Since this is the first real episode we get introduced to a lot and it is obvious that both Catherine and Vincent are struggling to find a mutual ground on which to grow their connection. So Vincent gets involved in Catherine's case of the dead ballerina and begins to open up about his past but Catherine is blinded by her 10 year old quest for her mother's killer and a need to "make a case" out of anybody who comes close in her life. She is constantly drawn to Vincent and him to her, but it is complicated and they both have friends who draw them in the opposite direction. Vincent because his friend, JT, is worried that Catherine is endangering them by exposure to the people hunting Vincent and Catherine is trying to pretend to still have a normal life to her friend and partner, Tess.
The struggle is very real and well acted. It is always a risk opening up to someone and letting them in your heart and life but even more so when both have so much to hide and lose.
A thing I like about this and the other early episodes of the show is that Catherine (and sometimes Vincent too) seem to solve cases that gives them a clue to their own connection/budding relationship. It could be corny in any other setting but it works really well on Beauty and the beast.
Again, a well executed episode where everything from design to set to music works well together with a comfortable cast.
