart (Bae Suzy was excellent in Vagabond), otherwise they will do a great injustice to the other actors & actresses by completely overshadowing them.

Very good drama
AngelofMusic199827 July 2020
This drama is set in an alternate reality, where South Korea is a monarchy and North Korea is still comunist, but without cult of personality in a leader. The relationship between South Korea and North Korea is better than in real life.It tells the story of love between Lee Jae Ha ,a South Korean prince, later king (played by Lee Seung Gi)and Kim Hang Ah,a North Korean special agent(played by Ha Ji Won). They have great chemistry and Ha Ji Won does some physical work in it and has a North Korean accent. The story is very exciting ,with a terrifying villain.Overall,a very good drama.

Very Suspenseful, Action Packed, Romance in The only divided nation left in the world
KdramaInStudio22 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This show should be written into a book. It could be written as thoroughly detailed as a Tom Clancy novel and historically portrayed as a Linda Fairstein novel about New York attributes. I watched this because after Crash Landing On You, I wanted to understand more about the differences between the North and South Korea and this show has a military setting plus romance. Asides from the first few episodes when your learning what's going on and whose who, the remaining 15 episodes are extremely stressful. Twists and turns In the plot drive one to question the whats and whys of how different cultures deal with one another and a realization politics can do a lot of damage and kill a lot of people. Funny part? How the Americans are portrayed at the W.O.C. games. How they have them speaking in General American and how the writers nailed it with the attitude. John Mayer, a student who attended the same school as the royal family in elementary school is a bad guy businessman who is ultimate evil. What he can control with the use of money and companies is downright crazy. He doesn't have to be Arnold Swartzenager in The Terminator 1 to be scary just real enough. Finally, The King successor becomes a manly character of respect along side his North Korean bride and soldier who encourages him to be his best and serve his people. Better plot than any Hollywood movie these days. .

I'm not giving it a 10 stars, I'm giving it a 10++++++++++
natassa-athens17 August 2020
What an exceptional drama and an ingenious screenplay!

What a scream against war!

What a crying loud voice for peace and love!

It's one of the best kdrama I've seen, and I've seen a lot so far!

Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji Won were so excellent, so great, each one of them performing in two types of attitude! Such a superb acting from both of them!

Lee Seung Gi, you are the King of our Hearts! I love you!

It's a series that takes your breath away. You won't have a chance to get bored, not for a single moment. You might watch the whole series in one shot!

Due to its message, supported by great acting, I consider this series as one of the most precious gems of kdrama.

Don't miss it! :)

it's okay.
chilligrrl5 June 2020
I'm a bit of a Lee Seung-gi fangirl so was looking forward to this but I'm finding it a bit hard to swallow with the tough as nails army girl going all gooey eyed saccharine all the time in a very Hello Katty way. The plotline is good, the story is interesting, the acting.... half is good (korean) the other half (non-koreans) not so good. The story is a bit implausible and IRL it just wouldn't happen without major ramifications, but this is a kdrama and it's just how it is in fiction. It gets better as it goes along, so just keep watching, even if it is exhausting.

I picked certain extras were Australian/New Zealandish before they even opened their mouths due to the wooden/cardboard nature Australian & kiwi actors generally have (it's like they overthink it and worry too much about what people think).

Not so good.
mlaralot7 January 2021
The first episodes of this drama are ok if you ignore the occasional nonsense. Then, half way through it, you have to put up with old fashioned script tricks to keep on watching... (It's a bad omen when you think about all the episodes still remaining ) The last part of the drama, you just keep the fast forward key pressed most of the time to avoid the embarrassment. In the end, I can only think: thank God Korea is a republic. That said, except for the "pseudo americans" and the female lead, the acting is pretty amazing.

Not Good - Not watchable
ronelioramos6 September 2020
After watching Secret Garden and Empress Ki from Ha Ji Won, she cannot save this one. Bad acting aside from Ha Ji. No chemistry for the the leading actor. HaJo probably took most of the budget that led to the terrible villain - worst villain ever. You'll know. You need to wash your eyes after watching him.

"cheesy" "over-dramatic" certainly not the best
sharkboy-dhaka15 August 2014
This drama fails to walk the fine line between cute and cheesy. it was difficult to endure through all the episodes. it specially hurts me to say because i am a die hard fan of Ha Ji Won.

main story line was not bad. in fact it has more powerful story than most kdramas. but it was poorly made.the main plot was based on north-south political relations and most characters were trained military professionals. but it never felt like a true military story.story lost pace many times.

the foreign actors were just awful. john mayer was annoying for the most part. Ha Ji Won was beautiful as usual but i expected better action scenes from her.
