The Breach, not to be confused with Breach, is the second feature from Rue Morgue founding editor Rodrigo Gudiño (The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh). Co-written by Nick Cutter and Ian Weir based on Cutter’s novel, its mix of haunted house and mad scientist themes attracted a lot of pre-release buzz which I was hoping it would live up to.
John Hawkins has one week left as sheriff of Lone Crow. Then he can put the town, and his ex Meg, behind him and start a new job in the city. That, of course, means something terrible has to happen before he can leave. And it does when a canoe bearing the mutilated remains of theoretical physicist Cole Parsons washes up at a local park.

Rodrigo Gudiño welcomes viewers into "The Breach," a mix between Lovecraft and Cronenbergian squishiness (think "The Fly") produced and co-scored by Guns' N Roses shred master, the horror-lovin' Slash. Ian Weir's screenplay adapts Nick Cutter's novel of the same name, and Gudiño — Rue Morgue's founder turned filmmaker — returns to feature-length thrills after 2012's festival darling "The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh." It's a hodgepodge assortment of influences and collaborators that comes together as science fiction with body horror accents, hinged on a third act loaded with gnarly practical effects. Slow-burn sensibilities are in full force as mysteries down...

The already stellar cast of the upcoming film Save Yourself has added another great talent. One of my favorite indie actresses Tristan Risk has joined the project. Check out the full details below.
From The Press Release:
Director Ryan M. Andrews is excited to attach American Mary star Tristan Risk to a powerhouse ensemble cast of Canadian talent in Save Yourself, shooting this summer. Risk joins the previously announced cast of Jessica Cameron (Truth Or Dare), Ry Barrett (The Demolisher), Tianna Nori (Clean Break) and Sydney Kondruss (The Drownsman).
Regarding Risk, Andrews says; “The Soska’s film American Mary was arguably the biggest indie film of last year and Tristan Risk’s character ‘Beatrice’ was a stand out performance. The character was so unique and interesting. Risk played it perfectly, and to have a talent like her bringing her edge and attitude to Save Yourself is truly exciting.

The UK's BBC Two has a new TV movie airing on Monday, 30 December, titled The Thirteenth Tale; and we have a look at two clips from it right here. Hopefully it'll be heading Stateside via BBC America shortly!
The Thirteenth Tale, starring Vanessa Redgrave (Julia, Howard's End, The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh) and Olivia Colman ("Broadchurch"), is a psychological drama adapted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton (Atonement, Dangerous Liaisons) from Diane Setterfield's bestselling novel.
It's directed by James Kent ("The White Queen") and co-stars Alexandra Roach, Robert Pugh, Steven Mackintosh, and Tom Goodman Hill.
Synopsis:
Biographer Margaret Lea (Colman) is summoned to the Yorkshire home of dying novelist Vida Winter (Redgrave), who has handpicked Margaret to write her biography. Though initially hesitant, as Vida has a reputation for distorting facts in interviews, Margaret becomes fascinated by her previously untold story.

Any regular readers of Sound On Sight, or listeners of our Sordid Cinema podcast, should know that I am a huge fan of horror films. I recently published a 75 000 + word article counting down the 100 greatest horror films ever made – and every year, I whip a list of the best horror films released. This year, the terror is accompanied by demonic possession, cannibalistic rituals, low-budget zom-coms, Tarantino’s favourite film, and the dark side of Disney.
Note: I’ve included three special mentions – all of which could be labeled horror, but I felt work best as thrillers instead. Enjoy!
****
Special Mention: Stoker
Directed by Chan-wook Park
Written by Wentworth Miller
USA, 2013
Chan-wook Park’s Stoker is a Gothic fairy tale, a family drama, and a beautifully twisted, pitch-black coming-of-age story, all at once. This slow-burning psychological thriller isn’t afraid to cross into uncomfortable places, often edging close to taboo territory.

From Blood and Donuts and Ginger Snaps to Splice and, his latest, Haunter, producer Steve Hoban has been a staple in the Canadian horror scene since the mid Nineties.
He’s now working again with director Vincenzo Natali on a new experimental web series called Darknet that should be making its way onto television here in the States in the near future. For now, as of 12:01am this morning, fans can watch the first installment over at Darknetfiles.com. And, believe me, it’s worth checking out. Consisting of interweaving storylines and connected characters in different instances of urban horror, the first episode runs about 25 minutes and features some really solid, well-crafted moments. Just before the debut, Hoban was kind of enough to speak with us for a few minutes to talk about the series.

Described as being made up of "snippets of people's lives being interrupted by vivid instances of unexpected violence or shocking strangeness," "Darknet" recalls browsing on a web site full of strange, sinister material, the episode below consisting of interwoven short horror stories. It also brings to mind "V/H/S" in its bringing in of different directors, in this case Natali's "Splice" producer Steve Hoban (making his directorial debut in the second episode), Brett Sullivan ("Orphan Black"), Rodrigo Gudiño ("The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh") and newcomers Anthony Scott Burns and Jeremy Ball. Natali, Pascal Trottier, Doug Taylor ("Splice"), James Kee, Randall Cole ("388 Arletta Ave") and Sarah Larsen are the writers. The first season of "Darknet" will begin airing on.

Dead By Dawn | Secret Cinema | Sundance London | I'm So Excited
Dead By Dawn, Edinburgh
The horror festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with a smorgasbord of fresh meat, rancid offal and high-speed pass the parcel (no, really). Veteran gore-merchant Frank Henenlotter presents two of his disgusting classics, Basket Case and Brain Damage, and there's a spread of dependable favourites like Evil Dead II, Hellraiser, The Brood and An American Werewolf In London. Among the newer stuff, a comet unleashes alien/zombie havoc in Paris in Dead Shadows; pottery and backwoods superstition collide in Jug Face; and Vanessa Redgrave features in The Last Will And Testament Of Rosalind Leigh as a voice from beyond the grave.
Filmhouse, Thu to 28 Apr
Secret Cinema, London

Yes, they could have definitely come up with a better title. When I first heard that Rodrigo Gudiño’s new horror movie was called “The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh”, I thought it was some drama on the Lifetime Channel. Turns out, it’s as creepy horror movie that’s getting major buzz, especially from guys like Clive Barker. Knowing nothing at all about the movie coming in, this was quite a creepy little teaser. The Last Will And Testament Of Rosalind Leigh tells the story of Leon (Poole), an antiques collector who inherits a house from his estranged mother Rosalind (Redgrave) only to discover that she had been living in...
