Enlightened "The Key" Sets Things Up for Season 2
talksallabout-426-53634519 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The season 2 of Enlightened premiered on Sunday January 13 on HBO. It's officially named #11, "The Key."

Amy Jellicoe (played by Laura Dern) is on a mission. She's always on a mission of one sort of another. It is how she defines herself and gives her life meaning.

Amy is tired of feeling small. She needs to do something to feel alive. She doesn't want to go back to being nothing. Tyler on the other hand is something of a nebbish. He doesn't have much ambition, he doesn't want much from life; he's just a quiet guy who lives a quiet lonely life. Maybe that is why Amy has so much power to manipulate him—she may be his only friend.

A lot of time in this episode is spent on voice-over philosophy-ing. There are lots of shots of skyscrapers glittering in the night and talk of "dreams and kingdoms and how this will end and life and earth will reign again." (The writers have apparently fell into a bushel of metaphors.) And the final shot—the "guess-what- the-metaphor-means" moment of the week-- is a sea turtle swimming alone in the ocean.

Oh my little seas turtles—each of us swims alone in the sea of life.

Bullseye!

In its own strange quirky way this season's opening episode hit the perfect chord. Timely, touching, relevant and so spot on. I typically am not a fan of voice overs, but in this instance Laura Dern's was haunting and perfect. And, IMO, yes we need more media entertainment discussing, exploring these hugely important issues in our society so that they become more a part of our cultural consciousness.

Last year when this series started I didn't think I'd make it past the second or third episode but it kept growing on me like an acquired taste. Sort of like the Wire did. I'm sooo glad I stayed with it. It's rapidly becoming one of my favorite shows on the small screen. Just wish it was an hour instead of a half hour.

Enlightened The Key

Warning: Spoilers
The season starts with another voice-over from Amy talking about her destiny. Amy wakes up riping out a newspaper article. She asks her mom about fate and what fate can be. Amy goes into work worried about what she has saw. Amy tells Tyler some of the e-mails she saw and that they must release them for people to see. Tyler does not want to release these files but she talks him into going along with her. Amy tells Tyler of their jobs going from what she red in the e-mail. Amy then calls the LA times with news an explosive story that she has from her company. Amy then gets a call about meeting her to get the files off her. After Dougie leaves Tyler and Amy stay behind and start to print some e-mails only to stop when the power goes off. Amy meets with Jeff Flender (Dermot Mulroney) at a TGI's and is so happy to be handing him the files to maybe change something with the action she takes. The next day still with no response Amy believing in her mission rings wondering why she has gotten no answer yet. Amy gets a call from Jeff and she must go with Tyler to L.A. They go but only Amy meets with Jeff. He tells her there is really nothing special in the e-mails but gives her the task to another story she might get from her company. Amy then tells Tyler they must keep trying to fight back against the company but he does not want to lose his job for meddling. After being annoying to him finally Tyler agrees to help Amy. Last season I gave up on the show but returned because of buzz I heard of later episodes I never bothered to watch again. Dern's characters is very annoying but that was my problem with it. Mike White's character makes no sense to me but this show seems to be about this women who gets what she wants.

EPISODE GRADE: C- (MVP: Laura Dern)
