'Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated' "Heart of Evil" (2012)

Opening thoughts: Was very excited seeing that "Heart of Evil" was essentially a Scooby Doo and Blue Falcon and Dynomutt crossover. Have always rated those two characters highly and 'Mask of the Blue Falcon' (one of the better later Scooby Doo animations and one of the better crossover films in the franchise) proved that the characters and two different gangs work well. Despite having reservations about the character writing of one character, the episode was very enjoyable on first watch.

Over a decade on "Heart of Evil" is still a very enjoyable episode, though my reservations do still stand. It may not be one of the best episodes of the show and is not up to the same level of the outstanding and quite special previous episode "Wrath of the Krampus", but the good things are numerous and the best of the good things are great. It works very well on the whole as a crossover and was actually very nostalgic, as it would with anybody else that liked Blue Falcon and Dynomutt.

Good things: "Heart of Evil" has a lot that is good. Have no issues on the animation, which is particularly good on the villain and Dynomutt when he's menacing. Same with the music, which has lost none of its momentum or atmosphere, and the uniformly strong voice acting. The writing is well balanced and smart, with a lot provoking a lot of thought. Never does it feel muddled tonally and the gang are spot on.

The mystery is fun and well paced, often lively, with it not being obvious or convoluted. The ending was thrilling in terms of action and was not expecting the who, the why and how it all ends. The villain is well designed and suitably sinister. It is an episode that brought me back to the fond times watching Hanna Barbera cartoons on television (which the episode captures the spirit of very well indeed). The crossover aspect works very well and made me nostalgic. The menacing side to Dynomutt was very interesting, surprising and entertained.

Bad things: Less good, and the only issue with "Heart of Evil" (sadly though a rather big one), was the character writing for Blue Falcon. Who seemed too over the top angry constantly which was out of character when comparing this and the 70s series.

Closing thoughts: Very good episode on the whole.

8/10.

Jingle Bells, Batman Smells.....etc etc

This was quite the episode. I think Blue Falcon is a classic Scooby Doo character but I am unsure, he's definately a Batman parody. Not sure I was the world's biggest fan of this episode, but I appreciate the effort in doing something different.
